Guest Lecture on HIV/AIDS at DB Tech (Madurai, Tamil Nadu)

A guest lecture on HIV/AIDS was organized at DB Tech (Madurai) on February 7, 2014. The trainees from all domains including Retail Sales, Hospitality, BPO and Electrical attended the program along with the trainers. The lecture was organized with the aim to enhance

students’ knowledge and create awareness about HIV/AIDS for its prevention. Dr. Pon Padmanaban, working with AIDS patients for the last three years at Tirunelveli was invited as the resource person for the lecture. Before starting the session, Rev. Fr. Pinto (Rector & Correspondent, DBITI, Madurai) introduced the resource person to the students and urged them to make positive use of the session. Dr. Pon Padmanaban started the session quite interactively asking the students about the sources through which one can get affected by HIV/AIDS. Some of the trainees shared some valuable insights that helped the lecturer to initiate the session. Discussing with the students, he stated that HIV does not get transferred through hugging, touching, wearing the clothes of HIV patients or even through sharing food with them. Unprotected sexual relationship with an HIV infected person, using unsterilized syringes and scissors, blood transfusion from an infected donor are some of the real causes of HIV/AIDS. In case the mother is HIV positive, the child can also get affected by this deadly disease. Adding to the discussion, he advised the students to not to discriminate HIV affected people, don’t treat them as untouchable. They are normal human beings, thus behave like one. Rather one should show sympathy and affection and extra care towards them. The students were even shown documentary films and movies on AIDS in order to give clarifications about the disease and better understanding.

Kajipeta Mamatha

I

Kajipeta Mamatha, daughter of Mr. Pandu, is a Hotel Management student of DB Tech located at Gagillapuram. I belong to Narasapuram, which is a small town in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The most distressing part of my life is my father has two wives; and he looks after only the second family leaving me and my elder brother to be a burden on my mother. My mother has been struggling quite hard to not only feed us but also to educate us. I was studying at Don Bosco Human Resource Development Centre located at Gagillapuram (Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh). I discovered about BASE programme, when DB Tech representatives visited our college to inform us about their three months training programme that provides placement assistance at the end of the training. Knowing about this training programme, I was in high spirit to enrol the training program. The moment I reached at home, I took permission from my mother and brother to join the training. It was then I visited DB Tech (Gagillapuram) to enroll myself in the Hospitality domain. At first, I used to be really scared of speaking English and my English was very poor. I didn’t even knew how to read, write and speak in English. I didn’t even had any knowledge of computer. But during the training at DB Tech, all my fears were vanished; and now I am a confident lady, who cannot only speak English but can also use computer to take the order of the customer coming at Coffee Day Express. Yes, this is where I got the placement (Coffee Day Express) after completing the three months training in Hospitality. DB Tech provided me an opportunity for lifetime. In three months of learning process, there were several things to learn about including life skills and basics of computer. I sincerely thank all my facilitators for teaching me well and providing an excellent job that I have placed in. Today I am earning a salary of Rs. 6000 per month and supporting my family. My mother is really happy with this great achievement. Don Bosco Tech is helping many like me who are unemployed and living in extreme poverty. I thank DB Tech from the bottom of my heart.
