Travel safe in summer

Remember to always check more than one source of fire information. Visit cfa.vic.gov.au, call 1800 240 667, check the VicEmergency app, listen to local radio, talk to your host and visit an accredited Visitor Information Centre.

Summer is the perfect time to discover regional Victoria. Wind down and enjoy Victoria’s breathtaking scenery and diverse natural environments knowing you’ve taken a few steps to stay bushfire safe.

Know which weather district you are visiting so you can check the Fire Danger Rating for that district and if there are any fire restrictions.

On hot, dry, windy days, check Fire Danger Ratings and warnings. Fires can start and spread quickly on these days and parks and forests may be closed.

Check to see if a Total Fire Ban has been declared for the area you are visiting.

Check the weather and listen to local radio for advice and warnings. Download the VicEmergency app.

Save the Victorian Bushfire Information Line (1800 240 667) into your mobile phone.

Don’t rely on electronic mapping devices. Mobile phones and GPS may be affected by smoke and local conditions. Make sure you carry hard copy local maps and listen to the radio.

Visit an accredited Visitor Information Centre. Staff may be able to suggest alternative holiday activities on high risk days and provide local fire and park information.

Never travel into a high risk bushfire area where the Code Red Fire Danger Rating has been declared or where fires are burning.

Rejuvenation.

That’s what our region is all about. Easy access to spectacular nature, world-class food and drink experiences, a buzzing creative community, and our famed wellness and spa offerings are some of what makes the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region so popular.

For millennia, Indigenous people have seen the area as a place of gathering and healing. More recently, the wealth driven by the gold rush bestowed upon us some beautiful villages and unique Swiss Italian culture. Another cultural legacy are our ‘makers and creators’; you can join one of many classes and workshops, or buy some beautiful pieces of art.

For many though, it is the ‘nature at your backdoor’ that brings you here. Hiking up Hanging Rock, riding the Goldfields Track, or sampling the many natural mineral springs are just the start. And the best thing about a hike or ride, is that you can indulge in a fantastic dinner or lunch afterwards perhaps pairing it with one of our cool climate wines, craft beers or spirits.

Approximately an hour by car from Melbourne’s CBD or Melbourne Airport, or a short train journey from Southern Cross Station, you’ll soon be immersed in the revitalising air of Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges region.

FOOD & DRINK

Life really is about good food and drinks, and our region has a bountiful selection of the finest food, cool climate wines, spirits, ciders, mineral water, awardwinning produce and more. Explore farm gates, farmers’ markets, cellar doors and chef-hatted restaurants; meet farmers, vignerons and restaurateurs who are dedicated to growing, producing and serving the very best that the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region has to offer.

The chocolate-brown, metre-deep topsoil that surrounds our old volcanoes grows some of the best potatoes on the planet and lambs so plump they almost roll around the paddocks. The historic villages in the region are home to some of the best restaurants in the state, from fine dining establishments to family friendly cafés, country pubs and wineries.

This superbly fertile farmland gives way to the granite country of the Ranges, where massive boulders are strewn like giants’ marbles. This hard but beautiful country makes the grapevines concentrate their aroma into fewer, more intensely flavoured grapes, hence our award-winning cool climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and sparkling Blanc de Noir. We don’t have big businesses dominating our

wine industry, just families making wine in old woolsheds, 18th century bluestone buildings and brand spanking new, architecturally designed cellar doors.

With such great produce, it’s no wonder that some of the nation’s best artisan bakers, cheesemakers, charcutiers and boutique vegetable growers have planted roots and opened their doors across the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region. Pack a picnic rug and come and spend some time with us exploring the glorious countryside, making a few new friends along the way.

MINERAL WATER SPRINGS

In days gone by, it was the allure of gold that drew people to this verdant land.

Today, it’s the elixir of life. Water. Or more specifically, the underground network of natural mineral aquifers that are more abundant here than anywhere else in Australia. In fact, 80% of the country’s natural mineral springs are found in this region.

It’s called mineral water for a reason. Sourced from nature, the abundance of mineral springs in this region possess naturally occurring essential minerals that have been lauded for their health benefits for centuries.

