aby crazy. That’s what they called me. And when I finally had one of my own, I couldn’t believe how pure and perfect she was, and I couldn’t wait to watch her grow, to see her crawl, to see her walk! Every coming change was exciting and did not disappoint. She loved playing and dancing and being read to and chatting and learning. Then suddenly she was a kindergartener. We were so excited to be going to “big”school! We were having happy days until I received a call from her teacher. There was a “concern,” she said; could we come in for a meeting? I wish we had never gone. I wish I’d never had a “concern” invade my mind or a glint enter my eye that something wasn’t “right.” They were concerned about her comprehension; weren’t sure she could express what she understood or even if she did understand. I fought stinging tears and a growing throat lump as my husband held my hand. We nodded and agreed to testing our child to try and identify what was “wrong.” But testing sort of took the wind out of my girl’s sails, and not just that, I started picking up a sullen child in the afternoons. We learned she had a mild auditory processing difference, so accommodations were put in place in the classroom. Now she was different. Now she wasn’t one of them. Now she’d been “called out,” and she was being treated differently. By the time she was 9, she was struggling with being “tagged.” If you have a learning difference, no matter how subtle, you are special needs. There should be no shame in it, but there is, and it hurt our hearts for her. We wanted to find a way for our truly exhuberant child to be her true self again and to not be dogged by what had happened. We decided to send her to summer camp. We did due diligence and found Riverview Camp for Girls in Alabama. We fell in love with the camp director and what we learned about the nurturing and fun activities in place for them. Long story short, our girl started with one week away and came home elated and full of talk about new friends and experiences. She went for two weeks the next summer, three the next, and she kept on going until she was 16. Suffice to say that several of her summer camp girlfriends remain lifelong friends who were bridesmaids in her wedding last summer. It’s no understatement to say that my daughter’s life was dramatically changed for the good at summer camp. It was hard to let her go that first summer, but my husband urged me to let her try it because she wanted to. She found a new set of wings at camp, and we did, too. Wings of gratitude and relief. More important than the blip of academics in life, more important than teachers and tutors and learning differences are the joyful relationships we forge with friends. And of course, to see your child happy is the greatest gift in the world.

xcited about enrolling your child in a sport? Don’t fret … you are not alone! But where do you begin? Before enrolling your child, there are some things to look for ... and realize that there’s no “best” first sport; there are plenty of sports all kids can enjoy. You’ve heard how Tiger Woods learned golf from his dad at the age of 3, and you’ve seen Serena Williams’ 3-year-old daughter learning tennis. But where should your child start? For many parents, the first sport they’ll sign a child up for will be T-Ball or soccer. But many kids start with basketball or the sport most favored by the parent. No matter what you choose, put playful learning at the middle of the experience and you’re sure to have a great time.
Your child’s first sport Many children are introduced to a variety of sports before even learning to read, and while many preschoolers are ready for organized team sports, getting your child started should be about enjoyment. If your 3- or 4-year-old wants to try T-Ball, scope out a team to watch together and see if it resonates. Or take a look at soccer — it’s an easy first sport because it’s a big ball and easy to start with for kids just developing coordination. First team sports should teach your child about listening, waiting, turn taking, following directions, being physically active, and most importantly, it should encourage your child to have fun! Giving your child the opportunity to dabble in a few youth sports will help him decide if he likes one over another. For all kids starting sports, the American Academy of Pediatrics rec-

ommends that kids play multiple sports and delay specializing until age 15 to avoid injuries and burn out. Starting out, as you work on deciding what sport to begin with, observe your child and steer him accordingly, says Jordan Metzl, M.D., author of The Young Athlete: A Sports Doctor’s Complete Guide for Parents.
Considerations • Is your child old enough to make a commitment to an entire season? • Has your child shown an interest in a sport? • Does your child enjoy physical activity? • Does your child enjoy playing with others and can he be separated from you? • Is your child able to take turns?
Which sport? • If your child gets along with others and loves to run, try soccer. • If your child loves to tumble, has good balance and has upper body strength, try gymnastics. • If your child loves to throw and catch, try T-Ball. • If your child loves being in the water, try swimming. • If your child loves to bounce a ball and can toss with good aim, try basketball. • If your child loves the cold and sliding around, try ice hockey. • If your child is a roughhouser, try football.

