Health and Wellbeing Be Prepared!
P
lanning your holiday is great fun. But while it’s exciting to choose new outfits and beachwear, spare a thought for your health. Your holiday might be spoiled if you’re not well enough to really enjoy it. Begin with a week’s detox. This is the perfect time to revisit those New Year Resolutions. With such a great incentive, how can you fail? Give your system a boost now and you’ll have the energy to cope with different foods, over-indulgence and tummy bugs.
Arnica 200c can help prevent jet lag, taken under the tongue, every 2 hours during flight. Arnica 30c is better for bruising. For any first-aid homeopathic remedies, take one 30c pill every 30 mins-2 hrs, depending on severity, for up to 6 doses. Seek medical advice if symptoms don’t improve. Happy holidays! Sue Blain
Cut down on alcohol and carbohydrates; eat healthy proteins and organic vegetables, including salads, and drink extra water to remove toxins. Take acidophilus, a probiotic, to correct the balance of bacteria in the gut. Prepare your skin for the sun: moisturise well and increase your intake of oily fish. Gentle exercise, stretches and skin brushing, will aid the detox process while toning up under-used muscles. Exercise outdoors and you’ll provide a gradual and moderate exposure to the sun. This will help protect your skin while on holiday - alongside your sun screen of course. You might want to consider a parabenfree preparation as this preservative has been subject to some controversy recently, mainly because it can mimic the hormone oestrogen. Post-detoxed and well prepared, you’ll now need less protection, just a small firstaid kit for any mishaps which might occur. Herbs, homeopathy and aromatherapy can help with any skin and digestive problems and the tiny containers will take up very little space.

Swim With Your Baby
S
wimming with your baby sounds lovely. And it is. In fact, it’s one of the most memorable, thrilling and bonding things the two of you will ever do. But, along with the fun and great social aspects, there’s a lot of technical stuff to consider if you want to get the most from it. Which is why lots of parents choose to sign up to structured swimming lessons, like those offered by Water Babies, the UK’s largest baby swim school in the East Midlands. Water Babies credits its success to three main ingredients, all of which of which have put them at the forefront of the industry. Extraordinary instructors - world-class professionals, passionately delivering a uniquely structured programme in a fun way that aims to teach parents how to teach their baby to swim. It takes more than 50 hours of work in the pool, at least 25 assessed lessons and 5 lots of internal and external exams to pass to be an instructor for Water Babies.
An extraordinary programme of lessons which is carefully structured – you wouldn’t ever want to start watching a film halfway through. “That’s the reason why our courses have a beginning, middle and carefully monitored progression that will see them swimming as soon as they are physically able - usually around thirty months, explains Marie. Extraordinary results which speak for themselves. Technical expertise is one of the reasons why we’ve won four national awards – the first baby swimming company to do so. Three of the East Midlands instructors were also nominated as What’s On 4 Little Ones “Outstanding Class Leaders – something Marie is very proud about! Water Babies run classes in NG2 at Skylarks and West Bridgford School. For more information please visit www.waterbabies.co.uk or phone 01636 815567

Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid
he standard Toyota Prius has proved immensely popular with the public, celebrities and company car drivers alike. Whether it’s the low running costs or the thought that you’re saving the planet, there’s no denying that the Japanese company came up with a winning formula in the Prius. Now Toyota has gone one step further and developed a plug-in version. It’s still a conventional hybrid, with a 1.8-litre petrol engine in the front and a battery pack in the back, but it’s now possible to charge the battery from an electric car charging point. That means that the latest Prius can cover 12.5 miles using electric power alone - as opposed to the mere 1.2 miles of the current model. That doesn’t sound like a huge amount, but according to Toyota it’s enough to cover the majority of daily commutes, particularly in central London. It also means that the Prius PHV (Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle) will return an incredible 108.6mpg and emit only 59g/km of CO2, so it’s super clean and unbelievably cheap to run. From July, 20 Prius PHVs will take to the streets of London, but they will be run by a select few - namely employees at Sky and News International, two of Toyota’s big company car customers, along with staff at Transport for London, the Metropolitan Police and the Government Car and Despatch Agency. You won’t be able to buy one until early 2012. Is it any good? The PHV is virtually identical to the standard Prius inside and out. The only exterior difference is a small rectangular cap located just above the front passenger side wheel arch. That’s where you plug in the charger for the battery. The only notable change inside is a slightly higher boot floor due to the bigger battery, but it’s difficult to notice and barely eats into the boot space. The plug-in model is also 130kg heavier than the existing Prius.
88
With the petrol engine and the electric motor working together the Prius pumps out 134bhp and it will hit 62mph in 13.7 seconds with a top speed of 112mph. As with the looks, it’s pretty much identical to the standard Prius behind the wheel. You’ll struggle to get the petrol engine to kick in at town speeds though, as the car silently sails along using electric power only. The motor releases all its pulling power from zero revs, so the Prius is actually quite nippy around town and ideal for keeping up with the cut and thrust of city traffic. It even tells you how eco-friendly you are by displaying an image of a growing forest on the screen in the dash to represent how little CO2 the car is emitting. Summary If Toyota can get the price right the Prius PHV could be a phenomenal success. Such low running costs are hugely appealing and the Prius is ideal for city dwellers with a short but congested commute. It makes far less sense for regular motorway drivers, but that’s not who Toyota is gunning for. If the trials go well and the company can sell the car with a reasonable price tag, then it could well be as successful as the current Prius - if not more so. Jack Carfrae

