Welcome
Happy New Year! Without sounding grumpy, I’m not really a big fan of January. After the excesses of Christmas, I resent the changes, feeling guilty for not instantly switching from mulled wine to cranberry juice, or pyjamas to gym kit. Taking the tree down is always a bitter moment (was that corner always that bare? Do we really have to take it down?). Everything looks plainer, and dark nights without fairy lights are all the longer. But, on the positive side, we have a fantastic January issue packed full of lovely food that just happens to be healthier. Flavoursome, satisfying and easy on the eye, our warm salads on page 37 promise to be healthier but not too goody two shoes! We’ve also chosen the nation’s favourite meals and created lower-calorie and lower-fat versions (page 29). I make the turkey burgers at least once a week but have to admit that mine comes with a dollop of low-fat crème fraîche at the very least… and a cheeky glass of wine. You only live once!

Asda’s free-range egg noodles are produced by Kanes Foods in Worcestershire. ‘The unique thing about these noodles is they’re made fresh in our factory every single day of the year – apart from Christmas Day,’ says Production Director, Mark Harris (left). This means they’re much better quality than dried egg noodles, which are manufactured, dried and rehydrated when cooked.
‘Our process is completed daily and our noodles are truly fresh. They’re a great meal solution with stir-fry vegetables and sauces.’ Mark Harris ‘To make these noodles, we use an authentic recipe of flour, free-range eggs, water, salt and turmeric,’ says Mark. Each week, Kanes Foods supplies Asda with 86,000
bags (42 tonnes) of fresh egg noodles. They’re super quick to prepare and you can create delicious Asian dishes, including stir-fries, soups and cold salads.
‘My favourite way to eat these noodles is to stir-fry fresh prawns with an Asda Hot & Spicy Stir-fry vegetable pack, add a handful of fresh egg noodles and finish off with some Asda Sweet Chilli Sauce,’ says Mark. There are many types of noodles available (see panel, above), but Kanes Foods focuses on fresh egg noodles, as well as dehydrated rice noodles.

FOOD FRESH IN STORE
Damon Johnson Head of Produce Quality
All Asda’s tender spring greens are grown in the UK, and they’re one of our best-selling cabbages at this time of year. To make sure they are as fresh as they can be, we get them from the field to the store in 24-48 hours. Not bad, eh? SPRING GREENS This versatile cabbage arrives early in the year and its bright green leaves are sweet, tender and packed with flavour. Spring greens are easy to prepare: simply remove and wash the leaves, then slice or chop. You can use them in stir-fries and soups or, for a tasty side dish, lightly steam the leaves and toss with a little butter and black pepper.

MUSHROOMS Use as the star ingredient in dishes such as casseroles, risottos, salads, sauces and pies. Mushrooms are also great for bulking out meals, so you can use less meat but still get a tasty, filling result. To prepare, wipe mushrooms gently with kitchen paper and slice, chop or leave whole, as required. Store fresh mushrooms in a paper bag in the fridge, where they will keep for 3-4 days.
FRESH TAKE ON
Parsley
Whether it’s the traditional curly kind or the stronger flavoured flat-leaf variety, parsley is the most widely used of all the herbs. Finely chopped fresh parsley leaves are great in soups, stews and dressings; the stalks can be added to stock; or use a sprig of parsley for a classic attractive garnish.
Grapefruit
HOW TO PERFECTLY SEGMENT…
1 Slice off the top and bottom of the grapefruit with a sharp paring knife.
2 Cut away the peel and pith from top to bottom, following the contours of the fruit.
3 Carefully slice down either side of the membranes to release segments one by one.

