These projects have impacted upon approximately 1000 residents. l As part of the Club Durham support scheme £27,085 revenue funding and £216,600 capital investment was secured to improve club facilities in this area. l 8 organisations engaged in ‘Sportivate’ to provide opportunities for 296 young people aged 14-25 that are new to sport, receiving a total of £19,736 - 19% of the total county wide investment.
High quality recognition l Sedgefield were successful in 3 catagories at the County Durham Sport and Physical Activity Awards.
Key Observations: l Local strategic priorities focus on the provision of activity for children and young people. l There is a wealth of green space available for public use, such as Hardwick Park, the Castle Eden Walkway, etc. l There are pockets of very low participation in sport and physical activity, which does not correlate to the availability of facilities or opportunities to be active, suggesting that a more tailored approach is needed. l A high proportion of residents within the Sedgefield population live within deprived wards and the percentage of obesity within adults is also high. There is therefore a correlation between social demographic and sports participation levels, reflective of Sport England market segmentation models.
Local Demand for Sport and Physical Activity Current participation in sport and physical activity is not consistent across the patch (see Table 1), nor are the area’s demographics. Sport England’s market segmentation helps us understand the life stages and attitudes of different population groups and the sporting interventions most likely to engage them. The most dominant market segments within Sedgefield are Elsie & Arnold, Brenda and Kev, (who tend to be least active), and Philip and Tim (who tend to be most active). There is correlation between the distribution of these segments, deprivation and activity levels, which fluctuate considerably from area to area, (although overall participation in sport and physical activity is lower than county average across most of the patch). Table 1 highlights participation levels and the sports most likely to engage the various groups.
