How many of us sat around with our friends and thought about what our lives would be like when we were 40. Would we be happy? Would we be married with children? Would we even still be friends? Dexter and Emma are both studying at Edinburgh University and on following their graduation they spend the night together. Both have dreams and plans and they wonder what their lives will be like in the future. This night marks the beginning of their friendship. A friendship that is revisited in the book every 15th July for 20 years. This is an interesting format for a novel: one chapter for each day. We see nothing of what happens in the intervening 364 days and are left to deduce what happened from the text. Will their lives turn out as they hoped – will Emma improve the world as she wanted to on that first 15th July? Life, it is clear, never quite turns out as we planned. As joy and tragedy play out for the reader, we are reminded that events have a habit of not asking us for permission first and taking us down a different path.

Hiring A Tree Surgeon Tree surgeons plant, maintain and perform hazard assessments on trees. They prune or cut down trees where necessary. It can be a dangerous job, involving the use of power tools, a lot of climbing and working at height. Yet surprisingly anyone can call themselves a tree surgeon! So, it’s up to you to research the company or individual carefully before hiring them. What qualifications should you look for? The National Proficiency Tests Council (NPTC) is part of the City & Guilds group and is the governing body which issues certificates of competence for tree surgeons. As a minimum, any tree surgeon you hire should hold the following certificates: CS30 – Maintenance of the chainsaw, on site preparation and basic cross cutting CS31 – Fell and process small trees CS38 – Climb a tree and perform
aerial rescue CS39 – Use of a chainsaw from a rope and harness First Aid at Work You should ask if the tree surgeon works to British Standards and see if he or she can name the relevant ones. The two main British standards for tree work are: British Standard 3998:2010 Tree work. Recommendations British Standard 5837:2012 Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction – Recommendations It’s also worth asking whether they have any other qualifications - like a relevant degree, additional NPTC certification, or whether they are a member of the Arboricultural Association (AA), the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) or the Royal Forestry Society? The difference between an arborist and a tree surgeon is education. The International Society of Arboriculture has developed a certification program and testing that gives the individual the distinction of being called a Certified Arborist.
The responsibility of being a Certified Arborist means maintaining the educational credits every year. These are highly skilled and qualified individuals who care about trees. Any contractor should provide you with a free quotation, in writing. This should break down exactly what’s included in the price. For example, does the final price for the job include the hire of any equipment, stump grinding, taxes, and the clearance and disposal of waste? They will also be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of how the law applies to their job.
Take a look at the equipment your chosen tree surgeon brings with him to the job - and how he uses it. In particular: Any worker should be wearing the right personal protective equipment. This should typically include a helmet with visor and ear protection, chainsaw boots and chainsaw trousers. Anyone working up in a tree should be wearing - and using - a harness and a rope. Organise An Easter Egg Hunt Easter egg hunts are great fun, but it can be hard to come up with original ideas. Depending on the ages of the children the hunt can be easy or fiendishly difficult Here are some ideas Bunny Bounce Challenge - Set up different activity posts around the garden or park. At each one, the kids need to complete a physical challenge in order to receive an egg.
Easter Craft Challenge - Set up different craft activities around the house or garden. For each cute Easter craft your child completes, they win a little chocolate egg.
Bunny Vouchers Easter Egg Hunt Some children can’t have chocolate due to a medical condition, so instead of chocolate treats, pop little slips of paper inside plastic eggs.
Easter Bonnet Competition Challenge the kids to create their own Easter bonnets from craft materials and old hats (Charity shops are great for cheap hats). You can give chocolate egg prizes for the most creative, the prettiest, the funniest etc