Lifestyle & Leisure Sun Protection
B
ronze is beautiful right? Who doesn’t yearn for sunkissed summer skin? With the application of a little common sense and a lot of sun tan lotion there’s no reason why we can’t enjoy the sun assuming we get some of course! Is there anyone left who doesn’t know that sunbathing with too little skin protection is foolhardy and potentially dangerous? As well as being painful sunburn can be a prelude to skin cancer later in life. Sunburn is the damage caused to skin by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Sadly for us Brits UV rays are not blocked by cloud cover so we should always use a sunscreen, even if the sun doesn’t actually make an appearance. The sun’s rays are strongest between 11am and 3pm, so use this time to take a break in the shade. Sunburn is not just a holiday problem though. The quickest and easiest way to burn is when you are not really aware of being exposed to the sun. A children’s sports day; gardening or just walking the dog are all potential sunburn situations. Australians have a fabulous campaign to counteract the effects of the strong Antipodean sun. We would do well to adopt their effective catchphrase in the UK: “Slip, Slop, Slap “, to remind us to slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat. If you know you are going to be exposed to the sun for
10
several hours, wear a wide-brimmed hat, a loose long-sleeved shirt and long trousers or a flowing skirt. Baseball caps may be ‘trendy’ but don’t provide the necessary protection for the delicate skin on the back of the neck. Choose a ‘Foreign Legion’ style hat instead with cloth that hangs down at the back. Poor application of sunscreen is a common way to get sunburnt. Areas often overlooked are inside the top of the arms; tops of the ears and at the edges of clothes and swimwear. Apply sunscreen generously and reapply regularly, especially after swimming or exercise. Take extra care with children because their skin is extremely delicate. Use a total sun block or keep them out of the sun completely. Much has been written about the effectiveness of sunscreen recently and conflicting evidence abounds. To be safe, choose a minimum of 15 SPF for skin that tans easily. If you have fairer skin you’re more at risk from the sun’s UV rays so use a sunscreen with a higher factor. Some medicines, including some antibiotics and antidepressants, can increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunburn. Ask your GP for information if you are concerned. So - if you crave honey tones rather than lobster reds this year, simply follow the golden rules. Suki North

George Gale
eorge Gale was born in Nottingham in 1960, and enjoyed a happy family childhood in a small Nottinghamshire village. His father was also a talented artist who inspired him to follow a similar path. On leaving Art College during the late 1970s, at the time of the miners’ strikes and the three-day working week he had no option but to put away his painting palette and find work.
George’s compositions now adorn the walls of clergymen, politicians, corporate directors and military academies.
After working in a number of industries George realised that in order to follow his dream he had to make an important decision. George chose to commit himself fully to his passion for fine art and became a full time artist, a decision he has never regretted. ‘My animal creations have been evolving

The Young Enterprise Scheme
oung Enterprise is a government funded scheme, helping sixth form students to set up their own business.
BandWagon from West Bridgford Sixth Form have created a company to make the process of designing, ordering and receiving festival-style wristbands accessible to consumers. They found that festivalstyle wristbands are overwhelmingly popular with the younger generation. They targeted this new craze, and have provided wristbands for film release’s, football clubs and music festivals. Their partnership with Nottingham Forest to provide them with wristbands as official merchandise was one of their greatest achievements. BandWagon is a group of 13 sixth form students, with two Managing Directors – Rachel Edmonds and Fraser Edwards. Rachel Edmonds said “It’s a common

