Challenge Yourself For Rainbows

ake to the road. Take to the water. Or take to the hills! Whether you want go to great lengths or something more modest, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People has a challenge for you. You can help raise much-needed funds by taking part in a challenge in the UK or further afield. From a stroll to a marathon, a skydive to a mountain climb there is something to suit adventurers of all levels of fitness and bravery. Intrepid fundraisers can visit the events page on the Rainbows website to find a suitable challenge www.rainbows.co.uk/ challenges. With almost 30 challenges listed there should be something for anyone who wants to get involved. Walkers can do the Walk of Life on 27 May, as part of Children’s Hospice Week; runners can take part in the Great North Run on 16 September; skydivers can leap out of a plane at a time to suit and for those looking for something more extreme, there’s the chance to climb Kilimanjaro next January.

Those with a taste for travel might also be interested in challenges in Brazil, Spain, Sweden and even the Sahara Desert. Katie Baxter, community and events manager at Rainbows, said: “Rainbows challenge events raised more than £200,000 for the charity last year. “Challenges can be undertaken by individuals or groups, so why not get your work colleagues or sports team mates involved too? We have a dragon boat challenge taking place in August, which would make a great workplace challenge. Details can be found on our website.” One Nottingham resident who has been pounding the streets for Rainbows is Andrew Brunjes. He took part in the Great North Run last year with friend and Capital One colleague Dan Hardisty and the pair raised £800. Andrew said: “I got involved in supporting Rainbows while on voluntary community projects through my workplace last year. It was a real privilege just to help out and see firsthand what a really fantastic place it is for the children and their families. Like any parent I was naturally touched by the great work Rainbows does and wanted to do more to help. To contribute in some little way to the significant support Rainbows requires to provide care for life-limited children is all the motivation we need. It is a vital cause in the region which has to be maintained.” Of this year’s run Andrew said: “This year we have made the next step up from half marathon to the full 26.2 miles, running Brighton in April. For good measure we’ve also doubled our team from two to four. The training is going well to date, particularly with this year’s winter weather being relatively kind to us so far. Aches and pains are plenty, but we are all looking forward to our trip to the seaside and maybe some fish and chips at the finish line. As an added incentive to support our efforts for every £1 we raise it will be match funded by Capital One.” You can sponsor Andrew and colleagues Dayna Middleton, Daniel Pheasant and Alastair Talbot by visiting http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/

Do you need an Internet advantage over your competitors? The answer is easy, YES! In the modern day the internet is where people search for products or services; with this any company from a one person dog grooming business to a multi country business with a specific product need to be on the first page of search engines such as Google or Bing. Statistics says that if you are not on the first page of the organics search engine, you will not get the call! Organic driven searches are of greater interest to the searcher than the Pay per click adverts on the page, so we could say pay per clicks could not work for you. As we say the modern way to search for products and services is the internet, so having a Internet Advert is what we believe is the answer, I-Advantage is the cost effective search engine presence for your product or service, having a top three presence on each search engine will increase interest and sales leads, capturing these now before your competitor do is the key to any successful business.

Sales leads are directly returned to you and with no pay per click costs you know exactly how much to budget each year. So to find how you can achieve top search engine ranking call Matthew Burke on 07876663609.

So what is I-Advantage? We think of I-Advantage as an ever present advert on the internet, not a one hit half or costly full page advert in a publication hidden within pages and with a very small shelf life, I-Advantage can be around forever!

Community Information Totally Locally

Totally Locally West Bridgford How to Join Totally Locally..... or Not!

Well it’s like this.... You can’t join really. We’re not being funny, it’s just that there’s nothing to sign, nothing to pay, no certificate, it’s a lot less than that, but also a heck of a lot more! Totally Locally is about an attitude change.