The natural mineral springs bring life to this region, evident in the lushness of the landscapes and the very special tastiness of the produce grown in the mineral rich earth. It’s no coincidence that the words bio-dynamic, organic and natural apply to so many of the area’s food and wine producers, and why their produce is sought after by anyone who cares about what they eat and drink.

Most of the region’s natural springs are located in the areas surrounding Daylesford, Hepburn Springs and Kyneton, with many located on public land where the water can be tasted and pumped directly from the ground.

WALKING & HIKING

Whether you’re after a gentle stroll or a challenging hike, this region provides many options. Trek through the region’s spectacular surrounds, from the magnificent Trentham Falls to Mount Franklin’s awesome volcanic crater to the iconic Hanging Rock. Make your way up to the Memorial Cross pinnacle in the Macedon Regional Park. Scale rugged rockfaces in Wombat State Forest or the 300-metre gorge in Lerderderg State Park.

MACEDON REGIONAL PARK

Over 400 species of native plants have been recorded in the Macedon Regional Park and more than 200 species of birds and a wide variety of mammals can be found here, including koalas, kangaroos, swamp wallabies, wombats, possums and gliders. There is ample opportunity to explore the park on foot via a series of walks that make up the Macedon Ranges Walking Track. visitmacedonranges.com

HEPBURN REGIONAL PARK

SECRET FOREST WALKS

Experience the beauty and seclusion of the Wombat Forest, assisted by GPS technology. No clubs or tours, just you and the company of your choice, or solo if you wish. GOLDFIELDS TRACK

The Goldfields Track is a point to point 210 km track stretching from Ballarat in the south to Bendigo in the north. It passes through some of the region’s most historic towns and beautiful forests, including Creswick, Daylesford, Hepburn Springs and Castlemaine. DOMINO TRAIL

CYCLING

No matter the type of riding you love, there is the perfect trail, track or quiet road awaiting your adventure.

GOLDFIELDS TRACK

The Goldfields Track was constructed by gold settlers over 150 years ago and today is well known amongst cyclers and walkers. The Wallaby Track section will take you from Mount Buninyong through to Daylesford. This 90 km track is for fit and confident riders and can be done in one day.

Keen mountain bikers and history buffs love the ‘Dry Diggings’ section from the Chocolate Mill in Dry Diggings through to Vaughan Springs and on to Castlemaine. goldfieldstrack.com.au

MACEDON REGIONAL PARK

The fire tracks on the side of Mount Macedon range from flat trails that are gentle enough to allow you to teach little kids to ride bikes (say in the Macedon Scout Camp area) to rocky, white-knuckle descents (such as Barber’s Chute Track). WOMBAT FOREST

Near Woodend, you’ll discover 100 km of purpose-built single track winding through beautiful forest. Built by the local Wombat Mountain Bike Club, the trails suit beginner to expert riders and are accessible year-round. wombatmtb.com.au

Mount Macedon’s greatness is visible from all parts of this region. Known as Geburrh in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people. It is crowned by the historic Memorial Cross, which each ANZAC Day plays host to one of the largest and most moving dawn services in Victoria.

Recognised at Victoria’s Top Tiny Tourism town, the hillside village of Mount Macedon is home to some of the country’s most magnificent historic and private gardens.

A short drive to the village of Macedon brings you to the spectacular Honour Avenue, with its magnificent oaks that honour the 154 local men and women of Macedon and Mount Macedon who enlisted for service during the First World War.

One of the best times of the year to visit this area is as the season changes, when nature puts on a stunning display of autumn colour that is second to none.

Not far from Mount Macedon is the ethereal and iconic Hanging Rock (Ngannelong), made famous in the classic Australian film Picnic at Hanging Rock, adapted from the novel of the same name by Joan Lindsay. However, while the film raised awareness of ‘the Rock’, it has been a place of great significance to Indigenous groups for millennia. It is located near the traditional boundary between three Aboriginal tribal groups – the Woi Wurrung (Wurundjeri), the Dja Dja Wurrung and the Taungurung. Each has its own perspectives and stories, but evidence suggests that the group were highly inter-connected and it is clear that Ngannelong was a sacred place for all three groups and was used for ceremonies, meditations, and initiations for at least 26,000 years, possibly 40,000 years.

