GROUP EXERCISE Group exercise classes are a great way to stay active, have fun, and meet new people. We offer a variety of group exercise classes that change every semester based on popular demand and current trends. Popular classes include Zumba, SPINNING, Butts & Gus, Yoga, Pilates, Muscle Sculpt and more. All classes are 50 minutes unless otherwise indicated and our instructors are trained to teach all fitness levels by offering modifications for new participants and advanced progressions for conditioned athletes.

EVENTS Cycle Fit – Indoor cycling class that yields real results improving one’s endurance, strength, and cycling power. Ideal for those looking for an adventure and challenge. Dance Beatz – Dance fitness incorporates a variety of different rhythms into a fun and easy to follow cardio class. Very similar to other trade mark dance fitness classes. Muscle Sculpt – Tone, sculpt, and chisel your total body to feel energized and strong! This class will utilize equipment such as bands, body bars, dumbbells, and even your own body weight to transform your body into a new you.

Pilates – Lengthen all the muscles of the core in a series of matbased exercises. Designed to focus on the deep muscles of the abdominals, back, hips, and glutes, this class will also improve quality of movement, develop core postural muscles, stabilize the spine, promote good body mechanics as well as mental relaxation.

RIP – This barbell class features athletic movements such as squats, lunges, chest presses, bicep curls, and more. Routine is choreographed and utilizes a weight pyramid to allow the average participant, conditioned athlete, and seasoned lifter to work at their level. Spinning – It is a group cycling class. The instructor picks the type of ride for each class. Examples of possible classes include: o Fat Burner – Exercising at steady heart rates helps to build an aerobic base and burn fat. o Interval – Expect hills, humps, runs, flats, and climbs with varying intensity levels. This class is ideal for burning calories and pushing yourself to the next level. o Strength – Steady, consistent pedaling with heavy resistances to develop the lower body muscles and challenges the cardiovascular system to promote power. This class is ideal or becoming a stronger rider.


Synergy 360 – Advance your workout with a class that show results. The Synergy 360 class is a circuit workout which participants utilize a variety of equipment such as TRX, trampolines, monkey bars, kettle bells, medicine balls, balance trainers and more for a total body workout. Synergy 360 focuses on specific training goals such as stamina, strength, flexibility, and speed. Yoga – The art of yoga links breath and movement through heat building sequence of postures to stretch the body and provide stress reduction. Zumba is a fusion of Latin and International music and dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting, effective, fitness class. The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. Note: All group exercise classes are cancelled on university holidays, closings, and dead days. Also, group exercise classes will be cancelled for special events that are instructional (ie: Zumbathons, Wellness Retreat, etc).

WOMEN’S WORKOUT AREA Our Women’s Only Workout area is open exclusively to women in a private studio out of view from the main fitness floor. The Women’s Only Workout area features a large open studio, interchangeable weighted barbells, dumb bells, and more. This program provides an exciting opportunity for all members to participate together in sports and events during the Fall and Spring semesters. University Recreation encourages fair play, participation, lifelong learning, and opportunities for all.

ELEGIBILITY Intramural events are open to currently enrolled UTRGV students and UTRGV faculty/staff and alumni with an UREC membership. Their spouses are also eligible for intramural play, provided they also have a current UREC membership.

TEAMS & FREE AGENTS Form your own team with friends or register as a free agent. Free agents have three options (1) check the UREC website for a list of other eligible free agents and contact them about forming a team, (2) attend a captain’s meeting to find teams looking for players, or (3) wait for a team captain to contact them. Please note that UREC does not form teams for free agents.

SIGN UP & REGISTRATION Registration occurs through our online software “IM Leagues”, which allows users to register for events, view team’s schedules, brackets, and results. Entry fee must be paid before captain’s meeting or at the time of registration by each captain. Participants must register at: Edinburg: www.imleagues.com/utrgv. Provides a variety of opportunities for students to learn a new sport, network, live a healthy lifestyle and compete against other university clubs or varsity teams. Sport Club organizations meet regularly for practices, demonstrations, clinics, seminars, social activities and may compete regionally and nationally.

COMPETITION Sport Clubs bridge the gap between intramural and intercollegiate athletics by providing competition at specialized levels, participation in tournaments, and opportunities to practice.

