Editor’s Note: The Garden’s Annual Report is usually a printed publication that coincides with the Annual Members Meeting in May. This year’s meeting is postponed until fall 2020 because of COVID-19. In addition, only a digital version of the publication will be released this year. This report covers Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2019. So much change has occurred since the start of 2020. Readers may find it jarring to read of a time, not very long ago, when life at the Garden and in the world seemed so much simpler.

The year 2019 marked a major milestone in the Garden’s history— its 80th anniversary. This occasion was used to not only look back and remember the Garden’s roots in the early conservation movement in the 1930s, but to also look forward and to chart the Garden’s future as a leader in the global effort to conserve desert plants and habitats. In the pages that follow, you will read about all aspects of the Garden’s successes in 2019. This included the amazing Electric Desert by Klip Collective; an 18-acre urban farm and farmers market in south Phoenix; the growth and care of the collection of rare and endangered cactus and agave plants; and the philanthropic spirit of many friends of the Garden—past and present. Their generosity and vision have made us a leading cultural institution in Arizona and a vital conservation organization in the global effort to protect biodiversity. In everything it does, the Garden is guided by the four pillars of its mission—education, conservation, exhibition and research. It celebrates the beauty of the Sonoran Desert, is dedicated to unlocking the secrets of arid plants and ecosystems, sharing its knowledge wide and far, and is a champion for protecting and restoring desert habitats throughout the state. Less than 1% of the Garden’s operating budget comes from tax dollars. Instead, its operating budget is funded by admissions, events, and the incredible generosity of the community. It simply would not be possible without your support, and the main purpose of this annual report is to share what you have made possible. On behalf of everyone at the Garden—the Board, staff and volunteers—please accept my sincerest thanks for everything you do to make Desert Botanical Garden such a vital community asset. With best wishes,

Ken Schutz

A C U LT U R A L D E S T I N A T I O N Desert Botanical Garden has become a cultural treasure in the community—a place where visitors can marvel at light and sound shows, indulge in culinary feasts for the senses and watch ballet dancers pirouette in front of Papago’s peaks. Culture vultures are increasingly looking to the Garden for inspiring art and music, stimulating talks and classes, enriching family activities and culinary festivities. The aesthetic highlight of 2019 was Electric Desert—a kaleidoscope of colorful lights that Desert rippled across the desert flora, choreographed to original music from Klip Collective. The dynamic displays were a magnet for 192,000 visitors. Based on an economic impact study by

Wolf Brown, the blockbuster exhibit generated a $50-million impact on the local economy. It was made possible thanks to support from APS, Chase Private Client, The Steele Foundation, the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, American Airlines, the Tempe Tourism Office, Margaret T. Morris Foundation, Sunstate Equipment Co., LLC and Wilson Electric. Unprecedented crowds gathered to celebrate the Garden’s 80th anniversary on Feb. 16. Visitors enjoyed Behind-the-Scenes tours, a chalk art mural, nature play, a commemorative video, geocaching, food trucks and cupcakes.

Speaking of anniversaries, Devour Culinary Classic celebrated its 10th anniversary in February. Around 4,000 foodies flocked to the twoday outdoor extravaganza, which showcased the talents of Arizona chefs like James Beard Award semifinalist Silvana Salcido Esparza and Tamara Stanger. Locavores also savored Corks & Cactus’ boutique wines, the Chile & Chocolate’s spicy treats and Latin music, and Agave on the Rocks—a tasty ode to tequila and one of the Garden’s favorite plants.

A C U LT U R A L D E S T I N A T I O N , continued Of course, 2019 wasn’t just about food. Music fans returned again and again to the spring and fall Music in the Garden concerts. A varied lineup of bands—blues, jazz, Latin, Celtic and more—jammed on Ullman terrace, surrounded by saguaros and palo verdes. In addition, two timely, thought-provoking art shows transformed the issue of plastic pollution into reflections on recycling and sustainability.

Artist Michelle Stitzlein created New Bloom: Industrial Nature, Nature a stunning wall of colorful “plants” fashioned from garden hoses, computer cables and miscellaneous recycled and found objects. In Wild Rising by Cracking Art more than 1,000 penguins, meerkats, frogs and other colorful critters peek out from the plants. Made of recyclable plastic, the animals share serious messages of sustainability and conservation through whimsy and fun.

