DB Empower – Employers’ Meet at DB Tech (Karnataka) DB Tech (Karnataka) organized an Employers’ Meet, “DB Empower - Don Bosco and Employers’ Programme on Workspace and Enhancing Relationship” on October 19, 2013. Mr. Vijay Shankar KAS (Director, ITBT and MD - KBITS, Govt. of Karnataka) was invited as the Chief Guest who gave the key note address. Rev. Fr. George Mathew (Economer, Bangalore Province, Don Bosco) presided over the function. Rev. Fr. Jeeson Nelluvelil (Regional Head, DB Tech, South) welcomed the guests in the employers’ meet. After that Fr. A. M. Joseph (Executive Director, Don Bosco Tech) delivered his address to the employers related to the recent trends of skill development. A total of 23 companies from various sectors participated in the employers’ meet. The meet was organized with a purpose to enhance the relationship, to make better collaboration and to improve hiring process among the industries. Mr. Vijay Shankar emphasized the need for hands on skills. He enlightened the support given to start rural BPOs and the IT policies of Karnataka. Other dignitaries and employers appreciated DB Tech for its quality training and expressed how the trainees need to be trained in a better way that suits the accurate industrial requirements. There was an interaction session facilitated by Dr. Arogyaraj (Professor, Sacred Heart College, Tirupattur). He intended at the need assessment for skill development training so that it suits to the needs of the youth. The employers were felicitated with a memento for the support that they have extended in supporting Don Bosco Tech in different ways.
Electrical Exposure Visit to Meditron
With an aim to provide practical training, the students of the Electrical domain at DB Tech (Kokar) had gone for an exposure visit on October 24, 2013. Around 24 students along with Mr. Umakant (Electrical Trainer, DB Tech, Kokar) visited Meditron Sirtdo
Four days training programme was organized for the new trainers working under ABF and OLM projects at DB Tech (Ranchi) on October 21- 24, 2013. The session started with an introduction and expectations of the participants from this training. Next session was about DB Tech, where the DB Tech’s mission and vision were highlighted followed by the guidelines of ABF and OLM projects. Then, a video documentary was shown to the participants. Further the group was briefed upon how DB Tech is rewriting India’s skillscape by training and placing thousands of youth across country every year. The training was facilitated through videos, role plays and Powerpoint presentations. The trainers were informed about the history and scope of skill development in India along with a group activity on National Rural Livelihood Mission. The second day started with DB Tech’s process of preimplementation, implementation and postimplementation. The process was being discussed thoroughly and debated through simulation activities, group presentations and role plays. Importance and strategies of mobilization were discussed through mock session on mobilization and counseling.
Training on ‘Personal Enhancement to Empower the Youth’
Industrial Estate (BIT, Mesra, Ranchi). Ms Jyoti Aggarwal (DGM, Meditron) welcomed students with a warm smile. She divided the team into two groups for a knowledgeable visit. She briefed them about Meditron which is sponsored by Birla Institute of Technology Science & Techno Entrepreneurs’ Park (BITSTEP). The students were explained several terms including 11 KV Resin Cast Potential Transformer, Crane Control Panel, Data Logger, Earth Leakage Relay, Field Switch, High Tension Control and Relay Panel, HT Coupler/Plug and Socket, Hut Type Unitised Sub Station, Motor Control Centre, Open MCC/DB For Coke Oven, Unitized Sub Station, Vacuum Circuit Breaker, VCB Panel, etc.
As part of staff capacity enhancement program, DB Tech and BREADS organized staff training on ‘Personal Enhancement to Empower the Youth’ for its formal, non-formal and skill training trainers at DB Tech (Vaduthala, Kerala) on October 25-26, 2013. About 36 trainers from vocational training institutes of Kerala attended the event. Fr. Dr. Thomas Varkey SDB (Counselor, Don Bosco, Monvila) was invited as the resource person for the training program. The program was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Chirackel Devassy SDB (Rector, Don Bosco, Vaduthala). Fr. Jeeson Nelluvelil SDB (Regional Head, DB Tech-South) oriented the staff on the need for undergoing this training stating that it will make one more effective in empowering the youth. Leading the session, Fr. Thomas Varkey helped the participants
understand various aspects of human behavior. He also taught Emotional Freedom Techniques - Tapping points. The sessions really helped in understanding oneself and the others. By the end of the training, the participants were able to resonate positive energy.
