Trusted by Decker and Locklen’s parents.
Kerra and Josh were busy parents of three boys with a baby girl on the way when their middle child, four-year-old Decker, complained of a tummy ache. His symptoms seemed to get worse, so they took him to a walk-in clinic where they were immediately sent to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. There, our nephrology team, who are experts in treating kidney conditions, confirmed what the walk-in doctor had suspected: Decker had somehow contracted an infection caused by the bacteria E. coli. That infection had developed into Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, or HUS, a dangerous condition that affects kidney function and the blood’s ability to clot.
Decker had been in the ICU battling HUS for over a week when little brother Locklen, then two, began showing
symptoms of the same illness. Doctors at Monroe Carell found that, like his big brother, he had HUS resulting from an infection caused by the bacteria E. coli.
Both boys were in the hospital for weeks where they underwent dialysis and multiple surgeries. But thanks to the compassionate care provided by Monroe Carell’s multidisciplinary team of experts, first-grader Decker and kindergartener Locklen made remarkable recoveries and today lead full, active lives.
Our story is best told through theirs. Learn more about other inspiring children like Decker and Locklen.

DAD BEAT
by Michael W. Aldrich
The Minutes That Matter Most
Most people wake up to an alarm clock each morning. My alarm clock is my 4-year-old. It’s 6 a.m. and mostly dark outside, with just enough daylight piercing through the bedroom curtains to alert him that it’s time to rock ’n’ roll.
In a zombie-like state, I “ninja” my way down the hall to his room, trying to avoid the creaky floorboards so my wife and 4-month-old daughter can keep sleeping. As soon as I peek in, my son is ready to bring all of his “friends” (something like 30 stuffed animals on his bed, no joke) downstairs to the den couch, along with a pair of kitchen tongs (he’s currently obsessed with “claw games” and likes to recreate them with his furry friends).
With one eye open, I dump what feels like a small zoo on the couch and B-line it up to the kitchen to prep breakfast. As the juice is poured, the banana is sliced and the oatmeal is microwaved, I hear on repeat, “Daddy downstairs?! Daddy downstairs?!” I bring breakfast down and pray it’ll keep him busy long enough for me to relieve my extremely full bladder in peace. “Daddy go pee?!” I hear from behind me. “Yes, buddy.” Back in the den, I see a few nibbles taken from his breakfast in one eye and him running to put on his shoes in the other eye. “Daddy outside?!”
“Daddy play dirt?!” It’s 6:10 a.m. We’re both outside now — one of us playing gleefully with shovels and dirt and the other sitting like a sack of potatoes sipping on coffee and scrolling on social media.
Then I stumble upon a thought-provoking post from a beloved school superintendent in Wilson County who recently retired. Here’s what it said:
“There are 9 minutes during the day that have the greatest impact on a child:
• the first 3 minutes after they wake up
• the 3 minutes after they get home from school
• the last 3 minutes of the day before they go to bed.
Make those minutes special and help your children feel loved and accepted.”
I read it once and then read it again, reflecting on how my own parenting measures up during those nine minutes. I wonder, “are these the nine minutes each day where my parenting is literally at its worst?” It’s not just mornings. There are plenty of afternoons when my son gets home from pre-school and I’m scurrying to meet a deadline instead of pausing to ask how school went. And there are plenty of evenings when — exhausted — I speed through the pages of Goodnight Moon instead of embracing the moment and giving our nighttime routine some extra love.
Parenting is hard — partly, I think, because it’s 24/7. And partly because it’s a lifetime thing, which can seem overwhelming at times. But when you break it down to putting some extra focus and effort on just nine minutes out of the day, it feels a bit more manageable — and sustainable. It also helps set the tone for the other 1,431 minutes in the day.
So, aim to make those nine minutes special. Don’t busy yourself with other things. Listen to them. Hug them. Brush your daughter’s hair. Pat your son on the back. Make meaningful eye contact. After all, it’s just nine minutes — and they very well could be the minutes that matter the most for you and your child.

