oconuts—also known as Cocos nucifera— have been around since the fifth century. They once held bad reputation in the health community, but thanks to recent studies, this fruit/nut/seed is now considered a miracle food. People consume coconuts in a variety of ways—raw coconut, coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut butter, coconut water—and the list goes on. The health benefits are just as numerous.
Coconuts can help boost your energy levels, as it helps burn fat in the body. Furthermore, the soft meat, or flesh, inside the coconut helps to restore oxidative tissue damage and contains a source of healthy fats, proteins, and various vitamins and minerals. Studies claim that coconut water is a great post-workout drink due to it being low in calories, carbohydrates, and sugars, and high in B vitamins and proteins.
Supports Immune System Research has also shown that coconuts help our immune system. Coconuts contain a lipid called lauric acid, which many researchers believe supports the immune system. Consuming coconuts in any of its forms can help build up the body’s resistance to several types of bacteria and viruses. They are also recommended in treatment for diseases such as bronchitis and throat infections.

Coconuts are a great source of digestion-friendly and satiating fiber. It can provide over 60% of fiber that your body needs daily. The fiber from coconuts also slows down glucose release, which can reduce hunger. Apart from fiber, coconuts also contain vitamin B6, iron, and minerals like magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium.
By eating coconuts regularly, you can improve the health of your bones and teeth. This is because, coconut boosts the body's ability to absorb manganese and calcium. Both these minerals are required by the body to build healthy bones and teeth. Furthermore, coconuts’ health benefits aren’t exclusively gained through consumption. Many people are using it for cosmetic purposes and to improve the health and appearance of their skin and hair. Studies on individuals with dry skin show that coconut oil can improve the moisture content of the skin and protect against hair damage. It can also reduce symptoms of eczema.

KEVIN WILLIAMS
Helping to Empower Local Businesses with Technological Innovations
A
St. Lucian technology company is opening new frontiers in security and asset management designed to help Caribbean companies enhance their operational processes and reduce the cost of doing business. Established in 2016, Simply Innovative Solutions was founded by Kevin Williams. The company has partnered with 1st Choice Security Solutions, Inc., and Virtual Doxx, two leading U.S. RFID technology companies. Virtual Doxx provides patented RFID tracking and management solutions to local, state and federal governments in the U.S., the U.S Air Force and numerous global corporations and intergovernmental agencies, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Canadian court system, Coca-Cola, Apple Computer, Lockheed Martin, Bank United and Johns Hopkins. By partnering with the two companies, Simply Innovative Solutions is able to offer businesses in St. Lucia and the wider region affordable access to state-of-the-art RFID-enabled asset tracking systems and automated database management solutions suitable for a broad range of industries. Williams’ company was thrust into the limelight after he became a finalist in ‘Get in the Ring’, a global competition that showcases the innovation and economic viability of business start-ups by talented young, upand-coming entrepreneurs from around the world. The St. Lucia leg of the competition