Liar, Liar?
A recent poll shows that honesty tops the list of values parents want their kids to embody as adults, and yet all kids lie at one point or another. Here’s how to deal with the reasons why kids lie to help them give up the need to lie.

our child’s standing right in front of you with a ring of chocolate crumbs around his mouth. “No,” he assures you, he did not take a cookie from the cookie jar. You stand their blinking because it’s just so darn obvious. He’s 5. He is staring you straight in the face and boldly lying. Pause. Because what you do next matters. A lot. More than anything, you want to raise honest kids. Even more than raising kids who are hardworking, compassionate, or financially savvy, you want your child to have integrity. In a 2015 poll by Pew Research Center, honesty tops the list of values parents want their kids to embody as adults, outranking traits like compassion, ambition, and financial responsibility. But raising honest children isn’t as straightforward as it seems. In fact, teaching children about telling the truth can get morally murky, since parents often lie to their own kids — even parents who instruct their children to always be honest, according to a study published in the Journal of Moral Education. Ready to set the record straight? Here’s the truth about raising honest kids, age by age.
Why Kids Lie Almost all children will lie before the age of 7, but kids do not lie because they are morally corrupt. The top reasons why children lie are: • To get out of trouble • To make themselves look better • To make someone else feel good

Early Years (1 - 5)
Elementary Years (6 - 12)
No shame. While children may slip into an occasional untruth as soon as they can string together a sentence, these (usually unintentional) utterances aren’t really lies. Around age 3, children can begin to tell actual fibs, or intentional falsehoods, says Kate Paquin, a parenting educator and family coach. These early lies are usually innocent and experimental, she notes. A child may take three cookies, but say they only took two, or claim that they didn’t steal a sister’s favorite toy despite a sister’s shrieks.

“Parents can become very alarmed by these lies, if it seems like a child never lied before but suddenly he’s lying quite a bit,” says Paquin. But you should remember that toddlers tell small lies to test boundaries. It’s during the preschool years that children develop the cognitive ability to tell lies. This is when the concept that other people have thoughts separate from your own begins to develop. To tell a lie, children must gain the ability to hold back the truth and to make something up instead. But lying at this age is normal and to be expected, so how you react is important. If you respond angrily, or even with shock, you risk making your child fearful ... which may possibly lead to more lies, says Jane Nelson, author of the classic parenting book, Positive Discipline A-to-Z (Ballantine; 2006). To discourage dishonesty and reinforce positive habits, Nelson recommends acknowledging the lie simply and without shame: “I know you took three cookies and it’s OK if you want three instead of two, only next time please tell me the truth.”
Red handed. Catching a toddler with her hand in the cookie jar is one thing, but shouldn’t older kids know better? How should you react when you catch your school-age child in a lie? First, it’s helpful for you to share your values and expectations about honesty