Host A Garage Sale Garage sales are great way to raise a little extra cash. Maximise your profit with our top tips.
Prepare - Think about what buyers might need. If you’re selling a lot of clothes, is there a screen so people can try things on in private. Is there a mirror? If you’re selling electronics or small appliances, have batteries or extension cords handy so people can see an item works.
Choose the right time - Weekend mornings are traditional, but Sunday afternoons might be good because people often like a walk after lunch. If you live on the same road as a primary school, try a weekday morning to attract people dropping their children off.
Have change - Have plenty of coins on hand so you can quickly provide change for customers.
Teamwork - Team up with a few neighbours to host a road-full of garage sales. By pooling resources, you could reach a wider range of potential customers. Advertise - Successful garage sales rely on spreading the word beforehand. Put up fliers or advertise in your local village or Parish magazine (like the one you’re holding!). If your village has a Facebook page, list your sale on that. Put up signs - Simple, bright signs work best. A large arrow pointing the way along with the words ‘GARAGE SALE’ will do the trick. Remember to remove them afterwards so you don’t contravene any by-laws.
Make it look like a shop - People browse longer in well-organised boutiques and stores. Borrow or rent tables so shoppers don’t have to bend over or rummage on the ground to inspect items. Put some bright bunting up to make it look welcoming. Group similar items togetherkitchen items in one area; kids’ clothes in another etc. This helps people evaluate what you have on offer quickly. Price It Right, and Offer Deals - A good rule of thumb is to sell items at 10-25% of their original value. People don’t look to spend a lot in a garage sale.

Spinach and Feta Frittata Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes Serves 4-6 Ingredients 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium shallot, finely chopped (about 2 tablespoons) 1 medium clove garlic, finely chopped (about 1 teaspoon) 1 (5-ounce) bag baby spinach 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh flatleaved parsley or basil. Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 10 eggs, beaten 1/4 cup milk 3/4 cup (about 3.5 ounces) crumbled feta Method Preheat the grill. Heat olive oil in an 8-inch pan over a medium high heat. Add chopped shallots and cook for 2-3 minutes beginning to soften. Add garlic and continue to cook for a further two minutes until softened.
Add spinach and parsley (or basil) and cook, tossing often until spinach is fully wilted and any water released by the spinach has cooked off. Season to taste with salt and pepper. In a large bowl, beat eggs and milk with a whisk until mixed together. Don’t over-beat. Add feta, and season with salt and pepper. Pour egg mixture over spinach then gently stir with a spatula to release the spinach from the bottom of the pan so that the eggs are in direct contact with the surface of the pan, so they cook quickly. Cook until the eggs are almost totally set (this takes 10-12 minutes), reducing heat to prevent burning. Place pan under the grill for a couple of minutes, until the top is set as well, keeping a close eye on it so it does not burn. To release the frittata from the pan, loosen edges with a spatula. Place a dinner plate over pan, and holding plate firmly flip the pan over so the frittata releases onto the plate. Serve warm.

Hair Today The desire to remove excess or dark hair usually begins in adolescence, and many women and men remain intent upon having smooth, hairless skin. Whether it is hair on the face, armpits, legs, back, bikini line, or other body parts, there are many options available to remove unwanted hair, but few to get rid of it permanently. The old standby shaving is the quickest but most temporary form of hair removal. Shaving cuts off hair at the surface and new growth may appear thicker and darker because the new hair shaft has a blunt tip instead of a tapered one. Before shaving, apply a moisturiser such as water, shaving cream, soap or hair conditioner to help the razor glide more easily. Plucking pulls the hair out of its follicle and when done repeatedly may damage it, thus preventing further growth.
Plucking is painful, so only suitable for small areas such as the eyebrows or odd facial hair. Variations are: threading, a traditional Indian method of plucking hair by twisting strings (good for eyebrows), and epilators, equipment which plucks out hairs en masse – good for larger areas such as legs and arms. Depilatory creams use a chemical called thioglycolate mixed with sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide to dissolve hair. Cream is applied for between 3 and15 minutes and the resulting jelly-like substance is then wiped or washed off. Depilatory creams can burn if left on for too long and may also cause an allergic reaction. Waxing is great for treating areas both large and small. Wax is warmed and spread in the direction of the hair growth and when cool is pulled off quickly in the opposite direction, pulling the hairs out of the follicle.
Waxing can be done at home or in the salon, but care should be taken not to get burnt. It can also be messy and painful. Electrolysis is one of the permanent methods of hair removal and should be done professionally. A fine needle is inserted into each individual hair follicle and an electric current applied to burn the hair root, preventing it from producing more hair. Many factors influence hair growth, so you will need to return for several electrolysis visits. The total number of sessions needed to remove hair
permanently from a particular area will vary from person to person. Most clients return once a week or every other week as needed. But the unwanted hair will be gone forever once the series of treatments is complete. Each treatment lasts between 15 minutes and one hour. Each session may take only 20-30 minutes, but a full course of treatment could take 12-18 months. Laser hair removal is not permanent but does have long-lasting results. It requires multiple treatments, and works by laser beams or light pulses destroying the hair root and retarding the re-growth of new hair. It can be expensive and painful and works best for light skinned people with dark hair. Home kits are available for purchase. School Parking Council looks at another CCTV car to tackle parking outside schools A third CCTV car could soon be patrolling the roads outside Nottinghamshire’s schools looking for parents who are parking illegally. The county council already operates two camera enforcement cars and will be stepping up their efforts to keep children safe at drop off and pick up times as parents continue to ignore ‘School Keep Clear’ road markings. The CCTV cars record illegal parking so they have the evidence to hand out £70 fines to drivers. Last year more than 600 drivers were caught out and handed Penalty Charge Notices.