The nearby village of Woodend is a perfect staging post to explore this area further with its enticing mix of cafés, stores and the famous Holgate Brewhouse, where a drop of ale is just the thing. The local Visitor Information Centre

has the latest information on all things worth discovering.

Lancefield is at the geographic heart of Victoria, and whilst modern day fossicking is encouraged in the local galleries, antique stores and more, it’s also the place for anyone with an interest in something a tad older. Did you know that a wealth of important paleontological finds have been unearthed here from extinct megafauna including Macropus titan (a kangaroo-like animal twice the size of today’s largest relative) and Diprotodon (a rhinoceros-sized wombat lookalike)? Lancefield Brewery, known as The Lost Watering Hole, tells the story of these ancient creatures.

Outdoor pursuits are in abundance here, with a rousing round of golf at the Gisborne Golf Course under the gaze of the grazing kangaroos, highly recommended.

1 DAY ITINERARY

Breakfast: Start your day with a hearty breakfast at the charming Newham General Store, where the menu heroes local produce. Nab one of the outdoor seats on a sunny day and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, all just a stone’s throw from the iconic Hanging Rock.

Morning: Once you have your fill, explore nearby Hanging Rock Reserve, the views from the top of ‘The Rock’ are well worth the short, yet steep hike. Reward yourself with a treat from the Hanging Rock Café at the end of your explorations.

If you still have energy to burn, tackle one of the many walks found in Macedon Regional Park For spectacular views, follow the Camels Hump Trail to the highest peak in the Macedon Ranges (at 1011m). For a gentler walk, head to Sanatorium Lake and follow the audio-guided Murmuring Walk.

As you make your way down Mount Macedon, be sure to pop into Forest Glade Gardens At almost 100-years old, this beautiful European style garden encompass around 6 hectares (or 14.5 acres).

Lunch: Nestled on the sunny western slopes of its namesake, Mount Macedon Winery produces

some of the region’s most diverse cool climate wines. Treat yourself to the set-course menu in the restaurant or opt for a casual bite at the cellar door. Be sure to say hello to the resident highland cows before departing.

Afternoon: Head off on a mini-tour of the region, discovering wineries, cideries and breweries. Suggested stops include Mount Monument (also home to a sculpture park), Hanging Rock Winery (home to the annual Art in the Vines exhibition), Big Tree Distillery, DV Cider, The Lost Watering Hole (Lancefield Brewery) and Mountain Distilling.

Dinner: Make your way back to Woodend. After wandering the historic main street, pull up a pew at Holgate Brewhouse and enjoy some elevated pub grub paired with one of their famous tasting paddles.

After dinner: End your day with a night cap at the Rock and Wombat Bar at Woodend’s Victoria Hotel. Here you can sip on a local drop as you read about the fascinating history of the hotel on the walls that surround you.

Conglomerate Gully Walk

Riddells Creek’s best kept secret, Conglomerate Gully is a magnificent rocky gorge, estimated to be about 440 million years old. The 2.8 km walk will weave you through a hilly eucalypt forest with native grasslands and orchids in the spring time. The track is steep and rocky in parts.

Hanging Rock, formed six million years ago, is said to be one of the best examples in the world of a volcanic feature known as a mamelon. The reserve offers many great experiences such as the summit walk to the top of the rock, Australian native wildlife, picnic areas, an annual film night under the stars, horse racing and concerts. Romsey Village

A pretty spot to visit with an eclectic mix of food, wine, shopping, history and heritage. Its historic red brick buildings line a spacious main street giving it an English village feel. Be sure to visit the Romsey Ecotherapy Park, this accessible space features multiple nature-play spaces, a sensory garden, artistic features and BBQ and picnic spaces. Romsey is also the ideal launching pad for exploring nearby wineries.

Travel 4 km along Cameron Drive from the summit of Mount Macedon Road. The 21 metres high Memorial Cross is located 200 metres from the carpark. This imposing, iconic structure commemorates those who bravely served in the

world wars. There are outstanding views of the surrounding country from the Reserve.