was hosted earlier this year by Chamber of Commerce affiliates, Saint Lucia Junior Achievement and the Saint Lucia Youth Business Trust. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracking systems help to substantially reduce the time employees spend managing thousands of files that accumulate in a workplace over time. Each file is scanned into the system and given an RFID label tag encoded with a unique ID number associated with contents of the file. The software enables the user to locate that file by inputting its unique ID number into an RFID handheld reader. The technology is used for automated management and tracking of documents, consumer products, vehicles and a host of other items. Additionally, a number of disaster relief organizations around the world use the systems for the deployment of search and rescue operations, emergency logistics and the transfer of injured and trapped victims. “Through our partnership with Virtual Doxx and 1st Choice Security Solutions Inc. Simply innovative Solutions has become their official representative in the region,” says Williams. “They provide the RFID technologies that we offer and when they come over to install the systems, we help them with the installation and the training, as well as the software design for the client.” Williams’ company recently signed a major deal with the Grenada Ports Authority for the installation of a bus terminal RFID tracking system for the Port of St. George's. “Since implementing that system at the bus terminal in St. George’s, they have come back to us so that we can install the same system at another one of Grenada’s ports,” says Williams. His company is currently in negotiations with two local state-owned entities for the installation of a vehicle tracking system for their fleets.
simply checking the system. There are other options, for example if you just need the application to ping at certain points to periodically check on your vehicles,” Williams explained. The system can also help to curb vehicle theft, he added. “Presently the rate of vehicle theft in St. Lucia is at an all-time high. The thieves have no hesitation stripping your vehicle right in front of your home or business place and you wouldn’t know it until you woke up the next morning and see just the shell. That’s where our system comes into play because anybody who tries to tamper with a vehicle on the system, you would immediately get a notification alerting you. We can provide the customer with an app that you can download to your phone to receive these notifications,” says Williams. Simply Innovative Solutions also offers companies the added benefits of storing their data in cloudbased servers to ensure maximum security and confidentiality. “In addition, every system that we install, we ensure that we sign a confidentiality agreement with the client so that they know their information will not be accessed or compromised by any outside party. “We offer free consultations and work with our customers to determine exactly what they need. We give them the sort of system we believe will work for them. It doesn’t make any sense to us whatsoever to offer one generic system when that system isn’t for everyone. We just don’t believe this is the right way to go. And we’re flexible with our pricing. We work with a client to bring the costs down and in doing so we don’t diminish the quality of the system we offer. Our job is to ensure that our clients get the best system for the price that they can afford. That is our primary goal.”
Their RFID system not only allows companies to track their vehicles in real time, it can also help them improve employee accountability and monitor products through the entire supply chain.
St. Lucian chartered accountant, Ivan Augustin and his wife Jennifer Leid Augustin, a sales management executive, are Williams’ business advisors. He is full of praise for them and credits them with helping to set the business on a firm footing and making it a company that is one hundred percent customerfocussed.
“We install the devices on the vehicles. They can be tracked in real time by simply logging into the system and clicking on the registration number of that vehicle to see exactly where it is. If the driver has an unauthorised person driving the vehicle, for example a friend or a spouse, you can detect this by

Callbacks in the Working World
I
n many walks of life, it’s common for professionals to find work in their fields based on ‘who they know’. While that is true for the most part, there’s also the fact that you simply must be easy to work with. You could know everyone in the industry, and everyone can know you but what makes people want to collaborate with you is your attitude on the job as a professional. So where do you start? If the saying ‘time is money’ holds true, then PUNCTUALITY is up first. In any industry, being committed to being on time and keeping your word is a lot more valuable than you might think. Making a habit out of showing up late does more harm than good and in some cases the effects may be irreversible. As an example, if you’re part of a team that needs to shoot an interview with the CEO of a big company, there’s no room for late arrivals and retakes. But, if you make it your business to be on time and get things rolling early, it’ll help you get your work done more efficiently as well as improve your chances on getting called back for the next gig.
12 DAZZLE

The next point worth highlighting is KNOWING YOUR JOB. It’s all good when you can do your assigned tasks with ease and a knowledge of how everything that you do works. However, issues may arise when you attempt to step out of your zone and tell everyone else how they should do their job. Making suggestions should be accepted and probably even greatly appreciated… but there’s a fine line between giving useful pointers and dictating the details with others on your team. The third and final one is BE READY TO LEARN. In collaborative projects there’s always something to learn, whether it’s about what you’re doing or about something else you might be interested in. Being open to learning and growing while working with others is not only beneficial for you, but it also shows that you’re driven by growth. And that in itself, is something that everyone favours in people that they work with.