Councillor Philip Owen, chairman of the Children and Young People’s committee, said he was delighted that a third CCTV car would now be considered for approval at the council’s Policy committee in April.
It is important, however, that parents and pupils crossing outside schools have a clear safe space to do so (School Keep Clear road markings) and this designated area is kept clear of parking through effective traffic management.” The county council’s first camera enforcement car was introduced in March 2016, and the second in May 2018. During 2018 more than 600 Penalty Charge Notices were issued by the council to cars parked on ‘School Keep Clear’ markings. The £70 penalty is reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.
Councillor Owen said: “Pupil numbers have increased over the past five years, and changes in pupil placement policies have resulted in some pupils travelling greater distances to schools usually by car.
The council already uses other road safety measures such as advance school warning signs for motorists, 20mph speed limits outside school entrances, and school crossing patrol services.
“Illegal and bad parking outside schools is an issue that head teachers, school governors and local residents regularly express concerns about.
The CCTV cars run at a slight loss but are cross-subsidised by income from other parking enforcement areas.
“Parking outside schools is a perceived danger rather than it actually resulting in child casualties.

Crimestoppers New Chair and Exec Committee looking to drive Nottinghamshire volunteer committee forward Crimestoppers in Nottinghamshire has appointed Pete Holland as Chairman, heading up its volunteer committee as the charity’s local group looks to help keeping communities in the area safe from crime.
This year’s London Marathon will be held on April 28th. This iconic event first took place over 30 years ago, in 1981. It was the brainchild of John Disley and Chris Brasher who after taking part in the New York Marathon, wondered if London could stage such a festival. 7,747 runners took part in the first London Marathon, whilst in 2012 there were over 37,000 participants. The Marathon is now a calendar highlight for competitors, spectators and charities alike. Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich will take part this year and is expected to complete the 26.2 mile course in just over 2 hours. For most of us a marathon would prove too gruelling, but there are half marathons, 10k and 5k runs or sub 5k events which anyone can enter. There are running events nearly every weekend somewhere in Britain. Running has many benefits, firstly it’s free. Once you have your basic kit, it costs nothing to simply ‘go out for a run.’ As you are not tied to a specific class or opening times, you can go running whenever you please. Studies extol the health benefits. Runners tend to be stronger and live longer. Regular exercise, along with a healthy balanced diet, can also reduce your risk of cancer. So how does a fledgling runner get started? Most beginners’ guides suggest doing a combination of run/
walk/run on your first outings and building up your distance gradually. You should always stretch, warm up and cool down and ensure you are hydrated. You should not run too fast. You should always be able to maintain a conversation and not breathe too heavily. Training programmes suggest that subject to satisfactory health, beginners could train to complete a 5k run within six weeks, training three times a week. Someone preparing for a marathon would probably have a training plan of at least 16 weeks. It’s important to have the correct equipment and in particular the right shoes. Specialists will use biomechanics, your weight, the surfaces you wish to run on and the shape of your feet as influencing factors when determining which shoes to recommend for you. Serious runners will alternate between two pairs of shoes during training, and shoes should be replaced after around 500 miles. Other items to consider include running socks, tights leggings or shorts, a stop watch, technical t shirt, a heart monitor, training log, drinks carrier, energy drinks and a lightweight jacket. Ladies will also require a high impact sports bra. Many find they are more committed to running if they have a training partner, and some join local running clubs for increased support and guidance.