According to the installation’s creators, Italybased collective Cracking Art, “Recycling plastic removes it from its toxic role in nature and communicates, through an unconventional language, the importance of paying strong attention to our planet.” Other standout social offerings in 2019 included an alfresco performance from Ballet Arizona, a storytelling event honoring outdoor adventures, a series of silent dance parties, a Nobel laureate talk and Día de Los Muertos festivities. The Garden continues to be a hub for lifelong learning. In Baby Boojums classes, sensorybased nature play helps infants’ brains blossom. Through the Seedlings series, budding naturalists ages 3 to 5 explore the wonders of the desert. Thanks to this programming, children’s attendance jumped by 98% between 2016 and 2018. In addition, adults of all ages can participate in almost daily classes in history, art, landscaping, photography, outdoor tai chi, cooking and more.

L O C A L T O G L O B A L C O N S E R VA T I O N E F F O R T S In 2019, alarm bells rang around the world when the United Nations issued a report warning that one in four plant and animal species is at risk for extinction in the next few decades. Of particular interest to desert lovers, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has found that one-third of cactus species are in danger of extinction. In light of these dire predictions, the Garden’s guiding principle of “local to global conservation” is becoming increasingly vital. Fortunately in the last year, the Garden made numerous

advancements in its mission to rescue and preserve plant species. One of the highlights was the dedication in September of the Ahearn Desert Conservation Laboratory. The star of the 1,750-square-foot lab is the seed bank, which preserves seeds from nearly 5,000 seed collections. The Garden’s conservation scientists are venturing into deserts and wetlands to collect seeds of endangered plants such as the pediocactus and Southwestern orchids, then studying the species in anticipation of one day restoring them in the wild.

The Garden also received a substantial gift from donors Debbie and Ken Abbott that will further these research and conservation efforts. The donation allowed the Garden to purchase a new field vehicle and a fluorometer to diagnose the health of plants. The gift will also support the creation of the five-year Deborah Abbott Desert Research Fellowship. And it will fund plant collection trips to support the Garden’s strategic goal to achieve holding 85% of its targeted agave and cactus species in the next five years.

The watchword of the plan is sustainability. To maintain economic sustainability, the Garden aims to grow current revenue streams by 2.5% annually through hosting blockbuster installations and other art exhibits, adding fun and fresh experiences for people of all ages. To foster environmental sustainability, the Garden is pursuing several strategic goals in addition to its specimen collection efforts. Many of these include scientific research and documentation, because the philosophy in conservation is: “You have to know what you have before you can preserve it.” In 2019, the Garden met its target of producing at least 10 articles each year in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Alongside the IUCN, the Garden published international assessments on the conservation status of 125 agave species. In collaboration with Arizona State University

(ASU), the Garden’s researchers are mentoring several graduate students who are the next generation of desert plant protectors. To support the Garden’s work as the IUCN host institute for its Cactus and Succulent Plants Specialist Group, the Garden engaged a parttime programme officer for the specialist group —Jael Wolf. Finally, to strengthen social sustainability, the Garden is continuing its progress in attracting more diverse audiences. Top priorities are to increase attendance among children and their families, the LatinX community and Millennials. This can be achieved by advancing diversity in the Garden’s staff and volunteers, as well as offering experiences that are relevant, accessible and inspiring to a variety of cultures and generations.

U P D AT E O N T H E G A R D E N ’ S C O L L E C T I O N

In the five-year Strategic Plan, the Garden had 70% of known agave and cactus taxa, which is already a more-complete collection than anywhere in the world. One year into the plan, and the Garden has already taken great strides to accomplishing its goal—to grow this percentage to 85%.

Of the 1,686 known cactus species, the Garden has the climate and ability to keep 1,430 of them. Heading into 2020, the Garden has 1,014 taxa, which was an increase of 4% from the year prior. Another important conservation factor is the quantity in the collection gathered from the wild, because it ensures genetic diversity to improve the chances for survival of the species. Cactus species added this year included Opuntia streptacantha, Mammillaria fittkaui, Parodia haselbergii, Myrtillocactus geometrizans and Opuntia streptacantha. The Garden also had success with adding species to its collection of plants in the Agave family. There are 378 known agave species in the world, and the Garden can house 336. Nine new species were added to the collection (from 226 to 235), which is a 3% increase from the year prior. Agave species added this year included Yucca declinata, Nolina lindheimeriana, Yucca rupicola and Agave garcia-mendozae.

SPECIES In the collection

Specimens were not only gathered to add to the living collection, but they were also added to the herbarium. The Garden now has 41% of cactus species and 72% of known agaves represented in the herbarium. Another environmental sustainability goal outlined in the strategic plan was that the Garden would conduct a major collecting trip each year in order to expand the holdings in the Cactaceae and Agavaceae collections. This includes living plants, herbarium specimens, seeds, DNA sequences and digital images.