QUESTION:
How do I teach my bubbly, people-loving preschooler about his personal safety without talking about “stranger danger” and scaring him to death?
Personal Safety Lessons With Littles
PARENTS PROVIDE GREAT IDEAS
“When mine were little, I always told them that their space is their space. They don’t have to hug kiss or touch anyone they don’t want to and that goes for family and friends. Then we had the ‘safe place’ talks and the never keeping a secret from us talk. Then, when my girls got older, I took them to a course offered for sex trafficking. It’s so much, so very much we have to guide them through.”
Kristal Ladd
“Unfortunately, predators often look like good people and are beloved in their communities. I started with rules around keeping secrets ... it’s OK to help with a fun surprise, but there’s no situation in which a child should be asked to keep a secret from a parent.”
Katie Mike
“As soon as my kids were old enough to comprehend what I was saying, I always said secrets are bad. I went over with them their private parts, naming each, and that no one should touch them or anywhere their swimsuit covers and to tell me if anyone even tried. I even told them exactly what could happen if they wondered off in a store and how they could end up with a stranger in any of the cars being driven out of a parking lot. [I told them] if they were taken, to scream and to fight back with all their might. I didn’t, and still don’t, hide the truth from them at all, because the world can be, and often is, a truly scary place. First and foremost, I trust my gut instincts 100 percent of the time because you can never truly know someone.”
Becky Hopkins Fred
“When my boys were young, we taught them about “tricky people” rather than strangers. Tricky people can be people you know or strangers. Tricky people might give you a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. Tricky people might ask you to do something you know is wrong. Tricky people might ask you to keep a secret from your parents or get you to go somewhere alone with them. Tricky people might ask a child for help (but why does an adult need a child’s help?). There’s also a book, Protecting the Gift. It’s an older book, so it doesn’t address some things, like smart phone safety, but it is common sense, clear-eyed, helpful. It is tailor-made to instill in you the confidence to see danger signs and talk to your kids about them.”

Just Play, Already!
“Iknow I should play with my child, but I usually last about five minutes before I start thinking about all of the other more important things I need to do,” one mom says.
“And then I just have to get up.” She doesn’t want anyone to know her name. But she’s like a lot of parents today: overwhelmed by to-do lists, work and, well, more satisfying preferences. “I start feeling guilty about it, but what’s the point of playing if I’m just dialing it in?”
This mom isn’t alone. Many parents with toddlers know they are their child’s first teacher but still dread the constant need of their little ones for attention and interaction. The importance of developmental play for babies and young children is non-stop, but so is the need for parents to satisfy themselves. How can a parent who doesn’t like to play with their child become one who does?
WHY SO SERIOUS?
You’re sweeping the kitchen floor and the laundry is spinning in the dryer. You have plenty of errands you’d like to knock out today, but your 4-year-old runs in.
“Mommy, can you play with me?”
Her face is hopeful and excited.
“Honey, just a minute, when I’m done I can play.” She runs from the room and returns fast with a favorite toy.
“Now can you play, Mommy?”
Mommy’s shoulders drop and she lets out a sigh.
“I just have to get the clothes from the dryer, sweetie.” Mommy’s tone is a bit impatient.
The 4-year-old begins to spin about, waiting but watching.
“Now, Mommy?”
“Honey, just —”
“You never play with me!” the little one whines, defeated.
nashvilleparent.com 18 september 2023 FEATURE
Many parents admit that playing with a toddler isn’t something they enjoy. Yet science says adults need play more than ever to ward off stress. Here’s how to make play fun for both of you.
And of course, that’s never what you want. But how do you get around the nonstop needs of your home, work and all that life entails to squeeze in time for all-important play with your child without dreading it?
WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS ABOUT ADULTS
Recognizing that play is actually good for YOU — not only for your child, but healthy and stress reducing for YOU — may help you find a reason to get down on the floor with your Little. If you dread doing it for your child, do it for you.
Plenty of adults spend a lot of money trying to find ways to eliminate the stress in their lives by working out at the gym, seeing a therapist, drinking wine, smoking pot or whatever. Playing costs nothing and is fundamental to your well being and your child’s.
Play activates the reward centers of the brain, floods the rest of the brain with feel-good chemicals like oxytocin and triggers the release of neurons that promote learning and mental flexibility, say authors Julie Jones, PH.D. and Jed Dearybury in their book, The Playful Life: The Power of Play in Our Every Day (Jossey-Bass; 2022). The two also have a popular podcast, “We Are Playful,” where they chat about playful living and how to be more intentional about play. It causes stress hormones to drop, mood to lift and has an energizing effect, they attest.
Researchers say playfulness in adults is linked to certain desirable characteristics like making people laugh, the ability to ease tension and increased creativity. Somewhere between childhood and adulthood many parents stop playing, exchanging the joys of spontaneity, goofiness and a simple playful lifestyle for more serious “adult” endeavors that require planning, organization and importance. But literally, play helps to reduce your stress, improve your brain function, improve relationships with others and keep you young. Play helps you to improve your social life, teaches new ways to get along with others and it can heal wounds, too. So while it’s all well and good to admit that you may not like playing with your child — and hearing that others feel the same — you don’t want to stew in feelings of unhelpful guilt or depression because of it. You need to find a way.
HOW TO PLAY WITH YOUR CHILD
While your kids are little — while they need your attention and before you can begin arranging play dates for them — build allimportant playtime into your daily life without resentment, Jones and Dearybury advise. Now that you know how important playfulness is for you, you can:
• Schedule play time: Take 20 minutes a day to get down on your child’s level and just play (whether you’re leading or your child is).
• Give undivided attention: Turn off your cell phone and play with out distraction. It’s OK to turn on some music you love.
• Be on your child’s level: Sit on the floor and match your child’s intensity. If they’re loud, be loud. If they’re banging dinosaurs together, bang away.
• Repeat: Children learn from repetition. It may drive you nuts, but realize it’s how your child learns.
• Go for laughs: Laughter really is great medicine.