Small Change, Big Change

Totally Locally is about reminding people of what they have around them and that, if they want to continue to have these great things, they only need to make small changes to make a large difference. If every adult in the West Bridgford spent £5 of their weekly spend in their local independent shops & businesses, instead of online or at a big supermarkets, our high streets would change dramatically It would mean a better town, more jobs and a nicer place for everyone to live. Small changes done by a few people start to create little micro economies - money

starts to circulate around and around locally

Small Change If You’re A Shop or Business

First, take a look at what you make or sell. Could you stock similar made by people in your own town? If you tell the people you are buying from why you’re doing it (and it would be great if you mention Totally Locally), it will get them thinking too.. Spread the word. And all of a sudden things will start to change – slowly at first, but hey, it’s taken us over 20 years to get to a point where we are dominated by the big 4 supermarkets, so it’s not going to happen overnight.

If You Can Do A Bit More…

We’re a very small team, and we do all of this as a sideline to our jobs, so any help we can get is always VERY gratefully received. We’re always looking for writers, photographers, foot soldiers, or people who just want to talk about shopping locally and supporting their independent businesses. Email us about what you do, set up a Facebook group, pass on our website, blog or tweet about us… If you have a shop or business you love, take a few minutes now to write a few lines about it and send them to us. We’ve even got a Hidden Gems Questionnaire to help you on your way - just send us an email or look for it on our downloads page. If you have an idea that you think could help tell us! We love new ideas Totally Locally Founders Chris Sands and Nigel Goddard will soon come to West Bridgford to answer any questions you may have as a local independent businesses or interested local resident. Please feel free to come along and find out more on how you can get involved if you register your interest by filling in the form on our website we will contact you with the full details closer to the time. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Let the sun shine in this Summer

Ellis Double Glazing Repair Services offer a brand new service, Conservatory Cleaning

Ian Ellis of Ellis Glazing Services is now offering Conservatory Cleaning, “I began offering this service earlier in the year before when I cleaned the after conservatory of a friend. The neighbours on both sides saw the transformation and asked me to do theirs and in the end I cleaned 4 conservatories on that street alone!” With over 20 years in the Glazing Industry and a good head for heights, Ian feels offering this service complements his existing business. “Sometimes a conservatory builds a greenish film up over time and a normal window cleaner can’t reach it, this is where I specialise. If the conservatory has other problems, leaks, drafts etc. I can sort them out as well.” So why not give Ian a call and let the sun shine in this Summer.

fter a night out it might be tempting to jump into the first mini cab you see, but you could be putting yourself in danger if you do. A mini cab, or private hire vehicle, is only licensed to pick up fares that have been pre-booked through a licensed operator. No booking means no record of your journey or your driver, and no insurance should an accident occur. If you want to flag down a ride, use a licensed Hackney Carriage which can pick up fares without a prior booking. Save the Children in Notts Needs YOU!

early 9 million children die every year before they reach their 5th birthday, and most of those deaths could be prevented. It doesn’t cost much to save a child’s life and YOU can help. Save the Children works in over 120 countries worldwide, including the UK to relieve suffering in emergency situations, improve health, well-being and education through long term projects and to help all children achieve their full potential.

West Bridgford. The shops too are always in need of more volunteers.

There are several branches of Save the Children across Nottinghamshire but all are in need of more volunteers to raise funds and awareness so that this vital work can continue. At present there are groups in West Bridgford, Southwell, Bingham, Radcliffe on Trent, Kinoulton, Newark and Mansfield. Events vary from coffee mornings and house to house and bucket collections to quiz nights, gift fairs, lunch clubs and accessory sales.

If you think you could help in any way at all, either by joining an established group, setting up your own group, becoming a speaker, helping in a shop, organising a fund raising event of your own, or simply giving a couple of hours of your time to help with a collection, do get in touch as soon as you can. We will be very pleased to hear from you!

There are also Save the Children charity shops in Arnold, Newark and Mansfield and plans are under way for a new store in

Another way to help spread the word about Save the Children is to become a Speaking Out Volunteer, for which training is given. If you would like to talk about Save the Children’s work to groups ranging from primary schools to W.I’s, please contact us. Trivia

F

Easter Elsewhere ed up with chocolate and bunnies? Check out these cool Easter traditions from our European neighbours.