Chill for 20 minutes. Prick the base with a fork. Line the pastry case with foil and weigh it down with baking beans or rice. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove the foil and beans or rice and cook the case for another 5 minutes to lightly brown the pastry.
Reduce the oven to 160C/ 140C Fan/Gas 3. Whizz the pineapple in a processor or with a hand-held blender to make a rough purée. Put 3tbsp of this in a bowl and the rest in a pan. Add the lemon zest to the pan. Mix the purée in the bowl with the lemon juice, cornflour and 25g of the caster sugar until smooth. Add this mixture to the pan and heat, stirring all the time, until the mixture comes to the boil and thickens slightly. Tip into a bowl and leave for 10 minutes to cool slightly. Stir in 25g butter and 3 egg
yolks. Tip into the flan case and bake for 15 minutes. Whisk the egg whites in a large clean bowl until they form stiff peaks. Add the rest of the caster sugar, a heaped tablespoon at a time, whisking until stiff after each addition. Put the meringue on top of the pineapple mixture, making sure it covers it completely. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Leave to cool for at least 15 minutes or serve at room temperature. Best served the same day.

Homemade soda bread tastes delicious and has a gorgeous crust that’s so satisfying. The secret to making this yeast-free loaf is to handle the dough as little as possible – the exact opposite of making ordinary bread – and bake it as soon as it’s made. Plain flour is used instead of breadmaking flour and the raising agent is bicarbonate of soda combined with a slightly acidic liquid. Traditionally, buttermilk is used as an aid to rising the dough, but here we’ve combined natural yogurt with milk to get the same result.
450g plain white flour (not breadmaking flour), plus extra for shaping 1 level tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 level tsp salt 1 level tsp caster sugar 300ml natural low-fat yogurt 150-180ml milk

2 Mix the yogurt with 150ml of the milk. Add to the flour mixture in the bowl and mix with a large spoon until the mixture comes together – you may need to add a little more milk to make a soft but not sticky dough.

4 Transfer to the baking tray and, using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross in the top. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes. If the loaf starts to brown too much, cover the top with a loose piece of foil shiny side up for the last 5 minutes. To test if the loaf is cooked, tap the bottom – if it sounds hollow, it’s ready.

Preheat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt and caster sugar into a large bowl. Sifting ensures the bicarbonate of soda is distributed well in the flour, which means the loaf will rise evenly.
Flour your hands and bring the mixture together. The bicarbonate of soda starts to work as soon as it mixes with the liquid, so you need to work quickly and handle the dough as little as possible. Gather the dough into a ball and put on a floured work surface. Shape into a round loaf about 20-22cm across.

WEEKEND COOKING FOOD

Fish pie is perfect for weekend entertaining because you can make it earlier in the day, or even the day before, and just put it in the oven to cook when your guests arrive. Serve with a side salad or green vegetables.
Shopping list 650g potatoes, (peeled weight) 50g butter 300ml semi-skimmed milk, plus 4tbsp for the mash 2 x 325g packs Asda Fish Pie Mix 1 small shallot 1 bay leaf (optional) 25g plain flour 2tbsp curly parsley, chopped 50g Gruyère or Cheddar cheese, grated
How to make it Asda’s Fish Pie Mix, £3.20 (325g), features succulent pieces of haddock, Scottish salmon and smoked haddock – and all these delicious flavours together make one great pie the family will enjoy! Preheat the oven to 190C/ 170C Fan/Gas 5. Put the potatoes in a pan, cover with cold water and bring to the boil. Simmer for about 15-20 minutes until tender. Drain and return to the pan. Stand over a very low heat for a minute to drive off excess moisture. Mash the potatoes with 25g butter and 4tbsp milk. Season well, cover and set aside. Meanwhile, put all the fish in a large, wide-based pan. Add the shallot, bay leaf and 300ml milk. Cover and heat gently until the milk is just simmering. Simmer gently for 10 minutes or until the fish flakes easily. Strain off the milk and discard the bay leaf and shallot. Break the fish into large flakes and put in a fairly shallow, oven-proof dish. Set aside. Melt the rest of the butter in a pan. Remove from the heat and stir in the flour. Stir over a low heat for a minute.
Gradually whisk in the milk, using a wire whisk, and then bring to the boil, whisking all the time until the sauce is creamy. Stir in the parsley. Season to taste – you may not need salt because the smoked haddock will be salty. Pour over the fish and mix gently. Cover the fish with the mash – the easiest way is to put large spoonfuls over the top, then gently spread and level with the spoon. Sprinkle over the cheese and bake for 25-30 minutes. Alternatively, allow the finished pie to cool at the end of step 6 and freeze. You can also chill the pie for up to 24 hours. It will take about 40 minutes to cook straight from the fridge. If frozen, defrost in the fridge for 8 hours and then cook for 40 minutes. CALORIES

