What Can I Do For Free This Summer?

When the summer holidays are long but funds are short what are the options? You could take a trip to your local museum. Many areas have Council run museums and art galleries with no entrance fee. Frequently in school holidays, themed activities are run to help engage visitors. In addition to these general history and local interest venues, there are also many specialist free museums in the UK. Some of the most famous are in London and include the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Childhood. You might be surprised what you find as there are museums for all manner of things, including cheese making at Wensleydale, North Yorkshire, and Shoes at Street, Somerset. Or you could venture outdoors and enjoy some fresh air. Beaches offer a unique environment often with rock pools to explore and the opportunity to make sandcastles or play beach games. Even if the weather is less than favourable, if you wrap up warm you can still have lots of fun. You could organise a family game of rounders in your local park, take a picnic, sit and sketch the wildlife, trees or passers by, or maybe venture to a larger park or nearby forest and explore new paths, wildlife trails and exciting play areas.

6

You could take a bike ride along your local canal towpath, riverside or perhaps a disused railway track. There are now many special traffic free routes for cyclists. A trip to the local carnival or village fayre can also offer lots of fun. Many incorporate parades of colourful floats with occupants dressed up and have interesting displays from local clubs.

These events can offer the opportunity to get a real sense of your community and many have been running for hundreds of years. They may incorporate traditions such as Morris dancing, well dressing, or the newer trend of Scarecrow trails. You may find yourself contributing to charity, buying some local produce or even an ice cream if the sun is shining, but there is generally no entrance fee as they take place on the streets. There are also many free festivals. These are often music based, but also include riverside festivals and a Watercress festival in Arlesford. Spice Up Your Life!

pices don’t just make your food tasty, they have health benefits too.

Spices have been around for thousands of years. They were first imported to Europe in the Middle Ages, selling for huge amounts of money and making the merchants who sold them very rich. They are used to colour, flavour and preserve food. Many are thought to have medicinal properties and some are used in traditional and religious ceremonies. There are hundreds of different kinds of spices and they can be seeds, roots, bark or vegetative substances. Most are bought as dried powders. Whole seeds will keep longer, but they need to be ground before use. Chilli peppers can be eaten fresh, or used dry as a powder or flakes. They are used to add heat to curries, chilli con carne, pasta dishes, dips and even chocolate desserts. Generally, the smaller the chilli, the hotter it is. The capsaicin found in chilli gives it its heat and has been said to relieve pain

and prevent stomach ulcers and stomach cancer.

antioxidants that can help protect against disease.

Ginger is another versatile spice. The fresh root is added to many Asian and Indian dishes, and the powder is used to flavour cakes, biscuits and desserts. The spice can decrease nausea and motion sickness, and ease digestive problems.

Cinnamon is a warming, fragrant spice that is taken from the dried inner bark of a tropical tree. It is used in cakes and desserts and many savoury dishes. Research shows that it may lower blood sugar levels and so can be beneficial for sufferers of Type 2 diabetes. It is also thought to help with toothache and bad breath. Some studies have found that smelling cinnamon can increase alertness and brain function.

Turmeric is the spice that gives curry powder and mustard their deep yellow colour. It is also used as a dye and food colouring. In India, it is highly regarded and is used in wedding ceremonies. Turmeric is from the same family as ginger. Although normally used as a powder, fresh chunks can be used in pickles. Both ginger and turmeric are anti-inflammatories and can help people suffering from arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease. They are also high in

And finally, the queen of spices. Saffron is the world’s most expensive spice. It was first cultivated in Greece and is derived from the dried stigmas of the saffron crocus. It takes 250,000 stigmas to make just half a kilogram of the spice. Saffron gives food a beautiful yellow-orange colour. It is used in Middle Eastern cookery, rice dishes and also desserts and sweets, including marzipan. It has a long history in traditional medicine, and has been used to treat epilepsy, depression, menstrual disorders and fatigue. By Alex Brown

Hand Luggage Fashion

ith new budget holiday websites popping up every day, it’s becoming even easier to snap up a cheap last minute deal for a lovely sunny holiday. Once you’ve got your flights and hotel booked you’re ready to go – well, almost. The next thing to think about is your summer wardrobe. A simple way to save money before your holiday has even begun is to pack everything into a hand luggage sized bag so you don’t have to pay extra for hold luggage. Fitting a whole holiday’s worth of clothes in a small bag may seem a bit daunting but with some clever planning and mix and match outfits you don’t need to worry. The key to travelling light is to pack a base of classic items which go with anything and then add a small mix of garments and accessories to complement the simpler pieces. First of all you need the classic essentials. The first is a simple vest top: go for a colour that works well with the rest of your wardrobe whether that is blue, white, black or any other colour that you like. This can be paired with shorts or a skirt and can also be worn under a sheer blouse if the weather is a little cooler. The second item on the essentials list is a good pair of shorts. Denim shorts are an absolute classic and are in fashion year after year but if you’d rather opt for something else, there are

10

plenty of other choices: lightweight fabrics such as linen and cotton are perfect for hot summer days and come in a variety of styles and colours so you can find the right pair of shorts for you.

