Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Walking Back To Happiness

ealth experts recommend that we get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times a week. To achieve this, look no further than something you’ve been doing since you were a toddler - walking! Walking has been described as “the nearest activity to perfect exercise” and offers a host of health benefits, including a reduction in the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and stroke. In addition, walking conditions all the muscles of the lower body, particularly those in the bottom and thighs, and US psychologists also claim that regularly spending time outdoors can help stave off anxiety and depression. Walking can, quite literally, be done anywhere but if tramping the streets or countryside alone is not your idea of fun, why not join a walking group near you? They are a great way to make new friends and meet like-minded people in a sociable and safe environment. The Ramblers is Britain’s walking charity, with around 500 groups throughout the British Isles. Most groups are organised geographically, but there are some that specialise in shorter, easier, or familyfriendly walks, and others that cater for specific age groups - for example people in their 20s, 30s or 40s. Walks are run weekly and are generally led by a trained leader. The cost of annual membership is £32 or £3 per month.

up and register on the day. A list of events can be found on their website www.bwf-ivv. org.uk along with a list of walking groups around the country. The British Walking Federation offers individual membership at £8 per year, which entitles members to a calendar of events, newsletters and discounts on entry fees to permanent BWF trails. If you like walking but fancy something a little different, why not give Nordic Walking a try? Originally designed to help crosscountry skiers train during the summer months, this method of walking is suitable for all ages, experience and fitness levels, and involves the use of specially designed poles to give you a full body work out that tones the arms, legs, stomach, chest and back, in addition to the legs. Using the poles puts less pressure on the joints as the work is shared between different parts of the body. The only equipment needed to start Nordic Walking is a good pair of shoes and comfortable clothing. Poles are provided within the class fee price of £5-£6 for around an hour. For more information visit www. britishnordicwalking.org.uk or www.nordicwalking.co.uk.

The British Walking Federation organises walking events for people of all ages and abilities, to encourage personal fitness through regular non-competitive exercise. To participate, simply turn

Travelling With Kids

eep family holidays K a trouble-free, happy experience by following

Keep Healthy

Pack plenty for kids to do during long, tedious journeys. A device loaded with apps is nice and compact, but also consider hand held puzzles, colouring books, plasticine, puppets, stickers, reading books and cards.

Young children often get ill on holiday. Keep bugs at bay by having a supply of antibacterial wipes to clean restaurant tables, cutlery and toilet seats and hand sanitiser for when there are no washing facilities nearby. A basic first aid kit is also a must! Pack pain killers or an easy to swallow medicine like Calpol, along with antiseptic wipes, plasters, antihistamines and a thermometer.

Keep Safe

Keep Memories

Use a child locator if you are visiting busy airports or crowded tourist attractions. Your child wears a small unit strapped to a belt or shoe and you keep the transmitter. If you lose your child, set off the alarm and follow the sound to find them. For older kids, write your mobile phone number on their arm.

Give smaller children a robust, childfriendly camera to record what’s important and interesting to them, and encourage older kids to keep a travel journal on postcards by writing messages to themselves - they make great memories for adulthood! Happy Holidays!

All That Jazz

uly is the month to be a jazz lover, with festivals arranged country-wide. The story of British jazz begins with the record Livery Stable Blues, by the (all white) Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1917. The London Times was disparaging, “The object of a jazz band apparently, is to provide as much noise as possible. The method of doing so is immaterial, and if music happens to be the result occasionally, so much the better.” Not terribly promising!

The first jazz ‘star’ to visit these shores was Sidney Bechet, the clarinettist and soprano saxophonist. Brits began to develop a taste for jazz. Louis Armstrong visited Britain in July 1932. He used local musicians as support on his tour. It was the first chance for fledgling British jazz musicians to play with someone of Armstrong’s calibre. He was influential in shifting British jazz away from the smooth white sounds of Bix Beiderbecke, towards hotter black American vibes. By the time Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins arrived, the British Ministry of Labour and the American Federation of Musicians had embarked on a dispute which would set the cause of jazz in Britain back several years. The Second World War brought an unexpected consequence though. There was a renewed interest in the work of black jazz musicians, partly as an anti-racist rejection of fascism.

10

By the early fifties, musicians like Ronnie Scott, Johnny Dankworth and Charlie Parker were getting regular air time, and Ronnie Scott’s jazz club opened in London. Shortly after this, jazz fell victim to the new rock ‘n’ roll craze. Fortunately, the long running dispute with the American Federation of Musicians finished in time for Beatlemania. This boosted the British jazz scene by allowing ‘labourswaps’ of our own pop musicians with American jazz players. Throughout the Seventies jazz-rock fusion became commercially dominant. British free-jazz and trad-jazz struggled to develop amongst the pop scene. It was only in the eighties that a brief jazz revival was sparked by the likes of Courtney Pine and Tommy Smith. Back in the Nineties the general feeling was that the best of jazz had happened in the past and in America, yet by the turn of the Millenium jazz suddenly reappeared. Led by mainstream acts Stacey Kent, a New Yorker settled in London, Clare Teal and Jamie Cullum. In addition, musicians such as pianist Matthew Bourne and trumpeter Alison Kerr are flourishing. It seems Britain has finally found its jazz voice. Drop in to a jazz venue near you this month and find out what they have planned. By Kate Lord

“Still Here For You”

anor Pharmacy – the family-run East Midlands-based pharmacy – has responded to the concerns of its West Bridgford customers about store re-location with the launch of a local multi-media promotional campaign. Its message? Manor Pharmacy is “Still here for you.” Later this year, West Bridgford is set to see five of its GP practices merge and relocate to a new £8m ‘super surgery’ on Wilford Lane. These plans have caused major concerns amongst residents since they were announced, as patients will need to travel some distance to the site due to its location on the outskirts of the area.

