Hi everyone and welcome to the August issue of Spotlight magazine. Are we all loving the sun, or is it just a bit too much? I overheard someone recently saying “ I like it hot, but I don’t like it this hot!” Never satisfied are we. Pretty soon we will be complaining about the cold again! If you are a member of a club, organisation or association, help to get the word out by emailing me the information and we can advertise your meetings for free. If you run your own business, give me a call about featuring your own business in the magazine. Advertising in local magazines works and is low cost. It could be working for you. Spotlight magazine is delivered to 6,000 homes and businesses in the Mansfield South area each month, with similar magazines going to Central Mansfield, North Mansfield and West Bridgford. Cheap Electricity From Sunlight
S
olar panel electricity systems, also known as solar photovoltaics (PV), capture the sun’s energy using photovoltaic cells. These cells don’t need direct sunlight to work – they can still generate some electricity on a cloudy day. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which can be used to run household appliances and lighting. There is little or no maintenance required and they can be fitted to most properties – including east/ west facing roofs.
The benefits of solar electricity Cut your electricity bills: sunlight is free, so once you’ve paid for the initial installation your electricity costs will be reduced. A typical 16 panel 4KW system will generate approximately 3500KWh of electricity in a year. This equates to a £200 saving on your electricity bill (assumed 50% usage). Get paid for the electricity you generate: the government’s Feed-In Tariffs pay you up to £550/year TAX FREE! for the
electricity you generate, even if you use it. This amount will increase each year as it is linked to inflation. You will be guaranteed to receive Feed In Tariffs for 20 years. Sell electricity back to the grid: if your system is producing more electricity than you need, or when you can’t use it, you can sell the surplus back to the grid providing further income of approx £75/year – or install a solar controller device that will help to heat your hot water using your surplus electricity. Cut your carbon footprint: solar electricity is a green renewable energy and doesn’t release any harmful carbon dioxide or other pollutants. A typical home solar PV system could save over a tonne of carbon dioxide per year – that’s more than 30 tonnes over its lifetime. With the energy watchdog OFGEM warning of higher fuel costs, take a look at Solar PV IT DOESN’T COST THE EARTH!

What Can I Do For Free This Summer?
When the summer holidays are long but funds are short what are the options? You could take a trip to your local museum. Many areas have Council run museums and art galleries with no entrance fee. Frequently in school holidays, themed activities are run to help engage visitors. In addition to these general history and local interest venues, there are also many specialist free museums in the UK. Some of the most famous are in London and include the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Childhood. You might be surprised what you find as there are museums for all manner of things, including cheese making at Wensleydale, North Yorkshire, and Shoes at Street, Somerset. Or you could venture outdoors and enjoy some fresh air. Beaches offer a unique environment often with rock pools to explore and the opportunity to make sandcastles or play beach games. Even if the weather is less than favourable, if you wrap up warm you can still have lots of fun. You could organise a family game of rounders in your local park, take a picnic, sit and sketch the wildlife, trees or passers by, or maybe venture to a larger park or nearby forest and explore new paths, wildlife trails and exciting play areas.
8
You could take a bike ride along your local canal towpath, riverside or perhaps a disused railway track. There are now many special traffic free routes for cyclists. A trip to the local carnival or village fayre can also offer lots of fun. Many incorporate parades of colourful floats with occupants dressed up and have interesting displays from local clubs.
These events can offer the opportunity to get a real sense of your community and many have been running for hundreds of years. They may incorporate traditions such as Morris dancing, well dressing, or the newer trend of Scarecrow trails. You may find yourself contributing to charity, buying some local produce or even an ice cream if the sun is shining, but there is generally no entrance fee as they take place on the streets. There are also many free festivals. These are often music based, but also include riverside festivals and a Watercress festival in Arlesford. More Than Loft Ladders
Look up! And get more space at home for just £277
We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible.
The latest MTLL franchise to open covers the Nottingham area and is run by skilled local, Liam Hobbs, who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Liam. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £277 you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Liam provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! Call 0800 0359 880 or visit the website at www.morethanloftladders.co.uk

Choosing & Hanging Wallpaper
W
allpapering can be quite daunting and with some papers being quite expensive, I spoke to Anna Lodge from Harringtons Decorators for some tips:
4.Remove any wall fittings if possible. It makes it so much easier to hang paper when there are no obstructions in the way. 5.Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended soaking time. Over soaked paper can cause a number of defects resulting in it being very difficult or impossible to hang correctly. Ensure the same soaking time is kept to on each length.
1. When choosing your paper, remember non woven wall coverings are tear-resistant, washable, and breathable. Fabric wall coverings are less durable. Scrub able vinyl coverings offer the most durability and are easiest to clean.
6.If you want to paint or paper the ceiling then do these before you start on the walls and allow to dry fully
2.Don’t use patterned wallpaper if walls are structurally uneven, it will draw attention to the flaws. Make sure your walls are even and prepared well.
Here is a picture of how it should be done, Anna papered the walls in our new mirror showroom last month and we are delighted with the result. So if you need any professional help with your decorating, why not give Anna at Harringtons a call on 01159 792971 Alison Constantine. Atmospheric Interiors.

