Welcome

Gala Theatre Online

We’ve been talking cow costumes, magic beans and giants in recent weeks at the Gala Theatre which means it’s panto season.

All of our shows are available to book online at www.galadurham.co.uk - you can even select your own seat when purchasing your tickets. You can also find out the latest updates from our upcoming shows by ‘liking’ us on Facebook at facebook.com/ galadurham or by following us on Twitter at twitter.com/galadurham.

After last year’s production of Cinderella became the most successful show in our theatre’s history, we knew that Neil Armstrong and Paul Hartley had struck a chord with our audiences, so it’s great to have them on board once more to write and direct. Over 14,000 people have already booked their tickets, and with a script and cast in place, we are all working together to ensure this year’s pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, is another show to remember. Rehearsals are also set to begin on our other in-house production of the season The Fighting Bradfords. As part of the Durham Remembers programme of events commemorating The Battle of the Somme, the play will bring the story of the four Bradford brothers to life, from their upbringing in Witton Park, Bishop Auckland to their experiences fighting in the First World War. We’re sure our regular audiences will enjoy the play, but we’re also keen to entice new audiences too, so we’ve a ‘Pay What You Like’ performance of The Fighting Bradfords which means you can call our Box Office and pay whatever you want before seeing the show. We hope to see you there.

Thursday 8 to Saturday 17 September, 7.30pm (+2.30pm on Wednesday 14 and Saturday 17) | £15 (£13 concession), £12 Gala Members. £12 opening night and matinee performances The most celebrated brothers in British military service, the Bradfords were County Durham’s own. Drawing on first-hand accounts, correspondence and family anecdotes, a brand new play tells the story of this highly decorated family of First World War soldiers: Roland the born leader and a natural soldier; George, who heroically volunteers for a seemingly suicidal mission; James who joins the war under pressure from his brothers; and the eldest brother, and only survivor, Thomas. Influenced by a domineering father and artistic mother, the boys’ childhood was filled with imaginative role playing and intensely competitive sport. They were bare-knuckle boxers and lovers of poetry, strong soldiers and accomplished musicians, but above all else they were selflessly brave in their determination to play the game, whatever the cost. The Fighting Bradfords explores what drove this remarkable family from County Durham to become national as well as very local heroes. Tuesday 4 October, 7.30pm | £18.50

Friday 30 September, 7.30pm | SOLD OUT

Saturday 1 October, 7.30pm | £16, £15 Gala Members

The American, Grammy-nominated vocalist, Stacey Kent, comes to Durham with a brand new concert, featuring music from her latest album Tenderly. Tenderly sees Stacey return to familiar ground with her first album of standards and jazz-classics since the release of her breakthrough album of 2003, The Boy Next Door - featuring tracks such as The Very Thought of You, Tangerine, In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning and Embraceable You.

German Comedy Ambassador Henning Wehn presents an evening of Teutonic jolliness at its best. After his last show tackled those wellknown staples of light entertainment that are the British obsession with home ownership and the self-serving nature of most fundraising efforts, this time Henning’s having an unbiased look at immigration. He also wonders, if, generally speaking, people are competent. Luckily in his case this doesn’t matter as either he’s funny or he lives up to a national stereotype. It’s a win-win situation.

The spectacularly surreal Pajama Men have won acclaim across the globe, and the shapeshifting double act come to Durham with a live, comic existential meltdown that takes place as two comedians attempt to stage an epic, historical, romance novel in under an hour. “Without props and costumes, but with expert skill and an impish sense of fun, the Pajama Men create a cartoon of the mind – a shape-shifting world in which anything seems not just possible, but imminent.” HHHHH The Guardian

“Stacey Kent has been quietly sitting on top of the world of jazz vocals, for many years.” Jamie Cullum

Why The Long Face?

Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 October, 7.30pm | £10 (£8 concession)

One of Britain’s finest comedians and broadcasters, Marcus’s talent was noted early on in his career in 1996 when he won the BBC New Comedian Award at the Edinburgh Festival. He is now regarded as a major comedy, writing and acting talent, performing stand up nationally to sell out audiences around the UK and globally at international comedy festivals.

