GOOGLE HQ SOUTH AFRICA Johannesburg, South Africa Google Completed 2015

The Google Jozi project boasts an accreditation of both a 5-star Green Star rating as well as a Gold Leed certification. The project was inspired by its contextual fabric of Johannesburg (or better known to locals as, Jozi), South Africa. The conceptual design was inspired by the visual language and culture of the vibrant city with its unique flavour and mixmatch personality. Many items for the design were sourced from the city, contributing to the concept’s implementation through an authentic initiative to upcycle and reuse objects and non-conventional building media alike, consistent to the personality of the city. The project created a platform for questioning the standard approach to green design by reinterpreting the necessities of a workplace setting, aligning the requirements with the city context and attending to the needs of the specific users. Local artists, furniture and materials were employed to develop an interior concept that functions as an extension of the Jozi city vibe. To ensure a homogeneous transition between environments and their uses, all important fields contributing to the project’s mindfulness of sustainability and responsible design were considered. Views to the exterior, visual comfort, internal air quality, ergonomics, waste monitoring and recycling initiatives, daylight harvesting and energy-efficiency were, amongst others, developed in a way to be conducive to a comfortable work environment. Second-hand magazines, advertisement banners, crates, reclaimed timber and African beads are, amongst many others, some of the non-traditional materials sourced from the city and used within the design. Overall Winner - International Green Interiors Awards 2015

THE POINT Pretoria, South Africa NeoTrend Properties Completed 2011

The Point is home to Boogertman + Partners’ Pretoria office. Designed to be a ‘background’ building, The Point’s simplicity makes a quiet statement. The building’s scale responds to the surrounding area and its white facades softly hug the curve of Jan Shoba Street, with various departments, libraries, internal meeting rooms, a kitchen and breakaway spaces. Space for the company’s expansion has also been provided for.

13

KING PRICE Pretoria, South Africa King Price Insurance Completed 2013

A quirky, young-at-heart interior design solution for a quirky, young-at-heart insurance provider. The brief called for an interior design that speaks of the energetic vibe that King Price prides itself in. King Price relocated from an open plan office environment with little opportunity for social activities to an office which focused on supporting the company’s vibrant and spirited corporate culture. This challenged the project to rethink the role of communal spaces in an office environment. Clients are invited into the workplace and encouraged to interact with staff in both formal and informal environments, therefore the design had to question the traditional role between front-of-house and back-of-house areas. The wallpaper graphics is placed on the periphery of the interior and therefore allows for transparent thresholds between the public and private zones. This reinforces the company’s prerogative for being an interactive and visibly shared space. Frameless glass partitioning ensured that the graphics can be seen throughout the interior and allowed natural light to enter into the central part of the floor plate.

BASIL READ Johannesburg, South Africa Basil Read (Pty) Ltd Completed 2011

Through innovative use of space, color, texture and graphic design, Basil Read’s new head office interiors emphasizes the creative value their services provide in infrastructure development. Their brand identity is manifested in the interior where the construction landscape is transformed into a play of lines and a series of rhythms. The graphic doodles flow from the skyline onto the frameless glass partitions, and appear to suspend in mid air like a rhythmic gymnasts ribbon, frozen in space and time. These lines manifest into everyday activities on a building site such as builders having lunch, architects carrying the all-important rolls of paper, and security guards keeping a watchful eye over the building. These phantom characters seem to populate the space, even when there is no one around. Not even a mouse.

27

PODIU M AT M EN LY N Pretoria, South Africa Emira Property Fund Completed 2013

The seamless triangular union of glass and off-shutter concrete was inspired by ancient engraved artworks found in the Blombos Caves on the Southern Cape coast of South Africa. This symbolizes a bridge between a 77 000 year old culture and the future of South Africa. Inspiration was also drawn from the ancient Chinese Tangram dissection puzzle. The design team met the client’s “Icon” part of the brief by transforming this ancient game into a magnificent triangular grid which features on the eastern and southern facades of the building. Even the basement and lift lobby artwork makes use of these tans to create a “geometrical garden” within an urban space, giving one the feeling of being in a digital landscape. The artwork transforms a once dull basement into an exciting space, through which one enters for a day’s work. The design suggests both the archaic nature of its origins and the sophistication of 21st century technology.. 29

T HE FA L LS PICK n PAY Johannesburg, South Africa Atterbury Properties (Pty) Ltd - Pretoria Completed 2012

The Interior of the restaurant took its inspiration from natural elements and textures. The interior finishes are a juxtaposition of warm timber, chocolate brown face brick to match the façade and natural earthy colours. Splashes of lime greens, blues and tangerine contrast with the neutral shell and create focal points within the space. Pick n Pay’s Corporate Identity was translated into the shape of the layout as well as the joinery design. The client brief was to maintain the restaurant brand which had been born at Thyme on Nicol, but to improve on it in terms of aesthetics and practicality. Acoustics were an important factor in the design and therefore textured surfaces were used to absorb the noisy atmosphere created by restaurant whilst creating an intimate, comfortable environmental for its customers. In a nutshell, the restaurant is a fresh and lively space where energy efficiency merges with aesthetic ambience. A big supporter of sustainable design, The Falls is another example of Pick n Pay’s commitment to a greener, healthier lifestyle through the reduction of their environmental impact, encouraging customers to follow suit.

SAGE VIP

Pretoria, South Africa Menlyn Maine Investment Holdings / Festiglo (Pty) Ltd Completed 2012

Research shows that the space in which people work is hugely important to the way they do their jobs. It is clear that, by working with employees to enrich the workspace, businesses can help their workers feel engaged and inspired, with clear benefits in helping companies grow and achieve their aims. In light of staggering changes in the world of work, there is every reason to re-consider office design. The traditional layout of corner offices with windows surrounding a matrix of cubicles is a scheme born in a bygone era using borrowed thinking from assembly lines in factories. It is entirely unsuitable for many modern companies, especially in the knowledge or creative industries. It is also important not to replace this with a new style of workspace that tries to make the physical environment resemble something like the Internet where, in a sense, all occupants are placed in the same flat, wide-open space. This is one of the main challenges facing a company moving office is the transition from closed plan offices and smaller more intimate work spaces to a large, collaborative open plan office. The brief was that one should get the feeling of being in a green building as you enter through frameless glass sliding doors. The base building is neutral and calm, with natural finishes such as honed marble, timber and warm textured plaster. The tenant fit-out is brighter and fresher, defining each floor with its own colour. These colours – teal, green, yellow and blue – are expressed in the signage, pause area finishes, artistic wallpapers and decals used on the frameless glass partitioning.

The idea is to strip, clean and repaint the interior of the building to create a neutral shell, with dedicated graphic walls which navigate the user through the building. Accent colours used will reflect NERSA’s corporate identity. The idea of energy should be illustrated through the use of graphics and decals on glass shop fronts. Colour is still key in businesses today as can be seen in company’s corporate colours. The Interior uses all the colours of the NERSA brand, dedicating the certain colours to certain functions. For example, Pause areas are a cool blue as a space to relax, where kitchens are appetising orange. The interiors of the circulation spaces will be so designed to envelop movement and flow.