In Finland children blacken their faces and go begging in the streets, rather like our Halloween. On Easter Monday the villagers of Haux, in France, cook up a giant omelette using over 4500 eggs. The omelette feeds over 1000 people and is served in the village square for lunch.

22

In some parts of Germany people save their Christmas trees and burn them in a ceremonial bonfire, which symbolises the victory of spring over the dark days of winter. Latvian children hold egg fights, using decorated eggs. The fights are similar to our conker fights and the egg which cracks first loses. Possibly the strangest tradition comes from Hungary, The Czech Republic and Slovakia. Here women are spanked on Easter Monday. It is said that spanking ensures a woman’s beauty will be preserved during the following year! Me? I’m sticking to the chocolate!

Scam Phone Calls

nce again, I have been contacted by a raft of customers who have experienced bogus phone calls from foreign sounding people who are trying to gain access to your computer. They will call up and say something like “hello Mr. Smith, I am calling from Microsoft / Nortons / UK Government / FBI. We have report that you have a faulty PC or that your PC is sending out many viruses.” From here, they will try to get you to allow them to have remote access to your computer. Once on your PC they will try to load programs to stop you using it, and then try to get you to spend between £50 and £150 for them to fix the problem. Once they have your bank details, the sky is the limit for them. They will get very forceful for you to allow them to have access. Ask them for their name, phone number and company and you will call them back after speaking with Trading

24

Standards or the Police. After this, they will drop the call and not bother you again. If have let them have access to your PC, I would suggest that you switch off or unplug your PC as soon as you can, even if they are on the PC. Then call your normal IT support person to have a look over the PC. Your IT support person, like myself, may have a remote access software to get on to your PC. This is OK if you know them and you have phoned them to logon and help you, but DO NOT allow unsolicited calls, even if you think that they sound OK. If you have been subject to this scam and you don’t have a support person to help you, give me a call below and I will be more than welcome to help you. Food and Drink Hot Cross Buns Wonderful Easter fare and home made are so much nicer. Prep time: 20 min, plus 3 hours proving Cooking time: 25 min Makes15-20 buns Ingredients For the buns 500 g strong bread flour, plus extra for dusting 1 1/2 tsp salt 75 g caster sugar 7 g sachet dried yeast 300 ml mixed milk and water 50 g sultanas 100 g raisins zest of 2 oranges 80 g mixed peel 2 tsp ground cinnamon 75 g plain flour For the crosses 75g plain flour Water to make a paste.

Lightly grease a baking sheet. Divide the dough into 15-20 pieces and roll each into a ball. Put them on a baking tray and leave to rest for 1 hour. Set the oven to 220°C/gas 8. To make the crosses for the buns, mix the plain flour with enough water to make a smooth, thick paste. You can either make a piping bag out of parchment paper or use a piping bag with a plain nozzle to pipe the paste onto the buns in a crossshape. Bake the buns for 25 minutes until golden brown. Combine the sugar and water together to make a syrup and brush this liberally all over the buns. Serve immediately. NB Many people don’t like mixed peel. In this case try substituting finely chopped dried apricot, or add more sultanas instead.

For the glaze 50 g sugar 50 ml water Method Put the yeast and sugar into a bowl. Sieve the flour and salt into the same bowl. Slowly add enough of the milk and water mix to achieve pliable dough. Tip out onto a lightly floured surface and knead well for 5 minutes, then put the dough back into the bowl and leave to rise for 1 hour. Incorporate the sultanas, mixed peel (or substituted fruit), orange zest and cinnamon into the dough and leave to rise for 1 hour.