Hopefully the sun will make an appearance on your holiday so it’s a good idea to pack a couple of sundresses. There’s a huge selection of sundresses available on the high street so the choice is yours! Embrace the summer trends by trying a bold floral or tribal print. A knee length, V-neck sundress is flattering to many body shapes and will be suitable for most summer occasions. If you’ve got any special events planned, why not pack a maxi dress? The extra length adds instant glamour and can easily be dressed up with a clutch bag and statement jewellery or dressed down with a simple sunhat and sunglasses.

sensible comfy shoes for all the walking. Once you’ve got these basics sorted, it’s time to add the extra items. For example, it’s a good idea to pack a cardigan or lightweight jacket for the cooler summer evenings and it will be a very welcome extra layer for the journey home back to the UK. Add in a couple of floaty blouses, pretty skirts and the all-important swimwear and you’re ready for your holiday. Remember to leave a bit of space for the sun cream and any souvenirs you buy on your travels! Rhiannon Chown r_chown@ yahoo.co.uk

Speaking of accessories, getting the right shoes for your holiday is very important. It’s worthwhile investing in a good pair of sandals as they’ll last you for years and will go with any outfit. If you’re planning on doing some sightseeing, remember to pack some

DUKERIES U3A

Edwinstowe & the Dukeries Lions Club held their annual “changeover” dinner on 4th July at The Red Gate Inn on Westfield Lane Mansfield. Out going President Tony Pink presented the chain of office to incoming President Jon Yarwood. Tony thanked the club for its support during the past year and hoped the members would support President Jon over the coming months. The presentation followed a delightful meal that was enjoyed by the Lions and their guests. The Lions are currently supporting a young man from Bilsthorpe, Toby Nadal, who is raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Toby is cycling from John O’ Groats to Land’s End between 27th July and 9th August. Toby so far has raised £3000. The Lions have circulated information to clubs on Toby’s route, which has increased the donations to over £4000. The money raised will be put towards a ward at the QMC in Nottingham especially for teenage cancer patients. We will update the Spotlight as to Toby’s progress. The Lions are holding their annual Race Night at South Forest Edwinstowe on Friday 13th September (lucky for some). Tickets are now available

The Dukeries U3A (University of the 3rd Age) meets at Jubilee Hall, Wellow Road, Ollerton on the 3rd Monday of each month. We have over 100 members who enjoy the many events we participate in. The main criteria for membership is that a prospective member must be retired - or semi-retired. We have no age limits and all genders are welcome to join us. Our interest groups are many and varied. For the active we have two walking groups, ten-pin bowling, a recently formed ballroom dancing group, and a well subscribed gardening group (no spades involved - just visits to interesting gardens and stately homes!) Cerebral stimulation is provided by groups interested in history, architecture, reading, beginners, (and improvers), computer instruction, theatre visits, art appreciation, poetry and bridge. General interest groups cover many topics including investment clubs, hand-bell ringing (new members urgently sought!), outings and day trips - including holidays and short breaks, papercraft, scrabble, stitchcraft, woodworking and wine appreciation. For more information please call either 01623 824789 0r 01623 862287. Our next two meetings will be held on Monday, August 19th and Monday, September 16th. We open our doors at 1pm for a 1.30 start. You are very welcome to join us. Visitors are charged just £1 for a visit.

Teens and Contact Lenses

s a child I wore thick spectacles. My eyesight was and is appalling. During PE I used to remove my specs for fear of breaking them, which meant I could see nothing beyond arm’s length and made me something of a liability on the hockey pitch, both to myself and others.

One day my optometrist suggested I try contact lenses and my parents agreed. In those days contact lenses were hard and took a lot of getting used to, but I persevered and was soon wearing them all day. The difference it made was astonishing. I was never a hockey star, but at least I didn’t keep colliding with the other players. I developed a talent for netball and even made the county team, thanks mainly to the fact I could now see the goal posts! Contact lenses had other benefits too. My peripheral vision had been very restricted, due to a combination of my spectacle lenses and the frames which held them, so my spatial awareness increased, and I became more able and confident in all activities from dancing to bike riding. I also felt prettier. Now that’s quite a shallow response to contact lens wear and I know many teens who love their specs, but in all honesty as a teenage girl, that’s how I felt. So I was amazed when my optometrist told me that very few children and teens wear contact lenses, even though one in five children aged between five and fifteen, and one in three 16-19-year-olds need vision correction. That’s a lot of youngsters who would potentially benefit from contact lens wear.

