Health and Wellbeing Tooth Care for Kids
This is good for encouraging a thorough brushing routine. An electric toothbrush especially designed for children is very effective. Fluoride toothpaste is vital, fluorine in the water is a bonus, not a replacement.
D
oes the thought of visiting the dentist fill you with dread? Do you break out in the cold sweat of sheer terror? If so, then please don’t pass this fear onto your child. Your child must be relaxed about visiting the dentist for their future health and wellbeing. Good dental habits start young. Introduce your child to the dentist as early as possible by taking them with you when you go for your regular dental check-up. This will get them used to the sights, sounds and smells of the dental surgery. Your dentist may take a quick, casual look in your child’s mouth, ostensibly to count teeth, but also to check gently for any early problems. This will encourage your child to feel comfortable in the chair. Get your child used to cleaning their teeth start as soon as the first tooth shows through their gums. Brush gently with a special baby toothbrush. Supervise teeth cleaning until they prove they are proficient enough to do it themselves. Plaque-disclosing tablets stain the plaque so your child can see it.
6
Most children have their entire set of 20 milk teeth by the age of three. Proper development of their permanent teeth depends upon the condition of these first teeth, so it’s essential to care for them. Milk teeth are small with thin enamel so problems spread quickly. Adult teeth start to grow by the age of six and most should be evident by the time they’re 13. Apart from accidents, there are two preventable causes of damage to children’s teeth; tooth decay and dental erosion. Both have similar causes. Acids from sweet foods and drinks, including fruit juices, eat into the tooth enamel. Water or milk are the best drinks for children. Fissure sealants are well worth considering. This is a special film used to cover the vulnerable molars which have deep, hard to clean crevices. The sealant protects the tooth surface from decay. Sealants are quick and painless to apply and last for years. Regular dental check-ups are essential to prevent future, potentially traumatic, treatment. Help your child grow up with a healthy set of teeth and gums. Good habits created while the child is young will stand them in good stead for the rest of their life. Suki North

Computer Stress
f you spend a large amount of time on a computer most days, then chances are you are doing yourself some harm. Maybe you haven’t got any obvious physical symptoms like a sore back, tense neck and shoulders or numbness and tingling in your hands but, at the very least, the time you spend at the computer is likely to be adding considerably to your stress levels. And studies are showing that this extra work-related stress can be surprisingly harmful in the long term. Over the past few months I have presented my top tips for reducing the risk of physical injury from heavy computer use. This month I’m going to look at what happens when damage is actually done.
Tip 4 – Get Professional Help Up till now in this series of articles on the physical hazards of excessive computer use and how you can deal with them, I have focused on self-help measures. Sometimes though, the aches and pains you experience as a result of excessive keyboard work can only be relieved with professional help. Most often, your GP will be the first port of call. This is appropriate; doctors are able to diagnose the problem and can detect any serious underlying condition which might be causing your symptoms.
Bowen Therapy have a lot to offer in the management of such injuries. This is because they address both the physical symptoms and any stress issues. In most cases, only a few sessions should be needed to effect substantial improvement. Of course, the longer the problem has been present, the longer it may take to resolve. Periodic maintenance sessions may be required to avoid re-injury. It is important to select a competent therapist. Personal recommendations are a valuable guide, and there are listings of qualified practitioners online. Look for evidence of membership in a professional association or registration. Check and see if the therapist you are considering is registered with the new Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council set up by the Department of Health (http://www. cnhcregister.org.uk/). Most of all, trust your instincts about how the health practitioner you select approaches your particular case. The best results are achieved when you and your therapist establish a good rapport. Randy Barber is a massage and Bowen therapist based in West Bridgford. Visit www.nottinghammassage.com for more information or ring 07743495588.
Once a medical opinion has been obtained, you may have a wide choice of treatment options including many complementary therapies. As a massage and Bowen therapist, I am naturally interested in promoting my modalities as effective ways of dealing with typical soft tissue injuries incurred by computer users. Both massage and

Looked after in Retirement?
was talking to a friend the other day who asked me ‘Why should I pay into a pension when there are other people who don’t making any effort and yet the government will look after them in retirement?’ I thought well how is the Government going to look after you in retirement? Flat rate pension The Government recently unveiled plans for a flat rate pension of £140 per week so that it is simple to understand. This will only provide you with £7280 per year which is rubbish compared to what average earnings are. Raising the State Pension Age By 2020 both men and women will not receive their state Pensions until age 66. From 2044 the pension age is due to rise to 68 but don’t think that the Government will not bring this date forward. Price Waterhouse Cooper has recommended a swift rise to age 70 in
10 12
order to reduce the public debt. How long do you want to work? So when you say ‘looked after in retirement’ it’s not the same meaning as I would have! The Government will look after you on a subsistence living basis. That is, giving you enough for your council tax, your bills, and some food. Not enough for your holidays, eating out, a new car and treating the grandchildren. We need to take responsibility for our Retirement! Pensions have had bad press.......but they need looking after and reviewing and more importantly you need to pay in a lot! But a lot less if you start early enough! All these things I can help with so contact me Justin Stockdale of Sense Financial Solutions by telephone 07817 618823 or by e-mail justin@itmakessense.net because I am passionate about clients finances and I will help you plan for your future.

