Health and Wellbeing

A

E-asy does it

ncient Chinese and Indian medicines, with meridians and chakras, have long been aware that health and well being are dependent on the free flowing energies that are each one of us. Their practices, whether herbs, meditation, exercise, acupuncture, remove blockages in our energy systems that prevent the body from naturally healing itself, as do homeopathic and flower remedies and Reiki Healing. Try using my 5 E’s, one for each finger, to maintain your health and happiness. Eat right, only highly nutritious food, what you need so your energies remain free flowing, ensuring your body can perform its many complex tasks with ease. Check for food intolerances. Eat a great variety of vegetables and fruit. They are the antioxidants; carotene, lycopene, lutein, their colour a useful guide, needed to mop up the aging free radicals that our bodies are constantly bombarded with. They are the alkaline–forming foods that our blood needs to balance the many acid-forming foods we eat. Eat raw as often as possible. Essential enzymes are destroyed during cooking. Include at least one salad meal a day, with fruit, nuts and vegetable

sticks between meals. Obtain most of your fluids this way, and top up with water and herb teas between meals. Grow your own salad leaves and sprout seeds. Eat less. Most of us in the West eat more than we need, overburdening our digestive system, ageing us, making us physically and mentally tired and unable to function optimally. Check portion sizes. Go for quality not quantity. We need to experiment and challenge our habitual and conditioned way of eating. If sugar cravings are a problem use a chromium supplement. Exist in the present. Don’t shoulder the burdens of regret and guilt from the past. They deplete our energies, cause illness and prevent us from enjoying the present. Learn from past mistakes and try to move on. Forgive and forget. Choose to only remember the good times. You’ll be more focussed and able to cope with life’s challenges. Plan for the future but don’t live for it. Hope for the best and free yourself from your anxieties. Don’t keep longing for what you don’t have, be grateful and appreciate what you have. If needed, seek therapeutic help, as described above. Energise! Shake off the negativity. Choose to be happy by being purposeful and creative. Go out, help others, exercise, and appreciate nature. Choose absorbing activities that inspire and uplift you, releasing endorphins and providing a sense of achievement.

Don’t be too dependent on material things or other people. Be happy with yourself, as we’re meant to be, and then share this happiness with others. So start each day, the 5 E-asy way! Sue Blain

Fakin’ It!

ver since a bronzed Coco Chanel returned from her Mediterranean holiday in the 1920s, the tan has been the hottest summer fashion accessory. Women go ga-ga for that golden glow. Unfortunately dermatologists do not...and frankly I’m not wild about contracting skin cancer either. There are many things I will do in pursuit of beauty but risking my health isn’t one of them. So what is a girl to do? The only sensible way forward is to fake it. But, how can we achieve that gorgeous ‘just returned from St. Moritz’ glow rather than that ‘I’ve just been Tangoed’ day-glo! Well, there’s no denying that for a completely flawless finish a salon or a spa is your best option. The full treatment may include exfoliation, moisturising and airbrush bronzing. You’ll feel like a movie star afterwards...the only downside is the price. However, for a special occasion it’s well worth the outlay.

Move on to the hips, stomach and torso, then the shoulders and the arms: if you can enlist the help of your partner or a friend to reach the trickier bits, so much the better. For facial skin, use a preparation designed especially for this area.. Cleanse and exfoliate, but don’t moisturise as it may affect the results. You can apply a little moisturiser under the eyes as it’s more flattering to leave this area of skin slightly paler. Remove the tanner from your palms with a damp, rough flannel. Don’t forget to clean down the sides of each finger too. Finally, allow all areas to dry for ten-fifteen minutes before dressing and refrain from indulging in any activity which may make you sweat, at least for a few hours...you don’t want streaks!

For those of us without bottomless pockets, we’re left with the DIY option. Don’t be disheartened. A good finish is not hard to achieve, you just have to follow a few rules. Set aside some time where you won’t be interrupted. Shave your legs, then exfoliate your skin with a body scrub in the shower. Pay special attention to rough areas like elbows and knees. Dry skin absorbs more tanning lotion and orange bits are so not sexy. Rub a little Vaseline over your nails and cuticles to prevent them from staining. For the most natural results, choose a fake tan just a shade darker than your normal skin tone. Apply the tanner limb by limb. Start with your legs, smoothing the lotion over the shins and calves before lightly sweeping it over the ankles and tops of the feet.

