uga memorial garden. the uga memorial garden lies at the heart of campus, adjacent to the student learning center. circulation is a top priority in keeping the main walkway through the site. the garden area is a popular gathering place for students to study, eat & socialize between classes. the site, as it exists, is exposed & hot during the warmer months. a large shaded ‘reflecting lawn’ is proposed for students to relax between class & reflect on the sacrifices military service members have made. etched glass panes will depict quotes of peace & remembrance. on the opposing side is a large, spiraling, interactive, amphitheater style fountain. in the bottom center is a 6’ diameter black granite globe floating on water. war is often a global event with various countries having allies, giving humanitarian aid, or the trade of goods & services; everyone is affected. people can roll the globe and hopefully realize how close we all are. a seating area with tables overlooks the fountain. a master plan, grading plan, staking plans, planting plan, multiple construction details, & even a short specification form were required for this project. mediums: autoCAD base maps hand traced, photoshop rendering.

brunelli residence. located on lake hartwell of the ga/sc border, this 5.5 acre site has over fifty feet of elevation change from front to back. program requirements are to site the house, a boat garage, a firing range, lawn games area, children’s play area, cutting & vegetable gardens, patio/entertaining area, fire place & grill/bar, pool & hot tub, reforestation for privacy, & sustainable re-use of water. the entrance to the brunelli residence provides an aura of intimacy as it is surrounded by large trees. the driveway quickly opens, crossing between the large open meadows and allows only a brief glimpse of the house. the boat garage and archery range are nestled in the woods in their own area. the large meadows have been graded to form a gentle swale that will channel the majority of the on-site water around the back of the house to a natural swimming pool for creative & sustainable re-use of water. adjacent to the pool is the hot tub, a large patio area for grilling & entertaining, & an outdoor fireplace/seating area. a vegetable/herb & cutting garden can be found in the same area. a flat lawn area for lawn games is up a flight of steps to the next terrace level on the back of the house. another flight of steps leads back up to the garage where a zipline can be found leading to the children’s treehouse.

uga metropolitan design studio: snapping shoals town center. in lieu of a traditional urban planning curriculum, i volunteered to be one of ten students who entered an urban planning live/ work setting in covington, ga. we worked at the center for community preservation & planning on part of the newton county ‘2050 build-out’ plan. this opportunity provided hands on experience through weekly meetings with public officials from various agencies. further, biweekly charettes were open to the public who evaluated designs & offered critiques. these plans will be used as a foundation to implement their goals in the future. students were tasked with developing conceptual town centers in two of the designated nodes of the build-out plan. development of the most feasible & ideal town centers was completed by the following metrics: site inventory/analysis, studying road systems, cataloging existing retail business, reviewing parcel ownership & meeting with citizens to find historically significant locations. the plan is located at the intersection of highways 81, 212, & snapping shoals road. at the heart of this ‘gateway community’ design sits the community center (a) with outdoor recreational space provided. on the two adjacent corners, mirrored buildings stand as retail & professional office buildings (b) on axis with a pavilion and community garden (c). on the corner opposite of the community center, a plaza with a monument (d) will mark the history of the snapping shoals mill (e). behind the plaza is wooded green space (f) that connects to the town center down to the south river (g) by a trail system (h). a public service building (i) housing fire or police is located at the divergence of snapping shoals rd & hwy 212. the more densely populated residential area, consisting of quadplexes & duplexes (j), lies immediately behind the retail/office buildings (b) with the design concept to create communities with a community. parking is kept behind buildings with alleys. they were designed to be built in phases as growth requires expansion. proposed singlefamily housing (k) will connect existing residential (l) areas to the core.