Wednesday 5 October, 8.00pm | £20 In his 60 years on this planet, comedy writer and performer Andy Hamilton has experienced many changes. For instance, he was once a 6’4” tall professional basketball player, until a tree fell on him. But, of course, change is an inescapable part of the human condition. Some changes are good, some bad. Why can’t they be more clearly labelled? How did we end up working longer hours? Where did all the sparrows go? If you’re feeling flustered because of flux, Andy will teach you how to cope with the changes we have seen and the changes yet to come. 10

With songs by Schonberg & Boublil (Les Miserables), Miss Saigon has been a huge audience favourite since it first hit the UK stage with two successful West End runs. This year sees the musical celebrate its 25th anniversary with a special one-off performance that will be shown on the big screen at the Gala Theatre featuring many of the original cast (including Olivier & Tony Award winners Jonathan Pryce and Lea Salonga) who will return to the stage to celebrate the long-running hit.

Jeremy Hardy is in his 4th decade as a standup this year. That’s a more dramatic way of saying he started 32 years ago and, without a lottery win, probably has at least another 32 years to go. Jeremy has been heard in ten series of Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation and in appearances on The News Quiz and I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue on BBC Radio 4, as well as seen on QI and Grumpy Old Men. “In an ideal world, Jeremy Hardy would be extremely famous, but an ideal world would leave him without most of his best material.” The Guardian

In this unique show, Ray Laidlaw and Billy Mitchell perform a string of Lindisfarne’s most unforgettable songs including Lady Eleanor, Meet Me On The Corner, Fog On The Tyne, Run For Home and more, and share first-hand the story of the band behind them.

Doug and the late Dougal Haston’s first ascent of the Everest’s massive South West Face remains one of the most significant climbs in mountaineering history. In this special lecture lavishly illustrated with his celebrated mountain photography and coinciding with the publication of his long-awaited autobiography, Doug will tell of the epic expedition and climb, how his life led up to this defining moment and where it took him upon his return from the summit.

Something From Everything

Thursday 3 November, 7.30pm | £16

A performer like no other, Martyn is a jaw dropping guitar player who has developed a unique percussive style. Teamed up with a powerful show stopping voice, he and has been called “The Welsh Springsteen”, but there are also shades of John Mayer, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews. He does however stand in his own right, built on a reputation for giving what thousands have described as the best live music experience of their lives.

Saturday 5 November, 7.30pm | £17.50

Having toured theatres across the country for over 10 years now, best-selling and awardwinning author, radio and TV personality Gervase Phinn really is at his best and most exciting in front of a live audience. With his keen ear for the absurd and a sharp eye for the ludicrous, Gervase’s acclaimed show will see him share his hilarious and sometimes poignant tales of life as a schools inspector in the Yorkshire Dales.

Midge Ure has a career that spans over 40 years – from his ‘pop band’ beginnings, ‘almost’ joining the Sex Pistols, the electronic groundbreaking work with Visage, via the mainstream success of Ultravox to the twists and turns of his solo releases. Something From Everything touches on the broad reach of his recorded output, covering at least one song from every album he has released, and will appeal to both the hit-conscious customer and the long term fan looking for something unusual played live with all the usual commitment.

OPERA

Baroque opera from Venice £26 (£24.50 concession), £23 Gala Members, £10 restricted view A £45 double ticket offer is available when booking for both Xerxes and Ulysses’ Homecoming

Xerxes Monday 14 November, 7.30pm One of ETO’s most warm-hearted and humorous productions of recent years was Xerxes, which saw Handel’s astonishing setting of a Venetian text relocated to the Battle of Britain, with the Persian king recast as a glamorous prince-turned-pilot jealous of his brother’s stronger sex appeal. The score is absolutely Handel at his best, sometimes fiery and even explosive, at other times deeply touching. Julia Riley, Clint van der Linde, Laura Mitchell and Andrew Slater return in their original roles, with Peter Brathwaite and Galina Averina in her company debut, and Jonathan Peter Kenny directing the spitfire brilliance of the Old Street Band. Revival, sung in English with subtitles.

Ulysses’ Homecoming Tuesday 15 November, 7.30pm One of the certain masterpieces of Venice’s glory days is Monteverdi’s crowning achievement Ulysses’ Homecoming, recounting the delicate interplay between gods and men when, long after the end of the disastrous Trojan war, Ulysses is reunited with his wife Penelope. James Conway’s new production, designed by Greek designer takis (Ottone, Life on the Moon) will feature Benedict Nelson and Carolyn Dobbin in these central roles, Nick Pritchard as their son Telemachus, and Katie Bray as the feisty goddess Minerva.
