efore you head off in search of the sun this summer, make sure your car is prepared for the trip with these eight essential checks:

1. Make sure your car isn’t due for a service or MOT while you’re away. If there’s anything that doesn’t feel quite right, get it looked at well before your journey. 2. Just before you go, check the oil and coolant levels, and top up the screen wash 3. Measure your tyre pressures to ensure a smooth and fuel-efficient ride. If you are carrying a heavy load, the tyres may need to be at a higher pressure. 4. Examine your wiper blades and replace them if they are cracked or worn.

6

You can clean them with a cloth dipped in screen wash. 5. Check all the car’s exterior lights are working, including the fog lights. 6. Clean the windows and mirrors. 7. Take with you supplies of oil, water, antifreeze and screen wash, and a spare tyre. If you are travelling in Europe, you will also need headlamp beam adapters, an alcohol breathalyser, GB plate, spare bulbs, a warning triangle and reflective vests. 8. And finally, make sure you have details of your breakdown service and insurance handy, so if you do have a problem you can get it sorted out as quickly as possible.

I don’t know how he does it. When it comes to packing for holidays it takes my husband four minutes flat. I look enviously at his little pile of shorts, T-shirts and underwear and wonder where I am going wrong, as I wrestle with zips and straps in a determined effort to squeeze everything in. Many of us do it - pack too much when we go on holiday - then end up wearing the same few items all week. So how can we make the job easier, quicker and (with ever stricter baggage allowances), cheaper? The answer is to remember that ‘less is more’ and to take only things we really love to wear in a capsule wardrobe that will cater for every occasion. The first step is to envisage how you see yourself spending your holiday. If it’s mainly sunbathing, all you need for the daytime is swimwear – a couple of bikinis per week plus a well cut swimsuit for genuine swimming or diving – flip flops and a loose fitting shirt to cover you up on the way to and from the beach or pool. If you plan on sightseeing or shopping, pack some comfortable sandals or pumps and a pair of shorts, cut off trousers or a skirt (neutral colours would be most versatile), and a

Packing Tips selection of coloured tops. Before deciding on which ones, lay them out and match them up. Choose colours and styles that go together, so that you can make up multiple outfits simply by switching items around.

Sarongs are also a great choice as they are both lightweight and versatile and may be used as a skirt, dress or wrap, depending on how they are tied.

tote bag onto the plane and afterwards use it for the beach, or when you go shopping. Follow these tips and you shouldn’t go far wrong, but if you do, after your holiday write down all the items you ended up wearing (or that you wish you could have worn!) and use this as a guide next time you pack. Scarves make a good alternative and can also be used to wrap around and protect hair. A wide brimmed hat will shield your face and hair from the sun, and is also a great fashion accessory. Some fashion experts suggest you take as many dresses as you can fit in. Teamed up with jewellery, a clutch bag and heels they are great for evenings out, and are still suitable for daywear when worn with flatties and a tote bag. Remember to take at least one warm item for chilly evenings or windy locations. Don’t forget to pack a couple of pairs of sunglasses in different shapes to create a varied look. Finally, take an oversized

Bailey’s Ice Cream

July is National Ice Cream Month so why not try this deliciously creamy and very grown-up version Serves 6-8 Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes Chilling time: Over night + freezing time (30mins- 3 hours depending on method used)

Ingredients 480ml whole milk 4 large egg yolks 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Method

Pour the milk into a medium size, heavy bottomed saucepan. Add 100g of the sugar. Place over medium heat, stirring continuously, until the mixture registers 77C on a cooking thermometer. If you don’t have a thermometer the milk should be just bearable to dip your finger into…be careful! In a crock or stainless steel medium-size bowl, whisk together the 4 egg yolks and remaining 50g of sugar until foamy and slightly thick. Very slowly add half of the hot milk to the eggs, whisking continuously. Pour this egg mixture back into the sauce pan with the remaining hot milk and return to the stove top on a low-medium heat. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon or heatproof rubber spatula until the mixture reaches 85C on the thermometer or if you have no thermometer is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon or spatula. Take care to make sure the mixture does not boil. Remove from the heat. If it’s not completely smooth whisk it well before proceeding.

10

150g granulated sugar 240ml double cream 4 tbsp Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur

Pour the double cream into a clean, large stainless-steel or glass mixing bowl set over an ice bath. Pour the heated custard mixture through a fine mesh sieve or strainer into the cold cream. Add the vanilla extract and stir until fully incorporated. Stir occasionally until the mixture has fully cooled. This should take about 1/2 hour. Remove the mixing bowl from the ice bath, dry off the bottom of the bowl if necessary, cover with plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours or overnight. Stir in the Baileys. Pour this chilled mixture into the ice-cream maker follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If you have no ice cream maker, don’t worry, you can still make ice cream though it will take a little longer. Pour the chilled mixture into a large container. Pop it in the fast-freeze section of your freezer. Check it after 45 minutes. It will have begun to crystallize around the edges. Use a hand whisk, wooden spoon or electric hand whisk to break the crystals up and incorporate them into the mixture, then refreeze. Keep checking and beating the mixture every 3040 minutes and within 3 hours you will have ice cream.

3 Myths about cruising

ver thought about cruising? Concerned it is not for you? Then let me help. Firstly, let me introduce myself. My name is Nick Markham and I am an Independent Cruise Expert. About those “3 Myths”: TOO EXPENSIVE Cruises start off at as little as £180 for a taster cruise mini break usually lasting 2 nights. It is also important to remember that the cost of the cruise includes all your food and some soft drinks and teas/ coffee. ONLY OLD PEOPLE CRUISE Not true. Cruising is done by all ages.

