LOVE: The One Thing All Parents Share
A
s a new mom, you are 100 percent susceptible to family, friends and perfect strangers sharing advice, asked for or not, whenever you have your baby in tow. It will sometimes seem like all talk, small or big, is about your baby. Women in grocery stores, or out and about somewhere, feeling a shared union, will say things to you like, “Oh, he must be hungry,” if there is so much as a cry from the car seat. Wherever I went for the first year or so of my four children’s lives, whether I was with colleagues at work or at a cocktail party with friends, it was all baby talk. “Is she sitting up?” “Does she sleep through the night?” “Getting any sleep? (wink, wink),” “Have you tried giving her rice cereal yet?” “She must be teething,” “It must be gas!” and the dreaded, “What I did with MY baby ...” Sigh. I didn’t mind so much — having a baby is all consuming. But sometimes the passed down tips were very confusing. I’d hear, “Oh, I didn’t do that, what I did was ...” sort of thing. “Use a cold compress, then use a hot one!” Finally, somewhere in the middle of my baby’s first year, I’d sprout my mama wings and realize: No one knows anything. They don’t know any more than I do. We’re all sort of just winging it. Terrific that your baby was potty trained at 18 months. Mine wasn’t until he was 2-and-a-half. That’s great that your newborn slept through the night by week two; I’m still working on that at six months. What you come to realize is that nobody — not even the experts and influencers making a living out of being in the know — is familiar enough with your single little one to really tell you what to do. It’s such a relief when you learn to trust yourself! When you decide THIS is how I will do it because it works for my baby. But still the army of opinionated mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmothers will come. And sometimes the men folk, too, although they’ve evolved pretty much to know that when it comes to women and babies, it may be best to stay in your lane. There’s one thing that is common among parents, that doesn’t change or can’t be argued over no matter what anybody says. It’s love. And love generates instincts for your child’s care. In love with your baby, transfixed by them, when you are confused by suggestions and advice, you ultimately must make the call based on your instincts. No book or suggestion is the end all. Listen to your doctor, but even then, trust yourself to know what’s best for your child. Children grow up quickly — that’s one thing all parents with grown kids know — and there is ONE piece of helpful advice all busy parents need to hear: To try to live in the moment with your kids — it’s the only way to slow it all down. Try to be present while raising them because it is not a race to the finish line. If you can master living in the moment with your kids, you will never regret what you don’t remember. Now go enjoy the holidays!

QUESTION: “They say, ‘Never wake a sleeping baby,’ (from a nap) but what about toddlers? I need mine to sleep through the night!”
Should You Wake a Toddler? PARENTS SHARE OPINIONS “Nope. Overtired babies don’t sleep well. Heck, I still won’t wake my youngest (age 4) from a nap even if he falls asleep at 4 p.m.; he doesn’t nap typically and has sleep issues, so if he’s sleeping we let him sleep unless it’s time to get up for school or therapy.” Crystal Cameron “Yes. It’s called sleep training and it helped my kids sleep thru the night at eight weeks and seven weeks.” Tania Stringer Freeman “Absolutely not! Never. And I’ve never had a problem with them sleeping at night.” Brandy Lunsford “Never did that for babies because they need a lot of sleep. We have dropped naps around 2 - 3 years old because they won’t go down at a decent time when they nap. Some toddlers nap and go to sleep well like my oldest and others don’t like my two youngest.” Kelly Peterson
“Naps yes. Night time, no. Their bodies don’t automatically know night from day. If you want their brain to release the right sleeping chemicals at the right times, you’ll want to wake them if their naps are too long.” Alexis Carver “No! Never wake a sleeping baby.” Susan Crump Herndon “Yes, have done, depends on the time of day length of nap etc. If is getting too late into the afternoon/evening most definitely or we end up having the troubles not only staying asleep but just going to sleep at night!” Maddi Kirkby “No. After 38 kids in my home I know you never wake a sleeping baby. Usually good naps lead to great nights.” Rose Osborne Whitledge “I only woke them up if they slept more than two-and-a-half hours.” Jamie Rideout

n the book Sleep Solutions: Quiet Nights for You and Your Child from Birth to Five, (Lion Books; 2013), author Rachel Waddilove says a good day of rest for a toddler begins with consistency. Yet all toddlers and situations in families are different. The key reasons for waking a toddler from a nap may include: • Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule • Balancing daytime and nighttime sleep • Ensuring adequate nighttime sleep • Adjusting to changes in routine Consistency, routine and creating a conducive sleep environment are key elements in promoting healthy sleep habits for toddlers. If you have concerns about your toddler’s sleep, it’s always a good idea to consult with your pediatrician or a sleep specialist for personalized guidance.

PARENT NEWS
Teaching Kids to Give as They Receive Learning about generosity to others can begin very simply.
T
his time of year is called the giving season and people everywhere decide how they will help. Many parents want their kids with plenty to be aware of others less fortunate than themselves. According to Vicki Hoefle, author of The Straight Talk on Parenting: A No-Nonsense Approach on How to Grow a Grown-Up (Routledge; 2015), the best way to teach kids to think of others is to work on it throughout the year, always noticing others and areas of need. Still, the holidays make a great time for going a bit deeper with kids to foster their generous spirits. Hoefle says to introduce your children by finding easy ways they can make a difference around them and then to build from there. “I think the best way to encourage kids to give back is to model it and make it a part of everyday life, which can be hard because life is busy,” Hoefle says. Not only does giving make the world a better place, it feels good, too. Plan a moment to talk with your kids about ways your family can help in the community. Listen to their ideas and if you’re not sure where to begin, take a look at our easy roundup and help your kids to learn what it’s like to make a difference in someone else’s life. — susan day

Your baby does not care that it’s time for the extended family feast. So expect interruptions and have an exit plan in mind if unexpected

Simplify traditions
Keep traditions as simple as possible this year. Sitting in a dim room gazing at the twinkly lights is the kind of new tradition you can eagerly embrace. Here are few other simple ideas. Read a holiday book aloud before bedtime. Take your time getting out of bed in the morning, if at all possible. Take after-lunch naps. Babyhood is fleeting. Slow down and squeeze all the sacredness you can out of this special season. Having Baby at the center of your holidays will only make each moment more special.