so your kids have no questions about where you stand. Just say it: “In our family, we tell the truth.” When you learn that your child has lied, either to you, at school, or in another context, you should respond firmly, but without a lot of emotion or energy (that means no yelling), says child psychologist Kristen C. Wynns, Ph.D., author of The No Wimpy Parenting Handbook (Create Space Independent Publishing; 2017). “If parents give attention to the lying behavior by having a strong reaction, they may inadvertently reinforce that behavior,” Wynns notes. But does that mean letting young kids off the hook? Not necessarily. “Depending on the lie, parents may want to show grace, for example, ‘OK, next time we expect you to tell us the truth,’ or we will give a consequence,” Wynns says. If parents take the consequence route, enhance the teachable moment by matching the consequence to the “crime” in question. For instance, if a child lied about feeding the dog, have him do an extra dog-related chore for a few days, Wynns suggests.
Teen Years (13 - 18) Pretty little lies. Yes of course you want and need your teenager to be honest. But teaching honesty to teens can get tricky — especially when savvy teens catch parents telling fibs and “white lies.” What should you do when your teen calls you out for a small untruth, like telling a relative that you’re not available for dinner when you really just want to stay home? When an aware teen confronts you about an untruth, start by ‘fessing up, says Wynns. “Own the lie. ‘Yes, I lied to Aunt Martha and I shouldn’t have done that. Next time I’ll be honest with her,’” is a worthy reply. But don’t stop there — seize the opportunity to discuss the nuances of honesty and model the value of apologizing and asking for forgiveness, says Wynns. “If the lie was meant to spare someone’s feelings or to help navigate an awkward social situation, you can explain that being honest sometimes conflicts with the ‘bigger picture’ of maintaining a relationship, and how sometimes we must weigh the advantages and disadvantages of telling the (whole) truth.” By acknowledging the challenges of navigating the world with integrity — including your own slip-ups — you foster moral maturity in teens and help them to grow into trustworthy, honest adults.

Powerful Tools for Developing Honesty in Kids 1. When your children are very young,
talk with them about how much you value honesty in your family.
Tell your kids how important it is to the family that you can always count on each other to tell the truth — even when it’s difficult. If there’s not honesty between parents and children, there won’t be trust or closeness in your family either.
2. Model honesty for your children —
not only in your words, but also in your lifestyle. Your goal should be to create an open environment where there are no secrets and everyone feels comfortable being truthful. You can’t expect them to tell you the truth if you’re not honest with them — even when they ask you an awkward question. Be brief and be age appropriate in your response, but if you lie to your kids when it’s embarrassing to tell the truth, you can’t expect them to blurt out the truth when it’s tough for them.
3. Let your children know that you put
more emphasis on their honesty than on the punishment for their dishonest behavior. Yes, you can impose consequences for lying, but your kids need to know there’s a benefit to their being honest. If you glide right over their courage in pouring out the truth and jump to a punishment, they won’t be quick to fess up the next time. Kids have been cooped up for so long, they deserve wide open spaces for running free. The good news is, many residential camps will be open this year (with safety measures in place). It’s time to reserve your child’s spot. By Susan Day

espite COVID-19 — or maybe because of it — overnight camp directors are reporting that 2021 enrollment is up from previous years, and it’s no wonder. Never before have parents been so eager to give their kids a chance to run and play like kids rather than spend all day in front of computers and TVs. “We are planning for a more normal summer,” says Paul McEntire, chief operating officer of YMCA of the USA. “Normal,” because last summer 75% of the YMCA’s overnight camps didn’t open in person. At Camp Widjiwagan in Nashville, the 2021 enrollment for both day and overnight camps is up, according to Marketing Director Jayne Burnett, and the American Camp Association (ACA) reports that while only about 18% of accredited overnight camps in the U.S. were open last summer,
the majority of camps are planning to be open this year, albeit with COVID-19 guidelines in place which include: • Pre-arrival and post-arrival testing followed by another test four to 10 days later. • No parents allowed on campgrounds at drop-off or pick-up. • A reliance on outdoor activites allowing for physical distancing. For many kids whose parent watched them dea — and sometime struggle with — the shifting uncertainties wrought by the pandemic, heading to summer camps will bring some semblance of normalcy once again ... and relief. Many overnight camps open enrollment this month, and demand is expected to be high. (please turn the page)

Should You Let Your Kid Go To Sleep-Away Camp?
More great things about sleep-away camp: • No cell phone policies. Social skills get strengthened and they eat meals without a screen while actually talking to one another.