Hand Luggage Fashion
ith new budget holiday websites popping up every day, it’s becoming even easier to snap up a cheap last minute deal for a lovely sunny holiday. Once you’ve got your flights and hotel booked you’re ready to go – well, almost. The next thing to think about is your summer wardrobe. A simple way to save money before your holiday has even begun is to pack everything into a hand luggage sized bag so you don’t have to pay extra for hold luggage. Fitting a whole holiday’s worth of clothes in a small bag may seem a bit daunting but with some clever planning and mix and match outfits you don’t need to worry. The key to travelling light is to pack a base of classic items which go with anything and then add a small mix of garments and accessories to complement the simpler pieces. First of all you need the classic essentials. The first is a simple vest top: go for a colour that works well with the rest of your wardrobe whether that is blue, white, black or any other colour that you like. This can be paired with shorts or a skirt and can also be worn under a sheer blouse if the weather is a little cooler. The second item on the essentials list is a good pair of shorts. Denim shorts are an absolute classic and are in fashion year after year but if you’d rather opt for something else, there are
16
plenty of other choices: lightweight fabrics such as linen and cotton are perfect for hot summer days and come in a variety of styles and colours so you can find the right pair of shorts for you.
Hopefully the sun will make an appearance on your holiday so it’s a good idea to pack a couple of sundresses. There’s a huge selection of sundresses available on the high street so the choice is yours! Embrace the summer trends by trying a bold floral or tribal print. A knee length, V-neck sundress is flattering to many body shapes and will be suitable for most summer occasions. If you’ve got any special events planned, why not pack a maxi dress? The extra length adds instant glamour and can easily be dressed up with a clutch bag and statement jewellery or dressed down with a simple sunhat and sunglasses.
sensible comfy shoes for all the walking. Once you’ve got these basics sorted, it’s time to add the extra items. For example, it’s a good idea to pack a cardigan or lightweight jacket for the cooler summer evenings and it will be a very welcome extra layer for the journey home back to the UK. Add in a couple of floaty blouses, pretty skirts and the all-important swimwear and you’re ready for your holiday. Remember to leave a bit of space for the sun cream and any souvenirs you buy on your travels! Rhiannon Chown r_chown@ yahoo.co.uk
Speaking of accessories, getting the right shoes for your holiday is very important. It’s worthwhile investing in a good pair of sandals as they’ll last you for years and will go with any outfit. If you’re planning on doing some sightseeing, remember to pack some

Dealing With Dry Skin
hroughout the year we are all faced with different atmospheric conditions, and even conflicting domestic and work environments. In many people this can upset the natural moisture levels in our skin and result in dry skin. Holidays in drier climates may aggravate this condition and present quite a problem.
Seasonal changes in the skin are normal and more noticeable when the weather turns cold. For as yet unexplained reasons, there is a reduction in the natural moisturising factors of the skin. These changes are worse in women than in men and moreover the changes are greater as one ages. In women, hormonal changes occur as they age and the skin becomes relatively oestrogen progesterone deficient. This, in itself, is responsible for dryness in people who previously may never have suffered from dry skin. Change the way you clean your skin. Focus on gently cleaning without damaging the
uppermost horny layer of the skin. Soaps and abrasives easily destroy this layer that is so essential to maintain the waterproofing barrier of the skin. What to avoid if you have dry skin: Using soap on the damaged waterproofing layer Using water only on the skin Sporting activities in windy conditions, which dehydrate skin Excessive sun exposure, which aggravates dry skin Heated rooms without increasing the moisture levels. A bowl of water placed in front of a heater is the simplest, though not the most effective action Air conditioned environment, which aggravate dryness. Jenny Dunville

281 Restaurant & Rooms
281 Restaurant and Rooms was established in March 2012 on Nottingham Road. The original property was built around 1910 of local Mansfield sandstone as houses for successful merchants of the town. The hotel is privately owned by Lisa Griffiths & Liz Savage who have taken this opportunity to realise a long cherished dream of opening their own hospitality business in the area they live.
Rated 3 star by Visit Britain, this elegant hotel offers 19 bedrooms each with en-suite bath or shower room, direct dial telephone, flat screen TV and tea and coffee making facilities. Our refurbishment programme is well underway. The whole hotel has free wireless broadband. The fine dining menu incorporates the best of modern British with World influences and all of the food is freshly prepared on the premises. An extensive wine list complements the cuisine. For an informal meal, 281’s bar offers a comfortable alternative to the restaurant.
This casual dining area is a cosy spot that allows diners to enjoy the full range of food on offer in a less formal setting. Wine, dine, party and celebrate the night (or day!) away in style. The restaurant can provide a private space for functions including weddings, birthday parties, celebratory dinners or business lunches. Menus are designed specially with the chef to suit your preferences.
We are launching an autumn menu from 17th September, cooked by our award winning chef Roy Wood. Roy’s signature dishes are made from locally sourced ingredients and reflect his genuine passion for food, for example Seared scallops served with Spanish chorizo, marinated pears and a hint of lime, or another favourite, Pan-fried loin of lamb served pink with a truffle risotto, parmesan shavings and pan juices. Please come and enjoy the 281 experience. For more information call Liz or Lisa on 01623 622308. 281 BusCard - 2 sided_Layout 1 29/02/2012 19:07 Page 1