Young Enterprise is a nationwide competition, and BandWagon have stormed through four heats to become the Best Company in the East Midlands. Fraser Edwards commented “BandWagon has achieved so much for a student company. Becoming the Best Company in the East Midlands and sweeping up nine awards through the process is really a signal that our hard work has paid off”. They are now competing at National level, travelling to London to undertake the last stage of the competition from 12th - 14th July. Lifestyle and Leisure A Good Read Gig – Simon Armitage Simon Armitage is best known as a poet but he is also an accomplished lyricist, reviewer and all round storyteller. Subtitled ‘The Life and Times of a Rock Star Fantasist’, it documents his experiences with music – from his early listening habits, through teenage obsessions and on to his final acceptance as an adult of the fact that he will never be a rock star - swiftly followed by his decision to form a band and attempt to become just that. Whilst this is an ideal book for dipping into – most of the sections can be read out of sequence – it is almost impossible to stop once you begin. Each anecdote leads on to another: from the experience of selling a guitar on E-bay to memories of school domestic science lessons.
Part observation, part autobiography, the stories are often laugh out loud funny, yet the next page will bring a moment of sadness, even tragedy. In particular, the lyrics from ‘Songbirds’ and ‘Feltham Sings’, the two musical documentaries in which Armitage turns the stories of prisoners into songs, are intelligent, wellcrafted and heartbreaking. For many, it is the recognition of themselves in the tales that Armitage tells that creates the greatest sense of engagement. Readers of a certain age will cringe as he recalls his punk phase (and thank their mums that their 18th birthday cake was not quite as unusual) and then realise that they too are now amongst the oldest gig-goers. This is also very much a book about Yorkshire. But even if you don’t get the reference to Corporation Pop, it is handily explained.. All in all, an excellent read – either at one sitting or as a pick and mix view of modern life.

Hobbies.......Who Needs em?
D
o you sometimes feel as though you live your life for everyone else and never have any time left over just for you? Or maybe you’re recently retired after a busy working life and finding it difficult to fill those empty hours. You need a hobby. My dictionary defines ‘hobby’ as ‘an activity or interest pursued for leisure or relaxation and not as a main occupation.’ There have been many scientific studies over the years which show that people who participate regularly in hobbies live longer, healthier lives. This beneficial effect seems to be independent of other factors such as general health or how wealthy you are. In psychology-speak, hobbies are, a modern expression of suppressed primordial instincts! What this means is that we are essentially pack animals and that we like to belong to a group or a tribe, even those of us who consider ourselves loners. Think about it for a second. Many hobbies do involve belonging to a specific social group or club, with rules and structure: golf, football, train spotters etc. Even anti-social people often spend hours gaming on their pc with other gamers, or blogging to other like-minded folk.
weekend, it’s our imagination which is key to the final outcome. The second quality is our need to drive forward or push boundaries. Whatever our hobby, we’re always striving for improvement: can we obtain that particularly rare stamp; can we climb a higher mountain; can we take a better photograph? While we’re using our imaginations or pushing ourselves that bit further, our hobby acts as a release valve for the stresses of modern life. It’s difficult to worry about your boss or the household bills while you knit, play guitar or swim. So where do you start when choosing a hobby? There is an old saying that everyone ought to have three hobbies: an intellectual one; a physical one and a spiritual one. Modern life doesn’t leave much time for three hobbies but it’s still a good starting point and some hobbies can combine two or even all three of those desirable attributes. Bird watching, for instance combines intellectual and physical, as you’ll learn about birds and get out and about to find them. Yoga combines physical and spiritual attributes. Get creative: make a list of things which interest you and design your hobby to fit your lifestyle. You never know what you might achieve.
However, there’s more to a hobby than belonging. Hobbies allow us to tap into two qualities which are fundamentally human. The first is our capacity for imagination. Whether we’re creating something beautiful, like a quilt, or painting, or designing a new layout for our train set, or planning a route for a hill-walking