Top Tips for Profile Pics

he last two month’s front cover photos have been supplied by Beverley Perkins LMPA, a local wedding and portrait photographer, who likes a bit of a challenge!

Bridgford, romp around the park with a football or if you’re really posh, and have a pool...I’m sure you’ve got the idea! Use a real smile! This is one of my key aims when I am photographing someone...’cheese’ just doesnt’ hack it. Get a fun conversation going with your friends, and get them to say or do something to make you laugh. A natural smile wins every time! Be Serious. if you’re aiming for something more serious, or even mysterious, try taking a picture of only a portion of your face. Include your favourite pet. If you don’t have one, nip down to Holme Pierrepont and feed the ducks! Not only will you get some great photos, but you’ll have a fun time into the bargain!

Bev has a small photographic studio in Nottingham, where she lives, with husband, 2 daughters and dog.! To check out her work visit her website at: www.portraitsathome.net This month she is offering some advice on a very popular topic for photographing.... yourself!

Avoid the deadly ‘red-eye’ When shooting with flash, by looking at a nearby light source just before the photo is taken, it will make your pupils shrink giving less opportunity for red eye.....if its too late why not have a bit of fun with some of that art software you’ve never used on your pc. Not only can you delete the red eye in one click but you can have a lot of fun, creating special effects - a bit of Andy Warhol for example!

One of the most popular uses of portrait photographs these days is for profile pictures on the web. Social networking things like facebook, flickr and linkedin all want you to upload your photo. If you want your profile picture to stand out and show a bit of personality, here are a few ideas to have fun with your photos: Let your personality shine! Choose your mood:- let’s face it, you’re a complicated person with many sides and many moods, and here’s your chance to share them all. Go ‘vogue’. Purse your lips; try a pout or just stick out your pierced tongue for all the world to see! Choose your background carefully! It can say a lot about you! If you’re sporty, why not pop to the tennis court in West

How to sell your car

I

t might be time to bid a fond farewell to a trusty workhorse that has served you well, or you might just want to get shot of a malevolent mechanical menace you wish you’d never laid eyes on! Either way, you need to make your soon-tobe-departed car as attractive to potential purchasers as possible. Whether you’re offering the vehicle for part exchange at a dealer, taking out an ad in the classified section of your local newspaper or placing it with an online sales service, it’s important that you get maximum value to put towards your new wheels. So here are four essential tips that every seller should adhere to: Say goodbye... No, we don’t just mean get out of the driver’s seat! Inevitably, you will have enjoyed, or endured, some sort of relationship with your car. That relationship is now at an end, so it’s time to clear the dash and remove any remaining traces. Sling your CDs into that box under the stairs, remove all boiled sweets from storage areas and consign lucky charms, cuddly toys and nodding dogs to the dustbin. You may think they are hilarious, but a buyer will view them as silly items that still mark the car as yours. Clean the machine... Give the car a thorough clean, inside and out. Pay particular attention to the steering wheel, switchgear and seat adjustment controls - the first things a potential buyer is likely to touch on a test drive. Clean the inside of the windows as well as the outside to let as much light into the cabin as possible. Spending a few pounds on proper car cleaning products is a sound investment don’t be tempted to make do with washing up liquid and an old tea towel. Try to avoid cleaning agents with a strong smell - it makes the fact that the car has only recently been tarted up far too obvious. Brush excess grime from the engine bay