great rum is the product of a great distillery. St. Lucia Distillers Group of Companies, whose rums have gained recognition on both regional and international stages, is a perfect example of this.
A
thing for survival was to combine the two,” explained Sergin Joseph, Marketing Manager at the distillery. “So, St. Lucia Distillers Group of Companies was born, and the very first product that was made was actually Denros Bounty Rum.”
St. Lucia Distillers Group of Companies is the sole rum distillery in St. Lucia, located in the agriculturally rich valley of Roseau. Established in 1972, the company was born out of the merger of Geese and the Barnard family. “Geese and the Barnard Family were actually the two main sugar distilleries on island and with the advent of bananas coming into play, the most logical
Fast forward to present day, and St. Lucia Distillers Group of Distillers has a variety of rums and rum related products, including local favourites such as the Bounty Rum brand and the Chairman’s Reserve brand as well as liqueurs such as Marigot Bay, and Ti Tasse. They also import several wines and spirits through their distribution branch, Barbay Limited.

Despite the intense competition on the international market, St. Lucia Distillers Group of Distillers and its products have thrived. “St.Lucia Distillers is very unique in the way we actually make rum. We use a combination of pot and column still rums which is then placed to age in various age statements. We’re able to play with flavours and different age statements to come up with those award-winning products,” explained Ms. Joseph. Over its 47-year lifespan, the company has received over 150 medals and commendations. Their continued success can also be attributed to the commitment and teamwork of its staff. “The working environment at St. Lucia Distillers is one that is fun and allows the various persons working there to be a part of history for St. Lucia with the brands we produce,” added Ms. Joseph. “We’re like a family, working together to produce various rum brands that are revered and admired around the world.”
Furthermore, the company shows no signs of complacency. “St. Lucia Distillers since being bought over has actually had quite a bit of financial injection made in the business to be able to expand; to better market our brands and solidify some of our brands in the international market,” elaborates Ms. Joseph. “We’ve also had some collaborations that show the connection to St. Lucia in terms of our history. Our Admiral Rodney Brand has just been relaunched with a product of three, and Admiral Rodney is synonymous with St. Lucia. We actually named our three ranges within the brand after the three ships that actually broke the line of the Battle of the Saints by Admiral Rodney: Admiral Rodney Formidable, Admiral Rodney Princessa, and Admiral Rodney Royal Oak.” It’s safe to say that we can expect even more great rum products from St. Lucia Distillers Group of Companies in the future.

Telling HER Story
M
aya Angelou once said, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” It is a sentiment that many women can relate to. However, now women are creating platforms and spaces to voice their stories and to empower one another. One such example is the HERstoire Collective. Dazzle Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with HERstoire’s Founding Director, Dr. Robyn Charlery White to talk about HERstoire’s story and its mission of women empowerment in the region.
16 DAZZLE
www.dazzlethemag.com
Dazzle: Can you tell us what HERstoire is all about? Robyn: HERstoire in a nutshell, is about promoting Caribbean women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). That’s in a nutshell. Of course, there are a lot of other issues that we address; gender dynamics and gendered power norms in relationships, especially in the Caribbean. We open the door to discussing many topics such as dissecting feminist issues and unearthing the myths and taboos about feminism that it is not a dirty word, and it doesn’t mean that you hate men.
with privately, through my consulting practice, and immediately they were like “This is an awesome idea! We want you to conduct these facilitations and workshops at the United Nations and other places.” As a result, HERstoire took a life of its own before I even had time to bring it to Saint Lucia. Eventually, I finally got to Saint Lucia in September of that same year, in 2016. We immediately started conducting workshops, programs and events and we had our unofficial launch so to speak, as the first Vision Box Party in Saint Lucia on January 2nd, 2017.
Dazzle: What inspired you to start HERstoire? Robyn: The final impetus into starting HERstoire was the research I was conducting in Saint Lucia for my dissertation in 2015. The goal of my research was to determine how Caribbean women or St. Lucian women perceive their risk of contracting HIV, whether it be through their partners, through giving blood or whatever the risk may be. What ended up happening however, was that there were so many issues presented and discussed in those interviews about gender power dynamics and issues in relationships. Things that women were faced with and accepting in relationships, and had challenges with but didn’t necessarily know how to explain why that was an issue for them. So as a result I contemplated how do I make my research and the outcome of my research meet these very real issues in St. Lucia. So HERstoire wouldn’t have been born if I had just stuck with HIV and sexual research.
fun facts
Dazzle: Why the name “HERstoire”? Robyn: For over six months my cofounder and I were deliberating, and all the names we kept coming up with were so literal. What I got drawn to was the French/Patois “L’histoire”, meaning history or story, and I thought of a play on words with “her story”. If you Google “her story”, you’ll see that there are over a million organisations, movements and websites already but there’s only one HERstoire. When people hear HERstoire, they think “Oh that’s French or something. What exactly does it mean?” So, it is a great talking point. It actually represents H – Health Education, E – Empowerment, R – Research and Stoire – Stories. Dazzle: When did HERstoire launch? Robyn: January 2nd, 2016 was when we finally finalized the name, and therefore we consider this our “birthday”. At the time of HERstoire’s conception I was in New York, so we didn’t get started off in Saint Lucia. Since we are primarily focused on digital advocacy, we started off then on social media (Instagram and Facebook), by addressing the various SRHR topics and taboos that we are unearthing. I liaised with a number of organizations that I was already working

