As well as presenting the very best touring work on Gala’s stage, we are proud to be able to say that we are also creating great theatre in the heart of Durham.

With actors and a creative professionals drawn from the region, we aim to celebrate North East talent, and make work which is rooted in our region. This season, we have three productions, which are a great showcase for the work we create. Lord of The Flies, is our first co-production with Durham Student Theatre. With a full professional production, and actors drawn from the talented body of students at Durham University, we’re really excited to be bringing this classic to the stage. One More Sleep, is for our very smallest theatre-goers. This under 5s Christmas show has built a real following over recent years, and for many, is their first introduction to the magic of theatre. And of course, our hugely popular pantomime, which we have produced at Gala for the last 12 years, and is seen by in excess of 30,000 people each year. We think we have built a show which our audiences love, and it’s that passion that drives us each year to be bigger and better. I hope you will see if we have achieved that with this year’s Aladdin. Alongside this, we have our own Gala Big Band, and our new choir, the Gala Singers is just starting to build in stature. Gala offers a place to present, create, and engage in the very best of culture. We look forward to seeing you.

Thursday 5 September, 7.00pm | £15 (£13 concession), £10 Gala Members A spectacular, breath-taking, high-tech musical production based on the Tolstoy masterpiece. The dramatic and tumultuous love story between the married Anna and a dashing military officer takes place amidst the luxury of the Russian nobility in the second half of the 19th century. The characters struggle with overwhelming love and betrayal, passion and duty, hope and desperation. In Russian with English subtitles.
Thursday 5 September, 7.30pm | £15 (£13 concession) £12 Gala Members An uplifting family saga about a miner’s son who resolves to fight the profiteering that killed so many through underground accidents and starvation. This classic 30s novel set in the North East exploring the life of young Davie Fenwick as he strives to gain decent wages and conditions for the pitmen. Northern Monkey Brass Band Friday 6 September This band are a deeply funky collective of some of the finest drum and brass players in the North East. Inspired by Rebirth Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Youngblood Brass Band to name a few (as well as that bit at the beginning of Live And Let Die), they formed at the beginning of 2009. The band have rapidly earned a reputation for lively, energetic shows featuring original, the classics of the New Orleans and well known covers.
Riviera Quartet Friday 11 October Described as creating, ‘a sound one can absolutely luxuriate in’, this Newcastle based Riviera Quartet capture the essence of early 1960s Dizzy Gillespie/Lalo Schifrin on the French Riviera, with original compositions that draw as much from AC Jobim as they do from Horace Silver, but with a contemporary twist.
Greg Abate and Paul Edis 8 November International recording artist Greg Abate is a jazz saxophonist, flutist and composer. In the mid1970s Greg played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra, before forming Channel One, a hit group in the New England style. He then played in the Artie Shaw Orchestra under leadership of Dick Johnson. Paul Edis is a familiar face to Gala audiences and regularly collaborates with touring soloists as well as leading his own groups, writing and teaching music.

6 December Kyriaki Pantelidou is a recent graduate of the BMus Jazz, Popular and Commercial Music degree at Sage, Gateshead. A vocalist with an immense technical and expressive range, Kyra joins guitarist Bradley Johnston to perform music that takes the audience on a journey across the Mediterranean, including songs sung in French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, English and Greek.

Funny Bones Comedy Club All shows start at 7.45pm | £9 Our monthly dose of Friday night funnies returns with a mix of seasoned stand-ups and new comic talent. Friday 6 September Featuring Sam Harland’s unique, observational humour, drawn from his working-class roots, alongside Peter Phillipson who’s command of accents, whilst wearing his comedy heart on his sleeve, leaves the audience in hysterics, with Nick Crooks who is the new kid on the block and a typical Yorkshire lad, down to earth and charming. Whilst host MC Rob Coleman is becoming increasingly grumpy with his comedy focusing on (amongst other things) politeness and getting old. Friday 11 October Joe Bromehead is energetic, quick witted and naturally funny making him a solid addition to any bill, with Matt Stellingwerf the fast-rising star on the international scene, finding the humour in topics such as love, mental illness, sex, drugs and serial killers. Keith Wild is the wild by name, wild by nature comedy musician and compere MC Jim Bayes is a frustrated Yorkshire man with a knack for being funny. Friday 22 November Vince Atta is nothing less than a phenomenon, using a multi-track looper to create live on-thespot Hip-Hop/Reggae/Techno/ hilariously fusing it with natural stand-up, together with Rahul Kohli the self-styled Newcastle Brown Male, who has appeared on the BBC’s Big Asian Comedy Night. Miserable beyond his years Chris Copestake has hysterical stories and is Grimsby’s best export since the fish finger. Geordie MC Lee Kyle is in charge of proceedings, which should add a madcap energy to the evening. Line up may be subject to change.
Classic Cinema Studio First Sunday of every month, 6.00pm | £5 Kick off the start of every month at Gala, as we screen classic films in our revamped Studio space. It’s a relaxed environment to watch your favourite flicks, with our bar open throughout for you to buy alcoholic tipples and snacks. Benjamin Zephaniah The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah Friday 6 September, 7.30pm | £18 (£15 concession) He befriended Nelson Mandela, fought in the 1980s race riots and recorded radical reggae music with Bob Marley’s former band. Benjamin was unable to read and write at school but became one of Britain’s most remarkable poets. Now he’s back with his first tour in eight years, which coincides with his remarkable autobiography, The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah. In a compelling and inspiring show, Zephaniah will explain how he fought injustice and discrimination to lead a remarkable life. 6