On third day, the participants were oriented about induction module and its process followed by a classroom session on how to conduct theory as well as practical class at a training centre along with guest lectures, exposure visits and on-job-training. On the last day, there were sessions on documentation process, how to prepare and maintain MIS, implementation of fee based model, financial guidelines, reimbursement claim guidelines and different M&E-MIS formats. The training ended with a feedback session and vote of thanks.
Parents Meet under Quest S2S Project at DB Tech (Madurai) Under Project - Quest S2S, a parents meet was organised at DB Tech (Madurai) on October 16, 2013. The parents of Retail and Sales domain students were invited to have an interaction with the trainers. The gathering started with an inaugural speech by Centre Head. He also introduced all the trainers to the parents. Then each of the trainers interacted with the parents helping them understand the importance of the entire programme and how it will help their children for their betterment. The trainers insisted the point that regular attendance of the students in the class is must for the placement. The trainers and the parents even discussed trainees’ attendance and performance. At last, parents and the students gave a
very positive feedback for the program as well as about the participation of trainers in the academic as well as cocurricular activities and appreciated the system. Trainees were of the view that such an activity has drawn them more towards this course.
Campus Interview by VLCC at DB Tech (Hatia) Campus interview was arranged at DB Tech (Hatia) for the Beautician domain trainees on October 28, 2013. The students, who have completed their three months of training and looking ahead for placement, were asked to attend this campus inteview. Carrying their updated resume, around 20 Beautician students attended the interview. Miss Sweta Singh (Beauty Manager & Center Manager, VLCC, Rourkela) was invited to complete the selection formalities and preliminary procedure. There were different rounds of
interview. The first was the face to face interview which was followed by final interview and discussion. After the interview procedure was over, sharing her experience Miss Sweta Singh said, “I am really happy to meet such capable students, they really have domain knowledge and I also appreciate the work DB Tech is doing for the welfare of vulnerable section of the society." She summed up with an inspirational thought, “Sometimes people are beautiful, not in looks, not in what they say, just in what they are.” Many of the students cleared the interview successfully and were asked to join at a stipend of Rs 5000.

partially differently abled person particularly from a BPL family is always taken in sympathetic note. Their hidden talent often faces unfavorable circumstances in which they compel to surrender. At this juncture timely guidance is pivotal. Here is the success story of one such determined partially disabled youth. Mr. Dillip Haripal, a Sales and Marketing trainee have undertaken 3-month skill training at DB Tech (Sonepur) under OLM (Odisha Livelihood Mission) project. DB Tech and ORMAS (Panchayat Raj Department, Government of Odisha) have come together to provide assistance for skill formation of the rural youth and to enhance their capacity to undertake self-employment as well as access better salaried employment through different market driven trades. Under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) scheme, Odisha Livelihood Mission (OLM) is started to create high-quality skilled work force / entrepreneur relevant to emerging market by providing market-driven skills to rural youth. Dillip hails from a small village Amamunda, which is located in Binika district of Sonepur. His father, Mr Narendra Haripal is a farmer who could barely sustain even the family’s most basic needs. To meet the financial needs, he opened a small grocery shop in his village. Though his parents have not studied much, they understand the value of education and always encourage him to study. Being the only son of his parents, every day his father used to lift him in his arm to attend the school as he could not manage himself to walk. When he was in seventh standard, his father took him to a Hospital for an operation that has allowed him to walk on his own. Dillip is a determined person and is also having many