synergry preserve. it becomes increasingly important to preserve precious green space as communities expand. this 300+ acre site is located in what could be a ‘green belt’ around athens, ga. many low impact & sustainable design features were implemented, including: maintaining naturally occurring pastoral & wooded areas; swaths of mowed & tall grass/wildflowers; & forests extended for connectivity. development is maintained on previously disturbed land & an existing roadway is used. community enhancements include: visitors center with solar panels & green roof for public education; a two stage, interactive bioretention pond receiving water from paved area; a wind turbine; children’s herb & butterfly garden; &, community garden with raised planters & orchard. the visitors center doubles as a research facility for sustainable agricultural practices. recreational activities include: boardwalk for remote control sailboats on schooner lake; observation bird blind on a smaller nearby lake; abundant hiking trails; ziplines for low impact fun through the canopy; disc golf course; & primitive public camping sites. mediums: autoCAD base maps hand traced, hand graphics, & photoshop rendering

dried indian creek greenway & stream restoration. newton county & the city of covington, county seat, are involved in a number of progressive projects, one being they are a member of the atlanta regional council (ARC). the ARC supports the livable communities initiative. the metropolitan design studio of 2007 completed the pace street corridor study which covington has received funding for further study & development. as part of the initial project, the studio indicated that a potential greenway could tie into a bicycle lane on the redeveloped pace street. the ARC requires more detailed plans for connecting the greenway to the bicycle lane as a prerequisite for further funding. the project (my senior terminal project) consists of two parts: a 1.5 mile greenway trail from hwy 278 to washington street & stream bank stabilization & restoration of dried indian creek.

mt. bethel skate park & urban plaza. my internship at cobb county parks, recreation, & cultural affairs included development of a unique public gathering area. the site was an under-utilized 3 acre single baseball field on the corner of a very prominent intersection. the goal was to design a skate park that could double as an urban plaza. existing topography was utilized by building a stair skate feature/main entrance to the park from the corner as it slopes towards the center. a large concrete plaza for street skating with unobtrusive skate features was developed. additionally, a halfpipe was incorporated next to a large existing retaining wall that is to be converted into a ‘graffiti’ mural wall for teens. the picnic pavilion is shaped like a butterfly; it catches all water & funnels it to the back where it spills into a ‘sprayground’ play area. a permeable dimensional flagstone plaza leads to an open lawn area for passive recreation & the 1/4 mile walking path that loops around the park. finally, the parking lot drains to bioswales to help educate the public on the water cycle. mediums: autoCAD base maps hand traced, photoshop rendering, sketch-up

vick residence. program elements required the design & situation of a small guest house. the kitchen is to be large so that it could be used to start a catering business. thought is given for elderly parents who may eventually move in. a grill & table area, hot tub, fire pit, unique children’s play area, small lawn space, herb garden, ‘natural’ plantings, & keeping water on site were also desired. the existing house & topography were greatly considered when locating the guest house. it was built into an existing hill so that second floor access could provide an adult lounging area by a hot tub & fire pit patio. the unique children’s play area can be found here also with climbing boulders, a tree stump log run, balance log, & notched tree ladder. descending the outdoor stairway leads to the grill & table area that is on axis with the windows of the dining room in the main house & the window over the stove in the guest house kitchen. the herb & vegetable garden are in close proximity to both kitchens & the grill. a dry laid flagstone path & set of stairs leads around to the basement & secondary driveway. the path crosses over a dry creek bed that channels water from the upper portion of the property into a small rain garden. the natural plantings area can be found along the path. mediums: autoCAD base maps hand traced, sketchup models hand traced, hand graphics, photoshop rendering.

garden of my own. students were asked to develop a concept for a ‘garden of my own’ & design a space that reinforces that. no constraints. i drew inspiration from my childhood home of upstate new york with summers spent to this day vacationing in both the adirondacks & new hampshire. this fictitious site is gently rolling & is approximately the size of a football field. a rocky stream babbles over small cascades & winds through a forest before ending in a small pond. the focal point of the site is a hammock between two white paper birch trees adjacent the pond. the field is a natural setting of tall grasses & wildflowers. mediums: autoCAD base maps hand traced, sketch-up models hand traced, photoshop rendering