Kids Helping Kids: Why It’s Good for Kids to Be Mentors ... or to Be Mentored
by Tanni Haas, Ph. D.
If your kid is mature and academically independent, they can be a mentor. If your kid needs academic help in middle or high school, a peer mentor may be the answer they need.
Most people know that having a mentor is really helpful for the person being mentored — the mentee. But mentoring is also good for the person who’s doing the mentoring — the mentor. Research shows that kids who help other kids improve their own leadership, organizational and time management skills become more self-confident and patient with others, and feel a strong sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.
If being a mentor is such a great thing, where can your kids go to do it?
NATIONAL MENTORING ORGANIZATIONS
One possibility is to volunteer with the local chapter of well-known
national mentoring organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee (mentorakid.org) or the National Mentoring Partnership (mentoing.org). These organizations have formal programs that provide extensive training to anyone who wishes to be a mentor. However, their preference is for young adults aged 18 or older to serve as mentors.
LOCAL SCHOOLS
Middle and high school kids can join a peer mentoring program at their local school. Most middle and high schools have mentoring programs that pair up kids from different grades (typically seniors with freshmen) during the school day or at their after-school programs.
While national mentoring organizations tend to focus on developing the mentees’ general life skills, like how to focus on the positive in their

lives and make good life choices, a school-based program typically focuses on enhancing their academic skills, such as how to take better notes in class, how to organize their homework and how to prepare for exams.
My son’s middle school has such a peer mentoring program in its after-school program, while his high school matches up older and younger students once a week during the regular school day. If your kids are really strong academically, mentoring in a school-based mentoring program may be just right for them.
LOCAL COMMUNITY INSTITUTIONS
Another option is to find a mentoring program at your local community center or library that offers mentoring programs aimed at helping kids learn to read, write and do basic math. If no formal programs exist, some places let kids start up their own informal programs. Our local community center has had many informal programs run by groups of local high school students over the years. So, if your kids aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and create a mentoring program together with one or more of their friends, this could be a great experience for them.
PRIVATE MENTORING
Finally, if your kids are very mature and independent-minded, nothing should stop them from creating and offering their own private mentoring program. If you know of neighborhood kids who could benefit from having positive role-models in their lives, encourage your kids to meet up with them on a regular basis to serve as their mentors. Mentoring is not only the right thing to do if you have what it takes, it can also help your kids in both the short and long term. Many middle and high schools have a community service component that requires them to volunteer for a certain amount of hours in order to graduate. Participating in an authorized mentoring program often satisfies that requirement; it does at my son’s high school. Your kids can also use any letters of recommendation that they receive about their mentoring activities as part of their college application.
Virtually all colleges and universities across the country consider giving back to the community — especially helping other kids achieve their academic potential — a worthwhile goal, and service through mentoring could be an asset during the admissions process.