There’s easy ways to make fresh food last longer – follow our storage tips then turn over for recipe and freezing ideas for leftovers

None of us likes seeing good food go to waste, but every year £12 billion worth is binned in the UK says Love Food Hate Waste. The good news is there are things we can do to make our food and money go further. Storing it the right way is a great place to start. Try the ideas below to help keep it fresher and tastier for longer.
Storage tips Bread
Potatoes
Tomatoes
Fruit
Store bread in a cupboard. Once opened, fold the wrapper under the loaf or re-tie to keep it air-tight.
Remove from their plastic bag as this tends to make them ‘sweat’. And store them in a cool, dark place.
For optimum taste, tomatoes should be stored and served at room temperature rather than the fridge.
Ripe fruit will last longer in the fridge, except bananas and pineapples – keep them in the fruit bowl.
Keep your fridge temperature below 5°C. If it’s too warm, food won’t last as long as it could Visit lovefoodhatewaste.com
Meat and fish Cooked meat and fish will keep in the fridge for up to three days – (cool and leave no longer than 90 minutes, then wrap it well). Raw and cooked meat should be kept separate at all times. Store raw meat in a sealed container on the bottom shelf of the fridge so it can’t touch or drip onto other food.
Leftover chicken & barley broth
Soup tips ● Thicken it
♦ Dice
a large carrot, slice a trimmed leek and cook in 1tbsp oil with a chopped large onion for 6-7 minutes. ♦ Add 750ml chicken stock, (homemade or made with a stock cube). Simmer and add 150g pearl barley. Cover and simmer for 35 minutes. ♦ Add 300g leftover cooked chicken, torn into bite-sized pieces, along with 100g shredded savoy cabbage. ♦ Simmer for 5 minutes until the chicken is piping hot. Bolognese tips ● Make mince
Leftover roast beef can be minced with a hand mincer or food processor. Freeze, then use another time to make a meat sauce. ● Freeze tomatoes
Fresh tomatoes can be used instead of canned ones in a Bolognese sauce. Simply remove their stalks and freeze the tomatoes whole in freezer bags. Don’t defrost before cooking, as they’ll go mushy!
To help thicken your soup, simply whisk in some leftover mashed potato and heat through. Alternatively, remove half the vegetables and blend with a little stock until smooth, then return to the pan. ● Crispy croutons
To make some homemade croutons for your soup, toss chunks of bread in olive oil and bake until crisp and golden. This is a great way to use up stale pieces of bread and they add a delicious crunch to any soup flavour.
Leftover Bolognese Quesadilla ♦ Lay
4 flour tortillas on a board and top with 350g leftover Bolognese sauce. ♦ Sprinkle over 100g grated Cheddar cheese and top each one with another tortilla. ♦ Cook on a griddle or in a frying pan for 3 minutes on each side until heated through. ♦ Sprinkle with chopped fresh coriander and serve with salad. or croissants Instead of using leftover bread in this dish, why not add leftover brioche or croissants? And rather that cutting them into triangles, tear off small chunks. ● Fruit sauce
Use any leftover raspberries to make a delicious fruit sauce served with ice cream or other fruits. Whizz with a handheld blender or in a processor, with a splash of orange or apple juice and a little icing sugar. Freeze in small containers.
Leftover bread pudding ♦ Preheat
the oven to 160C/ 140C Fan/Gas 4. Generously spread 6 slices of leftover bread with butter, then spread with marmalade. ♦ Cut into triangles and arrange overlapping in a greased ovenproof dish. Beat 3 eggs with 50g caster sugar, 400ml milk and ½tsp vanilla extract. ♦ Pour over the bread and press it lightly into the liquid. Leave to soak for 10 minutes, then cook at 180c/160C Fan/Gas 4 for 30 minutes. Scatter over some fresh raspberries for the last 5 minutes of cooking. Serves 4 CALORIES

