PROGRAMS USED SketchUp, Revit , Photoshop, InDesign

SUMMARY Makerspace + is a co-working space and educational community center focused on the creative arts. The mission of Makerspace + is to connect the community with artisans so that they can create and innovate better together. The design features a variety of studios and workshops, office and conference spaces, classrooms, work cafes, and a public gallery space. CONCEPT In order to design a vibrant community space that inspires users to create and innovate better together, the design for Makerspace+ is heavily dictated by color psychology. Throughout the space there are a range of zones that accommodate a variety of creative disciplines in one cohesive building. Each zone is assigned a different color from the tertiary color family based on it’s function. Not only does this serve as a means of way finding, but it also helps to foster the intended activities of each respective space based on the psychological and physiological responses of the user.

Rendering of Reception and Waiting Area

CUSTOM MILLWORK In order to create a reception space that is more secure and private, the design features a custom builtin desk. The round shape creates an inviting atmosphere as the clients enter the facility. Another unique feature of the reception desk design is a built-in closet space that displays seasonal clothing items available for the mothers and their children to take home free of charge. Not only does this help create a more residential feel in the space, but this also creates a feature space where clients can spend time while they are waiting.

ONE ABOVE

CLIENT One Above

PROJECT TYPE Retail

LOCATION San Diego, CA

SQUARE FOOTAGE 5,400

YEAR Junior Studio, Spring 2016

PROGRAMS USED SketchUp, Revit, Photoshop, InDesign

SUMMARY One Above is an upscale specialty retailer of women’s active wear that was created by Fashion Merchandising students. The mission of One Above is to empower women by promoting wellness and building confidence. Interior Design students were then challenged to create a flagship retail space based on the brand strategy and direction provided in order to create a space that reflects One Above and appeals to their target market. CONCEPT In order to create a relaxing and inviting environment that empowers and energizes women, the design features a harmonic blend of soothing natural materials and tones with dominant geometric patterns. Strong angular axises allow for great visuals throughout the store making it easy for customers to find what they are looking for and for sales associates to monitor the floor. These angles are also featured on the 2nd floor in the multi-functional Yoga Studio. The rhythmic geometries create well organized displays and storage that evoke a calming effect.

23

CLIENT VISIONING In order to better understand the aesthetic the client wanted for their space, I created multiple vision boards for the client to look through and determine which images best encompass their brand. From the schemes presented to the client, these images were the ones that stood out to the client as being the best representations of what they would like their store to look and feel like.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Based on client feedback from the initial visioning session, I created a few preliminary design solutions for the client to review. They approved the solution which featured strong angular axises and a green wall at the pointof-sale. From there I went on to further develop that solution to create the final design for One Above.

LIGHTING STUDY Since lighting is such an imperative component of retail design, multiple study models were created in order to study how to best light the merchandise in a creative and effective way. The initial model was cut out by hand to do a quick preliminary study. The final model was created using AutoCAD and a laser cutter to help demonstrate how the lighting works in the space. The main fixtures used in the design were Linear LED Strip fixtures and ceiling mounted LED spotlights.