Murmuring Walk at Sanatorium Lake, Mount Macedon

Murmuring Walk is an audio-guided walk reflecting the environment, birdlife and natural rhythms of Sanatorium Lake, Mount Macedon. Participants are invited to wear headphones connected to their personal device and enter a contemplative space as they are led by a sublime multi-layered vocal and poetic soundtrack. The audio guided walk is free and can be done at any time.

Camels Hump is the highest point in the Macedon Ranges (1,001 metres), with a lookout offering visitors spectacular views. This is one of three local rocky outcrops formed by volcanic action millions of years ago and is generally quieter than Hanging Rock. Your dog is welcome too.

Woodend Children’s Park covers one hectare on the banks of Five Mile Creek. It has an eight metre climbing wall, a breathtaking flying fox, sheltered areas, barbecues, fenced playground for toddlers and space for children to run. From there, head to Istra Smallgoods to pick-up delicious cured meats, direct from their farmgate. Before you unwind for the evening visit the iconic Convent Gallery or book a walking tour with Alice’s Journeys to stir your imagination and leave you with a sense of wonder.

Trentham Falls

Trentham Falls is one of the longest single drop waterfalls in Victoria, dramatically plunging some 32 metres over basalt columns. Trentham Falls was formed five million years ago from molten lava rapidly cooling as it flowed along the old Coliban River valley. The Trentham Cascades are a short walk further north from the Falls Reserve carpark.

Spa Country Railway

Step back in time as you board a restored heritage train with Daylesford Spa Country Railway. The return journey trundles past open farmland and thick forest, passing the sites of ancient volcanos and little communities established in the gold rush era. Train rides operate every Sunday from the Daylesford Railway Station – which is also the location of the popular Daylesford Sunday Market.

Hepburn Mineral Springs Reserve

Located at the northern end of town, these natural springs are home to the iconic Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa, the Hepburn Pavilion Café, an extensive network of bush walking tracks and BBQ facilities. The park has a collection of mineral springs, some flowing continuously, and others operated with a hand pump. Visitors are able to freely bottle their own bubbling mineral water from the springs which include Locarno, Soda, Sulphur and Wyuna.

Relax in the country, find tranquillity, breathe fresh air, listen to birdsong, be refreshed and enjoy the space and beautiful vistas at Lavandula. At its heart is the golden stone Rustico, a cluster of farm buildings constructed by Italians from southern Switzerland who came to look for gold and stayed to farm. Lavender is planted as crop art; in winter it’s trimmed and sculptural; at Christmas the lavender is in flower and is harvested through the heat of January, by hand with sickles.

Mount Franklin Reserve

Mount Franklin, or Lalgambook, as it is known by the Dja Dja Wurrung people, is an extinct volcano offering fine views on the approach to the summit. The sheltered crater is a superb place for a picnic or simple camping set amongst huge and pretty conifers and deciduous trees, creating an exotic atmosphere. Mount Franklin is a fine example of a breached scoria cone. The breach, through which the road now enters the crater, is thought to have been caused by a flow of lava breaking through the crater rim.

Breakfast: Start the day at the socially responsible Social Foundry Choose from the all-day breakfast menu, which features simple wholesome food as you sip on a specialty coffee. The little ones are well catered for too, with a menu for ‘the little peeps’.

Morning: A short stroll away, you’ll find the Old Auction House Peruse the two gallery spaces at this multi-use arts precinct, before picking up a gorgeous Australian handmade gift from the retail shop.

After getting your arts fix, make your way to the impressive Kyneton Botanic Gardens, before strolling along the Campaspe River Walk, which links up with Piper Street

Next, curate your own picnic hamper at Piper Street Food Co., filling it with tasty morsels such as their famed pork pie, Cornish pasty and Belgian chocolate brownie.

Then hit the road, discovering the relatively unexplored, mounds of enormous granite boulders scattered across the landscape between Kyneton and Baynton. Make sure you have your camera handy.

Lunch: Stop in at Granite Hills Wines. Perched atop the spectacular boulder strewn hills of the

Baynton, the views from here are spectacular. Enjoy a tasting of their many award-winning wines before tucking into the goodies you picked up Piper Street Food Co.

