Summer 2019

gala

Welcome

Gala Theatre Online

Traditionally in the theatre world, summer is the quietest time, with lots of venues choosing to go-dark for the period. But for Gala, summer is one of our busiest times, because as well as presenting some of the finest touring productions, we also play host to three world class festivals.

All of our shows are available to book online at www.galadurham.co.uk

BRASS is our outstanding festival of world-class brass music in the heart of Durham. Celebrating brass in all its forms, the festival draws visitors and artists from across the world for lively cultural experiences, which take place in venues across the city, and spill out onto the streets.

You can also find out the latest updates about our upcoming shows by ‘liking’ us on Facebook at facebook.com/galadurham or by following us on Twitter at twitter.com/galadurham or Instagram at Instagram/gala_durham

New for this year is Durham City Run Festival. The hugely popular Durham City 5K/10K event now forms just part of a whole weekend of running activity. With Paula Radcliffe hosting a brand new family running event, and a whole programme of talks, films and technical advice sessions, it will offer everything for the running fan.

COMEDY

THEATRE

Funny Bones Comedy Club All shows start at 7.45pm | £8.50 Our monthly dose of Friday night funnies returns with a mix of seasoned stand-ups and new comic talent. Fri 3 May With the confidence and swagger that you might expect of a North-West comedian at the very top of his game, MC Danny Deegan hosts the ever affable and quick-witted banter merchant, Dave Twentyman. Danny Sutcliffe, a festival regular known for his clever one-liners, and the insightful Tom Lawrinson will round off the night. Fri 7 June The guitar-posturing, electric tennis-racket playing chameleon of comedy, Pierre Hollins, tops the bill in June. Hollins will be joined by deadpan joker Patrick Draper, dark comedy from MC Francis Jenking and Linsey Santoro, who will recount tales of her misadventures in life in her trademark, Brummy, down-to-earth style. Fri 5 July Comedy veteran, Nik Coppin kicks off in true affable and energetic style. Expect daft, neurotic and musical comedy from Tom Taylor; musing on rabbits, her native Italians and diversity from Italian comedian Carla Pol; all joined by former professional rugby player come comedian, John Lebbon, who will MC this motley crew of comedic talent with his typical Northern charm. Fri 2 August A killer wit, no nonsense attitude with a delightfully saucy and spiky edge, headliner Karen Bayley is a comedic force to be reckoned with. Bayley will be joined by acclaimed jester Francis Garrity and two welsh stand-ups, the award-winning Simon Emanuel and MC Drew Taylor, hosting the night with sharp observational style.

Same Same Different By Naomi Summer Chan Saturday 4 May, 8.00pm | £12 (£10 concession) Same Same Different is inspired by Naomi’s own experiences as a transracial adoptee, having been adopted from Hong Kong in the 1980s into a white British family. This new verbatim play gives adoptees from all over the world the opportunity to share their stories in their own words and reveal what it’s like to grow up in a family and community who might look very different to themselves. Exploring what growing up in an adoptive family is like for an adoptee, how both nature and nurture influence identity, and what happens after the ‘happy ending’ of going home to your ‘forever family’.

Monday 6 to Saturday 11 May, 7.30pm (exc. Wednesday) (+1.00pm on Tuesday and Thursday, and 6.00pm on Wednesday) | £10 - £16 Three school leavers, Salty, Hobby and Gail decide to perform an end of term tribute about their time in secondary school. Telling the hilarious story of an idealistic new teacher in his perilous first days inside a local comprehensive school, their play is based on their own drama teacher who ignites their passion for the stage with his idealism and belief. This fast-moving and entertaining comedy is hugely evocative for anyone who has endured life at a modern secondary school. Teechers brings to life the school bully, feared by teachers and pupils alike; Barry, the kid who never brings his PE kit; and the Headmistress, whose main priority is the annual Gilbert and Sullivan production. The teachers are as ambivalent and mixed-up as the kids, and everyone’s counting down the days until they can get out. Following recent successes with Educating Rita, Talking Heads and Two, Gala are delighted to be bringing this witty and well observed play to the stage. John Godber is the third most performed playwright in the UK, behind William Shakespeare and Alan Ayckbourn, and best known for his observational comedy (Bouncers, Up n’ Under). Written in 1984 and first performed by the Hull Truck Theatre Company, Teechers is still thoroughly modern, and as fresh and relevant as when it was created. 03000 266 600 www.galadurham.co.uk

