Social Media, Or, Parents Running Defense

h, our addictions. And you know what I mean. Sometimes we just can’t help ourselves. You settle down into your couch after a long day of work and are ready, eager, to scroll through your social media feeds. Suddenly an hour or two breezes by. What is this, a black hole? Um, yes. Every swipe, click, nudge, wink and share carries a responsibility with it when you’re scrolling. If you’re closing your eyes to press “send,” what are you really doing? Provoking an argument? Taking a stand? Proving your worth? And what about your kids? Are they closing their eyes and hitting “share”? And are lots of afternoons and weekends continuing on in this way? If that answer is yes, then maybe it’s time to ask ourselves, is this the way life should be experienced? Is this what I want my kids to know about life? Articles abound about anonymous bullying and more happening on social media. These scary stories pull back the curtain on social media’s downside, but they don’t stop anyone from logging on. Politicians may try to bring legislation to curb social media for kids, but lobbyists continue to shut that effort down. Platforms keep you scrolling, liking and sharing willy nilly — and they know they’re designed to keep you doing it. It’s an unfair advantage. For most teens and plenty of kids under age 13 (even though platforms say you have to be 13 to have an account, kids figure out a way), their main way of communicating is through Snapchat, TiKTok, Instagram and more. It’s exhausting for concerned — although possibly even clueless — parents. At least now we’re hearing about celebrities who social media for kids, too. Matthew McConaughey and his wife have three kids, the oldest age 15. They are only now beginning to monitor social media with him ... sitting with him ... talking him through. At least that’s what they claim. Jennifer Garner (who says she banned her three kids from social media altogether) told Today.com: “I just said to my kids, ‘Show me the articles that prove that social media is good for teenagers, and then we’ll have the conversation; find the scientific evidence and we’ll chat!’” So it’s touch and go for us all. Ban phones altogether and your kids become isolated. Ban social media until their 16 or older and they may freak out when they are finally allowed to have it. What to do? Clearly, it’s each household to its own. One good kid at a time. My son’s little girl (yes, I have a first grandchild!) is barely 11 months old, but she’s drawn to our phones like a magnate. Will her parents be able to keep devices from her? I know they want to as long as possible. But nothing and I mean nothing mesmerizes her more than a cell phone. If I was raising a toddler today, I’d wait until she was in eighth grade to give her a phone ... I think. And then slowly, ever so slowly, we would proceed ... together. Eventually I’d write down all of her passwords. And I’d monitor like crazy because inside that phone is the wild, wild west and a lot of unchartered territory. And nobody needs to be in that wide open, untamed region of life without defense. The only defense would be me.

A Conversation with Lancaster Christian What has helped Lancaster grow over the course of 25 years?

We are a small community of Christian educators who believe in the relational approach to education. Our primary ingredient in the recipe for success is relationship. What is LCA’s outlook for the next 25 years?

We are not looking to build a massive empire. Our growth strategy is founded on meaningful learning and spiritual development. How has LCA evolved and advanced in the last 25 years?

Lancaster Christian Academy began in a small white house on Maple Drive in Smyrna having only a vision for 10 kids. The Lord saw fit for expansion and growth in ways we would’ve never imagined. We currently represent 750 families across three campuses from babies through 12th grade. We offer a dynamic arts program, championship winning sports program, excellent academic program, and leadership development.

Have there been any changes since Keith and Sherry Lancaster passed the school over to Kevin and Shari O’dea?

Keith and Sherry Lancaster retired in 2013 and turned the helm of operations over to Kevin and Shari O’dea. Keith and Sherry founded the school and secured the property and building that is currently on 150 Soccer Way including the building of a multiuse gymnasium/auditorium. Mr. O’dea came on board in 2004 as a Principal organizing and administrating the school to achieve a full accreditation status in the state of Tennessee. Over the last decade, Mr. and Mrs. O’dea have created multiple discipleship programs, streamlined administrative processes, created model classroom strategies that are observed from other private schools across the state, and have developed the best faculty and staff in Tennessee. Mr. O’dea was invited to be on the board of directors of the Tennessee Association of Nonpublic Schools in 2016 and travels the state evaluating nearly 100 private schools each year. Lancaster Christian Academy has become a flagship school for the association and is often called upon for organizational ideas, classroom strategies, and training implementation. The campus of Lancaster Christian Academy has expanded into three locations under Mr. O’dea’s leadership. We have opened a campus in Murfreesboro representing nearly 230 students. Currently, Mr. O’dea chairs a leadership board comprised of 15 well educated individuals who manage the day-to-day operations and affairs of the school and the early learning centers. He is also actively developing discipleship programs for parents who are raising teens in a culture that does not support biblical principles and standards of living. Mr. O’dea is the Lead Pastor of Springhouse Church in Smyrna and enjoys his free time with his wife and four beautiful girls- all who attend LCA.