o, your kid doesn’t want to go to sleep-away camp. He’s absolutely DYING to go to sleep-away camp! He’s heard about it fro other kids who have told him how awesome their summer was and he’s envied their reports. The truth is, the pandemic has closed your child off more than any other time in his life and he will be thrilled to have an adventure away from home. Child psychologist Michael Thompson, author of Homesick and Happy: How Time Away from Parents Can Help a Child Grow (Random House; 2012) knows a thing or two about the subject of kids spreading their wings away from home. “Deep down,” he writes, “all children want to have their own adventures with no apparent safety net.” Thompson uncovers the secrets behind why resident camp is so special for kids. Not only is it being away from parents, it’s also getting to develop relationships on their own and experiencing a private world without their parents inserting themselves every step of the way. Thompson describes eight things that parents cannot do for their children — think about your own kids as you read them:
• Camps provide downtime so kids can get their summer reading done or write a letter home on the stamped postcards you provide, only don’t hold your breath. They are probably really chatting away in their bunks or playing cards or some game somebody pulled out of their trunk. • Kids learn to think for themselves. They will run and play and get messy and eat what they want all in a safe environment where the camp knows your child’s needs. • Your kid is going to grow up a little. When you go an pick him up after a week or two or three, he’ll have moved from a size 10 to a size 12. He’ll also look a little different in the face. You know that thing that happens when you don’t see someone for awhile? It happens now. • For you: As soon as your child’s tucked away at camp you will miss him instantly. This is good. You gain perspective. You go through your days feeling love and missing in your heart, thinking of him, adoring him. Then you go out on a date with your spouse and you think, “How wonderful summer camp is!” Susan Day is editor of this publication, a former residential camp counselor and the mom of four kids who all loved attending camps.
1. We cannot make our children happy. 2. We cannot give our children high self-esteem. 3. We cannot make friends for our children or micromanage their friendships. 4. We cannot successfully double as our child’s agent, manager or coach. 5. We cannot create the “second family” for which our child yearns in order to facilitate his own growth. 6. It is increasingly apparent that we cannot compete with or limit our children’s total immersion in the on line, digital and social media realms. 7. We cannot keep our children perfectly safe, but we can drive them crazy trying. 8. We cannot make our children independent.
Consider these ideas as you think about whether or not you should spring for sleep-away camp for your child, and know that some camps offer scholarships. Camps let kids experiment without a parent breathing down the neck. Imagine the freedom kids feel when they get off the bus or when Mom and Dad drive away. They get to instantly begin making decisions for themselves. They get to take more risks, make judgement calls on their own and experiment with what works and what doesn’t. They go through a period of thinking, “Oh, I have to ask Mom,” and then, “Wait! I don’t have to ask Mom, I just have to mind my counselor!” It’s incredibly freeing. The skills that kids learn at summer camp without hovering parents helps them to build character, Thompson says. Camp helps them build resiliency and pushes them out of their comfort zones. Kids learn about taking jumps and celebrating with others outside of their home safety net.

e Middle Tennesseans sometimes forget that one of nature’s most amazing landscapes is just a few hours drive east — the Great Smoky Mountains. Growing up, my family would take us kids at least once a year to either the National Park, Dollywood, Ripley’s Aquarium or Ober Ski Resort and we’d stay in a rental cabin — there’s just something about getting cozy and drinking cocoa by the fire that really resonated with my folks. Nowadays, you can save yourself travel stress by booking places that give you and the kids every reason to never leave, like the Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort & Water Park. With access to hiking trails, three heated outdoor pools, a full-service spa and a 60,000-square-foot indoor/ outdoor waterpark, this place really makes it easy to skip the downtown strip — especially during a pandemic. Want to go zip-lining? Check. Mini golf? Check. Need a grocery store and multiple dining options on-site? Check and check. As a parent, I don’t have to tell you how nice it is to not

have to drive around looking for a parking spot while you’re on vacation. Someone is always getting upset. Sleep deprivation is pretty normal. There is an astonishing amount of noise. Proper deployment of time-outs is critical. When emotions run high, things get messy. Someone is always trying to steal someone else’s ball. You’ll end up seeing a Cinderella story or two (or maybe a Toy Story). Grown men are often reduced to tears by the actions of children.
