• THE 2023 CITIZENS FIRE ACADEMY is a free six-week program that provides adults 18 and older with the opportunity to learn about what it takes to be in fire service. Under the close supervision of Columbia Fire & Rescue firefighters, participants will don firefighter turnout gear, deploy hoses, place ladders and perform search-andrescue operations. In addition, participants will learn how to use a fire extinguisher, perform CPR and more. The Academy makes for a great way to learn more about dayto-day operations of your local fire department. • 2023 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
The Discovery Center at Murfree Spring in Murfreesboro recently named Choctaw artist Sally Wells as the museum’s 2023 Artist in Residence, which runs select Sundays from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. through April. Wells — known in Tennessee and the Chocktaw community for her traditional beadwork and dressmaking — has dedicated her life and art to promoting and preserving Choctaw culture. Using seed and bugle beads, Wells creates intricate Chocktaw collar necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and hanging necklaces. She is also a founding member of the Native American Indian Association.
