TINY FINGERS
LITTLE FINGERS
First adventures in music making for Nursery and EYFS
Developing musical skills at Key Stage 1
As a school without a music specialist we struggled to provide pupils with the rich hands-on experiences of music they needed. Durham Music Service has filled that gap in so many ways. The music teachers we work with are highly knowledgeable, experienced and have an excellent rapport with pupils and staff alike. A bespoke programme of support has enabled our pupils from Reception to Year 6 to access a range of skills, build on progression and develop a love of music. The Little Fingers programme of work has caught the imagination of pupils in Early Years and Key Stage 1. Pupils in Key Stage 2 have weekly sessions with an imaginative and popular singing teacher who plans, assesses and supports teachers. A high energy term of Samba and African drumming per class has seen pupils with no previous interest in music come to life when exploring the vibrant rhythms and beat. A first class service - thank you. Joanne Shaw, Head Teacher, Catchgate Primary School

TINY AND LITTLE FINGERS PROGRAMMES AND WORKSHOPS FOR EYFS & KS1 Our youngest learners love to learn through music! Our Tiny and Little Fingers Programmes enhance the curriculum whilst developing fundamental musical skills from an early age. Workshops can also be used as a method for learning about numeracy, literacy, science and a range of topics in a fun and accessible way. Schools also love the way our programmes build confidence in their own staff’s understanding and confidence in using music as a learning tool (CPD support is available, see page 11). Our programmes for younger learners underpin the National Curriculum for Music. When studying music, children should: Use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes Play tuned and un-tuned instruments musically Listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music Experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music

Next steps after First Access. Bespoke routes that best suit the needs of your pupils
The support of Durham Music Service has enabled us to ensure that music is an integral part of our curriculum and that every pupil has the opportunity to learn to play an instrument. Our access to the ‘First Access’ programme, means that Year 3 are introduced to the key ideas of pulse, dynamics and musical notation through weekly lessons, delivered by a skilled specialist. In Year 4, our pupils develop and deepen these skills, through becoming a class orchestra, learning to play both a brass instrument and stringed instrument during the year. This provides an excellent foundation for upper Key Stage 2 pupils, wishing to continue music tuition. For these pupils, as for those children receiving whole class tuition, the music provision provides increased engagement, creativity and a sense of responsibility and achievement. Regular performances, in front of other pupils and parents, encourage our pupils to work together and commit to a learning goal. Their sense of accomplishment upon performing is tangible. Natalie Ruddell Music Co-ordinator, Cotsford Junior School