Transform this dish by adding tomato sauce and any leftover vegetables, then bake it in the oven to make a delicious pasta bake the family can enjoy. ● Sausage wrap
Add any leftover sausages and your favourite salad to a flour tortilla to make a tasty wrap for lunch. ● Freeze onions
If you don’t use a whole onion, chop up the rest and pop it in a sandwich bag in the freezer and you can use it straight from frozen the next time.
The big freeze
Using your freezer more can help save time, money and effort. Just think of it as a colder cupboard. As well as freezing leftovers, use it to store reduced items or multi-buy offers on bread, meat, fish and fruit.
Bread winners You can blitz crusts and slices into breadcrumbs and freeze to use in stuffings or to make a crispy coating for strips of chicken or fish – dip in beaten egg, breadcrumbs, then bake or fry. Alternatively, you can use breadcrumbs for home-made meatballs or burgers – they act as a good binder for meat. They’re also great for adding to the top of lasagne and cauliflower cheese. And it’s always handy to keep a sliced loaf in the freezer. Pop a frozen slice into the toaster – it just takes a little longer to toast.
Make chicken stock This is a real family favourite. When you’ve used the meat, simmer the carcass in water with some celery, carrots, onion and herbs for 2-3 hours to make a stock. Measure into pint portions and freeze so you’ll have a tasty base for soups, risottos and stews. If you don’t have time to make the stock immediately, freeze the bones so you can do it later.
Freeze fruit
Divide meat portions Buying larger quantities of meat and fish can often work out cheaper. Simply divide up the packs into smaller portions and freeze. If you defrost raw meat and cook it thoroughly, you can freeze it again. Always defrost meat properly before cooking. Look out for our 3 for £10 offer currently in store on selected packs of meat and fish.
Keep some frozen fruit in your freezer so that you can make a healthy drink anytime. Fruit such as raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and kiwi fruit are ideal for smoothies and juices. Slice or cut larger fruit into chunks before freezing. Kick start your day by whizzing mango or summer berries with 300ml fruit juice in a liquidiser – apple juice works well.

Extra Special Beef Bourguignon Try our slow-cooked Bourguignon for flavoursome comfort food that’s been given the seal of approval by Leiths School of Food and Wine
‘What could be better on a chilly evening than this hearty beef Bourguignon? The Extra Special range is the perfect choice when you want a treat but don’t have the time to make it yourself. Together, we’ve done the hard work for you so you can serve restaurant-style food without spending hours in the kitchen.’ Nikki Dixon, Head of Brand Development for Asda
Beef Bourguignon is a slow-cooked classic and is typical of the traditional techniques taught at Leiths School of Food and Wine. Our version is made using full-flavour British beef cheeks, currently celebrated by leading chefs. It’s cooked sous-vide (in a water bath) at very low temperatures, with red wine, mushrooms, shallots and bacon lardons, resulting in an incredibly tender dish with a rich, indulgent sauce. SERVING SUGGESTIONS The Extra Special range also includes great-tasting side dishes. We’ve served our beef Bourguignon with
Dauphinoise Potatoes and a Green Vegetable Medley (right), but you could also go for our Lightly Crushed Carrot & Butternut Squash. If you enjoy red wine, try our French Cabernet Sauvignon – its rich blackcurrant flavour complements the beef wonderfully. And for dessert, you’ll love our refreshing, zingy French lemon tart. SIDE DISHES ♦ Extra Special: Dauphinoise Potatoes, £2 (430g; 46.5p/100g); Green Vegetable Medley, £2 (170g; £1.17/100g); Tarte au Citron, £3
♦ Extra Special Beef Bourguignon, £6 (650g; 92.3p/100g), available online and in selected stores