B R A N D I N G & C O M M U N I C AT I O N S S T R AT E G I E S The fourth pillar of the strategic plan is branding and communications. The annual strategy is lead by the marketing communications department and the board committee. It’s goals are to uphold the Garden’s brand as a community leader, an agent of change for ongoing conservation efforts and a place to enjoy the beauty of the desert. Achievements From 2019 Included: Finishing an intensive visitor survey with OVO and Halverson Group. The Garden extended its brand and messaging not just in the local community but through national and international audiences. In 2019, 1,968 press clips were recorded on television, online, in print and on the radio. In collaboration with partners from local convention and visitor bureaus, the Garden hosted more than 130 travel writer, bloggers and influencers from all around the world. As a result of

these visits and its own media relations efforts, media coverage was secured in the following:

Travel + Leisure • New York Times • Endless Vacation • Daily Mail • Windy City Times Chicago Tribune • American Way Canadian Traveller • Parents Magazine Los Angeles Times • The Toronto Sun USA Today • Travel Channel Media Tripsavy.com Great steps were also made to connect audiences outlined in the strategic plan, including LatinX, children and their families, and millennials. Marketing communications worked with Urias Communications to increase media relations and advertising presence locally and in Mexico. Market research only continues to show the growing importance of incorporating digital platforms into marketing strategies. The Garden enhanced its already growing online presence through digital advertising and social media.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Spaces of opportunity

In its seventh year, the 18-acre farm allows community members to rent a plot, grow and harvest produce for their own use and to build a vibrant neighborhood food system. The cooperative works to mentor the 15 incubator farmers from around the world and markets their produce primarily in south Phoenix. Spaces celebrated many successes in 2019, including the expansion of Vineyard Road, an addition of more than 60 native trees for roadside landscaping, a parking lot and restroom facilities. Thanks to Fund the Farm, the Garden’s fundraising event, donors helped complete a 9,500square-foot shade structure. Through the partnership with Roosevelt School District, Spaces was able to host 300 students for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEAM) activities and together planted a quarter acre of sunflowers. Spaces was also able to host an “influencer charrette” with more than 200 attendees and has grown so much that it received an IMLS grant to hire a community engagement coordinator. With these new resources, there is no telling what can be accomplished for the south Phoenix community.

CAZCA Central Arizona Conservation Alliance (CAZCA) involves more than 60 conservation-focused partners from Maricopa County and beyond. Together with regional partners, CAZCA developed a long-term strategy for the preservation of Maricopa County’s open spaces to support a healthy ecosystem and provide beautiful, safe open spaces for recreation, education and relaxation. CAZCA launched the Buffelgrass Blues initiative, which raised awareness of buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare) and other invasive plant species found in the City of Phoenix parks and preserves. Citizen scientists helped map invasive plants at Piestewa Peak. CAZCA was grateful to work with the Tovrea Carraro Society, Columbine Garden Club and the City of Phoenix to implement the Sonoran Seed Collaborative. This project is a pilot plot for studying how to grow and harvest seeds from native plants for use in local restoration projects. In 2019, the Garden hosted the third annual CAZCA Conservation Celebration which honored Maxine Lakin with the 2019 Conservation Award for her remarkable contributions to the conservation of the Sonoran Desert.

Great Milkweed Grow Out In the past two decades, the population of monarch butterflies has decreased by 90%. To prevent their extinction, the Garden began the Great Milkweed Grow Out (GMGO). Milkweed is the only plant that monarch butterflies can lay their eggs on and that their caterpillars can eat. A loss of milkweed habitat has been a major factor in the decline of the monarch population. In 2019, GMGO planted pollinator gardens with six local schools and three community groups. In 2019, 70 Volunteers in the Garden gave more than 800 hours to this initiative and five corporate volunteer groups assisted in the grow out. As a result of these combined efforts, more than 1,500 milkweed plants were grown and distributed throughout the community. Thanks to the generosity of Nancy Swanson, the Garden engaged interns for spring and fall of 2019. Home gardeners can now buy Garden grown milkweed in the Plant Shop and at the biannual Plant Sales. The GMGO team is grateful for encouragement and enthusiasm from the community, and are hopeful for the future of monarch butterflies and other pollinators. DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN

Decades of Philanthropy in the Garden For 80 years generous and committed individuals have invested time, talents and financial gifts to make the Garden the cultural treasure it is today. Ten individuals and two organizations are celebrated on these pages, and they represent the spirit of so many dedicated Desert Botanical Garden leaders and philanthropists.