Afternoon: Make your way back Kyneton and explore historic Piper Street Enjoy a spot of shopping at Camilla on Piper, The Woolshed Australia and Stockroom Combine your shopping at the thoughtfully curated homewares store Kabinett, with a cocktail or a cheeky negroni at the adjoining Botanik. Next, wander across the road to the cosy and welcoming Miss M’s Lounge, where you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into owners, Mike & Heather Allen’s, own home as you enjoy the delicious Spanish style tapas menu, paired with a finely crafted cocktail.

Dinner: Be transported from Spain to Asia as you stroll further down Piper Street to Fook Shing, named after a Chinese Detective posted to the goldfields during the gold rush and believed to have stayed onsite. Each dish at this vibrant Southeast Asian inspired restaurant and bar is designed to be shared.

Discover historic Kyneton

If you have an interest in some of the finest historic buildings in regional Victoria, Kyneton is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. A walk around the town’s centre will take you past a number of 19th century civic buildings, churches, schools, commercial buildings and private homes, many dating back to the 1850s. Each of these buildings has their own fascinating stories about the people who lived and worked in them. Kyneton’s oldest building, the singlestorey bluestone former Anglican rectory on the corner of Piper and Ebden streets, dates back to 1850. Today, this beautiful building set in half an acre of gardens has been lovingly restored and now offers luxurious accommodation for visitors to the area.

Campaspe River Walk

Running alongside the Kyneton Botanical Gardens is the historic Campaspe River Walk, which stretches from the Gardens to the bottom of Piper Street and beyond to the Racecourse. It provides a stimulating walk along the river and passes through the wonderful Sculpture Park near Quarry Reserve and features information on the river’s heritage.

Relatively unexplored, mounds of enormous granite boulders lie scattered between the district of Kyneton, Pyalong, Baynton and Tooborac. Millions of years of erosion have left rock formations, ancient and worn with an appearance of giants’ marbles strewn across the landscape like an unwanted game. The area is extremely photogenic. Discover wildflowers, wildlife and structures like the Nulla Vale Balancing Stone and Tooborac Rock Monument. Find pastures dotted with sheep, cattle and contrasting monolithic natural sculptures. For those who enjoy a weekend drive, cruise across plains, undulating hills, windswept bushland and imagine a day when it was a favourite spot for men of ill-repute.

This museum’s collection reflects the life and times of Kyneton and wider district from around the 1850s to the 1930s and is housed in an authentic National Trust bluestone building that was the former Bank of New South Wales built in 1856. There are changing exhibitions in the original banking chamber, and upstairs the bank manager’s residence is preserved in time. Outdoor exhibits include original bluestone stables, a servants’ kitchen and laundry. The museum is also home to a wide variety of carriages and historical agricultural equipment so that you can expand your knowledge of Victorian farming history.

Breakfast: Start your day with a wholesome breakfast at Harcourt Produce & General Store, where the menu draws on produce from their own kitchen garden. Be sure to pick up some local goodies, including Harcourt’s famous apples to take home with you.

Morning: If you’re into mountain biking, hit the tracks of the nearby La Larr Ba Gauwa Mountain Bike Park. Riders can tackle world-class mountain bike trails, with plenty of ‘green’ rated trails for kids and beginners as well.

Alternatively, journey across to the historic hamlet of Maldon. After exploring the various boutique stores and galleries along the charming main street, pop into the gift shop at Warral Maldon and pick up some of the best honey you’ll ever taste.

Lunch: Next stop is Das Kaffeehaus, which can be found within The Mill precinct in the heart of Castlemaine. This grand Viennese coffee house serves up Austrian delicacies, paired with small batch roasted coffee. Make sure you try the mouth-watering Apfelstrudel.

Afternoon: An hour or two is easily spent exploring The Mill precinct. Located within the site of the old Castlemaine Woollen Mill, this converted space is now a creative hub for foodies, artisans and

purveyors of collectables and curiosities. Lose yourself perusing the myriad of stalls at Castlemaine Vintage Bazaar, home to 2000 square metres of vintage wares. Then pop into Long Paddock Cheese and taste some of their delicious French-style artisan cheese.

The Mill is conveniently located opposite the Castlemaine Botanic Gardens. Follow the path around the picturesque lake and be awed by the towering cypress trees.

For further garden adventures, pop over to Buda Historic Home & Garden, home to three acres of beautifully manicured heritage gardens. Be transported to another era as you explore the adjoining 1860’s built Italianate-style home.