Outdoors is a brand new program at UTRGV. The goal of outdoor programming is to give students the opportunities to participate in outdoor adventures in order to foster friendships, instill confident outdoor skills, provide opportunities for leadership development and promote an ethic of conservation and stewardship. We are pleased to provide an alternative fitness experience with our outdoor activities. If your idea of fun includes venturing off the beaten path, then UREC Outdoor Adventures program is for you! From clinics to day trips to educational courses and more, Outdoor Adventures has something for just about everyone. Building friendships, overcoming challenges, traveling to beautiful destinations, accomplishing goals, and obtaining new skills and knowledge is what the Outdoor Recreation Program is all about. We offer a variety of low-cost opportunities to experience and learn about enjoyable lifelong outdoor activities. We provide an opportunity for patrons to hone their climbing skills in a friendly and encouraging environment. In addition, we provide educational trainings, belay certifications and special events. We are committed to introducing students to many different types of outdoor activities in safe, hands-on, learning environments. Whether you choose to become involved with our climbing wall, adventure demos, trips, rentals or team-building programs, you will find very exciting opportunities to develop in a non-traditional setting.

CLIMBING WALL The Climbing Wall, offering 1,600 square feet of climbing space for bouldering, is located at the WRSC 1.202. To participate, climbers must have an active membership which includes the use of equipment. Hours can be found online or in the UREC schedule. The climbing wall is used for fitness, teaching, and recreation. It also offers students and members an opportunity to learn and hone their climbing skills in a friendly, encouraging, and experienced climbing environment. The 35-foot wall has a great deal of natural looking features along with handholds to assist climbers. There are five routes on the wall to accommodate novice and advanced climbers. Workshops on technique building and competitions are scheduled throughout the year. All climbers are required to sign an additional release waiver and a code of conduct prior to use.

BOULDERING Drop by any time the UREC is open to boulder and work on your strength and flexibility on our indoor Bouldering Wall. Please read and follow all posted rules. Boulders will be issued a pass for boulder wall use after signing a waiver and watching a safety video.


EDUCATIONAL CLIMBING WORSHOPS All classes will be held at the climbing wall. Climbing Risk Management - Understanding and managing risks in the high angle environment from the planning stage to safely back in your car Equipment - Maintenance, needs and limitations Knots and Rope Management - Understanding the difference between tying and knowing knots and rope systems Belay and Top Rope Anchors - Belaying and Top Rope Anchors in the sport climbing environment Bailing Out - Bailing out safely off a route. Which is the better option...transitions from lowering to climbing or from climbing to lowering? Self & Buddy Rescue for Sport Climbing - Escaping and taking over belays, mechanical advantages and passing knots Rock Climbing Equipment – climbing ropes, carabineers, harnesses, belay devices, climbing shoes, handholds, chalk bags, helmets. Climbing Skills – climbing hand positions, body positions, bouldering and spotting. Knots and Tying In – different kind of knots and the use/ purpose. Lead Climbing – Lead climbing, clipping, lead falling, lead belaying. Risk Management & Emergency Response – Intervening in unsafe behavior, belay takeovers, climber rescue.


BROWNSVILLE OVERNIGHT CAMPING TRIPS Want to get away from campus for a weekend or over a break? Our overnight trips cater to students wanting to escape the demands of school and spend some quality time with nature. Join us for weekend camping trips to nearby Texas State Parks, or weeklong trips to places like the Grand Canyon where we’ll hike, kayak, paddleboard, and more! *schedule

EQUIPMENT RENTALS Students, staff, and faculty can rent a variety of outdoor equipment from the Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex in Edinburg and Garza Gymnasium in Brownsville. We have everything from kayaks and paddleboards to everything you need for a weekend of camping.

VAQUEROS GUIDE TO SURVIVING THE GREAT OUTDOORS Every Wednesday from 3-4PM at Garza Gymnasium come learn about different survival techniques from the UREC Staff. Each week will feature a different activity and then we will repeat sessions monthly.

KAYAKING & PADDLEBOARDING

DAY TRIPS If you just want to get to experience some of the great opportunities close to our campuses our day trips are for you. Spend some time around South Padre Island seeing dolphins, sea turtles and everything the gulf coast region has to offer. *Schedule

Every Monday from 4-6PM come learn how to kayak and stand up paddleboard. If you’re a beginner the 1st and 3rd week of every months will take place in the TSC Rec Center Pool or Casa Bella Pool (TBD) nd the 2nd and 4th week of the month we will be paddling in the Resaca next to Garza Gymnasium (meet out front by the parking lot)

LEARN TO FISH 3-5PM on Tuesdays meet outside of Garza Gymnasium and we will be going to one of the resacas on campus to do some fishing. No experience necessary but you must bring your own equipment. Our UREC staff will teach you all you need to know, so come out and have some fun.

