Local Ollerton writer and poet, Heather Hartley was recently chosen to have her work showcased in a new book out later this year. Heathers work along with nine other poets is published in a book entitled Ten Of the Best, which features new poets from across the UK. Heather says” I’m very happy and excited about this venture. I could not believe it when I was selected for the final ten. I see writing as a way of escaping the boundaries of everyday life. Writing can take you beyond the normal and into unexplored realms. Heather writing under the pen name of Heather Jackson, also has a collection of horror and fantasy poems available on kindle. This book entitled Soul Cemetery is the latest addition to a growing catalogue of work. Soul Cemetery can be explored on Amazon and Facebook.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth

is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show

how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Computer Advice

This month I would like to advise you about a scam which has even had national press in the past. It all starts with a cold caller trying to gain access to your computer. These people will call up and say something like, “Hello Mr. Jones, I am calling from Microsoft / XZY PC Support / UK Government etc.. (An official sounding body of some description). We have a report that says you have a number of viruses on your PC and these are being sent out to other uses” Do Not Believe Them – They do not even know you have a PC. From here, they will try to get you to allow them to have remote access to your computer. Do Not Let Them. If you do, then once on your PC they will try to load programs to stop you using it and then try to get you to spend between £50 and £150 for them to fix the problem, which did not exist in the first place. They may become very forceful and insist on you allowing them access. Do Not Let Them. Ask them for their name, phone number and company and advise them that you will call them back after speaking with the Police. After this, they will drop the call and hopefully not call you again.

18

If you have unintentionally let them have access to your PC, disconnect the internet connection – switch off your router and / or switch off or unplug your PC as soon as you can; even if they are on the PC. Then call your normal IT support person to have a look over the PC. Your IT support person may have licensed remote support software to enable them to access your pc as required. This is OK if you know them and you have phoned them to logon and help you before, but DO NOT allow unsolicited callers to do so, even if you think that they sound OK. If you have given out any bank details - call you bank immediately and advise them. If you have been the subject of this scam and you don’t have a support person to help you, give me a call below and I will be more than happy to assist you.

Lifestyle & Leisure Don’t Forget Fido!

I

n the excitement of preparing for a holiday or weekend away, don’t forget to make arrangements for your pets! There are several options to ensure your pet is cared for properly - leave them with friends or family, hire a pet-sitter, or board them. As a change of routine can be very stressful to pets, asking a responsible and familiar family member or friend to care for them may be the best solution. However, if this is not possible, the next best thing might be to employ a pet-sitter who would visit your home to feed, clean and exercise your pet. Be sure to meet your sitter before employing them, ask for references and police checks and make sure they have insurance.

If you decide to board your pet, take time to find a kennel, cattery or small animal boarder that will suit your pet. Pay a visit beforehand and check that they are licensed, insured, and that the facilities are secure, clean, dry and draught free. Also check that the animals look clean, happy and healthy. Whatever arrangements you decide on, be sure to choose someone responsible and give them clear instructions about diet, exercise, medication and how to socialise with your pet. Now go and enjoy your holiday, confident that your pet will be in safe hands! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

News from your MP

I

Mark Spencer MP

have said to you before that for me one of the best bits of being an MP is being able to share Parliament, whether it be with schools and colleges or constituents and charities, and the 3FF, or the Three Faiths Foundation has been another brilliant way to bring voters into Parliament to engage with politics. Each year since I was elected, I have sponsored three students from various religious backgrounds through 3FF who describe themselves as running “education, engagement and action programmes that bring diverse communities together”. The idea is to engage young people early on both in politics and with other young people of different faiths and I’ve found the programme to be extremely positive. I think it’s really important to support organisations and charities like 3FF but I know locally that many smaller groups can struggle through all the red tape that seems to go alongside doing a good deed these days. I’m pleased to see that the Cabinet Office, who are responsible for the voluntary sector, are aware of the problem and I raised the issue of excessive paperwork and of unnecessary CRB checks with the Minister for Civil Society Nick Hurd during Question Time recently. Nick Hurd has undertaken to reduce this burdensome paperwork and I hope that will take some of the pressure off; when people are trying to do the right thing and help their communities, it is only fair that Government does its best to support them.

don’t pull my weight, and I hope I proved that with my participation in Macmillan Cancer’s Tug-of-War last week where the House of Common’s team pitted their combined tonnage against the House of Lords. I am delighted to say that we enjoyed a magnificent and undisputed victory as well as raising money for a brilliant charity. Any regular readers will know that cancer charities are a cause close to my heart and after losing a close friend to the disease last year, a group of us have decided to cycle from Whitehaven to Robin Hood’s Bay, coast to coast over a total of 170 miles to raise money for cancer research at the Nottingham Breast Institute. Various uncharitable comments were made when I announced my intention to friends and family but following a series of rather punishing training sessions (punctuated by the odd pub visit), I hope we’ll be ready to go. If you would like to sponsor me, you can do so through my Just Giving page http://www.justgiving. com/Mark-Spencer-MP or you can donate £1 by texting “£1 FRWQ64” to 70070.