hidden talents. He has the talent of writing and composing music. Once he composed music for DB Tech and presented the same in Parent Meeting which was appreciated by many participants. “Whenever I see anything different from the common phenomenon, I get involved to learn or to know that,” says Dillip. His mother is looking forward for his marriage but his father wants him to marry only after he becomes independent. Dillip came to know about DB Tech from one of his schoolmate. He preferred to join the vocational training program instead of sitting idle at home. Sharing his intention of enrolling the program, he said, “With the hope that DB Tech will show me the right path and will give me a life time opportunity, I enrolled in the Sales & Marketing course, which is absolutely free in every aspect.” Being a residential program, he resided in DB Tech hostel with his friends. His keenness in the subject promptly made him all trainers' favorite. After few days, he became a unanimous leader to all. After the training hours, he always gathers his friends for recreational activities in the evening. “Spelling errors were his setback. Dillip always take my guidance to rectify and spend nights to tame the difficulty. During ITeS class, his eyes would beam with hope,” says Mr Surath Jena (Trainer-Support Domain, DB Tech, Sonepur). Finding some leisure hours he used to spend in the Computer Facility Centre to learn MS Office. Dillip says, “I was happy and amazed to see that the trainers are constantly encouraging me to learn more and even more.” After course completion when his batch mates were facing job interviews at different shopping malls, his trainer was looking for a right place for him keeping his physical abilities in mind. After few days, he was selected by Aegis BPO as Customer Service Executive at a salary of Rs. 7500 with accommodation. Keeping his ability and performance in mind, his employer gifted a 3-wheeler scooty to Dillip. Regarding his success, Dillip said “I am quite thankful to my trainers at DB Tech, they could have provided me a job related to my domain but they have valued my passion to work in a BPO. My life has got meaning today.”
Learning beyond Workstation Out Bound Training for DB Tech Employees at National Office The Learning and Development department organised an outbound training program for National Office staff members to offer some learning beyond workstation. The outbound, which was set in Leadership Training and Team Building Training format, was conducted at Himalayan Ecolodges (Sursinghdhar, New Teri Lake, Uttarakhand) on October 24 - 26, 2013. With stunning views of the Nanda Devi, India’s second highest Himalayan peaks and the emerald waters of the Tehri Lake coupled with the cool weather which is a perfect base for adventures training. The OBT is organized by Great Indian Outdoors (GIO). Mr Tamal Bhatia (Chief Facilitator, Great Indian Outdoors) was the resource person for the outbound training. Great Indian Outdoors (GIO) is one of the fastest growing Outdoor Recreation and Adventure companies in India. With nature friendly practices and community development integrated into its operations, GIO has established itself as a trusted, high quality travel company and enjoys enormous good will among its customers. Helpful concepts of action and experiential learning were used as a learning tool in the outbound training program. The activities were consistently helping participants gain immediate and powerful insight into their own and their team’s work styles and behaviour. One of the most unique aspects of outbound training was that the participants were immediately able to see the consequences of wrong actions and can see the tangible difference that can be made by a change in thinking and behaviour. the outbound program, participants were made to go through various outdoor activities where they were required to face challenging situations as individuals and as teams. This helped them notice the importance of communication, leadership, teamwork, planning and delegation. Trained facilitators actively helped them to extrapolate the learning from these outdoor activities to their workplace. Many consider outbound training as one of the best platforms for personality development, confidence building and team building. Through the testimonials received from participants, it can firmly said that Outbound training is an effective program for every employee and should be an element of an organization’s annual training program. Outbound training program entail use of soft adventure activities and management games to develop various themes such as leadership skills, conflict management, communication and teamwork in a group of people. The outcomes of the workshop were team bonding and taking the extra edge @ work. This training programme aims to take executives, out of the comfort zone of their normal office environment that is out of doors to participate in some specially designed outdoor exercises and management games. The areas of emphasis of the activities/games were team building, team working, leadership skills, creative problem solving, interpersonal communication and group Interaction.
