WELCOME As you will see from this brochure, the programme at Gala is really busy. Last year we presented 364 live performances and over 2,500 cinema screenings at the venue. But the programme we present at Gala is just a small proportion of the cultural work we do right across County Durham. I’m really pleased that you are interested enough to be reading a copy of this brochure, but did you know about all of the other performing arts, visual arts and community arts work we offer; as well as all the major festivals and events the team deliver throughout each year? Durham Book Festival, BRASS, Bishop Auckland Food Festival, Lumiere, the Tour Series cycling event and more are all part of Durham County Council’s offer of Culture & Sport activities. To keep up-to-date with all the exciting work we offer in the County, visit the Durham County Council or specific festival websites, or sign-up to the mailing lists offered by each event. We look forward to seeing you at one of our events very soon.

BASED ON THE NOVEL JACK’S RETURN HOME BY TED LEWIS. ADAPTED BY TORBEN BETTS. Jack Carter is back home for the first time in years. He’s back to bury a brother who hated him, in a town he swore he was never going to see again. He’s back to find out who killed his brother, to pay debts and settle scores. As the local underworld closes ranks, Jack’s bosses back in London find out that Jack has had his fingers in the till, and other places they shouldn’t have been. Jack plays a deadly game of cat and mouse as everyone tries to Get Carter. Inspired by the classic noir of Raymond Chandler, by the freedom of Jazz and the coming of the 1960s, Ted Lewis’s novel is a classic of British crime fiction. Set in a hard and uncompromising world of 1960s Newcastle rife with crime, sex, gambling and violence, this dark and stylish new adaptation of the classic noir thriller tells the story made famous in Mike Hodge’s seminal film starring Michael Caine in the lead role. Age restriction: 16+. Please join us for a post-show discussion on Wednesday 13 April.
