Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Mansfield & Chesterfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor
in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Pocket Money
The Annual 2014 Pocket Money Survey by the Halifax revealed that 8 to 15 year olds received an average amount of £6.35 per week. Whilst parents or guardians were the main givers, a third of those surveyed also received pocket money from grandparents.
amounts if children do additional chores or achieve something significant .Of course you will need to make the possibilities appropriate to their age, and different chores can attract different bonuses depending on the time and effort required.
Thirteen year olds were the most likely age group to receive weekly amounts and boys received more on average than girls. Only a third of children said they would save up for something expensive, most preferring to ask for it as a present. Other surveys such as those by Roosterbank suggest children as young as 3 are getting pocket money.
Many parents find that the use of a reward chart is helpful, particularly for younger children as it shows clearly the financial benefits of completing extra tasks.
Whatever the amount, pocket money given in the right way can help children to learn the necessary skills and gain the confidence to handle money responsibly. If you are having trouble deciding how much pocket money to give your children, think about what you expect them to pay for from that money. You can involve your children in the decision process. Do you expect them to buy their own sweets and magazines with the money for example, and would this mean that they ended up eating fewer sweets than you currently buy for them which may lead to healthier choices? Or would you prefer to buy this type of thing and money will be for ‘special extras’ only?
Having regular conversations about what children are doing with their money, what they want to buy and why they want it is also important. This can help them understand the value of things much more clearly than when you pay for things for them because they have to decide whether to buy x or y. If you can bear it, it really is best to let them learn from their financial mistakes. Whilst many children will have a splurge when they first start receiving pocket money, as they get used to it they tend to become more careful about their choices. You can also help stimulate their thinking by talking about how you budget. By Susan Brookes-Morris
Commonly a basic payment plus bonus system is recommended. This includes a fixed amount which is given as long as children do certain expected things, perhaps keep their rooms tidy and do their homework for example. It is then ‘topped’ up by extra

Basic Car Maintenance
A holiday is a wonderful opportunity to relax and take things easy, but it’s also when we place extra demands on our car. Whether planning a break on UK soil, or a trip by ferry to the continent, chances are that our motor is going to travel more miles than usual, and this could bring about unwanted trouble if we don’t take precautions. Holiday car-breakdowns are miseryinducing. I have vivid memories of steam billowing out of our car’s engine one summer as a teenager, and of my dad fixing up some temporary repair that involved a pop bottle.
Amazement that he had the know-how to do such a thing (I had up to this point branded him as a mechanophobe, if there is such a thing) didn’t make up for the frustration of being cooped up in a hot and stuffy car when I should have been out in the sunshine enjoying myself! Most car faults are simple things which could easily be avoided by a pre-holiday inspection. So, at least a week before you are due to go away, carry out these simple checks to reduce the risk of your dream break turning into a holiday nightmare!
Check the condition of the tyres, including the spare. Inspect for cuts, abrasions, bulges or embedded nails or stones. This could also be a good opportunity to use the jack and ensure it works properly! Check the tread and tyre pressure. If you are likely to be driving at sustained high speeds or with the car fully loaded, you may need to raise the pressure to higher than normal. Check the condition of the wiper blades and clean them with a tissue dipped in screen wash concentrate. If they look damaged or if they smear a clean screen, renew them. Make sure all external lights are functioning, including rear fog lights. Try the horn, clean the windows and wipe the lamp lenses and door mirrors. Finally, make sure you have a warning triangle, spare bulbs and a First Aid Kit, especially if you are travelling abroad as they are required in certain countries. Prevention is always better than cure, but don’t forget to take your breakdown cards and membership details – just in case! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti
First, check that your car won’t be due for an MOT or service while you’re away. Next, check all the fluid levels – engine oil and coolant; brake, clutch and power steering reservoirs; screen wash; automatic transmission fluid if appropriate – and top up if required. Inspect the fan belt for cracks and separation of the belt plies and get a new one fitted if necessary. Consider carrying a spare.