KIDS AGES 0-8

SUCCESS STRATEGIES FOR STRUGGLING STUDENTS
FIFTEEN TO 20 PERCENT OF THE POPULATION HAS A LEARNING ISSUE, SO THERE’S NO SHAME IN IT. BUT THERE ARE WAYS TO HELP.
Schoolis your child’s work, but like most jobs, there are good days and bad, great bosses (teachers) and not so great ones, classes that are hard and ones that are easy. For some of even the brightest kids, however — like my youngest daughter — every test can seem difficult, every teacher hard and every assignment a major hurdle. Tutors can help, of course, but they’re expensive and can’t do everything without cheating your child out of the “I can do it” sense of self-efficacy that can serve them well through life.

How can you help your want-to-be scholar reach their potential? We asked educators and learning experts for their top tips. Here are five of their best answers.
1) SEEK OUT TESTING EARLY
If your child gets extra help at school but isn’t making progress academically, seek out an evaluation at school and/or at a private neuropsychology assessment center, says Mark Mahone Ph.D., a pediatric neuropsychologist at the Kennedy Krieger Institute at Johns Hopkins University.
Studies suggest that 15 to 20 percent of the population has a learning disorder of some type, such as dyslexia, a specific reading or language comprehension issue or a math disorder. reading or
“Learning disorders occur throughout the range of intelligence. Even very highly functioning students can have them,” Mahone says.
A learning disorder is when a child or anyone who has had adequate opportunity for instruction and has the adequate intelligence to be able to learn specific skills, isn’t learning those skills in a way that’s appropriate for their age. Learning disabilities are biological conditions that lead to a set of behaviors that can be challenging. They tend to run in families.
“Kids can’t help it,” Mahone says.
If your child has a learning disorder, it’s important to diagnose it early, if possible, to prevent harmful repercussions. Continually tanking on tests and quizzes or not understanding the material can affect your child’s self-esteem and brain development.
“The average child with a reading disability doesn’t get identified until the second or third grade,” says Mahone. “By then, that child has two, three or four years of failure before getting the appropriate intervention.”
Intervention may include behavioral treatments that can help the brain reorganize more efficiently so that academic skills build naturally over time, making school easier and less stressful. Intervention via medication may also be suggested but that decision is highly personal for families and should not be taken lightly. Many families today advocate for less medication for kids.
It’s important to note that learning disabilities don’t typically occur in isolation. For example, 35 to 40 percent of students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) also have dyslexia and vice versa. Learning disabilities should be treated at the same time.
“Whenever you find one learning disability, you should look for others,” Mahone says. “For the best outcome, everything should be treated concurrently.”
2) BREAKFAST AND HEALTHY SNACKS MATTER
“Learning is like driving a car. You have to keep filling the gas tank,” says Sharon Rose Sugar, an academic interventionist and author of Smart Grades: Every Day an Easy A (Smart Grades; 2010).
“It takes tremendous energy to learn, but many kids are running on empty.” Cold cereal for breakfast doesn’t cut it. “What can make a big difference in the morning is just a bowl of oatmeal,” Sugar says, topped with nutritious add-ons like walnuts, blueberries, cinnamon,
honey or maple syrup.
Kids should fuel homework sessions with wholesome study snacks too, such as an apple or rice cake with peanut butter or carrots and hummus and water. The brain is a power tool. To boost performance, “after every homework assignment, kids should eat something healthy,” Sugar says.
PREVIEW HOMEWORK, THEN TAKE A BRAIN BREAK
If your child is typically anxious about homework, teach them to review their homework assignments when they get home from school, including the questions they need to answer, then to take a break before diving in.
“Kids aren’t under any pressure to answer those questions right away,” says Katherine Firestone, founder of “The Happy Student” podcast. “When they come back to their homework, it’s a lot easier for them to start their work because they’ve previewed it,” Firestone adds.
HOW TO READ THE WORK
Kids have so many facts coming at them in every class and homework assignment, they can easily miss important information. To help them retain key ideas they’ll need later during tests, they need to be active readers. Active reading means that before reading the full text of anything, kids should first read the chapter title, headings, subheadings and the questions at the end.
“Reviewing first helps kids understand the key ideas,” says Firestone. Then, while they’re reading the main body text, they can underline main ideas and jot down notes to cement ideas. These techniques can make a big difference. Active reading helps facts sink in and provides a skill kids can use throughout their lives to better absorb the main points.
TALK YOURSELF INTO BETTER GRADES
“When you get As or Bs, school is more enjoyable, but some kids — especially those with learning disorders — have emotional roadblocks to getting good grades,” says Paul J. Hughes, a college professor and author of Change Your Grades, Change Your Life: Find the A Student in You (Create Space Independent Publishing; 2016)
During elementary school years, kids with learning issues can form negative self-perceptions, such as “I’m bad at taking tests,” which gets hardwired into their subconscious, programming them for failure through their schooling years.
To help struggling students talk themselves into doing well on tests, Hughes teaches them to write and recite specific affirmations — questions that address their specific academic concern, but stated as a positive, such as: “Why am I so comfortable and confident taking an exam?” and “Why do I always perform up to my expectations on an exam?”
“The ‘why’ at the beginning is what the brain picks up and runs with, reprogramming the subconscious to believe what you’re telling it,” Hughes says. He tells his students to read their affirmations every day. “I say, ‘I know affirmations are weird but they can change everything.’ The more you read them to yourself, the sooner they kick in.”