The Perfect Pear They may look a little underwhelming with their crinkly green skin, but avocado-lovers know that the fresh creamy flesh is simply delicious and a perfect complement to eggs, smoked bacon, griddled chicken...I could go on. The avocado pear turns out not to be a pear at all, but a berry. It also turns out to be pretty much the perfect food. They have a reputation for being ‘bad’ and high in calories. It’s true that a medium-sized avocado contains 30g of fat (as much as a quarter-pound burger!) but an avocado’s fat is mostly monounsaturated fat (that’s the good kind). Studies have shown that avocado eaters are less at risk for metabolic syndrome, which also puts them at less risk of type-2 diabetes and heart attacks. Avocados contain folate, an important nutrient for pregnant women and infants, and interestingly have also been shown to slow and possibly reverse memory loss in Alzheimer’s
patients. If you are weaning your baby, avocados are a great first food because of their soft texture, and nutritional benefits, like healthy fats for brain development. Avocados are high in carotenoids so offer skin protection against aging caused by UV damage. They also have anti-inflammatory properties, which is good for people with rheumatoid arthritis but also because inflammation has been linked to Alzheimer’s, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and cancer. Flying High Academy Flying High Academy children have sky high aspirations for their future careers! Children at the Flying High Academy in Ladybrook came to school dressed up in clothes representing their dream jobs this week, meeting professional people who came to discuss the many career options available to them. The children met with representatives from Derbyshire Constabulary, Microsoft, the graphic design industry, a financial adviser, school cook, DW Sports & Fitness, Highways England, energy consultants, recruitment consultants and speech and language experts from Portland Training College. Mansfield MP Ben Bradley also visited the school, and said he was pleased to talk to children about their aspirations. “This is my first visit to the Flying High Academy which I know has a fantastic reputation and I’ll be interested to see what they are doing to raise the aspirations of their pupils. I will talk to children a little bit about what I do and tell them I started out in a similar primary school and that anyone can set out to do the job that I do. Maybe some of them will want to become an MP too!” Pupil Chahat Marwaha (age 10) came dressed as a doctor and she said, “I want to make sure everyone stays well and away from illness because I want to make everybody happy. Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge Teams race to sign up for the Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge! Companies, clubs and organisations from across the region are getting their teams together and signing up to take part in the eagerly anticipated Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge which celebrates its 11th anniversary this year. The Dragon Boat Challenge takes place on the River Trent at the Victoria Embankment on Sunday 4th August in aid of Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People and is one of the key attractions of the Riverside Festival. One of the early entrants are event first-timers, NAPIT from Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, who offer membership services to the building trade. The company has chosen to enter both a Gold and Silver team to involve as many NAPIT members as possible and maximise the funds raised for Rainbows. Crew manager Helen Willings explains
how they hope to benefit from their participation; “The NAPIT teams will be made up of colleagues from a range of departments led by the Group’s Chief Executive, Mike Andrews. Team members include our resident action man, Gareth Davies, who competes in triathlons and long distance swims and avid fundraiser Linda Elliott who has already sailed three times down the River Adur in a bathtub to raise money for charity! We aim to take away fun and happy memories of employees working together and with those who come along to watch and support with their families. We hope the challenge brings colleagues together and gets them connected with staff from departments they might not usually work with to create new friendships.” Other early entrants include Gold crew, Abel Alarm Company, silver crew DeltaNet International and standard crews, Hallmark Consumer Services and Midland Quarry Products. To take part in the dragon boat racing and help raise money for
Rainbows, no previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit and enthusiasm! The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. Teams and spectators also benefit from being part of one of the region’s largest family festivals with a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world, staged by Nottingham City Council. All the crews are encouraged to raise sponsorship for the Challenge’s official charity, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, and help make a difference to over 400 children and their families that the charity supports across the East Midlands.