But I’m more likely to do scubadiving Favourite quote? “When the whole world is silent, even one voice is powerful”. Dazzle: What are some programmes HERstoire has undertaken? Robyn: We designed the “HERFleur: Let’s Talk. Period” program – where we educate secondary school girls about menstruation, hygiene and reduce period poverty by providing menstrual care supplies. We initially felt that the curriculum was so amazing and ground-breaking. I mean we planned to have these discussions about the sexualization of girls once they start menstruating, consumerism of menstrual supplies, etc. - the idea was to dive deeper into menstrual issues than the basics. However, when we got in the first few schools we realized many of these girls didn’t even know what menstruation or their period was. At their level, their priorities were learning how to keep themselves clean, how often should they be changing their pads, how to buy pads, how to even use pads, etc. So, we recognized the curriculum was off target and we had to take it back to the drawing board. I also had to do a different training of volunteers, to make them more brazen and brash because you can’t be shy when talking about these issues, and you also can’t be too academic. Another program we implemented was the Sister2Sister Safe Space Program, which has since been considered as a Best Practice by the OECS. That was a primarily virtual program where we facilitated

online chats every other week on our website (from March-November 2017). Each chat lasted two hours, and it was hosted on a plethora of hot topics ranging endometriosis, PCOS, sexual violence, mental health and a wide range of other SRHR issues that affect women. We also have our Vision Box Party annually. This program focuses on manifesting your visions, making it a reality and helping you with planning and goal setting. Dazzle: Compared to when you started off and now, has there been greater attention placed on the issues that HERstoire addresses? Robyn: Oh yes, definitely. Between the time we’ve started and now, I can point out a bunch of movements that we either collaborated with or capitalized on as well to help promote our platform, starting with Fiona Compton’s “Not Asking for It” Movement; which was one of our very first collaborations. After that was “Life in Leggings”, which was founded by Ronelle King, in Barbados. This massive movement was started to draw attention to sexual harassment and street harassment, specifically in the Caribbean. This year alone, I’d say HERstoire has been invited to at least four convenings addressing the intersections of women and gender issues in the Caribbean, which surprised me. We’ve also been increasingly invited to speak to women and youth on SRHR topics. All that proves is that the conversations are happening, people are paying attention to these issues, and I do think we are changing society. Dazzle: What are HERstoire’s future plans? Robyn: Our immediate future plans are to take the “HERFleur: Let’s Talk. Period” program to the next level which is teaching the ladies to make their own reusable pads. We’ve already successfully piloted this program and we intend to offer it in the schools as an afterschool program as well as in communities and organisations. After this, we’re bringing back the Sister2Sister Safe Space Virtual Program! For this one, however, we intend to have more visual aids as people are very visual learners, and they’d like to see the facilitators or enhance interaction on some level. With the Sister2Sister Safe Space Virtual Program, it’s not going to be just for Saint Lucians, it’s going to be accessible wherever in the world you are. HERstoire is really for Caribbean women in the diaspora, so it’s a space where we don’t want other Caribbean women to think that this is only for Saint Lucians. We want all Caribbean women, no matter where you are, to know that you have a safe space at HERstoire! We wish Dr. Charlery White and HERstoire all the best in their future endeavours. 18 DAZZLE

