Each year, Don Bosco Tech Society organises a convention to addresses the recent needs in skill development sector to achieve the mission of Don Bosco. DB Tech invites leaders from industry, social sector, government and general public for an exhaustive discussion on the concerns, opportunities, challenges, successful intervention, models, approaches and strategies in skill development sector. Based on the outcomes, DB Tech sets it goals for the next year. This convention is being organized with the aim of exchanging knowledge upon the next level of skill development, which not only delivers quality deliverables but adapts innovative methods and technology to reach out to masses at the remote locations of India. Bangalore, Karanataka: There could not have been a more opportune synchrony of the inauguration of the research and innovation skill training centre ‘Don Bosco Skill Mission’ and the 8th National Convention ‘Skill Development V2.0 | Redefining Quality and Technology’ held on March 20-21, 2015. The objective of this National Convention is to deliberate upon next level of skill development which not only delivers quality deliverables but adapt innovative methods and technology to reach out mass at the remote location This convention aims to advance the debate about how DB Tech can meet the higher skills requirements of India’s future economy. The National Convention commenced with a prayer by Fr. Remesh Cherian, SDB (Director-Training, DB Tech) which was followed by lighting of the lamp by Fr. A. M. Joseph, SDB (Executive Director, DB Tech), Fr. Thomas Anchukandam, SDB (Former Chairperson, DB Tech), Fr. Joyce Matthew, SDB (Provincial of Bangalore), Sr. Leelamma, FMA and other dignitaries. Fr. Joyce Matthew stressed on the difference between ‘building’ a nation, vis-à-vis ‘making a nation’. Every youth needs to be empowered in Don Bosco’s way i.e. getting into the spirit of Don Bosco through this Skill Mission. Fr. Adolf Furtado expressed deep gratitude to Fr. Anchukandam for his immense support in achieving the dream of DB Tech and Don Bosco Skill Mission. Fr. Anchukandam presented his final remarks by stressing on 3 Cs: Conviction, Competence and Commitment to realize our common dream. Two research study reports ‘Impact Assessment of DB Tech’s Skill Training’ by Dr. Joe Arimpoor, SDB (Director, DB ARK) and ‘Skill Development Training Needs Assessment – A Cross Sectional Study of Indian Youth’ by Dr. J. Henry Rozario (Associate Professor, Head of the Dept. of Social Work, Sacred Heart College) were released by Fr. Joyce Matthew and Fr. Anchukandam. Presentations on the study findings were also made by the authors analyzing the Youth Situation and Impact of Skill Training in India.

Bangalore, Karnataka: Don Bosco Skill Mission (DBSM), the resource development centre of Don Bosco Tech was inaugurated at Bannerghata Road (Bangalore, Karnataka) on March 19, 2015. DBSM was inaugurated by Fr. Maria Arokiam Kanaga, SDB (Regional Councillor - South Asia, Salesians of Don Bosco) in the presence of Mr. Eric Lavertu (French Consul General, Bangalore), Ms. Manuela Balett (Bachmann Foundation), Fr. Thomas Anchukandam, SDB (Former Chairperson, DB Tech), Fr. Jose Mathew, SDB (Provincial of Delhi), Fr. K. O. Thomas, SDB (Vice Provincial of Bangalore), Fr. A. M. Joseph, SDB (Executive Director, DB Tech) and an august gathering of priests, nuns, staff, alumni from DB Tech and various Don Bosco institutions. The centre inauguration started with cutting of ribbon ceremony and lighting of the lamp by Fr. Maria Arokiam, Fr. Anchukandam, Ms. Ballet and Ms. Bidisha Das (Assistant Manager – M&E and MIS, Guwahati State Office, Assam, DB Tech) accompanied by a beautiful rendition of prayer song presented by alumni of DB Tech (Dimapur) centre. The guests had closely looked at the facilities provided at the DBSM and the new Schneider’s Electrical Centre of Excellence Lab. During the inaugural function, the alumni brought a sense of pride to one and all by narrating their candid stories of a life-altering experience through DB Tech’s skill training. The newly inaugurated sprawling 75,000 sq. ft. campus of DBSM is a state-ofthe-art innovation centre set up by DB Tech with the whole-hearted support of Don Bosco family. DB Tech understands that the trainers are the backbone of the organisation and the foundations in achieving the desired mission with greater quality. Amalgamating quality with technological advancement, DBSM has been evolved as a master training centre for upscaling, upgrading and updating the technical and soft skills of trainers working across India in the common mission of ‘Skilling India’ and a target to train 2.2 million youth by 2022. Fr. Maria Arokiam enthralled the audience with his sense of humour and also congratulated Fr. A. M. Joseph and his committed team for their passion and persistence to achieve this dream for DB Tech, facing all odds. Fr. Anchukandam also congratulated DB Tech and narrated the history of DB Tech. While addressing the gathering, Fr. Joseph spoke about the purpose and objectives behind establishing Don Bosco Skill Mission. This resource development centre of DB Tech is having meeting halls, offices, conference room, auditorium, residential facilities, staff quarters, etc. Besides that few state-of-the-art labs are set-up for advanced skill development courses like Electrical, Plumbing and Air Conditioning with technical and infrastructural support from its long-standing partners like Schneider Electric, Jaguar, GREE, Taj, Accenture, Godrej and VDMA. In coordination with Government departments, private and professional organizations, DB Tech will achieve its mission by innovating various skill training models catering to different groups of youth in various geographical locations and needs.