Money Sense

A

Use it....Don’t Lose It

s we head out of the winter and towards the lighter days and warmer months, we begin the new tax year. Make sure you don’t miss out this year and ensure your savings are working as tax efficiently as possible, by making full use of your ISA allocation. The two key benefits of ISAs are that your money will grow tax efficiently and yet it will remain accessible to you. This is particularly helpful in the current financial climate, when interest rates on savings accounts are low and inflation (RPI) is running at 3.9%. Basically the longer you keep your money invested in cash, the less it is going to purchase you later on. With ISAs you can save on a regular, monthly basis or invest a lump sum during the tax year. Your annual ISA allowance in the 20122013 tax year has increased to £11,280 and this can be split between the two kinds of ISAs available; cash and stocks and shares ISAs. You can invest up to half of your annual allocation in a cash ISA. These are like a normal savings account

30 30

in that you can take cash out whenever you want, the only difference is the interest isn’t taxed. You can use up to your full ISA allowance in a stocks and shares ISA. These are a way of putting money into a wide range of investments without having to pay tax on the profits your make – but are really designed for longer term saving. A word of warning: be careful where you chose to set up your Cash ISAs as some providers offer incredibly low rates of interest after the first year. For more information on how to utilise this year’s ISA allowance, and help with seeking out the best ISA for you, or any other aspect of your financial planning, contact me Justin Stockdale of Sense Financial Solutions for more information. Please remember that the value of the investment can go down, as well as up, and you may not get back as much as you put in.

The Babysitter

ho is looking after your children?

Hiring a babysitter is a great way for parents to have a night out, and for the babysitter to earn a bit of pocket money. But how should you choose a babysitter? What is the legal position around babysitting? The law does not specify a minimum age for a babysitter, but the NSPCC recommends that you do not choose anyone under the age of 16. Even when you are out, the legal responsibility for the care and safety of your children remains with you. Be aware that 16-year-olds vary considerably in their maturity, so choose someone you already

know well, or who has been recommended by someone you know and trust. Make sure you all spend some time with the babysitter beforehand, so you are all comfortable with each other. On the night, make sure the babysitter knows where you will be, the phone numbers that you can be contacted on, and if possible, the number of a nearby relative and neighbour. Make sure they know what to do in an emergency, have a leaflet with basic first aid nearby. Let them know your house rules. And at the end of the night, escort them home or allow them to stay over, for their own safety. Good luck, and have a nice time! By Rita Williams-Hall

Health and Wellbeing Healing Hands

Today it continues to be taught by Reiki Masters, who can trace their lineage back to Dr Usui and who follow his five spiritual principals: to let go of anger, not to worry, be grateful, do work honestly, and be kind to every living creature.

R

eiki is amazing! It can be used for first aid, healing cuts, bumps and burns, as well as deeper longer lasting emotional and physical problems. Imagine being able to put your hand on a cut finger to help it heal more quickly. The exception is broken bones, which must be set first, though once applied, the plaster cast is no barrier to the healing energy. Parents naturally comfort their children by placing their hands on the hurt or giving them a hug. Training in Reiki enhances this natural process, allowing more energy to be passed on. Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning universal (Rei) life energy (Ki). It is an ancient system of energy transmission through the hands, rediscovered in the 19th century by Dr Mikao Usui, an expert in comparative religions and head of a Christian College in Japan. He decided to leave his teaching to research healing. His studies took him as far as America, India and Tibet, until he finally discovered a system of healing in ancient Sanskrit texts, which he used to develop the Reiki we know today. Before his death, he passed on the Reiki knowledge that eventually spread to America, Australia and Europe.

36

Reiki practitioners channel the energy drawn through them by the need, or imbalance of recipients, who then use it to heal themselves. It can enhance other healing methods and enable people to recover from surgery, chemotherapy, stress and emotional upsets. It is also used successfully with animals. A treatment involves lying fully clothed on a couch while the practitioner lightly places their hands in a sequence of positions on the abdomen, head and back for about 5 minutes, or when the energy ceases to flow. During a treatment people usually feel a sensation of warmth and deep relaxation. It is usually followed by a good night’s sleep, often experiencing more benefits on awakening. For more information there are a number of Reiki organisations, such as the Rei-Ki Academy, based in Northampton. As its popularity spreads, more people are receiving Reiki treatments and more are being trained, so benefitting from regular self treatments, as well as helping family and friends, and often becoming practitioners themselves. There is no belief system attached to it, so anyone can receive or learn to give a Reiki treatment. It is not difficult to learn and it simply uses the hands to heal. By Sue Blain (Naturopath)
