Great days out

With summer stretching ahead, here are a few suggestions for fun days out. Magnificent Durham Cathedral dominates the Durham City skyline. Discover previously hidden spaces within the cathedral’s medieval monastic buildings with Open Treasure, a new world-class exhibition experience open from 23 July. See the 14th-century Monks’ Dormitory and the spectacular Great Kitchen, one of only two surviving monastic kitchens in the UK. A rolling exhibition programme will showcase treasures from the cathedral’s collections. Discover the stories behind this UNESCO World Heritage Site - which this year celebrates 30 years since becoming one of the first to be designated in the UK - at the World Heritage Site Visitor Centre.

8

Other enthralling visits include the Oriental Museum and also Palace Green Library which runs a series of exhibitions. Take a trip to the Vale of Durham where the county’s rich industrial heritage is brought to life at a number of attractions. Enjoy a tram ride back in time and experience the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of days gone by at Beamish - The Living Museum of the North. And it’s all aboard for Locomotion: the National Railway Museum at Shildon, where over 70 heritage rail vehicles are on display. Don’t miss the Flying Scotsman & The Shildon Shed Bash. See page 20.

Great days out Experience the great outdoors with a trip to the Durham Dales and North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Enjoy everything from a gentle walk to a challenging mountain bike ride at Hamsterley Forest, with its picnic spots, play areas and riverside trail, as well as Stick Man and Gruffalo’s Child activity trails. Visit High Force, one of England’s most impressive waterfalls. The woodland walk leads you to the sight of the River Tees suddenly dropping 21 metres over the Whin Sill rock into a plunge pool below. For family fun why not head to Hall Hill Farm? Or take a trip to Adventure Valley. With over 40 activities, attractions and shows, an adventure golf course, indoor playbarns and an animal farmyard, there’s plenty to see and do whatever the weather. 9

Just outside of the market town of Barnard Castle in the Durham Dales is The Bowes Museum, a stunning French-style chateau set in parkland, with an award-winning café. Be swept off your feet with its latest exhibition, Shoes: Pleasure and Pain. See page 22. And don’t miss nearby medieval Raby Castle, set within a 250-acre deer park with walled gardens.

Gala Theatre

The Gala Theatre, Durham will be transformed over the summer months to bring you an experience unlike any other.

1916: No Turning Back Thursday 21 July to Sunday 28 August 1916: No Turning Back sees audiences join Lt. Simon Taylor, an enthusiastic young officer, to be recruited to the Durham Light Infantry. The walkthrough experience takes audiences through training, before heading to the front line to hear relentless rain and intermittent rifle fire as they move into the trenches. As night falls, audiences enter the dimly lit trench bunker, before heading ‘over the top’ as dawn breaks. They will then learn the fate of the brave men who fought for their 12

country, seeing what it was like for those who lost, those who were wounded and those who returned home. A cast of live actors, special effects and projection brings this walkthrough experience to life, allowing you to see, hear and feel a Durham soldier’s journey to the front and back. This experience may not be suitable for small children. A £7.50, Con £6.50, F £22 Book online at www.galadurham.co.uk or call 03000 266 600.

The Fighting Bradfords Thursday 8 to Saturday 17 September Gala’s latest theatre production tells the story of the Bradfords from Witton Park, Bishop Auckland who became the most celebrated brothers in British military service. Drawing on first-hand accounts, correspondence and family anecdotes, a brand new play tells the story of this highly decorated family of First World War soldiers: Roland the born leader and a natural soldier; George, who heroically volunteers for a seemingly suicidal mission; James who joins

the war under pressure from his brothers; and the eldest brother, and only survivor, Thomas. Written by Carina Rodney and directed by Psyche Stott, The Fighting Bradfords explores what drove this remarkable family to become both local and national heroes. A £15, Con £13, Friends £12 Book online www.galadurham.co.uk or call 03000 266 600. There is also a special ‘pay what you like’ performance on Monday 12 September.