Plant a Pavement! a wonderful scent when crushed under foot. Thyme has a beautiful deep, pungent scent, much sweeter than the dried herb we all have in our kitchen store cupboard. Camomile smells delicious and fruity.
o, I
haven’t taken leave of my senses. Pavement planting is very now. A few years ago we all wanted pristine pathways. Lines and minimalism ruled. But life gets in the way and minimalism is such darn hard work: all that weeding and scrubbing away at the algae, then a paving stone cracks and ruins the whole effect. Who can be bothered? Make a plant pavement and you’ll be in good company. Apparently The Prince of Wales has one at Highgrove. There, creeping thymes sprout between York paving slabs. Ok, it’s all on a terribly grand scale, but we can reproduce a little of that in our own garden. There are many suitable carpeting plants. Creeping thymes come in a variety of beautiful colours, from blue-grey foliage to yellow variegated forms, and the flowers range through pinks, purples and white. A camomile lawn is a lovely idea, but it’s time-consuming while establishing because of all the hand weeding involved. However, camomile grows happily among paving stones and gravel. It’s probably best to choose the non-flowering variety ‘Treneague’ because, although the daisylike flowers of other varieties are pretty, they grow a bit too high for a path. The beauty of both thyme and camomile when grown on a path is that they release
22
Another suitable plant which releases fragrance as you walk past is pennyroyal, a creeping mint. There are lots of alpines and rock plants which could have been designed as pavement plants. Many will thrive in the well-drained, impoverished soil between paving slabs. Saxifrages and saginas are particularly good for this. The old stand-by, cerastium, more commonly known as Snow-in-summer, will grow pretty much anywhere, but needs rigorous control or it will take over the whole garden! All carpeting plants like well-drained soil and full sun. Plant about 30cm apart; water the plants in and apply a mulch of pea shingle or gravel This locks in moisture and suppresses weeds. Your pavement plants will clothe your pathway or drive and soften its appearance. They’ll provide colour and scent and withstand all but the heaviest traffic. So make like Royalty and plant a pavement today...so much nicer than plain old concrete.

HomeComputer and Garden Advice
Restoring features in your home Oldoriginal Computers

egularly, I get asked on how to dispose of my old computer safely. If they are too old or are beyond repair, I would recommend that you remove the old computer disk first.
are extracted using an electrolysis process melted down into gold bars and sent back to the electronics or medical industries. You gold tooth filling could once have been a computer processor!
On a laptop, the hard drive can usually be found underneath a small flap on the underside of the computer which will be accessible by a couple of screws. The hard drive on the laptop is around 3”x4” (the size of an iPhone). On a desktop PC, you should take the side off the computer. The hard drive will normally be mounted in the bottom half of the PC. It is around 4” x 6” in size normally with a black bottom and silver top.
Now you are left with the hard drive which holds your information. If you can prise the top off of the drive unit, you will find a small metal disk like a mini cd. You should destroy this as much as you can, scratch the surface, drill holes in it, cut it into bits – but be carefull of sharp edges. Once destroyed, it should be recycled at the council tip again.
Once you have taken the hard drive out of the computer, the old computer can now be disposed of safely at one of the Rushcliffe Waste Disposal sites such as Langar, without the worry of any of your old data being retrieved. Here the computer, monitors, printers etc will be put into a dry container and recycled properly. On a recent TV programme about computer recycling, it was shown that the gold coating on the main processors connectors

If the PC is not beyond repair and you want to give it to a friend or relative, I would strongly advise having the PC hard drive re-formatted and the operating system re-loaded first. By doing this, you are minimising the risk of your data falling into the wrong hands again – the person that you give the PC to, may not go through the hard drive destruction process as well as you. Community Information Transition West Bridgford
Solar Rushcliffe takes off!
s part of Transition West Bridgford a group of local residents have set up the Solar Rushcliffe Initiative.
For the month of July and August only, two senior architectural students of Nottingham University, Rain Luo and James Rixon, supervised by local resident and lecturer David Nicholson-Cole will start by mapping the areas of West Bridgford identifying good PV potential and giving free advice to householders of the costs and payback. They will work on leaflets and letters to send to residents and have open air ‘Solar Surgeries’ on Central avenue on several Saturdays during the summer months. RecentlyTransition West Bridgford organised the West Bridgford Eco House tour, (www.wbecohouses.co.uk) where some of the local home owners who already use alternative technologies, opened their doors to the general public to give them a chance to get first hand feedback. There was plenty of interest and we hope with David’s new initiative we can get even more people to join this growing group of micro generators.

This initiative is a partnership project of Rushcliffe BC, West Bridgford Transition, University of Nottingham, and Energy Saving Trust. Please check out the website as it progresses. Let’s make West Bridgford into a ‘swarm’ of home power generators, collectively equal to a powerstation so that we can become less dependent on oil and more resilient as a community. Do you want free energy in years to come? This could be the time for a rapid piece of ‘Ecovation’ to your house. It could even be the best investment that you can currently make - in excess of 8%. Email rushcliffesolar@gmail.com advising them off your Postal Code and Housenumber, and any other relevant details such as trees, slope, boundary conditions, shared ownership, for a rapid estimate of the possibilities. If your house has changed since Googlemaps aerial photos were taken, please include that. Please make use of this of this fantastic FREE service!