Slimming World… Try it, trust it, love it!
With a no-hunger eating plan, plus unbeatable support and encouragement all the way, discover how the UK’s favourite way to lose weight can help you turn your resolution into reality
Hollie’s story
When Hollie Majthenyi, 21, from Derbyshire, joined Slimming World in the hope she’d drop a couple of dress sizes, she never realised it would give her a whole new attitude to food – and life! ‘Initially, I blamed my increasing weight on exam stress, although deep down I knew I was making the wrong eating choices, from my chocolaty breakfast cereal to my favourite supper – a homemade crisp sandwich. Everything I ate was processed, wrapped in plastic or bought from a vending machine. ‘I went along to Slimming World with my mum at my side for moral support. After avoiding the scales for eight months, I could have cried when I saw how much I weighed – I was almost a stone heavier than I thought. No wonder I couldn’t fasten my “baggy” size 14 jeans any more! ‘During my first group meeting, I kept my head down, embarrassed at the state I felt I’d got into. But the next week, I couldn’t help but smile. Even though I’d eaten huge portions of healthy, filling food all week, I’d lost 4½lbs! ‘Week by week, the ideas, recipes, motivation and support I shared at Slimming World changed my life. The positive feedback I got from
BEFORE A diet of crisp sandwiches and other unhealthy food choices meant that Hollie’s weight had crept up.
AFTER ‘I love going shopping now that I’ve got more confidence – and I’ve swapped my baggy jeans for mini-skirts and lots of colour!’

Know your
FATS
We all need some fat in our diet to enable our bodies to function, but some fats are healthier than others. Here’s our guide to the good, the bad and the ugly... Thirty-three per cent of us avoid foods that contain fat* – but it’s about knowing the difference between the good and bad types. ‘Good’ fat helps our bodies absorb certain nutrients – it’s a source of energy and essential fatty acids, and is crucial for a healthy metabolism and cell renewal. DIFFERENT TYPES OF FAT There are two main types of fat: saturated and unsaturated. Although both contain the same amount of calories, only unsaturated fats are considered better for you.
70 | ASDA.COM/MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2013
EFFECTS OF SATURATED FAT The liver turns saturated fat into cholesterol – too much can increase your risk of heart disease and raise your blood pressure. Asda nutrionist Hayley Marson says, ‘In the UK, the problem is that, on average, we already eat more than the recommended dietary amount for saturated fats. To help decrease cardiovascular disease – the leading cause of death in the UK – we should reduce bad fats in our diet.’ If you’re worried about cholesterol or blood pressure, visit your doctor or Asda Pharmacy.
‘At Asda we’re committed to helping our customers lead a healthier lifestyle,’ says nutritionist Hayley. The nutritional information provided on our products helps them make more informed, healthy choices. And Asda’s nutritional traffic light system on packaging makes it even easier when we shop. Look for foods that are low in total fat and saturated fat – this will show as green on the label, while red indicates that the food is high in fat. Hayley explains, ‘A claim that a food is low in fat may only be made when the product has no more than 3g of fat per 100g for solids or 1.5g of fat per 100ml for liquids.’ As a guide, 'high in fat' means more than 20g of fat per 100g. As well as using the traffic light system on packaging, we also use it on recipes in the magazine so you can keep track with the meals you make. CALORIES

WHAT DOES ‘REDUCED FAT’ LABELLING MEAN? If a food is described as reduced fat, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s low in fat – just that the food is at least 30 per cent lower in fat than the standard equivalent. So if the food is high in fat in the first place, the reduced-fat version may still be high in fat. For example, a reduced-fat mayonnaise could still have an amber traffic light. Also bear in mind that food marked as reduced fat can often be high in calories, because the fat is replaced with sugar. So check your labels to get savvy on the fat and calorie content.

