gala theatre & cinema
Summer 2015
WELCOME This July sees the first of Durham’s big three festivals of the year. With the kind support of Arts Council England, we are able to present three outstanding worldclass festivals in Durham. Each draws in visitors and artists from across the region, the country and abroad. Durham residents mix with visitors to the city for three very different cultural experiences. Later in the year, we have the Durham Book Festival and the return of Lumiere, bringing art and light to our historic city. But first up is BRASS, celebrating all things brass-related from the traditional bands of our region, to some unique international collaborations and participatory events. Gala is proud to be a focal point for much of the festival activity, and we look forward to welcoming you to the venue.

BENNY GOODMAN & GLENN MILLER AT CARNEGIE HALL 1939 A year after Benny’s triumphant Carnegie Hall 1938 debut, the King of Swing returned and this time he challenged the new kid on the block, Glenn Miller, who had a brand new sound and records selling in their millions. Both bands were out to impress and the result was one of the hardest hitting nights in swing history. Pete Long’s great orchestra recreates that fabulous night in New York featuring In The Mood, One O’Clock Jump, Little Brown Jug, The Sheik Of Araby, Pennsylvania 6-5000 and many more classics. Who won the match? Decide for yourself. Sunday 19 July, 1.00pm | £20 (£18 conc)

FUN LOVIN’ CRIMINALS From the cinematic rock of monster hit Scooby Snacks, to the chilled vibes of Love Unlimited, this New York trio have been rollin’ their own unique blend of hip-hop, blues, funk and rock vibes since 1993. The addition of some tongue-in-cheek gangsta humour from frontman Huey ensures that the FLCs continue to have a massive international live following. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the band’s first ever live shows in New York City and now, with the addition of a specially commissioned brass section, this adds another vibe to their already eclectic musical style.

BAFTA winner and Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays, directed by the National Theatre’s new Director Rufus Norris. Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a last, frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out. Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives. A cornerstone of English drama since the 15th century, it now explodes onto the stage in a startling production with words by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and movement by Javier De Frutos. Running time: 90 minutes. The best of British theatre broadcast live to the big screen at Gala.

A wronged father, and despised outsider, Shylock looks to exact the ultimate price for a deal sealed in blood. Polly Findlay directs Shakespeare’s uncompromising tragedy. After more than a decade of working in film and television on projects from Star Wars to Holby City, Hugh Quarshie returns to the RSC to play Othello, playing opposite Lucian Msmati (Game of Thrones) in the role of lago. Othello is the greatest general of his age - a fearsome warrior, loving husband and revered defender of Venice against its enemies. But he is also an outsider whose victories have created enemies of his own, men driven by prejudice and jealousy to destroy him. The best of British theatre broadcast live to the big screen at Gala.
THE SPOOKY MEN’S CHORALE From the Blue Mountains in Australia, the Spooky Men employ a devastating combination of immaculate musical sensibilities, cavernous vocal chords and extreme silliness to explore the paradoxes of latter day masculinity. Their repertoire is a rollercoaster tour of massive, hair-raising Georgian harmonies, immaculate ballads and vaudevillian nonsense. Formed in 2001, this will be the Spookies’ sixth visit to the UK, heralding a brand new album and a step-up in their supernova trajectory. Who knew that a random bunch of blokes could be this entertaining? “inspired - and a triumph” Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2

One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.