I Am Bolt (PG)

Skid Row Marathon (12A)

Friday 26 July, 5.00pm | £5

Saturday 27 July, 2.00pm | £5

Saturday 27 July, 5.00pm | £5

Today, all anybody needs to run is the determination and a pair of the right shoes. But just fifty years ago, running was viewed almost exclusively as the domain of elite male athletes who competed on tracks.

A unique film, following the sprinting legend as he prepares to go for gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Competing in the 100m and 200m races, Bolt attempts to make history by winning these events for a record third time. Mixing archival footage with present-day interviews, the Olympic champion and global icon opens up about his athletic legacy

When a criminal court judge starts a running club on LA’s notorious skid row and begins training a motley group of addicts and criminals to run marathons, lives begin to change. Following four runners as they rise from the mean streets of LA to run marathons around the world, fighting the pull of homelessness and addiction at every turn.

With insight and propulsive energy, director Pierre Morath traces running’s rise to the 1960s, examining how the liberation movements and newfound sense of personal freedom that defined the era, took the sport out of the stadiums and onto the streets, and how legends like Steve Prefontaine, Fred Lebow, and Kathrine Switzer redefined running as a populist phenomenon.

Their story is one of hope, friendship, and dignity. The film will be preceded by a short film exploring the transformative powers of running, including interviews with Olympic Gold medallist Jo Pavey, BBC’s Vassos Alexander and Sophie Raworth.

Mistaken identity and romance collide with cucumber sandwiches and a handbag in Oscar Wilde’s much loved comedy of manners. Jack loves Gwendolen. Algernon loves Cecily, though both ladies loved Ernest – much to the disapproval of the formidable Lady Bracknell. Unfortunately, Ernest doesn’t actually exist, and when his true identity is revealed, being earnest takes on a whole new meaning! A Gala Theatre and Durham Student Theatre Co-Production

Lord of the Flies By William Golding Adapted by Nigel Williams Directed by Annie Rigby Designed by Andrew Stephenson Monday 30 September - Saturday 5 October, 7.30pm (exc. Wednesday) (+1.00pm on Tuesday and Thursday, 6.00pm on Wednesday) | £10 - £16 A plane crashes on an uninhabited island and the only survivors, a group of school children, wait to be rescued. With no adult supervision, their freedom is something to celebrate; they can do anything they want. As they attempt to forge their own society, leaders are elected and splinter groups form. As order collapses, terror begins its reign and the children degenerate into savagery. William Golding gives the traditional adventure story an ironic, devastating twist. First published in 1954, Lord of the Flies is now recognised as a classic, and is a memorable tale about the end of innocence, and humankind’s intrinsic evil nature. Following Gala’s recent production of Two, we are delighted to be co-producing this dramatic and compelling tale exploring the dark side of humanity.

Illiberal Democracies? Hungary and Romania in Interwar Europe

The Story of Sacred Journey (The Legend of the City)

James Koranyi

Tuesday 25 June, 5.45pm

Monday 17 June, 5.45pm Since the emergence of self-styled illiberal democracies in east-central Europe, most prominently in Hungary and Poland, observers have noted that east-central European societies simply have no history of democracy to boast of and therefore revert to type. This talk questions that view and discovers another story.

Dr Brendan Quayle

Commissioned by Durham City Council, and originally screened in large scale 70mm format, Sacred Journey was produced by local film maker and writer Dr Brendan Quayle. Telling the story of St. Cuthbert and the birth of Durham, the film powerfully dramatises the legendary origins one of the country’s most fascinating cities. Here we present a screening of the film (22 mins) followed by Brendan discussing the origin of the film and its creation.
