Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

All That Jazz

uly is the month to be a jazz lover, with festivals arranged country-wide. The story of British jazz begins with the record Livery Stable Blues, by the (all white) Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1917. The London Times was disparaging, “The object of a jazz band apparently, is to provide as much noise as possible. The method of doing so is immaterial, and if music happens to be the result occasionally, so much the better.” Not terribly promising!

The first jazz ‘star’ to visit these shores was Sidney Bechet, the clarinettist and soprano saxophonist. Brits began to develop a taste for jazz. Louis Armstrong visited Britain in July 1932. He used local musicians as support on his tour. It was the first chance for fledgling British jazz musicians to play with someone of Armstrong’s calibre. He was influential in shifting British jazz away from the smooth white sounds of Bix Beiderbecke, towards hotter black American vibes. By the time Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins arrived, the British Ministry of Labour and the American Federation of Musicians had embarked on a dispute which would set the cause of jazz in Britain back several years. The Second World War brought an unexpected consequence though. There was a renewed interest in the work of black jazz musicians, partly as an anti-racist rejection of fascism.

8

By the early fifties, musicians like Ronnie Scott, Johnny Dankworth and Charlie Parker were getting regular air time, and Ronnie Scott’s jazz club opened in London. Shortly after this, jazz fell victim to the new rock ‘n’ roll craze. Fortunately, the long running dispute with the American Federation of Musicians finished in time for Beatlemania. This boosted the British jazz scene by allowing ‘labourswaps’ of our own pop musicians with American jazz players. Throughout the Seventies jazz-rock fusion became commercially dominant. British free-jazz and trad-jazz struggled to develop amongst the pop scene. It was only in the eighties that a brief jazz revival was sparked by the likes of Courtney Pine and Tommy Smith. Back in the Nineties the general feeling was that the best of jazz had happened in the past and in America, yet by the turn of the Millenium jazz suddenly reappeared. Led by mainstream acts Stacey Kent, a New Yorker settled in London, Clare Teal and Jamie Cullum. In addition, musicians such as pianist Matthew Bourne and trumpeter Alison Kerr are flourishing. It seems Britain has finally found its jazz voice. Drop in to a jazz venue near you this month and find out what they have planned. By Kate Lord

Walking Back To Happiness

ealth experts recommend that we get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times a week. To achieve this, look no further than something you’ve been doing since you were a toddler - walking! Walking has been described as “the nearest activity to perfect exercise” and offers a host of health benefits, including a reduction in the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and stroke. In addition, walking conditions all the muscles of the lower body, particularly those in the bottom and thighs, and US psychologists also claim that regularly spending time outdoors can help stave off anxiety and depression. Walking can, quite literally, be done anywhere but if tramping the streets or countryside alone is not your idea of fun, why not join a walking group near you? They are a great way to make new friends and meet like-minded people in a sociable and safe environment. The Ramblers is Britain’s walking charity, with around 500 groups throughout the British Isles. Most groups are organised geographically, but there are some that specialise in shorter, easier, or familyfriendly walks, and others that cater for specific age groups - for example people in their 20s, 30s or 40s. Walks are run weekly and are generally led by a trained leader. The cost of annual membership is £32 or £3 per month.

up and register on the day. A list of events can be found on their website www.bwf-ivv. org.uk along with a list of walking groups around the country. The British Walking Federation offers individual membership at £8 per year, which entitles members to a calendar of events, newsletters and discounts on entry fees to permanent BWF trails. If you like walking but fancy something a little different, why not give Nordic Walking a try? Originally designed to help crosscountry skiers train during the summer months, this method of walking is suitable for all ages, experience and fitness levels, and involves the use of specially designed poles to give you a full body work out that tones the arms, legs, stomach, chest and back, in addition to the legs. Using the poles puts less pressure on the joints as the work is shared between different parts of the body. The only equipment needed to start Nordic Walking is a good pair of shoes and comfortable clothing. Poles are provided within the class fee price of £5-£6 for around an hour. For more information visit www. britishnordicwalking.org.uk or www.nordicwalking.co.uk.

The British Walking Federation organises walking events for people of all ages and abilities, to encourage personal fitness through regular non-competitive exercise. To participate, simply turn

Benefits of Mechanical Facials

echanical facial treatments are seen as the next step up from manual facials. They further enhance the effects of manual techniques.