Manor Pharmacy customers of both Loughborough Road and Melton Road have wrongly assumed that these branches will also be relocating to Wilford Lane. This campaign is set to alleviate the genuine fears of loyal customers who rely on Manor Pharmacy for their prescription needs, general help, advice and support. The pharmacist of Manor Pharmacy on Loughborough Road, Caroline Pigott, features in the campaign and explains the concerns.

pharmacies have regularly been informing customers that they will continue to be a familiar sight on the high street, Manor Pharmacy’s head office, based in Ilkeston, was keen to invest in the multi-media promotional campaign, which begins this week with a flyer being delivered to over 12,500 West Bridgford homes. “Our aim is to reassure those worried about a move, but also promote the superb, personal service offered by pharmacist John Russell and his staff on Melton Road, and Caroline and her team on Loughborough Road,” explains Manor Pharmacy Operations Director, Ian McKenzie. “We recognise that many of our customers – from elderly people to stay-at-home parents – need much more than just a place to quickly collect medicines. They’re looking for friendly, experienced, knowledgeable pharmacists they can trust – and in both Caroline and John they have just that. It’s our role now to communicate this to the residents of West Bridgford and we’re sure this campaign will help spread the word.”

“We’ve built very strong relationships with our customers over the many years we’ve been in West Bridgford, and we were finding that a lot of them – particularly elderly patients – were really worried that they’d have to travel to Wilford Lane to collect their prescriptions or talk to us about their health concerns,” says Caroline. “A lot of these residents in particular don’t have a car or might not be able to drive due to their health, so having a local pharmacy they can walk to – and perhaps more importantly, a friendly, familiar face they can talk to – is hugely important to their general wellbeing.” As much as the teams in both

Sharpline Decorators

dwinstowe based Sharpline Decorators has achieved two highly prestigious awards recently. In April the company were awarded the much sort after Investors In People accreditation. The company directors have worked tirelessly in achieving this accolade and Operations Director Brian Walker is very proud of the achievement. “We realise that investing in good people who work together with common goals is our most important asset,” commented Brian. “We are a family orientated company and we endeavour to create job opportunities for local people and we currently employ 21 fully qualified decorators & 2 Apprentices. We are seeking to increase this number in the near future”

To underline the success of Sharpline, one of the apprentices, Stefan Hubble, won first place in the East Midlands regional heats of SkillBuild 2014. These awards are aimed at finding Britain’s best trainee tradesperson, 102 students from 20 colleges compete in a range of craft-based challenges including bricklaying, carpentry, joinery, plastering, painting and decorating. Stefan was placed first in the new entrant category for painting and decorating. Well done Stefan, great to see local talent doing us all proud!

doors needed repainting which was no small task; the doors are 15 metres high and 60 metres long. The work was carried out in the middle of a very cold winter but was completed to everyone’s satisfaction. Sharpline understand that peoples lives are busy and timing is important to their clients. Work needs to be carried to fit in with their customers requirements both at home or work. Stephen Fowles, MD for Fairfield Control Systems based near Newark recently wrote to Brian at Sharpline and said “I write to express thanks and delight at how the office refurbishment project went. We all knew it was an extremely tight time scale: finishing business Thursday lunch time, clearing the office of all furniture and contents, decorating late into the evening and all Friday, carpet fitting Friday night new furniture installation Saturday, fit computers and rebuild networks Sunday with business as normal Monday morning. The project, which was one that I had been dreading to start, had been put off for quite some time, but turned into the dream project thanks to you and your professional dedicated team.” Sharpline Decorators can be contacted on 01623 827665 or you can email brian@sharplinedecorators. wanadoo.co.uk.