Understanding Snapchat Marketing: Is it Right For You?
I
f you’re not a millennial, then Snapchat probably seems like a huge waste of time. However, more and more businesses are taking interest in this platform as a marketing medium. Although Snapchat is still trailing behind the other platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, the social network does present unique marketing opportunities. So, in this article, we’re going to explore the different aspects of Snapchat marketing, so that you can see if Snapchat is the right platform for your business.
The Audience is Young The first thing you need to know is; Snapchat marketing is NOT for everyone. Currently, the social media platform has about 188 million active users, with most of those users ranging from ages 12-34. So, if your goal is to reach a younger audience, Snapchat is great. If not? Then your time and money would be better invested in other social media networks. 20 DAZZLE
www.dazzlethemag.com
Content should be fun and relevant
Promoting your Snapchat account with other social networks
Snapchat is meant to be fun and engaging, so that needs to be reflected in the content you post. Examples of things you can do include behind the scenes clips, exclusive videos/image content, contests, product previews and promotions. You can also have customers send in videos of them using your products so it can be featured on the account. This is very costeffective because it does not require any advertising expenses; all you need is your smartphone!
Ironically, for your Snapchat strategy to be effective, you’ll need to promote it on other social networks. Due to Snapchat’s layout, gaining followers solely through the platform is difficult. So, by promoting your Snapchat content on your other social media pages, you build your Snapchat following as well as provide extra content for your other accounts.
Call to Action
Consistency is Key
As with any social media platform, you should always give your audience a call to action. This is when you prompt your followers to do something, e.g. “Call us today at‌â€? Since Snapchat doesn’t have bios like Facebook or Instagram, you’ll have to include your contact info in your stories. You can also include links in your stories. Users can get access to the link if they follow the prompt at the bottom of your story to “swipe up.â€? This is a great way to get traffic to your website.
Snapchat can be described as a “live in the moment platform. Content posted only lasts for 24 hours and is then automatically deleted. Therefore, businesses must post new content daily to stay active and relevant. However, do not go overboard (posting 20 times in one day isn’t effective). Keeping the account active can be difficult, especially for businesses where workers aren’t tech savvy or there is not a designated staff member to manage social media.

“
W
ho am I?” It’s a question that everyone who goes through life will find themselves asking at one point or another. It’s hardly ever an easy answer, and all who dare to ask can expect to find themselves on a lifelong journey of discovery and growth. For Karlyn Percil, founder of KDPM Consulting INC; finding herself and improving who she is, is what her journey is all about, but we start with the question…
Who is Karlyn Percil? Karlyn is a woman who’s determined to die empty, to discover and use every single talent that she has been given. Another piece of Karlyn is a young girl who grew up in the heart of Banse, Laborie, doing homework under candlelight, walking an hour to catch a bus to go to school, bathing in the river in the morning, cleaning mud off of her shoes, that’s also Karlyn. I am also the girl who has successfully built a career for herself. I’ve had 23 years of experience in the financial industry. I started my career in St. Lucia at Scotiabank as a teller, eventually I worked my way up and decided that I wanted more so I moved to Toronto, Canada.
Describe your experience leaving home and going into this whole new world being employed in Canada as a St. Lucian? I applied for a job in the analytics department at Scotiabank because the head office is also in Toronto. When I moved there it wasn’t easy because you don’t notice how different you are until you get there. The roles that you get are entry level, and when you look to your higher ups there isn’t anyone there who looks like you that you can relate to. I worked my way up and different opportunities allowed me to have more face to face interaction with people to develop staff training techniques and so on, that’s kind of where I found my sweet spot for what it is that I wanted to do.
Giving You The Tools To Create Your Own Legacy When did you decide that it was time to start a mentorship company that would guide others to create their own destiny? On the quest of trying to find fulfilment for myself I’d watch TED talks, read motivational books and take example from my possibility models and the success rituals that they practiced. When I noticed how much of an impact that it was having on my lifestyle and my growth, I decided to share that with others. I’d do small group meets, one on ones… while this was going on. I went back to school to obtain my Master’s Certificate in Adult training and personal development. Thereafter I earned additional certifications. I did think about making a living off of that at the time, but I was a bit scared and unsure… until I met Claudette McGowan. I remember telling her that I felt like it’s time for me to get up from the table. Then she asked, ‘why are you waiting? why haven’t you started your own business already?’ I didn’t really have an answer, so I asked myself, why not? That’s when I started taking a closer look at what my company’s structure would be. I wanted to empower more lives and help more people.

