WelcOMe Entertainment. That’s what we always aim to provide at Gala. Sometimes it may be a moving drama, at other times it may be the latest stand-up comedy, but on our cinema screens and our theatre stage, we hope we always manage to entertain you. No one sums up the spirit of entertainment as well as Eric Morecambe. From his beginnings as a child star to huge stardom, his was a life dedicated to entertaining. Over 28 million people watched the Morecambe & Wise Christmas Show of 1977, which was incredibly, more than half the population of the UK. We celebrate the great man’s life with a new production entitled Morecambe. So subtle and convincing is his characterisation, that star of the show Bob Golding could have been born to play Eric. That the Associate Producer is Eric’s son Gary also speak volumes about the quality of the show. Moving, funny and hugely entertaining, I urge you to join us for this terrific piece of theatre. Don’t forget, while you are in the City, why not visit our friends at Durham’s other theatres, the Assembly Rooms and the City Theatre. There is much to be enjoyed, and I hope you will enjoy it with us.

laWRence OF aRaBia (PG) The word epic could have been coined for this movie. Huge in scale, David Lean’s film about the flamboyant British military figure during his World War I service in Arabia was a winner of seven Oscars. From the days when actors really were movie stars: Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness and Omar Sharif all feature in this mighty movie, which looks simply stunning in this glorious new digital print. ThelMa & lOuiSe (15) Making a stand for Girl Power years before the Spice Girls, this weary Arkansas pair escape their oppressive lives and go on the run. Fire up the '66 Thunderbird and join Geena and Susan on their cross country chase. Of course you know the ending, but it’s still utterly compelling and inspiring after all these years. About friendship, freedom and the cowboy spirit... this looks great on the big screen, and it’s a chance to whoop as the pair head for the Grand Canyon. Sunday 31 August, 3.00pm | £5