Over the last few years Sharpline have completed more and more commercial contracts although Brian and his team are very keen to continue their quality work in the residential market. The work that comes in is varied with no two jobs the same. The company recently carried out a 100K decorating refurbishment project (for main contractor Willmott Dixon construction) at Market Harborough District Council which was completed 9 weeks ahead of schedule. They also worked at RAF Scampton, home of the world famous Red Arrows. The Benefits of Braces

our dentist may have discussed with you the benefits of having healthy teeth and proper jaw alignment. Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This can result in tooth decay, worsen gum disease and lead to tooth loss. Other orthodontic problems can contribute to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing function, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth, or misalignment of the jaw joints. These can lead to chronic headaches and face or neck pain. Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment • Attractive smile • Reduce appearance-consciousness during critical development years • Maintain proper tooth relationships to allow effective chewing, digestion and speech • Better function of the teeth • Possible increase in self-confidence and interpersonal effectiveness • Increased ability to clean teeth • Improved force distribution and wear patterns of the teeth • Guide facial growth for a more attractive profile • Long-term health of teeth and gums • Guide permanent teeth into more favourable positions • Reduce the risk of injury to protruding front teeth • Eliminate the need to replace missing teeth • Aid in optimising other dental treatment • Correct improper jaw relationships and reduce stress on teeth, chewing muscles, jaw joints and the supporting bone and gum tissues

metal, ceramic or plastic. They may be removable or they may be brackets that are glued to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to a corrected position. When pressure is put on your teeth, the jawbone surrounding your teeth also changes shape. Old bone dissolves and new bone grows in to support the teeth in their new place. There are many new, innovative approaches to orthodontic treatment. The appliances are smaller, removable appliances have been improved and wires are more flexible and efficient than they used to be. Duration of Treatment Cosmetically focused treatment which focuses only on the front teeth can take as little as 3 - 10 months. Comprehensive treatment which aims at correcting all of the teeth can take anything between 1824 monthsEvery person is different and responds differently to treatment. Foods to Avoid What can you eat? You need to be careful with what you eat, you are usually advised to avoid hard and sticky foods to avoid breakages and discomfort. At first, you may want to stick to soft foods. Avoid hard foods until things are more comfortable.

Orthodontic treatment may permanently change your teeth and possibly your face and profile. You want a well-qualified professional working for the best possible results. How Orthodontic Treatment Works Orthodontic appliances can be made of

Easy Access Bathroom Design

here are more bathroom designs for the T elderly and disabled than ever before. Home builders are incorporating long-term stay options by crafting homes with wider doors, different levels of counter surfaces in both the kitchen and the bath, and deeper steps. Whether you are retro-fitting your existing bathroom, or building a new one, take some steps to create a universal design that can suit any homeowner.

Design is the concept of creating a space that can be used by anyone, including seniors and those with disabilities. These bathrooms incorporate several aspects of Universal design that can be used for both the elderly and disabled individuals. Retro-fitting refers to making minor changes to an existing space. For example a toilet can be modified with an extender that raises it height, making it more accessible for seniors that have difficulty lowering themselves, or for those transferring to wheelchairs. Grab bars installed beside the toilet make transferring and lowering easier, while the flush valve of the toilet is placed at a height that can be reached without bending. Another good idea is a mosaic floor, mosaics are less slippery than larger tiles because the many grout lines create traction underfoot. An accessible shower can be used for rollin, walk-in and transfer situations. A bench can fold up to make additional space for wheelchairs, while a smooth, curbless shower floor presents no obstacle to entry.

Several points to consider include:

• Low threshold in the shower making a smaller barrier to entry • Two grab bars in the shower help steady the user and assist in preventing falls • The showerhead can be disengaged from the wall for flexibility in use • The wide shower door will accommodate a wheelchair or walker • A wide turning radius in the center of the bathroom allows for freedom of movement by a walker or wheelchair user • Additional lighting in the shower area keeps the space well-lit • Different heights of countertop allow the user to sit while using the sink and vanity area Having an accessible bathroom does not mean designing it to look straight out of a hospital room. Depending upon the user’s needs, it is possible to create fresh, modern bathroom designs that are also accessible, and featuring several components of Universal design. The time and effort put into designing and implementing these safety measures can potentially save you quite a bit of stress and risk. Following these guidelines and the advice of professionals will help you to create a safe enviornment, and design an ideal bathroom that is functional for anyone.

A grab bar assists in transferring from a wheelchair to the shower seat, or lowering from a standing to a seated position. The shower valve can be installed at a height that can be reached from a seated or standing position, while the showerhead is attached to a sliding bar. The shower head can be positioned and fixed at any height, or removed from the bar for easy accessibility. A senior-friendly bathroom incorporates many tenets of Universal design.

Protecting Pets From The Sun

There is also a range of clothing products from hats and sun visors, through to sun suits like those made for children.

ven in a ‘British Summer,’ the sun’s rays can be harmful to our pets as well as to ourselves.

We’ve all become wiser about applying sunscreen and thinking about the effects of UV rays, but now we need to apply this to our pets too. Pets just like humans, can get sunburn if out in the sun for too long. In the longer term, exposure can trigger squamous cell carcinoma - a form of cancer. Most at risk are hairless varieties and white animals There are many products now available to help you protect your pet. These include sunscreens, special wipes, sunblock and soothing after-sun lotion. Always use products specifically designed for pets as human ones often contain salicylates, which may prove toxic.

If your pet will be in a vehicle, it is advisable to fit sun screens. When you are out and about, protect your pet by using umbrellas and sun shades or the shade of a tree. Products can be found in pet stores, online and at your vets. Try to avoid your pet being out in the midday sun, and always ensure your pet is well hydrated in hot weather. By Susan Brookes-Morris