Easter Eggs & Bunnies Eggs have been used as symbols at festivals since before the time of Jesus, but are now particularly synonymous with Easter and the story of the resurrection.
It is not known exactly who first created the story of the Easter Bunny, but it seems to have its origins in Germany. It was first mentioned in German texts in the 16th Century.
Eggs are said to represent new life, and for Christians when they are cracked open, they stand for the empty tomb following Jesus’ rising.
In the 1700’s German immigrants told stories when they went to America of egg- laying rabbits, and they encouraged children to use caps and bonnets to make nests which the Easter bunny would fill with coloured eggs - if they’d been good.
Eggs are also considered special, because although they do not seem alive they have life within them especially in springtime when chicks hatch out. In previous times people gave gifts of eggs carved from wood or precious stones. It is only in the last 100 years or so that sweet eggs have been eaten. The size and range of chocolate eggs available seems to increase every year. The tallest chocolate egg was 10.39 metres tall and made in Italy in 2011. It weighed 7.2 kilograms and was 9.6 metres at its widest point!
The first edible Easter bunnies appeared in Germany during the early 1800s and were made of pastry and sugar. The symbol of the rabbit was probably chosen because of its associations with fertility and spring. It is believed that Eostre, the Anglo Saxon God of Spring, had a hare as a companion. In addition to having Easter Egg Hunts to search for the eggs left by the Bunny, another common Easter activity is egg rolling. This is done using real hard boiled eggs, and time is usually spent decorating them beforehand.
In years gone by the eggs were dyed using onion skin, today’s painting process is much easier. In the UK egg rolling is generally done by rolling eggs down a hill, and the winner is the one whose egg rolls further or survives the most rolls. In the early nineteenth century in Northern Ireland, egg rolling was described as ‘trindling’ or ‘trundling.’ Another traditional game involves holding your egg in the palm of the hand and banging against your opponent’s egg. The loser is the one whose egg breaks first. In the USA one of the most well known events is held on the White House

Rabbits usually give birth to a big litter of babies (called kittens), so they became a symbol of new life. Legend has it that the Easter bunny lays, decorates and hides eggs as they are also a symbol of new life This is why some children might enjoy Easter egg hunts as part of the festival. In Switzerland, Easter eggs are delivered by a cuckoo and in parts of Germany by a fox.

April Fools Day
Surprisingly little is known about the origins of April Fools’ Day. There seem to be three main theories.
Some attribute it to the 14th Century English poet Geoffrey Chaucer. He told a story where a fox plays a prank on a rooster, who nearly gets eaten because of it. He doesn’t refer directly to April 1st but refers to 32 days ‘syn March began’, which translates as 32 days since March began, i.e. April 1st. Some believe April Fools’ Day started because of events in the calendar dating back to Roman times. The Renewal Festivals were a celebration of the start of the new year, which at the time was around the end of March and the Spring Equinox. As part of the tradition servants could boss their masters around and children could boss their parents around, so the idea of pranks may have come about then. A rival calendar theory is that at some point people started celebrating new year at the beginning of January, instead of the end of March. Those who continued to celebrate it at the end of March were considered to be fools.
THE TRENT LOCK
Finally, some people believe it spread to the UK from Northern Europe. There it is known as April Fish Day. It’s thought this is because there are a lot of fish in French streams and rivers around 1st April, and they are easy to catch - foolish fish! So became a tradition to play tricks on people on April 1st too by attaching a paper fish to someone’s back. The truth is that probably all of these events have played their part in creating the tradition. Have fun...and don’t get pranked! By Ian Robbins

There is a good deal of interest at Trent Lock, with the Erewash Canal, River Trent and River Soar meeting at Trent Lock, which is located on the borders of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire & Leicestershire. Trent Junction is important in the rail network, too, for train enthusiasts. Certainly, there is plenty to see and do at Trent Lock and in this vicinity, constantly, whether it is boating and waterways, fishing, rambling, walking or cycling.