14

Different ships will offer different experiences. Set sail on a Princess Ship and experience the ‘flo rider’, the climbing wall or ice skating rink.

NOTHING TO DO – BOREDOM; once again you need to choose the ship and itinerary that will suit you. Tell your cruise expert what you like and let them tailor make your ideal cruise. Think about what is important to you. Is

it the destinations you will visit, the ship itself or a bit of both? I hope you have found the above information helpful. For help with any further enquiries do not hesitate to contact me on Freephone 0808 180 0971, or email me at: nmarkham@ cruiseholidaysuk.co.uk, or check out my website; http://nickmarkham. cruiseholidaysuk.co.uk Next time I will discuss my time on board the launch party for the Norwegian Breakaway and discuss what this ship and many other Norwegian ships have to offer.

Meditation

T

flow that gets to the lungs. Practitioners also find that their resting heart rate is lower which takes some of the stress off their hearts.

he Oxford English Dictionary defines the verb ‘meditate’ as: to focus one’s mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes, or as a method of relaxation. For many, some form of meditation is part of their daily routine. There are many different meditation techniques, including: transcendental meditation, prayer, Zen meditation, Taoist meditation, mindfulness meditation, and Buddhist meditation. Some methods require the body to be absolutely still, or to be moved with controlled deliberation, while other types allow for free movement of the body. While the methods are different, the end goal of all types of meditation is to lead to a mind that is at peace and free from stress by the use of quiet contemplation and reflection.

Those who meditate say they become less bothered by little things which they previously magnified and turned into serious things. Through meditation, they learn to detach and live in the here and now, rather than worrying about the past or future. Practitioners also find that meditation improves their memory and levels of concentration. This makes them more productive.

If practiced regularly, meditation can bring about healing of both the body and the mind.

Meditation is also said to promote a youthful appearance and help in chronic diseases such as allergies and arthritis. It can also help in post operative healing, enhance the immune system by increasing the activity of ‘natural-killer cells’ and reduce the action of viruses. Ladies may find it reduces pre menstrual tension, and because evidence shows that chemicals in the body that are associated

Sunny Accountancy

Karl Watts from Sunny Accountancy offers some sound advice for local business owners. 1. Review your books regularly. When you’re running your business, you may not take the time to sit down and look at your financials. But you can’t manage your money without having the facts. At least once a month, preferably once a week, look at your figures: accounts payable and receivable, expenses, cash flow, etc. 2. Send them your bill! I’m always surprised by how many businesspeople, especially consultants and professional service providers, delay sending out their invoices. You may feel uncomfortable asking someone for money, afraid of being challenged on how much you’ve billed, or just too busy working. But the longer you wait to send out your invoices, the greater the chance you won’t get paid. 3. Watch your inventory. If you produce goods, you’ll always be tempted to

produce more because you get savings based on volume. But inventory can go “bad,” become out-dated, unsaleable, time- or weather-worn. Inventory doesn’t just apply to finished goods for resale. You may have “inventory” in the form of marketing materials. Keep an eye on your actual use and make your purchases not only on the basis of price but whether you can get small quantities only when you actually need them. 4. Manage your growth. You want your business to get bigger, but if you grow too fast you may not be able to sustain it. Growth costs money; you incur many expenses before you see additional income. Plan your growth so you have the financial resources to pay for it. 5. Save. Every business has income fluctuations. The best way to have cash when you need it is to put some away when you’ve got it.

Blocked Drains!

A

toilet that won’t flush, sinks that won’t empty, grates that overflow, and an unpleasant smell are all tell-tale signs that there is a blockage or damage to the pipes, drains or sewers that service your property. But who is responsible for carrying out the work?

Since October 2011, homeowners are responsible only for the maintenance of pipes or drains on their own property. Once they cross the boundary line onto the pavement or road, they become the responsibility of the water company.

In addition, the water company is liable for all shared sewers (i.e. drains that meet from more than one building) even if they are on private land.

So, how do you find out where the blockage is? A chat with a neighbour or a quick look into the inspection chamber should give you a clue.

Occasionally, blockages occur due to a collapsed or broken drain, in which case you will need a professional to inspect the damage and quote for remedial work. You can choose whoever you like to repair drains on your own property.

Most blockages can be easily cleared and you could have a go yourself with drainage rods, but as it’s a dirty, smelly job, or if you are struggling to locate the source, you might want to call in a specialist.

Personal Injury Claims

Don’t Trip Up

The policy also covered the claimant’s own costs which would include medical reports etc. However, the new rules again forbid the recovery of any such premiums from the insurers and thus the expense of the policy would be the responsibility of the claimant, further diminishing the compensation to be recovered.

The changes will affect the publics ability to bring personal injury claims and many could find the new regime prohibitive. Under conditional fee agreements which came into being in 1999 (so called “no win,no fee”) the lawyer acting on behalf of the injured party could claim a percentage uplift upon the costs of the claim and this was recoverable from the Defendant’s insurance company.

The new rules will therefore place a much larger burden upon the claimant who will see less compensation being recovered . However, the levels of compensation to be paid are to be increased by 10% to reduce the effects of non-recoverability of the success fee and insurance premium. There will also be Qualified One-Way Costs Shifting (QOCS) for personal injury claims. This means that, save for certain situations, costs will not be payable by an unsuccessful claimant to a defendant and thus the insurance policy referred to above should not be required.

Important changes to the Civil Law relating to the conduct of personal injury claims were introduced on 1st April with further measures due to be implemented as at 31st July 2013 through the Legal Aid Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LAPSO).

The new rules state that the success fee must come from the compensation payable to the injured claimant. This will thus reduce the amount received in a successful action. In addition, the claimant would be advised to take out a policy of insurance to protect them in case the matter was unsuccessful and a costs order made against them.