Improve your family home videos It’s amazing to think that in such a short space of time, evolution of camera technology has given us access to near-professional equipment at a reasonable price. With almost every home now also owning a computer and basic edit software, wouldn’t it be great to learn a few free and easy tips to instantly improve your own videos? Thought so! Well, here’s 5 to set you off: 1. Keep it steady The tripod is a cameras best friend, so use it as much as you can. Many modern cameras also come equipped with an image-stabilisation feature, which can be helpful when you’re on the move. 2. Limit use of ‘digital zoom’ Although manufacturers will have you believe digital zoom is a great way of getting closer to the action, your video picture will end up noticeably ‘blocky’ and pixelated. If you want to maintain quality, use optical zoom only. 3. No ‘in-camera’ effects! Don’t use them! Make sure you have the
14
‘date and time’ feature disabled too. These are all, in general, unnecessary gimmicks and only useful if you don’t have access to a computer and editing software. 4. Edit your footage You’ll want to cherish every word and mannerism, but consider cutting your footage down for a more digestible viewing experience. For an average home video, it’s good practice to cut it down to about a tenth of the length of your raw footage. 5. Add music You’ll be amazed by how a music track can dramatically improve the overall feel of a video. It can have the ability to make people laugh, cry and generally engage with it much more than before. This brief guide was written by Adam Cliff, who has worked previously with cameras for ITV. He’s since moved back to Nottingham to start his own business: Make It Media.

Two organisations benefitting the community The Charity Shop is located in the Hockley area of Nottingham. The shop opened in 2009 as the first to support the work of The Aegis Trust in its work to prevent genocide. Based locally at The Holocaust Centre in North Nottinghamshire, Aegis works internationally in Rwanda running the national memorial to the genocide of 1994, educating young people to stand up against prejudice and supporting survivors. The Charity Shop is a quirky boutique and country chic in style, but like any other charity shop relies on the kindness of donors. Without major donors such as JunkPorters®, finding the right stock would be a struggle. It’s with the generous support of this company that The Charity Shop has been able to grow, opening its second shop in September. Garden View
A
Microorganisms
s their name suggests you can’t see them, yet microorganisms are some of the most important things you can grow in your garden.
Garden soil is teeming with millions of them, or rather it should be. They help to keep the soil healthy. They decompose organic matter, replenish soil nutrients, form humus, promote root growth, increase nutrient uptake, and breakdown herbicides and pesticides. The microorganism family includes bacteria, algae, fungi, and protozoa and we want to do everything we can to encourage these tiny gardening friends. In order to provide a good environment we need to provide oxygen, moisture, carbon-based food matter, and the right temperature and pH. Oxygen content can be kept high by digging in lots of organic matter so that the soil structure is aerated. 75% of microorganisms live in the top two inches (5cm) of soil so particular care should be taken not to compact the topsoil. Improving the drainage of stodgy clay soil is particularly important as water-logged soil contains very little oxygen.
Finally, pH is probably the most difficult area to tackle. Most gardens have a natural pH range beyond which they’re not going to change much. So someone living on a limestone ridge, as I do, is never going to be able to grow acid-loving Azaleas, except in pots. But that’s not what we’re trying to achieve when creating a favourable environment for microorganisms. We don’t need to radically shift the pH, we just need to modify it slightly. There are pH modifiers on the market, but the best way of doing it is slowly by digging in compost or other organic matter. Organic matter acts as a neutraliser and will work whether your soil is acidic or alkaline. It is particularly important for alkaline soils like mine, because they have far fewer bio-available nutrients so become impoverished very quickly. This month give some thought to encouraging your microorganisms. Your plants will thank you.
Mulching helps to improve the moisture content of soil and also helps to maintain the soil temperature. Bare soil bakes in the summer and freezes in the winter. Mulch acts as both shade and insulation so the temperature remains more constant. Carbon-based food matter is just a posh way of saying ‘organic matter, including green manure and well-rotted compost. This provides a gourmet buffet for microorganisms and they’ll reproduce rapidly.

Computer Power
ver the last month, I have had a number of computers faults that have been caused by power surges or temporary power cuts, some have needed new Power Supplies, others have had to be rebuilt completely. How can you protect yourselves from these? At a minimum, you should look to have a surge protected power rail between your computer and the main power socket. I personally use these on all of my main electrical devices such as TV, Videos DVDs etc. They work by providing you a cushion between the mains supply and your computers. If a large power spike comes through the mains, a set of capacitors in the power rail soak up the extra electricity. If the surge is too high, they blow, thus stopping any power getting to your devices. The Power surges can be caused by lightning strikes, problems on the main supply from your electric supplier, large electrical industrial
devices close by powering on and off. Your next level of defence, is to install an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). This box again sits between your computer/ monitor and the main supply. The difference here, is that the unit has a set of batteries inside which are charged by the mains. If the mains power drops below a certain power level or goes off , the unit will instantaneously cut in and power your computer/monitor until the mains have been restored. Laptops have a battery inbuilt into them so normally a UPS is not needed, but I would recommend a surge protection rail. You can get small in-line surge protection devices for when you are on the move and away from home for around £20-£30 If you have any questions, call Bryan from Midland Data Networks (01949 876 098) or email questions@midlanddatanetworks. co.uk
