DYANA BERTHAUD ARCH 401 - DESIGN VI PROF. JANET FINK SPRING 2012
SITE ANALYSIS The site is located along Spring Street between Washington Street and West Highway in Hudson Square, which is lower west Manhattan. The UPS building was extend to meet the northern side of our site which created a 60’0” wall against our site.

The cells within the roof have particular functions. There are cells for ventalation, there are cells for light, and there are cells for buffering sound. There are 9 splayed columns that hold up the roof. The columns span about 65’0’ which allows for vast space for dining and seating. The honeycomb roof, along with the splayed columns creates a spacious and functional space.

POOL CONNECTS PROGRAM PROGRAM
Breaking down the site and figuring out what zones needed or did not to be responded helped develop what part of the building will be placed. The various study models are responding to site while organizing the program.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES Through sun analysis and site analysis, there is a understand of how the environment will effect the design. Environmental strategies to respond to the changing seasons of New York City had to be devised. The greenhouse which shares interior space with the pool, is placed on the Western side of the building to better absorb sunlight and heat all year round and shade the pool from the hot summer sun.

STRUCTURE
Basic steel construction was used for the programmatic side of the building. Around the pool and greenhouse, long span structure was place. Seven foot trusses that span about 80 feet are placed over the pool. It creates a space of its own, while allowing views from West Highway and all the interior circulation spaces.

FACADE TRANSLUCENT
CLEAR
The facade became it s own moment. By finding a common number, 16, and using its square root, 4, to create a module gave to an even further breakdown. Choosing particular windows for views and light created an interesting pattern. To respond to views and light, a gradient of opaque with concrete panels, tranluscent with frosted glass, and clear with common glass, concieved a gradual solid to clear gradient around the building with squares that are utilised for windows which may appear random, but its not.

HUDSON NATATORIUM Placing the complete design into the site shows how the Natatorium stands out from the nieghborhood and responds to the site. These renderings show how it would fit into the site if it were to be built.