Noble Spring Dairy Farm
Cuddle baby goats and give your littles a taste of farm life!
by Rebecca Bright
If you’re looking to cuddle a goat or two and introduce your child to a local farm experience, look no further than Noble Springs Dairy Farm — located just six miles from downtown Franklin at 3144 Blazer Road. On Saturdays, Noble Springs offers the chance for visitors to cuddle and play with baby goats from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The drive from Nashville takes about 40 minutes, but our 3-yearold enjoyed the scenic drive, calling out every cow, horse and barn she saw!
The Noble family meets visitors at the check-in pavilion (which offers seating and a nice view out of the sun). Right away, our toddler noticed an adjacent tree swing and playground area and wanted to explore it plus a grassy area with plenty of balls for throwing and kicking.
LITTLES LOVE PETTING GOATS
A tent near check-in is where the baby goat cuddling takes place. Inside a gated pen, we took turns cuddling two baby goats. My daughter loved petting them. She tried to hold one, but the “kids” (both goat and human) were too excited to sit still. Bigger children can hold them, and one had his hair chewed on giving us all a good laugh. Please note that the animals are inside of an electric fence (if your Little touches it, they will get shocked!).
At 11 a.m., the owner, Dustin, gave a 45-minute tour of the farm. He assured us it was OK to come and go, as the tour is more geared for adults. My husband took our daughter to see the chickens and more goats (and then went back to the playground).
The tour includes the operation room where goats are milked and cheese is made ... only, you don’t get to see it happen.
All in all, we enjoyed our two hours at Noble Springs, even though our daughter was mostly

interested in the playground
Any beautiful day outdoors supporting a local farm is time well spent. On our way out, we stopped by the pavilion to buy goat cheese and soap/lotion (if they’re in stock). We purchased pimento and the garlic-herb goat cheese spread and it was delicious! The goat cheese products and shirts can make a unique birthday/holiday gift for those who enjoy supporting local. There are also additional snacks and water for purchase. Saturday goat cuddling is $12. Children 2 and younger are free. Noble Springs offers other events too, such as private farm tours and an evening of Goats & Guitars (Sept. 16). Visit noblesprings.com to learn more.