12

but don’t be tempted to have the whole lot steam-cleaned, your engine bay should be tidy and cared for, but not too clean! Now, the boring bit... No matter how much elbow grease you expend on making the bodywork shiny and the wheels sparkling, it could all come to nothing unless you’ve put in some legwork on the paperwork. Hopefully, as a good owner you will have kept a comprehensive record of all the vehicle’s trips to the garage and will have a servicing record with plenty of reputable stamps and no blank spaces. Even if your records are incomplete, a thick pile of paper can provide buyers with valuable reassurance that they are dealing with someone who has taken care of the car and is not just selling it on after a short stint of problematic ownership. Do your homework... You are certainly not the only person currently selling a car and you’re unlikely even to be the only person in your area selling any particular model, so a little awareness of the marketplace can be a great help. One of the easiest and cheapest ways for you to find out the value of your car on the second-hand market at any one time is to find another one in the Auto Trader listings that is similar and take it from there. You can of course ask for as much as you like for your car, but unless it’s in line with the market value you will not sell it – it’s as simple as that. Good luck.

Covering The Bills

ou don’t stop spending money when you get ill or lose your job, and the mortgage still has to be paid if you die. Although having enough money in times of trouble won’t solve every problem, it will remove one of them and enable you or your loved ones to concentrate on what’s important, living.

a premium health rating that another underwriter would be more lenient with.

Adequate life assurance makes sure that those left behind aren’t left with a mountain of debt. There are so many different kinds of insurance and so many life assurance companies with similar offerings that it is just one of those things that we forget about but do you know what cover you have and is it still appropriate for your current situation? Is it Decreasing, Level, Whole of life, Guaranteed Premiums or reviewable premiums? No one provider can be the most competitive for all ages or lifestyles. If life assurance has been taken out with a tied provider without a market comparison you may well be paying a lot more than necessary or indeed be penalized for

Your mortgage provider may have arranged for life assurance when you took out the mortgage. It is a good idea to review this, as it may not be the most cost-effective option for you. You need a level of cover that is appropriate for your circumstances at a price you can afford. Having life cover over the amount of your Mortgage loan is also desirable, as this protects your loved ones from the worry of other expenditures in life and can also help to ensure your dependants have sufficient income replacement where pension funds have not had time to grow sufficiently. While it is rare to have too much life cover, care must be taken that life insurance wouldn’t take your estate over the Inheritance Tax Band devaluing the sum assured, this can be dealt with by simple trust forms and a financial adviser can help you get the best deal and ensure the right planning is in place, whatever happens.

Health and Wellbeing Be Prepared!

P

lanning your holiday is great fun. But while it’s exciting to choose new outfits and beachwear, spare a thought for your health. Your holiday might be spoiled if you’re not well enough to really enjoy it. Begin with a week’s detox. This is the perfect time to revisit those New Year Resolutions. With such a great incentive, how can you fail? Give your system a boost now and you’ll have the energy to cope with different foods, over-indulgence and tummy bugs.

Arnica 200c can help prevent jet lag, taken under the tongue, every 2 hours during flight. Arnica 30c is better for bruising. For any first-aid homeopathic remedies, take one 30c pill every 30 mins-2 hrs, depending on severity, for up to 6 doses. Seek medical advice if symptoms don’t improve. Happy holidays! Sue Blain

Cut down on alcohol and carbohydrates; eat healthy proteins and organic vegetables, including salads, and drink extra water to remove toxins. Take acidophilus, a probiotic, to correct the balance of bacteria in the gut. Prepare your skin for the sun: moisturise well and increase your intake of oily fish. Gentle exercise, stretches and skin brushing, will aid the detox process while toning up under-used muscles. Exercise outdoors and you’ll provide a gradual and moderate exposure to the sun. This will help protect your skin while on holiday - alongside your sun screen of course. You might want to consider a parabenfree preparation as this preservative has been subject to some controversy recently, mainly because it can mimic the hormone oestrogen. Post-detoxed and well prepared, you’ll now need less protection, just a small firstaid kit for any mishaps which might occur. Herbs, homeopathy and aromatherapy can help with any skin and digestive problems and the tiny containers will take up very little space.