Dinner: For a casual dinner paired with some live tunes, head back The Mill and tuck into some pizza and shared plates at Shedshaker Brewing. Wash down your dinner with one of their tasting paddles, which feature four of their small-batch craft beers.

Or for something more intimate, head to Wild, local produce heroes the menu at this cosy restaurant and wine bar, located within the old Castlemaine fire station.

Malmsbury Viaduct

The Malmsbury Viaduct is a feat of incredible stone engineering, built in 1859 using thousands of labourers to carry the Bendigo railway line over the Coliban River. It is one of Victoria’s largest 19th century engineering structures, consisting of five-arched spans reaching 152 metres from end-to-end. Best access point is found along the walking track from the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens.

Malmsbury Botanic Gardens

Once you’ve collected local goods from the surrounding provedores, farm gates and wineries, head to the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens. Established in the 1850s, the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens is one of Victoria’s earliest regional botanic gardens, encompassing a wonderful collection of trees and shrubs along with a few surprises from its rich past. The central focal point of the gardens is the Ornamental Lake with the formed island at its centre. The fountain was built in the 1930s from bluestone salvaged from a nearby demolished mill. Both the fountain and the lake edges have been restored in recent years and the Dutch elms planted at the front of the lake were planted as a memorial to soldiers of the First World War.

Victorian Goldfields Railway

The Victorian Goldfields Railway operates along the formerly disused line between Castlemaine and Maldon. Their elegant carriages provide you with a glimpse of what it was like to travel during the golden age of rail. Opened in 1884, this is the last remaining fully operational branch line built to open up rural Victoria in the late 19th century. Return trips run every Wednesday and Sunday.

It is one of the most intact 19th century towns in the Central Goldfields, boasting original shop fronts and buildings. The widely acclaimed annual Clunes Booktown Festival is a must do, as Clunes is one of only 15 internationally recognised Booktowns, and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. Morning: Walk off your breakfast with a wander down Creswick’s leafy and elegant main boulevard. Stop in for a spot of shopping at The Farmer’s Wife, home to a gorgeous collection of quality clothing and homewares.

A visit to Creswick isn’t complete without checking out the iconic Creswick Woollen Mills, first established in 1947. Experience a slice of Victorian history at their original Mill, which is home to an award-winning interactive exhibition ‘A Very Fine Yarn’.

Next, make your way to Maze House just outside Creswick. The ideal stopping point for the young or young at heart, Maze House boasts a 27-yearold hedge maze set in a five-acre country carnival garden. Be sure to grab a snack from the retro Milk Bar

Lunch: Continue on to Blampied and stop in for lunch at the historic Swiss Mountain Hotel. This weatherboard beauty dates back to 1865 and features polished concrete floors, a huge, curved bar and a large contemporary dining area, allowing for a spacious (and delicious) dining experience.

Afternoon: After lunch, pop over the road to Overwrought Sculpture Garden & Gallery. Browse through the captivating collection of artisan wares and admire the beautifully landscaped sculpture garden where larger works are uniquely displayed.

Then it’s time to head north to the historic hamlet of Clunes. It’s easy to imagine you have stepped back in time as you peruse the boutique stores and charming bookshops that line the beautifully preserved main street. Film aficionados may also recognise the town as the backdrop to a number of classic Australian films, including Mad Max and The True History of the Kelly Gang.

Ensure you leave some time to visit Tuki. Try your hand at catching a rainbow trout as you enjoy incredible views over the surrounding countryside. A firm family favourite.

Dinner: Return to Creswick and enjoy hearty, home-cooked favourites at the newly opened Three Founders restaurant at RACV Goldfields Resort. Named in honour of the three Creswick brothers, who founded the town in 1842, this family-friendly venue features classic favourites using local and seasonal ingredients.

Creswick of the Lindsays Arts Trail

The Lindsays, one of Australia’s best known artistic families, are synonymous with Creswick. The Creswick of the Lindsays Arts Trail comprises of 24 sites of importance to the family, and weaves through 7.6 kms of the town, including the Creswick cemetery where seven members of the family lie. The best place to start the trail is at the Visitor Information Centre at the corner of Albert and Victoria Streets where you can collect a trail guide.