THE BAD FATS

THE GOOD FATS
KNOWING THE GOOD FROM THE BAD UNSATURATED FATS can help reduce the harmful cholesterol-producing effects of saturated fats. The maximum daily amount of fat we should eat is 70g for adults. Of this, only 20g should be saturated. ate ed. Unsaturated fats can be split into two types, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated.
POLYUNSATURATED FATS are found in sunflower and nd rapeseed oil, nuts, seeds and spreads. Omega 3 iss also a a type e of polyunsaturated fat – good sources include oily fish, h, such as salmon and fresh (but not canned) tuna. Omega 3 oils are also found f d in i walnuts. l t Th These fats have been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels.
MONOUNSATURATED FATS can also help lower cholesterol. ‘They are a significant component of the Mediterranean diet, primarily in the form of olive oil,’ says Hayley. ‘Other sources include olives, avocados and certain nuts and seeds. Monounsaturated fats have been credited with lowering levels of heart disease.’ Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are good for the heart and circulation.

Plant oils s Use oils, such as olive, sunflower or rapeseed sparingly in place of butter and animal fats. ats.
3
Nuts Swap biscuits uits for a handfull of almonds or cashews..
4
SATURATED FATS are found in animal-derived sources, such as meat, high-fat dairy items and eggs – so limit your intake of butter, cheese, cakes, biscuits and pastries. Saturated fats can also be found in some vegetable fats such as palm and coconut oils.
Avocado cad do Delicious in salads, spread on toast or use to make guacamole for a tasty dip.
TRANS FATS fall into two types: the naturally occurring type, pe, found in small amounts in dairy products and meat; and d the t kind that is created when liquid oils are hardened into partially artially y hydrogenated y g fats. It’s this artificial type that is of greater concern in the UK diet, although Asda has removed hydrogenated vegetable oil from its own-brand goods.
HOW TO CUT DOWN ON SATURATED FAT Try these simple changes to your diet: ♦ Choose lean cuts of meat, trim excess fat and remove poultry skin. ♦ Opt for semi-skimmed, skimmed or low-fat dairy products rather than full-fat versions. ♦ Swap butter, ghee and lard with unsaturated fats,

Give your home a New Year reboot with our easy ways to declutter
Old mobile phones, expired insurance policies, piles of till and bank receipts and clothes you’ve been planning to slim into for years… If you’re surrounded by clutter at home, it’s time to clear the decks. By making time to do this, you can save time in the long run. According to a survey by storage.co.uk, one in 10 people say their clutter is damaging their health or causing problems in their relationships. So whether you’re holding onto things for sentimental reasons (and 50 per cent of us are) or simply haven’t got round to sorting stuff out, be ruthless and take control by recycling it, selling it, donating it to charity, binning it or using clever storage solutions to reclaim space in your home. You’ll feel better for it…
Phones and electricals Instead of stuffing them in a drawer, cash in your old mobiles, MP3 players, digital cameras, sat-navs and games consoles via ASDA.com/techtradein. Go online and follow the instructions, then pop your gadgets in the post and we’ll give you up to £250. Online auction sites are another way of selling unwanted stuff.
74 | ASDA.COM/MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2013
57%
of people in the UK say they don’t have enough time or feel they have better things to do than spend it clearing out their clutter.
Furniture Of the 10 million pieces of furniture thrown away each year in the UK, three million could easily be reused*. So think before taking unwanted stuff to the tip. As long as an item is in a saleable condition and meets safety standards, many charities will take it away for you – go to frn.org.uk to find details of organisations in your area. Local councils also offer a collection service for old furniture. When buying new furniture, think about ‘hidden’ storage. Look for coffee tables with shelves and drawers, sofas with under-seat storage and benches that double as storage boxes. This Asda walnut storage box, £30 (right), will look good in a room or hallway, and the Asda Camden ottoman, £49 (above), is ideal for bed linen or clothes.

the old Storage for kids Donate or recycle children’s outgrown clothes and toys – charities often appeal for toys in good condition – or hold a car boot sale. Encourage your little ones to be tidy with storage designed with kids in mind. We have a great selection in store, including pop-up room tidies, £5 each (left), also available in Hello Kitty and Spiderman designs. Persuade older kids that these tidies are a great alternative to the floor for their laundry, and invest in other neat solutions such as this three-drawer storage unit, £11 (right). Also look out for the Asda three-drawer tower storage sets in blue or pink, £15.