18

First-aid remedies for digestive problems Propolis tablets - to clear food poisoning bugs Ginger - travel sickness Nux Vom 30c- over eating & drinking (hangovers) Arsen Alb 30c- diarrhoea, vomiting, anxieties Skin remedies Belladonna 30c -sunburn , headaches Apis Mel 30c- insect bites , stings, prickly heat Calendula cream-for scratches, cuts Lavender oil-sunburn, insect stings, repellent, aids sleeping Neem/Citronella oils-insect repellants

Garden View

G

Gone to Seed!

ardening is a hobby and, after a while, most people with hobbies find themselves experimenting. They get a bit creative and want to see if they can do something on the cheap, or for free, or simply find to out whether it’s possible to do something just for the simple pleasure of trying. Seed collecting falls into this category for me. Most seeds are not particularly expensive to buy, so why would I or anyone else want to collect our own? Well I can’t speak for anyone else, but I get a real buzz from collecting seed, knowing that I can perpetuate a favourite plant without any outside involvement. Sometimes I’ll collect seed with a fair degree of certainty that I’ll be able to raise hundreds of little seedlings, and sometimes I do it for the challenge, as not all seeds are easy to propagate. If you want to have a go at seed collecting (and be warned, it’s a highly addictive pastime) then here are a few tips. You will need: Large paper bags I had real problems locating these until I remembered eBay. I bought 100 large bags for around £3. Plastic bags won’t do as they retain moisture and cause the seeds to develop fungus or go mouldy. Felt pen - for labelling. This is important as you will forget what you’ve collected even if you think you won’t!

22

Box or trug - for carrying the bags of seeds around the garden. Small pair of scissors or secateurs – for snipping the heads. Choose a dry day with little or no wind. Select a healthy, pest and disease-free plant with seedpods which look as though they’re about to split. Label a paper bag (it’s much easier to do this first) then cut off the seedhead and turn it upside down into the bag. Place the bag into a dry place and wait for the seeds to ripen. Check regularly. When most of the seedpods have opened, tip out the contents on to a dry surface and separate all the seeds from any remaining bits of pod. Store the clean seeds in a small, labelled paper bag or envelope, in a cool dry place until ready to be used. Easy seeds to collect and grow Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist) Aquilegia (ladies bonnets) Papaver (Poppy) Digitalis Purpurea (Foxglove) Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) Cosmos bipinnatus (Cosmos) Lunaria annua (Honesty) You’ll soon discover many more. Happy collecting.

Computer

L

Computing on the Move ast month we looked at Documents on the move, but what about the new emerging computing format – the tablet PC?

The Tablet PC has been around for a number of years. In early days it was a laptop which had a fold flat touch screen, these are still available. Next came the iPad range of devices. The iPad, and now iPad2, set the standard for the new style thin and portable tablet computing. In recent months the Andriod Honeycomb 3 software has been released which has given rise to a lot of PC manufacturers providing Tablet computing – Acer, Toshiba, Motorola, Dell, HP to name but a few. So, what does the tablet PC give me. It is not to be thought of as a main computer replacement, but more of an extension to it. Their functionality sits somewhere between the laptop/desktop computer and a smart phone. They typically

have a 7 to 10 inch screen. Most have at least one camera, wifi and some 3G connectivity. They are very light, have good battery life and power up very fast and are ideal for internet browsing, emails, viewing photos, music, skype/ messenger type applications and low level gaming. They do not have a CD drive, and some do not have a USB port. Printing can be an issue, as you need to ensure that you have a printer that is compatible with them and that there is an APP to allow you to print. As they become more popular, more and more applications (APPS) will be available for them, and in time, development will be done to make them more attractive for businesses, but are currently more usefull in the home computing market. Dukeries U3A, Ollerton This has been a very busy month for the U3A. Some of our members have been on holiday in Scotland. After a horrendous journey through gale-force winds, the group arrived at the Loch Tummel Hotel. Visits were made to the Cairngorms Funicular Railway, the Black Watch Museum & Memorial, Scone Palace and the ancient city of Perth. Everyone had an excellent time – good food, lively company and enthralling visits. On home turf, the Sunday Lunch Club has been to Rufford Park Golf Club whilst the Weekday Lunch Club has visited Perlethorpe. The Book Club has read a Puzzle Solutions