leverage it for greater success in your relationships and also in social settings. We recently launched Elephant Stories Leadership Program - designed to help leaders address the “Elephant” in their Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.
To what do you attribute your success? I attribute my success to what I call my three P’s; Perseverance, Prayer and Purpose. Perseverance because that always keeps me coming back even after I get knocked down or I’m tested to trust myself and my destiny. Prayer, God, having a connection with a higher power, the universe, that’s another one. That’s how I trust my intuition. And purpose… because there’s a purpose to everything that I do, everything that I go through. My belief is that I go through it so that I can grow through it and be of service to humankind, especially women and girls.
What has it been like coming back home and contributing in different ways? I’ve seen the potential of so many amazing young women who I’ve worked with over the years. So, I came back home to remind women that they have agency and that everything they need, is already all within them, it’s just a matter of developing the ability to tap into that. In this day and age, we have access to so much more so there really is no excuse. I’m here to give them the tools to be their biggest cheerleader. The practices, tips and success rituals that I’ve learned and practiced for the past ten years, I have packaged it and called it the Success Planner. The name was inspired by Napoleon Hill. He’s one of my biggest teachers and the author of the book “Think and Grow Rich”. In it he says that whatever the mind can conceive it can achieve and that’s something that I live by.
What is your biggest achievement so far? In addition to self- love & self- acceptance - It’s between getting on Oprah Winfrey’s Show and getting chosen as a keynote speaker in 2018 for Mandela 100; Giants of Africa. Being asked to be one of the speakers on Mandela’s 100th birthday, who is one of my biggest idols, was a humbling experience. The third biggest achievement I’d say is me creating a self-love practice that allowed me to find my way back to being Karlyn. I’m really proud of that and without the foundation of self-confidence anything and anyone can knock you off of your path. But if you have the practice of replenishing yourself, no matter what you go through 24 DAZZLE