PHILANTHROPY & MEMBERSHIP

1930s

1940s

Gertrude Webster & Gustaf Stark

Margaret Bell Douglas

It all started in the hearts and minds of Gertrude and Gustaf. In the early 1930s, thanks to the effots of Gustaf’s desert preservation efforts, a group of 16 individuals came together to create the Arizona Cactus and Native Flora Society. While Gustaf had the passion for the desert, Gertrude had the resources to expand their reach. Their connections to various news outlets and radio stations paved the way for the Society to negotiate the perpetual lease of several acres of Papago Park, and Desert Botanical Garden was born. The duo’s drive and fundraising efforts reflect within the Garden’s continued growth.

A Canadian botanist and horticulturist, Edith Margaret Bell Douglas loved the Sonoran Desert. After moving to the Southwest, she and her husband Walter grew to be a family of seven. Her passion for Desert Botanical Garden was fierce—Douglas assisted in building the Garden’s Lois Porter Earle Herbarium. She donated more than 1,500 specimens of the George B. Hinton collection of northern and central Mexico. A member-at-large of the Garden Club of America, in 1952 the Margaret Douglas Medal was created to honor those who have made strides in conservation education.

Lou Ella Archer Lou Ella Archer was never one to turn away from a challenge. A member of the first Advisory Board, Archer’s passion for and committment to the success and growth of the Garden was radiant. When Gertrude Webster passed away, she had left an endowment for the Garden with one stipulation to receive her bequest—cultivate 200 members. Upon hearing this, Archer and two other devoted Garden patrons purchased 75 memberships, gifting them to friends. It took two years for the estate to settle, but because of the generosity of Webster and the devotion of Archer, the Garden received the bequest and continued to grow.

1940s

Lois Earle Lois Porter Earle was the wife of W. Hubert Earle, Garden director from 1957 to 1976. Lois jump-started the Volunteer in the Garden (VIG) program that has now expanded to 731 volunteers annually. A model volunteer herself, she was the Garden’s jack of all trades during her husband’s time as director. She could often be found volunteering her time to support behindthe-scenes. Lois instilled a passion for the Garden and Sonoran Desert in her family and her legacy lives on in her son, John, an active VIG member today. A tribute to Lois lives in the Herbarium that reads, “Dedicated to the memory of one whose warm manner and unselfish work made worldwide friends for the Garden from 1957 to 1968.”

John Rhuart Among the first members of the Arizona Cactus and Native Flora Society in 1935. John was dedicated to the idea of the Garden and the possibilities that lived within it stayed true until his passing in 1982. He served as Board president from 1970 to 1976. His donation in 1978 was used to purchase 1,300 feet of pipeline laid just west of Archer House. This area was used to test plant species and the former Rhuart Demonstration Garden was named in his honor.

Nancy Swanson

1980s 1990s

A force to be reckoned with, Nancy Swanson has been a leader of growing the Garden since the early 80s. Initiating projects like planning the first DBG trip, conceptualizing and naming Dinner on the Desert and starting the Endowment. As board president Nancy led the way to the Plants and People of the Sonoran Desert Loop Trail, dedicated in 1988 and renewed last year. Leaving a legacy for years to come, she sponsored the entryway Honor Roll of Supporters that will allow the Garden to show appreciation of our supporters for decades to come. A true believer in horticulture, her support funds many Garden initiatives and internships.

Dr. William Huizingh On a vacation to Phoenix in 1959 Dr. William Huizingh accidentally stumbled upon his forever home. After his retirement from ASU he committed to his philanthropic passion. He found Desert Botanical Garden, and supported the mission as an active trustee. Starting in 1987, he served as an advisor with each Garden director, and in 1993, he became board president. He served twice as interim director, and as a result of his endowment gift, the position of executive director is titled, “The Dr. William Huizingh Executive Director.” A great supporter of each Garden capital campaign, Dr. Huizingh was a proponent of long-term financial planning for the Garden.

Melodie Lewis

2000s 2010s

Melodie Lewis found the Garden and began volunteering almost immediately after she moved to Arizona. A member of the Columbine Garden Club, Lewis was a master gardener who had a passion for nature and the Arizona desert. A dynamic board member starting in 1999, Lewis gave her time as board president from 2005 until 2007. She was active on many board committees, including the Tending the Garden campaign cabinet that raised $17.8 million for the Garden’s endowment, exhibits and programs.