A Good Read
Eating for England – Nigel Slater
Why is Snot Green? – Glenn Murphy
Subtitled ‘The Delights and Eccentricities of the British at Table’, this is an extended love letter to British food over the last forty years. If you have fond memories of sharing a box of Black Magic at Christmas or spooning jam over school rice pudding, then this is for you.
Want to see a nine year old boy (or indeed, a thirtynine year old boy) reading? Well, buy a copy of this book and that’s what you’ll get.
Anyone who owns one of Nigel Slater’s cookbooks will know that there is as much pleasure to be had from reading the recipes as there is from following them. He writes about food with passion, knowledge and honesty, admitting his fondness for Heinz Tomato Ketchup , Smarties and other non-gastronomic treats. Here, he devotes short chapters (often no more than a paragraph or two) to a whole range of peculiarly British delights. Some are drawn from childhood memories, such as his father’s unsuccessful experiment with a coffee percolator (it ends up packed away next to the Christmas tree lights) or his mother’s blancmanges. Others are more contemporary and tells of the delight to be had from a visit to the fishmonger or the ritual of a Saturday farmers’ market. All are well written, funny and evocative. Whether you read this from cover to cover, or simply scan the chapter headings for whatever takes your fancy, this is a perfect book for thinking about food – and despite Slater’s reservations the last chapter will probably send you out to the shops for a packet of Pink Wafers!
10
In fact, you’ll get more than that. Written by a member of staff from the Science Museum, this book answers those questions you’ve always wanted to ask – ‘Could you dig your way to Australia?’ (Come on, admit it – you tried to on the beach when you were seven), ‘Are people with bigger heads cleverer?’ and’ Why do we walk on two legs?’ for example – as well as some – ‘Do spiders have ears?’– that might never have occurred to you. Each question is answered in conversational style, anticipating the reader’s responses and taking the explanation further. Whilst there is a fairly heavy concentration on the grosser side of science – poo, snot and gas feature heavily – there’s also plenty of technical terminology and you really do learn something new on every page. Even how to stop an ice-cream headache – so well worth a read for that alone! By Kath Bennett

Sunscreens
Do you know your factor 8’s from your factor 30’s and your UVA protection from your UVB? Browsing a display of sunscreens can certainly be confusing, so here’s a little help.
First to the basics: how do sunscreens work? Sunscreens, also commonly referred to as sun block, sun tan lotion and sun cream, are products which contain a combination of ingredients which help to prevent the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. There are two types of radiation, UVA has longer wavelengths and can cause lasting skin damage, skin aging and skin cancer, because they are not absorbed by the ozone layer and so can penetrate skin deeply, potentially causing the most harm. UVB has shorter waves, is partially absorbed by the ozone layer but can still cause sunburn and also skin damage and skin cancer. Most products focus on protecting against UVB rays, but those that describe themselves as broad spectrum provide protection against UVA and UVB. Sunscreens both absorb and reflect the sun’s harmful rays. You will see the expression ‘sun protection factor (SPF)’ on products. This is a measure of the products ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. For example if your skin would usually start to redden in the sun after 10 minutes, using a sunscreen with a factor of 30 suggests that you will not redden until you have been in the sun for 30 times as long as that which is 300 minutes.
depending on how fair your skin is as the fairer you are the faster you will generally burn. The time of day you are out will also have an impact. For example protection won’t be as good if you are exposed to full strength mid day sun compared to early morning rays. You should also remember that you will need to reapply sunscreens regularly throughout the day. There are a huge range of products to choose from. Sunscreens now come in lotions, creams, gels and oils. Many have additional ingredients to make them smell nicer, be water resistant, show up as a colour or be easy to rub in. There are also special varieties developed for the face and lips. One final thing to remember is that certain health conditions and medications can make a person more sensitive to sun exposure, so you might need to use a higher SPF if on antibiotics or antihistamines for example. If you are on medication it is best to seek professional advice. By Susan Brookes- Morris
You should remember that this is only a guide. You will also find additional guidance about which factor to choose