or what happens, it means that tomorrow you can get back up again and keep going. Achievements are equal to ones growth. Right now we’re launching AmplifyHer2020 - a campaign highlighting the stories, voices and skills of Black, Indigenous and non-Black Women of color. Stay tuned for more.
How did you get that opportunity to be on the Oprah Winfrey Network? A call within me said that this was the right time for me to talk about my elephant story of child sexual abuse. I know that there are so many young girls in the Caribbean who are struggling with the same thing. For me, it’s so important to speak up and to give a voice to the voiceless. It just so happened that OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) Canada was doing a show called “Life Story Project” and the producers were looking for stories. And because I was going through my self-discovery, I asked myself “why aren’t you raising your hand to be chosen?”. So at that time I decided to share my story and the universe aligned and the producers said yes.
What is your greatest failure and what did you learn from it? The way I see it, failures are just lessons on your journey to success. So my biggest failure, I would say is self-betrayal - not believing in myself enough to
• • • • •
get started on my dreams. I believed that my past disqualified from a life I love. What I learned from that experience was that you can still take action and be brave even if you’re afraid.
What piece of advice can you give young individuals who are looking for their purpose? The advice I would give is to stop looking and start paying attention to it, because you’re actually living your purpose. Our purpose lies in the effective use of our talents and skills and the creativity and ideas that we have. We are always on purpose. So even if you’re in a place where you’re not satisfied or you’re upset, that is part of your purpose, so the question is what are you going to do about this thing that you’re not satisfied with? How are you going to utilize that in terms of your living experience? Remember that last time where you said “someone should really try this or do something about that” take that thought and ask yourself what’s one step you can take to make that a reality. And always remember that your gift and your purpose is next to your pain. With everything that Karlyn is getting up to, we wish her all the best in reaching even more of her goals in the near future!

The Perfectionists Pretty Little Liars;
I
f you’ve watched Pretty Little Liars, then you’ll appreciate its spin-off--Pretty Little Liars; The Perfectionists. Never wanting to leave a mystery unsolved, we followed Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) and Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish) from the notorious Rosewood, to the perfect town of Beacon Heights. They’ve both tried to leave the craziness of their hometown behind them and start fresh at Beacon Heights University; where being anything short of exceptional is unacceptable. The Perfectionists and Pretty Little Liars have a lot in common, as is expected of originals and their spinoffs. By now, we’ve all become accustomed to the stalker-serial killer theme that the series bases its story upon. The Perfectionists’ fate is just as eerie and equally as thrilling. It’s not a necessity to watch Pretty Little Liars first, since so far, the show seems to have a plot outside of the liars’ drama, but there are certain scenes where the little town of Rosewood is mentioned that might confuse you if you’re not a Pretty Little Liars fan. In this spin-off, three college students have their notso perfect lives completely derailed and scrutinized when the leader of their group is murdered and naturally, they’re the main suspects. Ava Jalali, (Sofia
Carson), Caitlin Park-Lewis (Sydney Park) and Dylan Walker (Eli Brown) are Beacon Heights University’s overachievers, but surely being so perfect all the time has its side effects. They each have their own secrets to keep locked away, some more pressing than others but they’re all under the same pressure. Who’s keeping their secrets hostage? We’ve played this game before. Yet somehow the mature turn that the show has taken makes me want to watch it even more. The main cast is older, hopefully wiser, and they’ve got quite the experienced council. How can there be a spin-off, without continuing the stories of our original anti-heroes, Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal? Towards the end of Pretty Little Liars, the time jump helped us to see at least one our protagonists grow from a juvenile delinquent to a mature young woman. We’ve seen Alison move from the teenage bully, to a working mother but we’ve appreciated that Mona has stayed true to her creepy, secretive ways. Obviously, some things never change. But moving from Rosewood was supposed to be their new start, and they’ve unknowingly inserted themselves into another game where they don’t hold all the cards. It’s Rosewood, 2.0

