WelcOMe Traditionally Gala’s busiest season, this autumn is more packed than ever before and we are proud to be bringing you some wonderfully creative and exciting events.
gala is…
The focus of our stage season is our pantomime, which is well into production, with loads of magic, fun and silliness, which we can’t wait to show you. We begin a new monthly season of lunchtime jazz concerts in our Studio, our new G:Film series of cinema events continues, a range of world class live events will be broadcast to the big screen in our main auditorium, and there are a whole host of theatre events for families to enjoy. Gala also plays host to Durham Book Festival; and we are also working with our friends at Theatre Hullabaloo to once again host Take Off, the festival of theatre for children and young people. And as if that weren’t enough, Gala play our part in helping Lumiere to light up Durham for four days in November. Don’t forget, while you are in the City, why not visit our friends at Durham’s other theatres, the Assembly Rooms and the City Theatre. There is much to be enjoyed, and I hope you will enjoy it with us. Robin Byers Programming & Operations Manager Gala Theatre
“For us, Gala is a fantastic local facility and a great place to spend time with the family. The friendly, relaxed atmosphere is second to none and there’s something on for everyone. The pantomime is always our favourite. We never miss it and book early to make sure we get our favourite seats”. The Shaw Family Regular Gala attenders

JaSOn / cavalli Loosely based on the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece, Cavalli’s opera was a runaway hit when it premiered in Venice in 1649, and proved one of the most popular operas of the 17th century. Witty, melodic and entertainingly decadent, this new production is directed by Ted Huffman and stars Hannah Pedley as Medea and Paula Sides as Isiphile. Sung in English

If you go down to the woods today… you’re sure of a fun-filled surprise. Gala is delighted to announce that our spectacular pantomime is the swashbuckling and rib-tickling story of Robin Hood. The Sherriff of Nottingham (Neil Armstrong) is running things while the King is away. He’s taxing everyone to their last penny and cancelling Christmas. To the rescue, swings Robin Hood (Gareth Leighton)… He’s robbing the rich to give to the poor, alongside his band of men - hilarious Will Scarlett (Paul Hartley) and greedy old Friar Tuck (Marcus Houden). With the Sherriff’s henchmen Stink (David Tarkenter) and Stench (Martyn Dempsey) causing havoc and daft Nurse Nellie (Alan French) trying to keep the King’s two children safe, it’s left to the beautiful Maid Marion (Emma Devlin) to add a bit of glamour to proceedings. With a spectacular sword fight finale as Robin and his brave band go hand to hand with the Sherriff and his baddies throughout the castle, this wonderful story is a delight. Created in the heart of Durham, Gala’s fabulous family pantomime comes complete with a terrific mix of mayhem and live music, laughter and surprises. Let Durham’s pantomime family make your festive season complete. Tickets are already selling well, so book early to avoid disappointment.

BiRDSOnG By Sebastian Faulks adapted by Rachel Wagstaff As the war breaks out over the idyll of his former life, young Englishman Stephen Wraysford must lead his men through the carnage of the Battle of the Somme, only comforted by the memory of his former lover as his world explodes around him. Celebrating Great Film Our regular series of special movie events, where old favourites and mainstream blockbusters rub shoulders, in a celebration of masterful movie making. Sunday 15 September | £10
The DaRk kniGhT TRilOGy Strap yourselves in, this is going to be a biggie. Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, presented back to back in one giant day of, what some are calling, the best superhero series of all time. Dark, imaginative and downright menacing, are you ready for Gotham’s warrior? 1.00pm 4.00pm 7.30pm
Batman Begins (12), 2005, 141 mins The Dark Knight (12), 2008, 152 mins Dark Knight Rises (12A), 2012, 165 mins
“superhero filmmaking on an unprecedented scale” empire Magazine Wednesday 2 October 7.30pm | £10 (£8 conc)
The GeneRal (u) 1926, 107 MinS Orson Welles said The General was ‘perhaps the greatest film ever made’. And he should know. Buster Keaton's legendary silent movie, with live action stunts that will have you clinging to your seat. To give the film an extra 21st century pizzazz, we are screening the film accompanied by a live music score performed by Simon Hanson (piano) and Ric Elsworth (percussion). Monday 28 October 3.00pm | £5
The WizaRD OF Oz (u) 1939, 103 MinS It’s half term, so you could look for some kids to bring to this old family favourite. But we know you love the chance to revel in the Technicolor glory of the masterpiece whatever your age. And it’ll be dark in the cinema, so no one will be able to see when you pop on your ruby slippers. Thursday 14 November 7.30pm | £7.50
ScaRFace (18) 1983, 170 MinS Not exactly the most subtle film ever made, but it’s an absolute cracker. Al Pacino’s role as Tony Montana is loved by gangsta rappers and film fans alike. This tale of greed among the Cuban drug cartels, is chock-full of guns, drugs and chainsaws and it’s incredibly stylish. With a free bottle of beer in with the ticket price, wallow in the excess of it all, and say hello to his little friend… Wednesday 18 December 7.30pm | £10
iT’S a WOnDeRFul liFe (u) 1946, 130 MinS Of course you’ve seen it a dozen times on the telly, but bask in the warmth of the festive season with the big screen experience. Cry? Me? No, I just had something in my eye!