Tuesday 10 September | 7.30pm | £22 Anthropologist, author and broadcaster Professor Alice Roberts has been delving into Britain’s past, and making archaeology programmes, for nearly twenty years. Alice joined Time Team as a bone expert before going on to BBC Two’s highly popular Coast, then The Celts, as well as seven series of Digging for Britain, followed by Britain’s Most Historic Towns on Channel 4. Alice will share insights, anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories from her personal journey to explore Britain’s past, concluding with a 20 minute Q&A.
The wait is over….The Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s highly anticipated sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, is revealed. The momentous literary event will be celebrated with an exclusive live cinema broadcast, with an evening with the Canadian novelist, poet, literary critic and inventor. Atwood will be interviewed by Samira Ahmed in a conversation spanning the length of Atwood’s remarkable career, her diverse range of works, and why she has returned to her seminal handmaid story, 34 years later.

With no adult supervision, their freedom is something to celebrate; they can do anything they want. As they attempt to forge their own society, leaders are elected and splinter groups form. As order collapses, terror begins its reign and the children degenerate into savagery. William Golding gives the traditional adventure story an ironic, devastating twist. First published in 1954, Lord of the Flies is now recognised as a classic, and is a memorable tale about the end of innocence, and humankind’s intrinsic evil nature. This is an improvised comedy play starring a cast of the country’s quickest comic performers. Every single show the cast conjures up a brand new ‘lost’ Jane Austen novel based on nothing more than a title suggested by the audience. The show comes fresh from six sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe, a weekly residency in London’s West End and a BBC Radio 4 special to mark the bicentenary of Austen’s death. For the characters Belmonte and Konstanze, Mozart wrote his most passionate music; for their servants, Pedrillo and Blonde, he wrote his wittiest. Mozart up-ends all possible stereotyping in his singspiel. The Silver Lake - A Winter’s Tale Saturday 19 October, 7.30pm The Silver Lake - A Winter’s Tale (Der Silbersee), Kurt Weill’s collaboration with the playwright Georg Kaiser, was closed down by the Nazi authorities in 1933 and it was not performed for many years. For many, it is his masterpiece. This is a piece about those who are left behind - a poor man driven to steal a pineapple, a poor relation who is passed from house to house, a policeman with principles, and the starving people who at the very beginning of the show are busy burying Hunger itself.

These weekly classes enrich the lives of young people by developing their social and theatrical skills through professional standard performing arts activities. From 1 May, a £2 per transaction fee applies for online and phone bookings. Reservations are held for 3 days. Group bookings of 10+ must be paid two months before the show. Ticket Exchanges/Refunds Tickets may be exchanged for other performances (for a fee of £1 per ticket)
up to 24 hours before a performance, at the management’s discretion. Unless an event is cancelled, all tickets are non-refundable. By purchasing our tickets you agree that these can’t be re-sold for profit through any means. This will result in tickets being declared void. National Theatre Tokens are sold and redeemed at Gala. INFORMATION Latecomers will be seated at a suitable point in the performance, to minimise inconvenience to others. Access Gala has lifts to all levels and accessible toilets located throughout. Our Main Auditorium and both
cinemas have wheelchair spaces available. If using a wheelchair, please advise the Box Office when booking to ensure your seats/spaces are allocated accordingly. We request that our wheelchair-using patrons attend with an able-bodied companion whose ticket is free of charge. Guide Dogs are welcome in all parts of the theatre.
To make an accessible seat booking or for any access enquiries, please contact 03000 266 600 We operate the Sennheiser infrared amplification system in our Main Auditorium. Headsets for the hard of hearing are available at Box Office. Family Friendly Gala aspire to make all of our customers welcome, no matter how small and we really hope that our younger visitors become regulars at our theatre and cinema. In consideration of our audience and performers, we just ask that those under the age of 3 are only admitted to shows aimed at the very young. If in doubt, you can check with Box Office. For those under one year old, babes-in-arms tickets are available for selected shows. Find more information on our website about visiting Gala with your younger family members. Mothers & Babies Our café staff are trained to be aware of the needs of breast-feeding mothers, and we also have baby changing facilities on all levels. Smoking is not permitted anywhere within Gala. Travel There is parking on-site at Walkergate (DH1 1SQ), which is easily reached via the slip road under Milburngate Bridge or via Freeman Place. An evening tariff is available. Prince Bishops car park (DH1 3UJ) is also nearby. A list of all bus routes can be found on our website.