Photographs If you’ve got boxes of old photos from the days before digital, why not scan them onto your computer (with a back-up copy just to be safe) and send the originals to friends and family? You’re sure to make the recipients happy with all those shared memories – and you’ll have one less box to worry about!
£200 MILLION is the amount of money that charities in the UK raise each year by selling goods donated to them.
The one-year box You know those things you should chuck out but you hang on to ‘just in case’? Put them in a box. Seal it and date it. If it’s still sealed after 365 days, donate the box to charity – without opening it. You probably won’t even remember what was inside!
Clothes Have a ruthless clear-out of your wardrobe. Anything that doesn’t fit, doesn’t make you feel great or you haven’t worn in a year, can go. You’ll find textile banks in Asda car parks for the Salvation Army and Tickled Pink. Make the most of the space you’ve cleared by using multi coat hangers for skirts and trousers or tiered hanging units that fasten over a wardrobe rail. For shoes and bags, use boxes such as this Minky folding storage box, £9 (above). Out-of-season clothes can be packed away in vacuum-seal bags and stored on top of the wardrobe or under the bed. Vacuum-seal bags (scented, £1; giant, £2; five-bag sets, £5) are available from ASDA.com/direct.

HOMES MAKING SPACE
You don’t need to keep all your paperwork forever. Cash machine slips and credit/debit card receipts can be shredded once they’ve appeared on your statement, and payslips can go once you’ve checked them against your P60. Bills and statements more than two years old can be shredded – unless you’re self-employed, in which case you need to hang on to them for at least six years. For the rest of your filing, 10 folders should be enough, with labels such as Family, Medical, Property, Household Bills, Car, Work, Statements, Warranties, and Receipts, Tax, and Miscellaneous. Then take the in-and-out approach – when a new policy goes in, the old one goes out. But if you really want to cut down on the filing and help the environment, too, you could always go paperless and get all your utility bills and bank statements online. For all your filing solutions, visit ASDA.com/direct or see in store.
Make-up and toiletries Check your make-up: bin anything that’s over a year old as it may have gone off or be harbouring bacteria. Store everyday cosmetics and toiletries separately so you have them to hand. A set of two nesting baskets, £9 (above), is ideal. Or keep toiletries tidy in an organiser hanging on the bathroom door. 76 | ASDA.COM/MAGAZINE | JANUARY 2013
Instant clutter fixes
Beautiful boxes Whether you put them on display or keep under the bed, boxes are a godsend for storing clothes, shoes and bags. As well as keeping things tidy, they protect from sunlight, moths and dust. A two-box striped storage set, £15 (left), or these pretty striped boxes, £8 for 2-pack (right), are handy and smart. For no-extra-cost storage, your empty suitcases are ideal, especially if you keep your holiday gear in them! Hooks and rails Put these up inside cupboards, under the stairs and wherever you’ve got dead space – they’re great for storing coats, scarves, bags and anything else you can hang up. This will help to keep your hallway clear of clutter. Kitchen store-alls Don’t just bung your pasta and pulses in the cupboard – decant them into plastic or glass containers and they’ll make an attractive display. Look out for the huge selection of kitchen storage at Asda. Put spices in a deep drawer and label the caps so you don’t have to root around each time you need them. Pots, jars and tins Use old glass jars and rattan pots in the bathroom or bedroom for cotton wool and cotton buds, make-up brushes, nail varnish and other beauty paraphernalia. Don’t forget tins – old biscuit tins, for example, can be perfect for storing things such as stationery supplies, sewing kits, shoe polish and buttons. If your tins are decorative, show them off. All wrapped up If you’ve got a drawer that’s full of junk, empty it and use to store rolls of wrapping paper. This will keep your paper in pristine condition and you’ll be able to see which one you want in seconds. Kitchen drawer divider Use an old kitchen drawer divider or cutlery tray to stash stationery, till receipts, jewellery and all your odds and ends. It’ll make everything so easy to find. Charity box Keep a box or crate in your garage, shed or under the stairs and put all your unwanted items into it. When it’s full, pop along to your local charity shop and donate the contents. Baskets They come in so many shapes, sizes, colours and styles that you’re bound to find a basket just right for all your storage needs. See our great range at ASDA.com/ direct, which includes this canvas tote storage basket, £4 (right).