I appreciate the selfless service of Salesians. Five odd years, I have been working in NSDC. My association and whatever little I am able to build the capability of DB Tech, I am very proud of that. Whatever DB Tech has been doing is very different and is being path breaking. My sincere thanks to Fr. Jose and Provincials for initiating such entity; and all of you are the torchbearers in the ground.

Dr. Mathew J. Manimala (Professor, Organisational Behaviour, IIM - Bangalore) gave opening remarks with a key message that there are different levels of ‘Quality’ through interesting examples. He also suggested, “We should develop technology locally instead of waiting for new technology to be reached to us. There is a need to develop qualities of autonomous and independent thinking in order to innovate new technologies.” The two-day intensive sessions brought out some important insights by Salesians, industry experts, academicians and change agents from civil society. The first session on ‘Quality Training: Need and a Challenge’ was discussed by eminent panelists. Dr. Shanti Raghavan (Founder, EnAble India) stressed on ‘attidu’-ing amongst the trainers and the trainees. Mr. Ranjan Choudhry (Principal, Investing and Incentivising, NSDC) informed the participant in his address that the Star Scheme Version 2 will be launched very soon; and he urged DB Tech to become a partner to implement the project across India. Dr. Santosh Mehrotra (Former Director General, Institute of Applied Manpower Research) busted two major myths about the numbers adopted by Govt. of India by explaining his estimates about the number of youth to be trained and the predicted the labour force in India per annum. He advocated shifting the focus from ‘job seekers’ to ‘job creators’ through entrepreneurship development models in skill training.

In the panel discussion on ‘Fostering Innovation: Transformation Models of Skill Training’, Prof. Tyagaraj (Executive Director, Karnataka Vocational Training and Skill Development Corporation) moderated the session with two speakers Dr. Wuttke Juergen (Counsellor, Head of Social and Labor Affairs, Vocational Education and Training, German Embassy) and Mr. John Gibbons (AIF Clinton Fellowship, Babajob.com). The panelists talked about PPP models of the vocational and technical education system. They stressed on the need to develop a digital platform through technology for the unorganized sector. Prof. Tyagaraj raised some pertinent questions as to why our innovations are more accidental and less perpetual. He suggested several changes in terms of attitudes and mind-sets. Mr. Varun Aggarwal (CTO and CEO, Aspiring Minds) presented the AMCAT - a platform to provide the skill measurements for each youngster. Aligning with the market requirement, Fr. A. M. Joseph announced that in partnership with Aspiring Minds, this assessment model will be implemented at all DB Tech centres across India .

The partnership with Don Bosco is designed to address the productive skill gap. We developed skill up-gradation ladder which make the youngsters to become the master in the CNC Operation trade. In this skill ladder, while climbing step by step, they can opt to work any point of time and rejoin the course to upgrade the skills. Mr. G.V. DB Tech trains 40,000 youth each year; and Times Group touches the same number. We are very excited about the initiative that DB Tech has taken to skill the youth of this country and the transformations are happening at the ground.
