DFN2003 | URBAN RESIDENCE MARIETTA, GEORGIA

6

<di-’zīn work: 2006-2014>

Design Foundation, Year 2, Spring Semester: After a series of precedent studies and architectonic follies, the Urban Residence was the first project given with a specified site, client, and program. Situated two blocks south of the historic Marietta Square our task was to design a series of urban residences to fill the entire rectangular block. The client’s assigned were an astrophysicist and art dealer. Given the site’s proximity to a highly trafficked railroad line sound pollution became a primary design concern to address. To address this issue a sound buffer in the form of an architectural datum wall was implemented as a key architectural form that organizes and shields the structure. The house is elevated off of the ground in order to give the residence a modest yard and a protected space in which to park their automobiles. The key architectural components that address the client’s professional interests are a front entry hall / art ramp and an inclined observation loft from which to view the setting sun and Kennesaw Mountain to the west.

ARCH3012 | INMAN PARK MASTER PLAN ATLANTA, GEORGIA

16

<di-’zīn work: 2006-2014>

Located along Atlanta’s proposed Beltline project and situated between two disparate communities, a historically lower class African American neighborhood (Fourth Ward) and an upper class neighborhood (Inman Park), the Highland Transit Hub is a study in healing urban, social, and ecological wounds. Upon investigating the history of the site it became apparent that the railroad tracks not only functioned as a division between the two communities they hid a deeper secrete in the form of a battery dump and extensive ground contamination. In order to address these concerns as well as answer the planned need for a transit hub to serve the proposed light rail system a landscape of man made wetlands and natural burial cemetery was proposed. Rainwater is harvested from Highland avenue percolated through the site and scrub clean in series of wetlands to the north. The clean water is then utilized as a landscape amenity in the proposed Fourth Ward Park located to the north.

HAMAD MEDICAL CITY | 4D MEDICAL CLINICS DOHA, QATAR In an effort to remain competitive in the recently privatized Qatari medical system, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has embarked upon an extensive building program that seeks to distinguish itself from other Gulf State healthcare providers. The HMC 4D project is a state-of-the-art medical clinic for Dentistry, Diabetes, Dermatology, and Organ Donor services. Located in Doha, Qatar the 57,000 square-meter clinic building is part of Hamad Medical City and will serve as an iconographic anchor for the western edge of the medical campus.

maximum flexibility and accommodate a wide spectrum of clinic types with little to no alteration necessary as the building fluctuates over time. A series of exam rooms are linearly distributed to form the clinic module. This module, oriented east-west, maximizes visual comfort and reduces solar heat gain as it becomes the buildings fundamental organizational element.

50

<di-’zīn work: 2006-2014>

These clinic modules are then arrayed horizontally to form an interconnected chain. In contrast to a typical clinic building, these chains are then pulled apart to create intermittent gaps between With the projected surge in population growth, the focus of each department-block, which allow every exam room access to HMC has shifted from providing services to the entire general daylight and views. This vital concept is paramount to provide a population, to becoming the premium healthcare facility in the premium experience for both patients and doctors. The department region. KING SAUD bin ABDULAZIZ UNIVERSITY | ADMINSTRATION TOWER RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA Located on the main axis of the KSAU Riyadh campus the administration tower lies between an existing and a newly proposed landscaped parking deck plaza. Responding to this context, the tower hovers over a multistory lobby, lifted above the planted parking terrace, thus heightening its prominence within the surrounding campus. Important programmatic elements contained within the structure are expressed on the building’s exterior. The exterior glass façade is sheathed in a carefully detailed sunscreen and architectural frit pattern that provides protection and relief from the harsh sun as well as minimizes the building’s heating and cooling requirements. The vehicular drop-off, located to the west, allows direct views from the academic campus and separates the traffic from the hospital to the east. The ground floor lobby acts as a public node connecting the administration tower, the adjacent parking decks, the Women’s hospital, and the Children’s hospital. This entourage of speciality hospitals is connected through the implementation of a landscape “carpet” that unites and harmonizes the context. In order to activate the ground floor space a sunken auditorium is provided along with supplementary architectural amenities.

The building is raised up to maximize its prominence. A landscape carpet extends underneath to connect with the surrounding context.

The auditorium and bank components are pulled out from the tower and pushed into the landscape creating a breezeway entrance and sunken garden activating the landscape carpet.

6. BUILDING SUNSCREEN: Based on the building’s solar relationship, a predominantly vertical screen was selected to shield the building from the harsh desert sun.

CENTRAL ARKANSAS RADIATION THERAPY INSTITUTE | CANCER CLINIC LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS The Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute (CARTI) currently exists as a series of small cancer clinics scattered around the greater Little Rock area. The intent of this new facility is to unify the organization’s brand image by aggregating these smaller clinics into one medical facility with state of the art patient care and medical technology. Externally, the building’s image projects stability and strength internally, the interior design is intended to project peace, serenity, and warmth. Given the site’s location on a wooded overlook expansive picture windows and integrated healing gardens are incorporated into the center’s treatment regimen.

1. ROCK:

The building responds to the unique topography of the site integrating the sloped landscape into the design in addition to borrowing design inspiration from the indegenious rocks that are present on the site.