Columbine Garden Club Committed to sharing the love of gardening and the importance of conservation, Columbine Garden Club—an affiliate of Garden Clubs of America—has supported the Garden since 1989. In 2018, Columbine members chose the Garden as the beneficiary of their A day in Full Bloom fundraiser. Their generosity is recognized by naming the Columbine Garden Club Greenhouse West Bay 3. Outside of their financial support, Columbine is also working with CAZCA to assist in their Sonoran Seed Collaborative. This will aid in sourcing propogation methods to sustain the growth of five key Central Arizona plant species key to restoration in our region.

The Future Monarch Council & Teniqua Broughton In 2008, Board President Oonagh Boppart recruited Teniqua Broughton to serve as a Trustee and engage young professionals with the Garden. Under Teniqua’s leadership the Monarch Council was born. The council chair annually serves as a Trustee and its members serve on a variety of board committees. One of the council’s current projects is helping to build the Emerging Leaders membership program for professionals 45 years and younger. These leaders bring a fresh perspective to the Garden that will flourish for decades to come.

Being a Volunteer in the Garden is an awesome experience, it gives me the opportunity to share with our visitors the beauty and tranquility that exists here. Every time I step foot in the Garden, I see something or learn something new, which adds to what I am able to share. And being with other volunteers and staff is like being a member of a family with a common goal: to make our visitors feel welcome.

Janet Weider Incoming VIG President

The Garden has truly grown throughout the community, and the community has grown within the Garden. What started as a small volunteer program just a few decades ago has expanded to more than 730 volunteers who completed 63,769 collective hours of service for the Garden in 2019. The Garden offers volunteer opportunities for teens and corporate volunteers. The Teens in the Garden program had 69 volunteers, and there were 15 participating corporations and community organizations. In this year alone, almost 260 individuals completed more than 100 hours, 21 completed 500 hours and more than 50 completed 1,000+ hours—12 of whom completed 5,000+ hours of service. The Garden is forever grateful for the dedication and love that our volunteers bring to their positions each day.

Financial Report We are pleased to share with members, donors and friends the Garden’s financial statements for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2019. The Consolidated Statement of Activities shows total revenues for the year exceeded total expenditures by $1.8 million. This positive result was driven by healthy admission, membership, contribution, and special event levels. Proceeds from Electric Desert | A Light and sound Experience by Klip Collective helped the Garden fund it’s operating and reserve accounts. Electric Desert held during this fiscal year, generated more than $3.5 million in admission revenue during its six month run. This continues a positive trend of strengthening relationships with the community. The Garden’s expenditures continue to be managed with careful stewardship in mind while at the same time seizing opportunities for growth and greater mission impact. The Consolidated Statement of Financial Position shows the Garden’s fiscal position remains solid, with more than $49.7 million in total assets and approximately $6.0 million in total liabilities. Unrestricted cash and Boarddesignated cash, $6.3 million, is sufficient for normal operations, and provide funds for repair and maintenance of major building systems as facilities age. The Garden Foundation manages endowment assets conservatively with an annual target of a 4.5 percent distribution from the Foundation to the Garden’s operating budget. The Garden’s total debt of $1.13 million represents just 2.3 percent of the total combined assets of the Garden and Foundation. The Garden’s financial health and success in achieving its mission would not be possible without your commitment, dedication and generosity. On behalf of the Board, staff and volunteers, we extend our gratitude for all that you do for the Garden.

Desert Botanical Garden is committed to full transparency in financial stewardship. Our complete audited financial statements are posted on the website. There you will also find the annual IRS Form 990 filings for the Garden and Foundation. Please visit dbg.org to review these documents. The Consolidated Statement of Financial Activities reports the results of Garden Operations excluding the effect of depreciation expense. Depreciation refers to the systematic allocation of the cost of long-lived assets, including buildings, furniture, fixtures, and equipment, to the periods that benefit from their use. Recording depreciation has no effect on the liquidity or cash flow of the Garden. It reflects an estimate of the using up of the economic value of tangible assets. In the financial statements it reduces the Change in Net Assets (and, therefore, Total Net Assets) and the carrying basis of Property and Equipment. Unlike for-profit firms, not-for-profit organizations generally do not provide for the addition or replacement of major long-lived assets out of operations. Historically such entities look to capital contributions for those improvements. Hence, the financial performance for not-for-profits is best evaluated by analyzing operating results excluding the effects of depreciation. Depreciation expense recognized in the Garden’s records for 2019 was $1.57 million.

Auditor’s Opinion Desert Botanical Garden has received an unmodified opinion from their auditors, Mayer Hoffman McCann, P.C., on the audit of their financial statements for the year ended September 30, 2019.