hey’re blowing up the music scene in Saint Lucia, and I’m sure you’ve heard of them. Lu City; made up of Jean Atem and Ryie, are not so new, but still making a name for themselves in the music industry. They were more than generous in sharing with us their experiences so far as a group. They were not always a singing duo. Both Ryie and Jean Atem first started off singing and rapping as individuals before they encountered each other through a mutual friend. They appeared on stage as Jean Atem and Ryie, before being convinced by Machel Montano to form a group. Lu City came about shortly after, derived from their own colloquial term used to refer to Saint Lucia. Jean Atem shared that he started off rapping, but along the way taught himself how to sing. Ryie began singing at the young age of 7, and continued his talents throughout school. They’ve had some popular songs since their union; Let it Go with Machel Montano, Sa Ka Fête with Barbadian singer Shontelle and Starting Over with Reekado Banks to name a few. Among the numerous songs and success, Lu City praised their team as one of their biggest accomplishments as a group. “One of our biggest accomplishments is getting our team together. We have the perfect team right now and everyone plays an extremely unique and important part. We don’t have any worries because our team is doing what they need to do.” Jean Atem expressed his feelings about working with his counterpart, Ryie. “He’s awesome. He’s my complete opposite. His melodies and his structure are different so when we come together it just works. Music and personality wise, we click.” The duo shared their amazing experience with Machel Montano at his ‘Machel Monday’ concert in Jamaica. “We’ve worked under pressure before, so it was great!” And shared that it was always a trip to change their music career. “We had to come up with our best songs in like under three hours. We had a limited time for everything, but we loved it.” They met their current producer, Shaquille Delete who’s been an incredible asset to their team, during their trip. “We ended meeting this guy and he just became a big part of our production. He makes all our beats and ensure
Like all career challenges, the music business is not without its own. “People that tell you, you can’t sound the way you want to, it’s one of the few challenges we’ve faced. Terrible engineering, I’d say. They try to stop us from sounding the way we should, and we’ve risen above that.” Jean Atem added. “And in terms of competition, you have to believe that no one’s your competition. That everyone’s there doing what they’re supposed to do. You have to believe that you have the strongest hold.” Acquiring a fan base wasn’t easy, especially being new among already established musicians. “It wasn’t easy, but we’re thankful for the fans that we have. We’re thankful that they like our music and our sound...we appreciate them.” And people do...love their music. There are only a few R&B Caribbean singers in Saint Lucia so they’ve come to be a fan favourite. But even when there’s so much going on, it’s difficult to keep the momentum going in difficult times. “My biggest motivation is that I’m never satisfied. It’s what keeps me going. I always need to do something better.” As of June 2019, they’re currently working on new music to release and we’re excited to see how far they can go in the future. They also teased us with the prospect of an upcoming EP! Dazzle Magazine wishes Lu City all the best.

A Buying Guide for Memory Cards
M
uch like a hammer for a carpenter; if you’re a video shooter or photographer, you would know how essential memory cards are to your craft. They’re those pieces of gear that often go overlooked just because of how basic they are. You put it in your camera and almost forget about it till it’s time to transfer all the footage you’ve shot. For something this important, you’d want to make sure that it works reliably and consistently. But sometimes it doesn’t. Some of us have been plagued with memory card failures, lost footage, capacities that are too small for what we’re shooting, or even too slow to process what the camera is recording. None of which are good, especially if you do professional work in that field. Read on below for a few things you should keep an eye out for when shopping for memory cards.
Speed Read & Write speeds are just as important in SD cards as they are in hard drives. Assuming that you’re shooting at least 1080p video at 24 or 30fps: a card classed as V30, UHS-I and with a read speed of 95 MB/s will be much more than capable for your needs. And if you decide to shoot in 4K at 100mbps these cards will be fine as well. 30 DAZZLE
www.dazzlethemag.com
Capacity Opinions will vary widely when it comes to what capacity you should get. Some will swear by buying one huge capacity SD card and use it solely. On the other hand, some prefer multiple small capacity cards to shoot on with the others being used as backups in case one card crashes. Which route you decide to take is up to you. But as with anything else, knowing your needs should come before making a decision. If you plan on shooting lengthy conference meetings, weddings and the like, larger cards would be the way to go… having multiple wouldn’t be a bad idea either. If you’re shooting a few short clips to put together a highlight reel, you may not want to invest in one 256GB card.
Brand Not every memory card is created equal despite having similar sizes, speeds and more. Some SD card brands have developed a reputation for being reliable, which is what you want. Brand names like SanDisk, Lexmark, Lexar and Angelbird are a few of those that you should look out for. Other brands like Transcend or Sony aren’t bad but they’re not as popular, so therefore their reliability may still be in question. Carrying out more research on what your camera needs in a memory card is advised too, but for now, these are the basics to get you started.