2. SPLIT: The building is organized around a thru-lobby space that bisects

3. BEND: The building’s length is broken up by bending the front facade to cradle and envelop the arriving patients.

4. TRANSPARENCY: The transparent northern facade reveals the waiting spaces within and facilitates easy patient navigation as well as optimal daylighting.

5. NATURE: Outdoor spaces seek to fuse the natural healing qualities of nature with the medical treatments performed within.

6. TEXTURE: The building’s richly textured stone facade expresses the strength of the center and is elegantly peeled away revealing the soft natural wood of the interiors. The warm color palette is intended to inspire peace, serenity, and hope.

PEOPLE UNITED FOUNDATION | CLASSROOM BUILDING ATLANTA, GEORGIA

82

<di-’zīn work: 2006-2014>

The People United Foundation, Inc is a 501c-3 nonprofit organization that was formed in 2011 to fill a noticeable void in the Atlanta Public Schools educational system. The foundation serves 1000 Georgia residents (800 Fulton county residents) that are no longer being served by the educational system in a recessed economy that continues to forsake those living in “dysfunctional” communities. The foundation’s vision is to stimulate the economy in these downtrodden areas by educating future community leaders and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among the youth of these communities. The specific areas of educational focus are a youth agricultural entrepreneurship program and a digital arts program. With this directive in mind the organization wishes to create a small classroom building in the heart of a historically African American community known as Atlanta University Center. The program for the center includes multi-purpose classroom spaces, audio visual rooms, offices, break room, and a roof deck for celebratory events. Due to the narrow lot size the center is organized in a vertical stack versus a horizontal field. This project was delivered under Perkins + Wills Social Responsibility Initiative in which the offices donate 1% of wage hours to pro-bono work in communities.

MISSION HOSPITAL | ROOM PROTOTYPES ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA Located in Asheville, North Carolina among the Blue Ridge Mountains, Mission Hospital is poised to undertake an extensive addition project to their existing facilities in order to keep pace with a growing population base and their medical needs. Due to the site constraints, and the volume of program required by the design brief, the design intervention required will come in the form of a medical tower. Given the building’s proximity to the scenic mountains the client has expressed a keen interest in pursuing a design that economizes floorplate space while still allowing for patients to view the mountains beyond in an effort to integrate the landscape in the healing process. With this in mind the room development strategies explored strive to maximize the view of the landscape while still maintaining an efficient layout. The strategies illustrated explore the possibilities of a patient room with an outboard rest room, inboard rest room, and a midboard rest room.

CENTER FOR RESILIENT HOUSING Problem: As the effects of climate change begin to materialize, we are poised to witness one of the greatest mass relocations since the Industrial Revolution if precautions are not taken and resiliency plans not implemented. In the U.S. alone, an estimated five million people live in 2.6 million homes situated only four feet above sea level. Scientists estimate that by 2100 at least 1,100 cities will experience some form of water intrusion. From the isle of Manhattan to the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, the dangers of sea level rise cut across socio-economic and geopolitical spectrums.

climate resilient floating residences

Urban Composition:

The Philadelphia Center for Climate Resilient Housing is a proposal for a model community located along the Delaware River whose intent is to provide a viable form of affordable housing for regions affected by sea level rise. The organization of the community is a worker co-op program in which laborers are provided with room, board, and training in exchange for their labor building affordable floating residences. These floating residences can be used locally or deployed to sinking cities across the U.S. The model itself of a waterfront live-work community can be deployed across the globe and adapted to regional climates, a clear departure from Modernism’s “one-size-fits-all” approach to affordable residences. A pontoon residence meant for the inland canals of upstate New York would not be applicable for waters off the Gulf of Mexico which are subject to hurricanes and other gulf phenomena.

The urban composition for The Philadelphia Center for Climate Resilient Housing is comprised of 5 key functions: (1) affordable worker housing, (2) floating residence manufacturing facility + integrated power generation facility, (3) administration building + skills training center + retail spaces, (4) performing arts center and (5) river walk promenade. These programmatic functions are arranged on the site with sensitivity shown towards the unique site conditions—urban grid vs. river walk frontage—as well as leveraging their abilities to supplement and fortify one another. To mitigate the transition from the Philadelphia urban grid to serpentine river walk community, the administration building, including a skills training center and retail spaces, acts as a buffer as well as a framing device for the community beyond. Beyond the proscenium frame of the administration building is the affordable worker housing and performing arts center.

Located along the Delaware River, these buildings connect to the river walk promenade with intermittent interruption by river docks. Finally, the floating residence manufacturing facility is located so that it connects the urban domain and the river frontage, allowing for freight rail access along South Columbus Boulevard as well as dry dock access to the Delaware River.

ROGUE TOWER | CONCEPTUAL PROJECT ATLANTA, GEORGIA

100

<di-’zīn work: 2006-2014>

Designed mainly as a tongue-in-cheek commentary on corporate culture this tower is part architecture part weapon of mass destruction. Contemporary corporate culture is characterized by the drive to maximize profits at any and all cost to society. This means inflicting harm upon the environment as well as limiting the civil and human rights of many individuals across the globe. This project seeks to imagine an alternative to contemporary corporate culture’s masquerade behind marble cladding, glass, and steel facades and seeks to give an accurate representation of the true horror that lies beneath the surface