Now I would never like it to be said that I

R

Recycling Ollerton & Boughton

ecycling Ollerton and Boughton, or ROB as they are more widely known, offer work training placements to Adults with Learning Difficulties which help to develop skills that can be transferred into both paid and voluntary positions as well as increasing confidence and self esteem. The people who attend gain these skills by their involvement in the fortnightly recycling collections that are made to 10 communities in the area and around 90 businesses that use ROB to collect recyclable waste. Student placements at Recycling Ollerton and Boughton have for some years come by way of Nottinghamshire County Councils’ Learning Disability Teams. One of the aims of some of these referrals is to equip people who have learning disabilities with skills that will help them progress and flourish in everyday life. This can mean the development of skills that to most of us would seem menial, like crossing a road, but to somebody who has little understanding of the dangers involved then this is a massive skill. Others have needs in the development of social skills in a working environment that the staff at R.O.B. can work on. Two R.O.B. students are currently at the start of a very big journey. David Barrett is switching 2 of his days at R.O.B. for 2 days working as a volunteer at Walesby Forest Activity Centre. His duties will involve the organisation of recyclables which will later be collected by his R.O.B. colleagues and the upkeep of recreation and decorative areas near the entrance to the centre. For a transitional period, David will be supported by R.O.B. staff as well as the team at Walesby Forest. David’s approach to his tasks will be very professional and he will endeavour to do a first class job. Ian Sinclair, Director of the centre has been very generous with his time and provision of

24

suitable support for David whilst on site. Another of R.O.B.’s students, Steven Mason who has Aspergers Syndrome will shortly begin working part time at Centre Parcs Holiday Village alongside the Housekeeping teams. With support from his family and R.O.B. staff, Steven has successfully negotiated the Centre Parcs recruitment process and has had the good fortune to have been offered a job. Both R.O.B. and the County Councils’ “i-Work” team will ensure that Steven has plenty of support in dealing with the transition. R.O.B. is very proud of the steps that these two young men have taken and wish them all the success that they deserve. In the last few days, the R.O.B. team will have cheered and waved their flags as the Olympic Torch made its’ journey through Boughton. The bunting that everybody made to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee got a second outing in celebration of this event which we may never see again. If you require a recycling box and bags or a business collection, please contact R.O.B. on 01623 863955, email: info@ recyclingollerton.co.uk or visit our website at www.recyclingollerton.co.uk

Home-Start Dukeries

ome-Start Dukeries is a charity based in Edwinstowe which has been providing support to local families with children under the age of five for the last 30 years in Ollerton, Blidworth, Bilsthorpe, Clipstone, Edwinstowe and surrounding areas. Home-Start Dukeries supports families who are experiencing difficulties, this may be due to isolation, post-natal illness, lone parenting, coping with children with special needs or a range of other reasons. Our support is carried out by volunteers visiting families in their own homes, offering friendship and helping families to access community groups and other services. Last year 56 families were given individual one-to-one support by our volunteers and one person really can make a difference. Home-Start Dukeries home-visiting volunteers come from many different backgrounds and vary in age but all are either parents themselves or have parenting experience and are carefully selected for their friendliness and understanding.

Our volunteers constantly talk about the personal satisfaction that they get from supporting parents to give their children the best start in life. All volunteers attend a course of preparation before being linked with families and there is ongoing support from our Co-ordinators Jo and Marie. We have a preparation course starting soon in your area. If you are able to give a few hours a week to offer friendship and support and make a real difference to local families we would love to hear from you, please contact us on 01623 823353 for more information or visit our website at www.home-startdukeries.org

Rotary Club of Sherwood Forest

he Queens Diamond Jubilee lighting of the Ollerton Beacon: Sherwood Forest Rotarians worked closely with the Ollerton & Boughton Town Council to organise the lighting of the beacon at the Ollerton Pit Woods. As several hundred people of all ages, families, grandparents and children in buggies made their way up the hill to the Beacon. Rotary provided a transport shuttle service up and down the hill for those who found the climb difficult. A big thank you goes to all who took part and to those who joined in the evenings celebrations. To Malcolm & Jill Waring who provided the PA system and a big screen that kept everyone entertained through enabling us all to see the live Jubilee concert from outside Buckingham Palace and the Queen lighting the last beacon. Jill also served teas & coffee raising funds for Cancer Research. John Hand assisted members of the Town Council and staff build the beacon out of discarded pallets.

staying to the very end to damp down the fire. Members of St John’s Ambulance were on hand for any emergency and The Ollerton Drum Corps players led the procession of onlookers back down the hill at the end of the evening. Rotary Club members were delighted and privileged to take part in this historic event that was part of 4,200 beacons lit world wide in celebration of Queen Elizabeth ll Diamond Jubilee. Find out more about our Rotary club by coming to one of our Wednesday meetings at South Forest Leisure Centre at 7.30pm most weeks. Give me a call and come along. Mary Brown 01623 825607
