Loaded WaiBOP Football v Northern Football 1pm, Sunday October 22, 2017 John Kerkhof Park, Cambridge
Welcome to our visitors WaiBOP Football welcomes the Northern Football players and staff to John Kerkhof Park for this afternoon’s round 2 National Women’s League encounter. As this is our first home game of the season we’re looking to put in a good performance to reward local football fans. The crowds were great, in terms of both size and support, at Cambridge last summer and we’re hopeful of more of the same today. On the footballing side of things, we obviously had a very tough season opener down in Christchurch against the defending champions. WaiBOP coach, Barry Gardiner, was not too disheartened by the performance and felt there were some promising signs. “We were disappointed with the result obviously but I think there were elements of our play that were Front Cover Michaela Foster in action for WaiBOP against Canterbury United Pride during the 2016 season.
good,” he said. “We did well out of possession at times but could have been better in possession. There’s stuff to work on but we’re proud of the players because it was a really good team we played against. Most teams will have problems down there against Canterbury.” And it looks like things won’t be getting any easier today. Alongside Canterbury, Northern is one of the favourites for the 2017 title. We know they’ll be looking to put things right after missing the play-offs last summer and they began in the best possible fashion with a big win last weekend. There’s also the small matter of the 2016 match between the two sides that we’re sure Northern will be looking to avenge. Thank you to Cambridge FC for again providing the venue and a host of volunteers. Playing at John Kerkhof Park is always a top quality experience. We hope everyone enjoys today’s entertainment.
Our Home John Kerkhof Park, Cambridge John Kerkhof Park has been used for football since 1967 and is the home of Cambridge FC as well as being a regular venue for regional football games and tournaments. The ground has been the training base and home venue for WaiBOP’s NWL side in 2016 and 2017 and successfully hosted ten
men’s National League fixtures (for WaiBOP United) over the summers of 2014 and 2015. The park is named after John Kerkhof, a Dutch immigrant who settled in Cambridge and who with other members of the Kerkhof family built the ground’s original club and changing room facilities.
This is one of the lasting memories from our 2016 National Women’s League campaign. WaiBOP when you can boogie? Why indeed?
NWL 2017 - Round 1 Canterbury United Dragons and Northern have signalled their intention to be among the gloryhunters again while Southern United have proven just how determined they are to improve. In the season opener on Saturday, defending champions Canterbury began their bid for a fourth title in five years in promising fashion with a 4-1 win over WaiBOP while 2015 winners Northern also notched a high-scoring victory a day later, sweeping aside Central 5-1. Both those results went the way of the favourites but that was far from the case in Dunedin as Southern shocked a star-studded Auckland line-up 3-2. Southern began brightly and earned reward for that endeavour by taking the lead just past the half hour. Shontelle Smith had already had a pair of well-directed free kicks that nearly went in and would not be denied a third time, keeping her cool from the penalty spot to smash Southern into a surprise lead. The hosts took that advantage into the break but found themselves back on level terms when Stephanie Skilton underlined her quality with a classy finish past Tessa Nicol. But the home crowd was soon sent into raptures again on the hour when the lead was restored through Eleanor Isaac. Auckland equalised again in the 69th minute, this time via Jacqui Hand. Remarkably the home side got their noses in front yet again
when Renee Bacon delivered an outstanding strike on the turn with just over five minutes remaining to make it 3-2. Southern clung on to record their first victory in more than four years. In Christchurch, the Dragons had their Football Ferns contingent largely to thank for their win over WaiBOP. Having been part of the national team’s recent tour of the USA, Meikayla Moore, Annalie Longo and Aimee Phillips all found the net on their return to domestic action. Moore got the opener just past the half-hour mark but it was a short-lived lead as Sarah Krystman equalised just seven minutes later. That proved no more than a consolation in the end though as Phillips struck twice in 15 minutes at the start of the second half before captain Longo wrapped up a pleasing afternoon for the hosts with a goal deep into injury time. Having looked on as Canterbury laid down the gauntlet, Northern responded with a dominant display of their own on the turf at QBE Stadium. Hayley Stirling’s side raced into a three-goal lead within the first half hour as Jane Barnett haunted her former team by scoring twice either side of a Dayna Stevens strike. Central earned a glimmer of hope when Meisha Boone got them on the scoreboard in the 71st minute. But a late double from Sam Tawharu made sure there would be no dramatic comeback.

WaiBOP opened the 2017 season with a home double header against Hawkes Bay. Both games were played at The Peak in Hamilton. The two teams split the series one game apiece. Hawkes Bay scored three late goals in the opening encounter to score an upset 4-2 win in the opening match, before WaiBOP opened their account with a 3-0 win the following day. In what’s shaping up already as quite an open season, with no team winning twice on the opening weekend, WaiBOP looks forward to a big weekend on October 28 and 29. The team has four games scheduled - two each against both Northern Football and Auckland Football.