The North York Moors
Dramatic landscapes, seaside towns, plus fantastic fish and chips! – this region has plenty to explore
The timeless charm of the North York Moors won’t be lost on fans of TV’s Heartbeat, as the popular 1960s period drama was filmed in the region’s stunning countryside. The wild, windswept moors are wonderfully dramatic, with the high moorland plateau covered with a vast expanse of heather that turns a glorious purple e in late summer. Marked by ancient crosses and grazing sheep, it’s a flat landscape with few buildings, roads or trees, but its open, exposed setting gives it an incredible sense of space.
Magnificent cliffs The stark beauty of the moor contrasts with the fertile valleys below. Here a network of grassy dales shelter wildlife-rich woodlands, green fields, rivers and streams. Picturesque villages such as Grosmont, Hutton-le-Hole and Lealholm are scattered throughout the rolling countryside, and you’ll find reminders of the region’s past everywhere, from old ironstone kilns and mines to stately homes, medieval castles and atmospheric ruined abbeys. The moors meet the sea along the North Yorkshire coast – a magnificent stretch of

sheer cliffs, sheltered bays and sandy beaches. Tiny fishing villages, such as Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay, wind down steep ravines to the water, while the larger coastal resorts of Whitby and Scarborough are blessed with long stretches of golden sand and an all the other ingredients for a traditional trad seaside day out.
Forest trails Fo With more than 1,400 miles of paths and tracks crossing the moors, valleys and coast, th walkers are spoilt for choice, wa from leisurely strolls along disused railway tracks tra to deep forest trails through gorges and exhilarating cliff-top pathways. Mountain biking, horse riding and watersports are also popular, and less energetic pursuits include bird watching, fishing and scenic drives. Whichever way you to decide to explore the region, there are plenty of places to sample some Northern hospitality along the way. Pop into a traditional tearoom for a cuppa and home-made cake or visit a cosy country pub for a pint of locally brewed real ale and a roast dinner – complete with Yorkshire pudding!

CINEMA LES MISÉRABLES
Adapted from the smash-hit stage musical, Les Misérables tells the story of ex-prisoner Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) as he’s hunted down by the ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crowe, above) after breaking his parole. When he meets factory worker Fantine (Anne Hathaway) and her young daughter Cosette (Amanda Seyfried, inset), their lives change forever. Their story is set against revolution and tragedy in 19th-century France. In cinemas 11 January. HISTORICAL FICTION
THRILLER
CHILDREN’S
It’s the year 1453 and 17-year-old Luca is accused of heresy and cast out of his religious order. He’s recruited into a secret sect to catalogue The End of Days – that is, paranormal happenings across Europe.
A poor student in New York finds a bag of diamonds during an attack at Grand Central Station. Plans for a worry-free life with his girlfriend fill his thoughts – until he realises he’s being hunted, and that whoever is after him won’t stop until they’ve reclaimed the diamonds and exacted revenge…
Twenty years after it was originally published, this classic tale of a little old lady, a wise old man and a chaotic collection of larderraiding, curtain-chewing, jig-dancing animals is as fresh and funny as ever. This limited edition also has early drawings from illustrator Axel Scheffler.
