gala

Welcome

Gala Theatre Online

As well as presenting the very best touring work on Gala’s stage, we are proud to be able to say that we are also creating great theatre in the heart of Durham.

All of our shows are available to book online at www.galadurham.co.uk

With actors and a creative professionals drawn from the region, we aim to celebrate North East talent, and make work which is rooted in our region. This season, we have three productions, which are a great showcase for the work we create. Lord of The Flies, is our first co-production with Durham Student Theatre. With a full professional production, and actors drawn from the talented body of students at Durham University, we’re really excited to be bringing this classic to the stage. One More Sleep, is for our very smallest theatre-goers. This under 5s Christmas show has built a real following over recent years, and for many, is their first introduction to the magic of theatre. And of course, our hugely popular pantomime, which we have produced at Gala for the last 12 years, and is seen by in excess of 30,000 people each year. We think we have built a show which our audiences love, and it’s that passion that drives us each year to be bigger and better. I hope you will see if we have achieved that with this year’s Aladdin. Alongside this, we have our own Gala Big Band, and our new choir, the Gala Singers is just starting to build in stature. Gala offers a place to present, create, and engage in the very best of culture. We look forward to seeing you.

You can also find out the latest updates about our upcoming shows by ‘liking’ us on Facebook at facebook.com/galadurham or by following us on Twitter at twitter.com/galadurham or Instagram at Instagram/gala_durham

The band have rapidly earned a reputation for lively, energetic shows featuring original, the classics of the New Orleans and well known covers.

Riviera Quartet Friday 11 October Described as creating, ‘a sound one can absolutely luxuriate in’, this Newcastle based Riviera Quartet capture the essence of early 1960s Dizzy Gillespie/Lalo Schifrin on the French Riviera, with original compositions that draw as much from AC Jobim as they do from Horace Silver, but with a contemporary twist.

Funny Bones Comedy Club All shows start at 7.45pm | £9 Our monthly dose of Friday night funnies returns with a mix of seasoned stand-ups and new comic talent. Friday 6 September Featuring Sam Harland’s unique, observational humour, drawn from his working-class roots, alongside Peter Phillipson who’s command of accents, whilst wearing his comedy heart on his sleeve, leaves the audience in hysterics, with Nick Crooks who is the new kid on the block and a typical Yorkshire lad, down to earth and charming. Whilst host MC Rob Coleman is becoming increasingly grumpy with his comedy focusing on (amongst other things) politeness and getting old. Friday 11 October Joe Bromehead is energetic, quick witted and naturally funny making him a solid addition to any bill, with Matt Stellingwerf the fast-rising star on the international scene, finding the humour in topics such as love, mental illness, sex, drugs and serial killers. Keith Wild is the wild by name, wild by nature comedy musician and compere MC Jim Bayes is a frustrated Yorkshire man with a knack for being funny. Friday 22 November Vince Atta is nothing less than a phenomenon, using a multi-track looper to create live on-thespot Hip-Hop/Reggae/Techno/ hilariously fusing it with natural stand-up, together with Rahul Kohli the self-styled Newcastle Brown Male, who has appeared on the BBC’s Big Asian Comedy Night. Miserable beyond his years Chris Copestake has hysterical stories and is Grimsby’s best export since the fish finger. Geordie MC Lee Kyle is in charge of proceedings, which should add a madcap energy to the evening. Line up may be subject to change.

Friday 18 October, 7.30pm With The Seraglio, Mozart was conscious of his Viennese audience’s fascination with all things eastern. Mozart up-ends all possible stereotyping in his singspiel. If you meet a more independent and assured maid than Blonde, maybe take cover; if you expect tyranny from everyone who frightens you, look closer at the Pasha.

From Billy Elliot to Close the Coalhouse Door, When the Boat Comes In to The Pitmen Painters. Now hear the songs and stories of… The Pitmen Poets.

Many of the Blues Band’s 21st century fans weren’t even born when these five virtuosos, already music industry veterans, decided to fly in the face of musical fashion in 1979 and form a band ‘just to play the blues’. No one could have predicted that, 40 years on, they’d still be dazzling audiences with their showmanship and virtuosity. About 20 albums and thousands of gigs later, they’ve earned a reputation around the world as one of the finest exponents of the blues tradition in all its forms.

Have you got any burning wildlife questions? BBC TV wildlife presenter of Animal Family and Me and cameraman Gordon Buchanan, has travelled the planet - from South America, Asia, Africa, Papua New Guinea, Russia and Alaska - and will definitely have some interesting answers! This is a show for any wildlife enthusiast who wants to enjoy the spell-binding stories of the natural world from a man who has experienced danger face to face.

In a world driven by greed, what do we truly value? Timon has it all - money, influence, friends. But when the money runs out, Timon soon finds her influence and friends have also gone. Left alone, she flees Athens to take refuge in the woods, cursing the city she once loved.

Neil was born to love Great Britain. During his 20 years travelling to every corner, and whilst filming BBC2’s Coast, he’s fallen in love all over again. From north to south, east to west it cradles astonishing beauty. The human story here is a million years old and counting.

Do We Need a Manhattan Project for Artificial Intelligence?

Monday 4 November, 5.45pm

Joe Martin

Historically, the Labour Party has accepted the existing institutions of the British state, attempting to use them for its own purposes. Why has it sought to work through institutions not of its own making, and now fundamentally corrupted by private, corporate interests? Does a return to public policy require a refashioning of a public realm once more?

34

Monday 11 November 5.45pm Since the crash programme to build nuclear weapons in the 1940s, it has often been suggested that major technical and scientific problems need their own Manhattan Projects. Recently, calls have come for a Manhattan Project for Artificial Intelligence. Why should this secret wartime project offer a good historical example for AI research to follow?

Temperance in the Town Hall Drink, and Popular Petitioning in Victorian Durham Richard Huzzey Tuesday 19 November 5.45pm Today, rival campaigns bombard MPs with e-petitions and e-mails, representing constituents’ views to Parliament. 150 years ago, residents of Durham met in the Town Hall - or local pubs - to have their say on national controversies, signing paper petitions as testimonials to the community’s voice. This talk reveals the battles between moral advocates of temperance and those defending traditional rights to a pint.

Stefano Cracolici

County Durham was surveyed in the 1950s-60s by two of the most celebrated writers on England’s buildings and places, Nikolaus Pevsner and Ian Nairn. Over half a century later, how well have their assessments endured?

The Bowes Museum is one of the jewels in County Durham’s crown. Those who care for and work with its collections discuss their work and share insights into its history and current activities.

Please note this event will be held in Durham Town Hall.

Monday 9 December, 5.45pm The Grand Tour had a tremendous impact on 18th and 19th century British identity. This lecture is structured as an artistic itinerary through the North-East looking for tangible traces of the Grand Tour, discernible at Alnwick Castle, Raby Castle, Rokeby Park among other places.
