DB3 took on the role of the Lead Design Organisation (LDO) on behalf of Taylor Woodrow for the ambitious Colchester Depot Upgrades project, aimed at improving the Greater Anglia Rail. The nature of the site demanded meticulous coordination and attention to detail throughout the project.

One of DB3’s primary tasks was the implementation of GRP walkways. These walkways provide essential access to trains for the cleaning staff, ensuring a clean and well-maintained fleet. Moreover, they were designed to facilitate sanding carts, an important aspect of the trains’ operational requirements. Due to the site’s high voltage electricity, special precautions were taken to minimise risks. While working with Taylor Woodrow, Greater Anglia, and Network Rail, DB3 implemented and coordinated the GRP solution to reduce the potential for electrical arcing.

Another critical aspect of the project involved relocating the CET and water connections. The relocation process required precise planning and execution to ensure minimal disruption to operations while achieving the desired outcomes.

The walkways and infrastructure implemented by DB3 were designed to be permanent fixtures at the depot. This long-term vision required careful consideration and adherence to stringent safety standards. In particular, DB3 worked closely with the contractor and structural engineers to ensure that the design met Network Rail standards, ensuring the highest level of safety and compliance.