14

There’s no minimum age for contact lens wear. Many children, even the very young would benefit from the improved vision and freedom-from-specs which contact lenses can provide. Age is much less important than how responsible they are. Your optometrist will make sure that you and your child are instructed properly in the safe insertion and removal of the lenses, how to look after them and what to do in an emergency e.g. if the eye becomes red or sore. Properly fitted and monitored contact lenses are a safe form of vision correction. Modern lens materials are very breathable so ensure the eye stays healthy. Contact lenses should be fitted by an optometrist experienced in fitting youngsters, and reviewed every three to six months, depending on the age of the child. Hygiene is everything. Washing hands before handling the lenses and the eye area is very important. The eye is a moist, warm environment and is therefore a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Some lenses are replaced monthly, so need to be cleaned properly every night. Modern solutions make this very easy, though there can be an inclination to become a bit slap-dash, so parental supervision is recommended. Daily disposable lenses on the other hand are ideal for children and teens because they are thrown away each night and a fresh pair inserted the next day, so the risk of infection is minimal. Even astigmatism and quite complex prescriptions can be corrected with contact lenses nowadays. Make sure you choose a practitioner who is really knowledgeable about contact lenses and who keeps up to date with the latest developments in the field. By Louise Addison

Choose the right scooter for your child Riding a scooter is a great way for children to get around. Whether they are zooming to school or zipping around the park, a scooter is much easier to master than a bicycle and is normally less expensive.

them very easy to carry around or pop in the boot of the car. These scooters also come in lots of funky designs and some have flashing lights on the footplate.

Two-wheel scooters can get up to a good speed, but they are not all suitable for

For young children, scooters with three or four wheels are best to help them develop balance and co-ordination. Modern models often have two wheels at the front and one at the back. You steer by simply leaning to the side. Younger children’s scooters have soft grips and anti-slip footplates to maximise safety. They are chunkier than scooters for older children and may not fold down. Many are brightly coloured or feature favourite TV characters. When children have mastered the basics, they can move on to a twowheeled push scooter. The height of the handlebars can normally be adjusted so the scooter can ‘grow’ with your child. Many have a brake, operated by pressing a pedal over the back wheel. Some even give off sparks when you do this! They’re convenient too – most are lightweight and fold in half, which makes

last for around 45 minutes. You accelerate using a twist-grip control and can reach speeds of up to 15mph. The latest innovation in scooting is the ‘tri’ or ‘Y’ scooter. These are threewheeled scooters, but you stand with your legs apart on two separate plates that come together at the front. To travel, you move your body from side to side in a skiing motion. And if you like to visit country parks with rough tracks, how about an off-road scooter, with larger wheels and pneumatic tyres for a smoother ride, and a raised footplate which won’t catch on any bumps.

doing jumps and tricks. For this, you will need a stunt scooter, which is stronger than a normal one. They have a rigid head tube and bars, metal wheels and rubber grips, and they aren’t foldable. If your child likes to travel at speed but isn’t keen to put the effort in, how about an electric scooter? Suitable for children aged eight and older, they are powered by rechargeable batteries that

Whatever type of scooter you choose to buy, always check the size carefully to make sure it is suitable for your child. This is especially important if you are buying online, and manufacturers should give height and weight restrictions for their products. Finally, a word on safety. As with bicycles, children can and will fall off their scooters. Minimise their injuries by getting them kitted out with a helmet, kneepads and elbow pads. By Alex Brown

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Employment Law Update

From Monday 29 July 2013, all new employment claims (and appeals to the Employment Appeal Tribunal) will require a fee to be paid by the claimant or appellant. The fees will be paid in two stages, an ‘issue fee’ payable on submitting the claim (or appeal) and a ‘hearing fee’ payable prior to the full hearing. The level of the fee will depend on whether the claim is Level 1 or Level 2. Level 1 claims will comprise straightforward, lower value claims such as sums due on termination of employment (unpaid wages, redundancy payments and payments in lieu of notice). Level 2 claims will comprise all other claims, including unfair dismissal, discrimination, equal pay and whistle blowing. The fees will be as follows: Fee Type Level 1 Claims Level 2 Claims Issue Fee £160 £250 Hearing Fee £230 £950 Tribunals will have the power (but not an obligation) to order an unsuccessful party to