There are some additional contraindications to be considered for mechanical work and because of the particular benefits of each piece of equipment, it is critically important that your therapist selects only the elements that will be beneficial to your individual skin type. In this article, we are going research a little more colour LED light therapy technology. Providing a wide selection of benefits, these types of treatments utilise a range of different coloured lights – most commonly red, blue, green and yellow – in order to facilitate changes within the skin. The non- invasive light therapy stimulates intercellular communication, resulting in cell rejuvenation. The multiple wave length

12

within the visible light spectrum generates different effects within the tissue. Red light is used for its regeneration and rejuvenation properties. It also works deep to decrease inflammation and is particularly effective for conditions such as eczema. Blue light relieves inflammation, reduces swelling and aids elimination of toxins. Perfect for acneic skin as blue lights normalises sebum production and has antiseptic and antibacterial actions. Cooling and calming green light has an anti-inflammatory effect, ideal for regular skin tones, relieving redness and helping to diminish signs of skin discolouration. In addition, yellow light tones the muscles and stimulates the sensory and motor nervous system. I suggest that you need to experience a mechanical facial to see the benefits for yourself…. doors needed repainting which was no small task; the doors are 15 metres high and 60 metres long. The work was carried out in the middle of a very cold winter but was completed to everyone’s satisfaction. Sharpline understand that peoples lives are busy and timing is important to their clients. Work needs to be carried to fit in with their customers requirements both at home or work. Stephen Fowles, MD for Fairfield Control Systems based near Newark recently wrote to Brian at Sharpline and said “I write to express thanks and delight at how the office refurbishment project went. We all knew it was an extremely tight time scale: finishing business Thursday lunch time, clearing the office of all furniture and contents, decorating late into the evening and all Friday, carpet fitting Friday night new furniture installation Saturday, fit computers and rebuild networks Sunday with business as normal Monday morning. The project, which was one that I had been dreading to start, had been put off for quite some time, but turned into the dream project thanks to you and your professional dedicated team.” Sharpline Decorators can be contacted on 01623 827665 or you can email brian@sharplinedecorators. wanadoo.co.uk.

Over the last few years Sharpline have completed more and more commercial contracts although Brian and his team are very keen to continue their quality work in the residential market. Easy Access Bathroom Design

here are more bathroom designs for the T elderly and disabled than ever before. Home builders are incorporating long-term stay options by crafting homes with wider doors, different levels of counter surfaces in both the kitchen and the bath, and deeper steps. Whether you are retro-fitting your existing bathroom, or building a new one, take some steps to create a universal design that can suit any homeowner.

Design is the concept of creating a space that can be used by anyone, including seniors and those with disabilities. These bathrooms incorporate several aspects of Universal design that can be used for both the elderly and disabled individuals. Retro-fitting refers to making minor changes to an existing space. For example a toilet can be modified with an extender that raises it height, making it more accessible for seniors that have difficulty lowering themselves, or for those transferring to wheelchairs. Grab bars installed beside the toilet make transferring and lowering easier, while the flush valve of the toilet is placed at a height that can be reached without bending. Another good idea is a mosaic floor, mosaics are less slippery than larger tiles because the many grout lines create traction underfoot. An accessible shower can be used for rollin, walk-in and transfer situations. A bench can fold up to make additional space for wheelchairs, while a smooth, curbless shower floor presents no obstacle to entry.

Several points to consider include:

• Low threshold in the shower making a smaller barrier to entry • Two grab bars in the shower help steady the user and assist in preventing falls • The showerhead can be disengaged from the wall for flexibility in use • The wide shower door will accommodate a wheelchair or walker • A wide turning radius in the center of the bathroom allows for freedom of movement by a walker or wheelchair user • Additional lighting in the shower area keeps the space well-lit • Different heights of countertop allow the user to sit while using the sink and vanity area Having an accessible bathroom does not mean designing it to look straight out of a hospital room. Depending upon the user’s needs, it is possible to create fresh, modern bathroom designs that are also accessible, and featuring several components of Universal design. The time and effort put into designing and implementing these safety measures can potentially save you quite a bit of stress and risk. Following these guidelines and the advice of professionals will help you to create a safe enviornment, and design an ideal bathroom that is functional for anyone.

A grab bar assists in transferring from a wheelchair to the shower seat, or lowering from a standing to a seated position. The shower valve can be installed at a height that can be reached from a seated or standing position, while the showerhead is attached to a sliding bar. The shower head can be positioned and fixed at any height, or removed from the bar for easy accessibility. A senior-friendly bathroom incorporates many tenets of Universal design.