Kirkby-in-Ashfield Leo Club
A UNIQUE CLUB IN KIRKBY-IN-ASHFIELD A group of pupils from Ashfield School in Kirby-in-Ashfield are determined to make a difference in their local community. On Monday 3 June this group founded a new school-based Leo club. This is the only schoolbased Leo club in the East Midlands. A Leo club is part of the family of clubs that make up Lions Clubs International which is the largest club based voluntary service organisation in the world with 1.3 million members worldwide in over 200 countries and has the motto “We Serve”. Leos are youngsters aged between 12 and 18 who want to serve their community. On Monday the enthusiastic students swore their joining oaths and were and were with their badges by the Lions regional representative, supported by the President of Mansfield Lions Club, in front of an audience of parents, teachers and other Lions.
After an introduction by the school headteacher Richard Vasey, the Lions Clubs International National Leo Clubs Coordinator, Frank Marnell from Chester, gave an inspiring and amusing talk about Leos. The Lions District Governor for the East Midlands, Michael Phillips, gave a short talk about Lions and the Chairman of Ashfield District Council, Councillor Linford Gibbons, wished the new Leos good fortune. A Lions spokesman said “LEO stands for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity but it also stands for Lets Enjoy Ourselves and the Leos of Ashfield School have a unique opportunity to join together and help others in the community while retaining that fun element. They have already chosen a President for the year and have already carried out charity fund raising projects. They have plenty of ideas for fund-raising and future projects. So with the support of the school, a dedicated teacher who is a Lion herself, and the Mansfield Lions, the Leos are looking forward to a successful year of community service”. Help Reluctant Readers
A study published a while back and reported in The Teaching Times claimed that 42% of children have lost interest in reading by the age of 11. If that’s true it’s incredibly sad. Blame is apportioned to politicians, teachers, the TV and internet, but blame doesn’t achieve anything. Instead, as parents what can we do to encourage our children to engage with literature? Try these great tips to engage reluctant readers.
Let them see you reading! It sounds obvious but it works. Read some funny
bits from your own book aloud to them, or try an interesting newspaper article.
suit the characters. Lose your inhibitions and have fun with reading and your children will follow suit. Try a joke book or nonsense poetry books. Kids love jokes and rhymes, the sillier the better. They won’t even realise they are reading as they regale you with their newfound anecdotes and ditties.
Try to schedule a small part of the day for reading. It doesn’t even have to be them reading. My ten-year-old son still loves me to read to him… especially when I put on accents and voices to
Use the power of movies. My ten-yearold really engaged with reading when he saw the first Harry Potter movie. He read the book straight afterwards and realised how much richer in detail it was compared with the film. From then on he was hooked.

T
Electronic Cigarettes
hey taste, feel and in some cases look like the real thing, but that’s where the similarity ends. Electronic cigarettes don’t contain tobacco and tar which can turn conventional cigarettes into killers, and by the year end around 1 million UK smokers will have switched to e-cigarettes as a healthier alternative. So, what are they and how do they work? A typical cigarette is composed of three parts – a cartridge, an atomiser and a rechargeable battery.
Liquid nicotine (which can come in a variety of flavours) is stored in the cartridge and converts into vapour as it passes through the atomiser when the user
28
sucks. It is then absorbed through the mouth. Though it looks like smoke is being produced, what you see is largely water vapour. Electronic cigarettes produce no smoke, no smell and no ash.
Although e-cigarettes are less toxic than conventional cigarettes, they are not totally innocuous. Nicotine is a highly addictive drug and can raise blood pressure and accelerate heart disease. At present, there are no regulations on the purity or amount of nicotine contained in e-cigarettes, but it is generally accepted that the levels are lower than in conventional cigarettes. As yet there are no studies reporting on the safety
of e-cigarettes, but some experts claim that if all smokers in Britain made the switch, 5 million deaths could be prevented in people alive today. If you’re a smoker and are concerned about your health, then maybe you should consider using electronic cigarettes. But if you are a non-smoker, do not be tempted into trying them thinking that they are a safe way to smoke. The only sure way to avoid the effects of smoking is to avoid it completely!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor
in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