Creswick Calembeen Park

Calambeen Park in Creswick is home to two beautiful lakes that are teeming with birdlife and displays of waterlilies. It was once the town’s Chinese camp in the goldmining days, now you can visit the park for walking, cycling, swimming and fishing. The restored dive tower is especially popular in the warmer months.

Visitors are instinctively drawn to the scenic parks and cool, relatively undisturbed forests of this part of the region. The Wombat State Forest and Lerderderg State Park are some of the most ideal natural locations for spotting Australia’s much-loved furry creatures, such as koalas, kangaroos and wombats.

Bacchus Marsh to Blackwood proudly owns a rich history worth exploring. Originally inhabited by the Kutung, the Wathaurong, the Wurundjeri, the Jaara and the Ngurelban Indigenous tribes, this connection can still be seen through place names such as Myrniong, which was named with the murrnong plant in

mind, the Aboriginal word for ‘yam daisy’ – a popular food source.

Successive waves of farmers, goldminers and timber workers have all shaped the personality of this land with the legacy still on show in the small towns of Blackwood, Bacchus Marsh and beyond. One of Victoria’s famous bushrangers, Captain Moonlight, has even been associated with this area.

in winter. Or you can eat your way around the newest cafés, restaurants and check out the provedores focussing on the rich pickings from local producers.

As you enter Bacchus Marsh, it’s hard not to miss the famous Avenue of Honour, a truly grand road lined by hundreds of elms, oaks and plane trees, planted to honour those who served during World War One.

Breakfast: Enjoy breakfast at RedBeard Bakery in Trentham. Choose from their wide selection of sweet and savoury delights. Be sure to pick up one of their famed sourdough loaves, baked in their 140 year-old Scotch oven.

Morning: Take the picturesque drive south through the Wombat State Forest to the hillside hamlet of Blackwood. Wander the tiny main street and pop into Martin Street Coffee Roasters, where they air roast their aromatic coffee beans in small batches onsite.

From there, it’s a short drive to the Garden of St Erth. Spend some time in quiet contemplation as you explore the beautifully manicured gardens, before picking up some heirloom varieties from the extensive nursery.

Lunch: Hop back in the car and make your way to Blackwood Ridge. The drive up the dirt road is well worth it for this restaurant, which is nestled amongst lush gardens. Choose from the menu which features a wide range

of produce grown onsite and which reflects seasonal availability from kitchen garden to plate.

Afternoon: It’s time to get off road. Lerderderg State Park can be accessed via either Blackwood or Bacchus Marsh. The Lerderderg River has carved a deep and picturesque gorge through this rugged park – making it an ideal location for a relaxed picnic or a hike (with some great family friendly options too).

Alternatively, check out the beautiful lake at Colbrook Reservior within the Wombat State Forest, just north of Ballan (four-wheel-drive is recommended).

Dinner: Satiate your appetite after an afternoon spent exploring the great outdoors at the welcoming Great Western Hotel in Ballan. Tuck into some elevated pub fare as you enjoy the eclectic 70’s vibe.

Access is off the Ballan Daylesford Road by dirt track and best by fourwheel drive.

Soda Mineral Water

When gold was discovered in Blackwood, it was a dark, wet forest with rainfall exceeding one metre yearly. Chinese miners panning in the Lerderderg River found springs on either side; one is now known as Soda Spring. In 1887, a government analyst described the springs as an equal of Apollinaris, a German mineral water selling for two shillings and sixpence a bottle. Today you can sample and bottle the spring water free - how awesome!

Lerderderg River

This river is known for the Lerderderg Gorge Picnic Ground, camping, bushwalking and fishing activities. In earlier days, gold was mined in the upper reaches, and some of the old mines (considered dangerous to enter) can be seen as you travel along the sluice on the east bank, which previously fed into those mines.

Lerderderg State Forest

This is the Victorian Visitor information symbol. You’ll find this yellow “i” on roads all over Victoria and it means you’re not far from one of our accredited Visitor Information Centres. They are your guarantee of up to date quality information and expert advice about every piece of Victoria and they are open from 9am – 5pm, seven days a week (except Christmas Day and Good Friday).
