Summer 2016

gala

Welcome This year marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, and we’re honoured to be part of Durham Remembers, a programme of events and exhibitions that remembers the bravery and sacrifice of Durham men and women. In July, our auditorium will be transformed as we invite you to go back in time and experience life for a new recruit in 1916, with our brand new immersive experience 1916: No Turning Back. We’re also in the process of developing a new play to commemorate the centenary. The Fighting Bradfords, which will premiere at Gala in September, tells the story of this highly decorated family of First World War soldiers from Witton Park, Bishop Auckland. Selflessly brave, they were Durham’s own heroes. And the commemorative events at Gala conclude in November with a screening of The Battle of the Somme. Filmed at the actual battle in 1916, the film will be accompanied by music performed by the Durham University Symphony Orchestra. We hope you can join us to help commemorate this most poignant of anniversaries with a series of fascinating and moving events.

The Fighting Bradfords

The Battle of the Somme

By Carina Rodney. Directed by Psyche Stott

Thursday 8 to Saturday 17 September, 7.30pm (+2.30pm on Wednesday 14 and Saturday 17) | £15 (£13 concession), £12 Gala Friends. Pay What You Like on Monday 12 September

Friday 4 November, 1.30pm and 7.30pm | £10 (£8 concession), £7 Gala Friends

The most celebrated brothers in British military service, the Bradfords were County Durham’s own. Drawing on first-hand accounts, correspondence and family anecdotes, a brand new play tells the story of this highly decorated family of First World War soldiers: Roland the born leader and a natural soldier; George, who heroically volunteers for a seemingly suicidal mission; James who joins the war under pressure from his brothers; and the eldest brother, and only survivor, Thomas. Influenced by a domineering father and artistic mother, the boys’ childhood was filled with imaginative role playing and intensely competitive sport. They were bare-knuckle boxers and lovers of poetry, strong soldiers and accomplished musicians, but above all else they were selflessly brave in their determination to play the game, whatever the cost.

Filmed in 1916 at the actual battle, the film The Battle of the Somme remains one of the most successful films ever made. In 1916 it was seen by over half the adult population of the UK, and remains the source of many of the most iconic images of First World War. The 74 minute documentary has been painstaking restored frame by frame, and as part of an international project to mark the 100th anniversary, there will be 100 screenings taking place across the world. Each performance will be accompanied by a musical score commissioned by the Imperial War Museum and written by UK composer Laura Rossi. The live orchestral performance at Gala will be performed by the Durham University Symphony Orchestra. With deeply affecting footage accompanied by a poignant score, this promises to be a memorable evening to mark a significant moment in history.

The Fighting Bradfords explores what drove this remarkable family from County Durham to become national as well as very local heroes.

DANCE

Gary Clarke Company: Coal Thursday 10 to Friday 11 November, 7.30pm | £15 (£13 concession), £12 Gala Friends Marking the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1984/85 British Miner’s Strike, award winning choreographer Gary Clarke proudly presents Coal, a riveting dance theatre show which takes a nostalgic look at the hard hitting realities of life at the coal face. Strong, powerful and emotive, Coal explores the darker underbelly of the mining industry unearthing true nature and body wrecking demands of a working class industry now almost forgotten. The piece is an emotional, moving and ever relevant exploration of community, solidarity and survival. 03000 266 600 www.galadurham.co.uk