MONDAY MORNING JOGGING GROUP We all relax on weekends, so get your week started off right with our Monday morning jogging group. We will meet at 7AM outside of Garza Gymnasium every Monday to go on a 30 minute run (option to go longer if you want)

UREC STUDY BREAK *Come take a break between classes with University Recreation. Every Tuesday from 12:30-1:30 on the Student Union Lawn UREC will be hosting a UREC Study Break! Activities will include lawn games, and various sports like football, Frisbee, wiffleball etc.


Whether you are looking for a good workout or just want to relax with your friends, University Recreation Aquatics program offers recreation for individuals of all ages to enjoy. Our mission of Aquatics is to offer a wide variety of aquatics classes and opportunities to participate in organized events and open swim while maintaining a safe environment. Want to become a UREC Lifeguard, Learn How to Swim, improve your techniques in the water, or simply relax in one of our pools, UREC Aquatics is here to help! Come soak up the sun or swim some laps with us here at University Recreation. We invite you to come take advantage of everything our outdoor and indoor facilities offer. Swimming lessons, swim programs, and adapted aquatic lessons are offered to all ages by the Department of UREC. The program is designed to emphasize stroke and turn technical development in a fun and challenging environment.

PROGRAMS CPR/AED Training American Heart Association Heartsaver (Adult/Child CPR & AED Certification) Learn how to save a life. This course is hands on and lecture based. Students will learn how to recognize and respond to emergency situations, perform CPR, and use an AED. Certification is valid for 2 years. The course is normally about 2 hours but can vary based on number of students. Students must pay the course fee of $40.00 to successfully register and reserve their space in the class. Payment can be made during operational hours at the Member Services desk. Refunds will not be issued unless the department changes the date and/or time of the training. *Please note that this course is NOT the course required for Healthcare Professionals. The course required for Healthcare Providers is the American Heart Association Basic Life Support course. *This course is NOT the course required for Lifeguard CPR Certification. The course required for Lifeguard Certification is American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Group Exercise

Belay Certification The Top Rope Belay Certification is an instructional course that teaches the required skills and knowledge to belay climbers on top rope at the climbing wall. Individuals must demonstrate proper technical skills and safety knowledge in the two day class.Skills that will be taught are the proper belay technique using an aperture ATC belay device, climbing commands, fit and use of a standard seat harness, and ability to tie-in with a retrace figure 8 knot. In addition, climbers must verify knowledge of climbing safety/etiquette and risk management such as bouldering, and proper spotting. Successful completion of the Top Rope Skills Check allows climbers permission to belay climbers and use of belay devices at the URec climbing Wall. Skills checks expire 6 months to date of issue and must be renewed by successfully completing another skills check. Climbing wall staff will evaluate for appropriate competency. Skill checks will be performed upon request by climbing wall staff.

Learn to Swim Learn to Swim emphasizes water safety while introducing the fundamentals of swimming, stroke development, and stroke improvement. Whether you are a novice swimmer or already know how to swim, this program is fit to accommodate all non-swimming abilities. Our instructors teach in small groups of ratio (4:1) up to four swimmers to one instructor depending on both age and skill ability. General Public

Gently introduce babies to submerging underwater, continuing to work on breath control, and teaching navigation of short distances. EDINBURG Host your next social event at UREC. Ranging from small gatherings with friends, a company party with coworkers, or an organization meeting. UREC has accommodations for your occasion. Our facility includes a conference rooms seating up to 120 people, features a drop down projector screen with laptop capabilities, an outdoor leisure pool, covered patio, gazebo complete with a barbecue pit, basketball courts, and sand volleyball pits are available for reservations. Selected areas in the facility may be reserved for group use. Available areas include the leisure pool, MAC, main gymnasium, social lounges, outdoor gathering spaces, conference rooms, dance studios and the climbing wall. Groups who wish to reserve certain areas must submit a facility reservation request at a minimum of two weeks prior to the reservation date. Rental fees must be paid in advance. We are ready for your next SPECIAL EVENT! Reserve by location or from one of the selected packages. All packages require a minimum reservation of two hours and accommodations start at 50 guests. Packages include one lifeguard per 25 individuals. Facility Manager on site are all CPR/AED and First Aid certified. All Climbing Wall staff are Belay certified. The packages that we offer can be modified per customer.