Stags Roundup

ith the World cup well and truly W underway, my attention has momentarily (well for a month or so…)

switched to that. With the football league due to start on the 9th of August, the World Cup has kept my brain ticking over for what would have been a dry couple of months without football. The most anticipated football spectacle surely has lived up to its prestigious name. Goals flying in left, right and centre… Van Persies for example; in my eyes a contender for goal of the tournament. However, these late kick offs seem to be disrupting my sleep pattern just a little. But, who would want to miss Iran v Nigeria? On to more important news, Mansfield have enhanced their attacking options with the arrivals of Liam Hearn and Alex Fisher to the ranks - both looking very impressive

signings. Hearn especially with a goal average of one every two games, that’s as long as we keep him fit! The defence has also received a boost with the familiar face of Luke Jones, part of our Championship winning side during the 2012/2013 season. He can also score a few himself! The only major negative coming out of the Mill this week is that long term servant Alan Marriott has decided to turn down a new offer. Even due to our inconsistency last season he still managed to keep a fairly impressive 15 clean sheets. I’m sure many Stags fans will agree they will miss the prolific shot stopper. But the question is who will replace Marriott between the sticks for the up and coming season? Sam Dunville

In-Car Dash Cameras

ou’re behind the wheel of your family saloon, quietly minding your own business, when a souped up sports car suddenly flies past and cuts you up just as you reach the motorway exit. Seconds later it’s gone, with nothing to show but a trail of smoke. Not so long ago there was no getting back at reckless drivers like this guy (unless you employed the tactics of the driver in the photo!) but in-car cameras now offer the chance to bring them to count. An absolute given in countries like Russia, Japan and the USA, only 3% of British drivers currently own a dash cam, but the trend is on the increase. A recent RAC survey found that 4 out of 10 car owners would consider buying one, and that a fifth of current dash cams are used to guard against ‘cash for crash’ scams. False insurance claims are growing, and one common way of faking it is to set up a collision and claim the crash was the fault of the innocent party. If you’re the victim in a case like this, capturing the event on camera could help prove your innocence and bring the bad guys to justice.

Good footage from a dashboard camera is admissible evidence in court, so if you are involved in a genuine accident it can offer proof of what really took place. You can also use it to protect your vehicle whilst parked. The camera will come to life when damage is detected.

24

Dashboard cameras, which are usually mounted on the windscreen, record onto memory cards whilst the ignition is on. Recording is constant, which means that once the card is full, old files are overwritten. Recording time depends on the size of memory card and the bit rate of the camera, but can run into several hours. Installation is by suction or adhesive pads. Cameras are most often wired into the cigarette lighter, but can also be hardwired directly into the car battery - the only way if you want a model with parking mode. When choosing an in-car camera, first consider the size. Smaller models are more discreet, and black is the best lowprofile colour. Next, look for one with a decent video resolution. The current standard is 1080p, which will pick out number plates and other details - essential if required as evidence. Check what the night video quality is like, and decide if you want a model that can save footage you might want to keep. Other useful options include date and time stamps, and dual or multiple channels which record what’s behind as well as what’s in front of you. Finally, don’t forget that dash cams can be fun! They are a great way to capture details of memorable trips, and film the more unusual sights we come across from time to time! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Garden Toys For Summer Fun

ou don’t always need to leave home to have some Summer fun with the children. If you invest in some great garden toys you can keep them busy for hours, and ensure they get some fresh air and exercise. Traditional toys such as swings and slides remain popular. There are many different sizes and styles available, so do make sure that you pick carefully to match the age of the children that will be playing on them, and to ensure they are robust enough. Trampolines have really increased in popularity in the last five years or so. Do take care to consider where you will place one in your garden. Do you really have a big enough, flat surface available? All but the small junior ones come with safety enclosures. Do read the assembly and usage instructions carefully. Frequently these will say there should be only one person at a time on the trampoline, but this can be tricky to enforce. Give them a sense of the beach by buying a sandpit. Designs vary from simple circle shaped pits, to shaped items, right through to luxury wooden models, with seats and built-in sunshade. It can be useful to have one with a lid to protect the sand from wet weather. Stores recommend that you buy special play-sand to ensure it is clean, safe and non toxic, and ideal for making sand castles with. Or perhaps you might prefer a play table that incorporates a sand area and water play?

Lots of fun can be had in a paddling pool. These range from very cheap, simple single ring designs, to those with multiple rings, rigid sides, and those incorporating slides and other activities. Ease of inflation is an important consideration when you have excited children waiting to play. Other toys that can help kids have fun with water in the garden include sprinklers, and of course water pistols, or as they are more commonly known these days ‘Supersoakers’. An empty sand pit or paddling pool can also double up as a ball pool. Or why not have your own World cup or Wimbledon, by investing in football goals or tennis equipment? If you only have a small garden or limited budget, do not despair, there are still many choices. How about a croquet or skittle set, skipping rope, slingshot, hoola hoop, some blowing bubbles or a small play tunnel? If you’ve not room for ball games requiring lots of space try something like swingball. Or you could let the little ones do some garden role play by buying some play ‘mini garden tools’ Whatever you buy, always check age guidelines and look for quality marks. By Susan Brookes-Morris