18

reimburse fees paid by the successful party. The new regime applies to all cases issued from 29 July so there may be a ‘spike’ in claims issued prior to this date but it is expected that, in the long term, the fee will put many employees off bringing a claim. A fee remission scheme will apply for those on low incomes but the current means testing proposals are such that an individual with no household income and as little as £3,000 in savings would be liable to pay the full fee – many would deem that to be too risky a gamble. The idea is to reduce the workload of the Tribunal system by weeding out those cases which are without foundation and are brought for nuisance value only. However, it will also take away the rights of some to bring their employers to account for their actions. If you wish to discuss any employment related issues then please contact Marc Turner on 01623-460444 or mturner@ alcocks-solicitors.co.uk . Certain cases may qualify for a “no win no fee” agreement .

Cheap Electricity From Sunlight

S

olar panel electricity systems, also known as solar photovoltaics (PV), capture the sun’s energy using photovoltaic cells. These cells don’t need direct sunlight to work – they can still generate some electricity on a cloudy day. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which can be used to run household appliances and lighting. There is little or no maintenance required and they can be fitted to most properties – including east/ west facing roofs.

The benefits of solar electricity Cut your electricity bills: sunlight is free, so once you’ve paid for the initial installation your electricity costs will be reduced. A typical 16 panel 4KW system will generate approximately 3500KWh of electricity in a year. This equates to a £200 saving on your electricity bill (assumed 50% usage). Get paid for the electricity you generate: the government’s Feed-In Tariffs pay you up to £550/year TAX FREE! for the

electricity you generate, even if you use it. This amount will increase each year as it is linked to inflation. You will be guaranteed to receive Feed In Tariffs for 20 years. Sell electricity back to the grid: if your system is producing more electricity than you need, or when you can’t use it, you can sell the surplus back to the grid providing further income of approx £75/year – or install a solar controller device that will help to heat your hot water using your surplus electricity. Cut your carbon footprint: solar electricity is a green renewable energy and doesn’t release any harmful carbon dioxide or other pollutants. A typical home solar PV system could save over a tonne of carbon dioxide per year – that’s more than 30 tonnes over its lifetime. With the energy watchdog OFGEM warning of higher fuel costs, take a look at Solar PV IT DOESN’T COST THE EARTH!

Summer Days Out

Here are a few ideas for some great days out this Summer

Land at Drayton Manor Park and Legoland offering rainy day guarantees.

Why not try something a bit daring at one of the UK’s outdoor adventure centres? Award winning Go Ape! Courses have sprung up all round Britain. They are high wire forest courses containing rope bridges, tarzan swings and zip slides up to 40 feet in the trees. Other outdoor pursuit centres offer the chance to try out water sports, abseiling, climbing, quad biking and many more activities.

Or you could take a trip to one of Britain’s castles. Some are presented in a very simple traditional manner, whilst others include animated wax work displays and regular

If you are looking for adrenaline of a different kind, you could visit a theme park. Alton Towers, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Thorpe Park are some of the largest and best known, but there are many others. Try to do some research before you go, to check that the park you are planning to go to has suitable rides for your party. Height restrictions often apply, and some focus on gentler rides for younger children, whilst others major on scary thrill rides. Some have other attractions in addition to the rides and have links with popular brands, such as Thomas

24

events involving jesters, jousting and an opportunity to try your hand at swordsmanship. A visit to a castle can provide the opportunity to learn about history, and many will enjoy the now popular audio guides that are often provided. Some

like Alnwick Castle have more recent history to thank for increased popularity. This glorious medieval castle has been the setting for many great films, including Harry Potter. Perhaps some animal magic would make your day more enjoyable. Britain has lots of great zoos where you can see a huge variety of animals and get an insight into the importance of conservation. Longleat and The West Midlands Safari Park are also long established favourites and offer the opportunity to drive past animals in larger more natural settings. There are lots of farm attractions too where you can feed the animals, hold chicks and lambs, as well as learning about farming. Monkey Forest at Trentham is one of the UK’s newer animal attractions. Others which have a focus on one type of animal include falconry centres, the donkey sanctuary, sealife centres and butterfly farms. See: http://www.visitbritain. com for lots more ideas. More Than Loft Ladders

Look up! And get more space at home for just £277

We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible.

The latest MTLL franchise to open covers the Nottingham area and is run by skilled local, Liam Hobbs, who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Liam. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £277 you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Liam provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! Call 0800 0359 880 or visit the website at www.morethanloftladders.co.uk

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...

Install a loft ladder and make more use of your loft!
