Wade Hebrink: TRAINER Kyle Laughlin: STRENGTH
It’s hard to have imagined a better debut for Tortugas right-hander Bryce Bonnin. In game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday, July 7, against the Jupiter Hammerheads at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, the Baytown, Texas native faced 15 batters. Bonnin retired them all in order. For good measure, loaded with a 97.6 mph fastball and a devastating slider, the 22-year-old generated 14 swings and misses on 31 attempts (45.2%) en route to an 11-strikeout debut. The 11 punchouts tied the team season-high and registered a match for the second-most since the franchise rebranded prior to the beginning of the 2015 season. James Proctor whiffed 11 Hammerheads, as well, to ignite a combined no-hitter on May 22 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark earlier this campaign. The record is 12 by Amir Garrett at ‘The Jack’ on May 30, 2015, against the Clearwater Threshers. The beginning of Bonnin’s career has not been an easy one. Selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the third round of the 2020 MLB Draft out of Texas Tech University, the right-hander was named to Daytona’s initial roster on May 2, but was quickly placed on the injured list two days later before the season opener in Palm Beach against the Cardinals. Shortly thereafter, Bonnin was on a flight back to Arizona and the Reds’ complex in Goodyear for rehab. “It’s good to have gotten out of Arizona and rehab,” said Bonnin after his dazzling ‘Tugas debut. However, the first-year pro was quick to thank the group of people who helped him get back on the hill. “A lot of credit to our rehab staff out there [in Goodyear],” stated Bonnin, “they got me ready to get out here, so Marcus [Ahrens], Eric [Gonzalez], Alex [Puskarich], all the strength coaches, a lot of credit goes to them.” While not an ideal way to start your foray into the professional ranks, Bonnin believes his extra time in the lab during his rehabiliation process will do him wonders not just for Daytona in 2021, but in the years to come. “It wasn’t ideal,” said the former Red Raider, “but I feel like it was something I needed. I needed to find a routine. Pre-throwing, post-throwing, the weight room. We’ve got an incredible staff out there [in Arizona] that was able to help me get ready. I feel like a lot that they were able to help me with I’ll use not only this season, but the rest of my career.” Now that he’s back with the Tortugas, the 2019 College World Series participant is just excited to get back to work. “I’m very grateful to just be back, healthy, and hopefully can last the rest of the season.”