T-Shirt Tips
T-shirts have come a long way from the undergarments they once were. They were introduced by the U.S Navy more than a century ago, and then became a staple item for manual workers.
In the 1950s, the T-shirt was popularized in Hollywood by James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, and Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire and The Wild One. In the decades that followed, tees became more popular with both men and women. Today T-shirts are the most commonly purchased men’s clothing item. On average, each American owns about 15 of them, according to a recent survey of 6,000 men and women by trade group Cotton Inc. Cotton prices are rising though, so manufacturers have looked for cheaper alternatives. Many modern tees are made of low-quality cotton or cotton-blends. I’m sure I’m not the only person to be frustrated by a T-shirt which lost its shape after one wash, or bags in the wrong places after a couple of wears. When designers talk about tees they talk about fit, thickness, drape, and a T-shirt’s ability to hold its shape. These qualities are more often found in slightly pricier T-shirts.
brand isn’t using plied yarns, which are two single yarns twisted together to offer better strength, lustre and uniformity. If a shirt starts to lose its shape or stretch, it could be due to the lack of strength of the seams, insufficient twist in the yarn, or too few stitches per inch. The Good T-Shirt Guide Before buying: Check the seams, neckband, and hem. They should all lie flat and look smooth. Pay attention to the shoulder seams. Make sure that they are symmetrical. Avoid tees with tight or wrinkled underarm seams. This is a sign of poor construction. Check the weight of the fabric. Unless the T-shirt is of the “tissue tee” sort that’s supposed to be really sheer and meant to layer, women will generally want to be sure that the fabric is heavy enough to conceal their bra. Pull the shirt over your hand to check for transparency. Look for the most flattering neckline. V-necks flatter large chests, scoop necks elongate the neck, and crew necks enhance small busts.
So what can we look for on a label that indicates a good quality T-shirt? Look for extra-long-staple cotton, plied yarns, mercerized cotton, combed cotton, Supima cotton, and ring-spun cotton. Those terms generally suggest the cotton will be more durable and more lustrous. If a tee starts to show signs of deterioration after having been washed according to the care instructions, it could mean the

Water without the guilt
Who remembers their dad hosing the garden on warm summer evenings? We always seemed to have a lush lawn when I was a child, apart from the summer of 1976 when hosepipes were banned and we all used stand-pipes for weeks. But nowadays hosepipes are the horticultural equivalent of a bad taste joke: out of style and somewhat frowned upon. But gardens need water to survive so what can we do? Well the truth is, we have more than enough water in the UK to sustain an average garden, but it tends to fall in the winter when all the plants are dormant. A water butt is a simple, economical solution for most urban gardens. Butts will catch the rainwater from your gutter and store it until it’s required. They typically hold between 100 and 300 litres depending on size. You can now buy huge rainwater tanks which hold up 1000 litres and are great if you have the space. There are also underground storage tanks which hold over 2500 litres! With special attachments, stored rainwater can be fed into hoses and sprinklers, so you can use them guilt-free.
well rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost. This organic matter will help the soil retain any moisture it receives. Make sure the irrigation lines run under the tips of the branches rather than at the base of the plant. This will water the roots more efficiently. Make sure you mulch. Mulch can be a membrane, gravel, bark chips or cocoa shells. The aim is to keep moisture in the soil. I favour organic mulches because they gradually rot down and can be dug in to improve the soil texture further. A few simple measures will ensure that your garden stays green this summer without costing the earth! However, if you want to make the most of your saved water then irrigation systems are the best choice. They typically reduce the amount of water you use by 70-90%, which is a huge saving. Here are a few tips for getting the best from an irrigation system. Ground preparation is really important. Dig in lots of home-produced compost,

I don’t know how he does it. When it comes to packing for holidays it takes my husband four minutes flat. I look enviously at his little pile of shorts, T-shirts and underwear and wonder where I am going wrong, as I wrestle with zips and straps in a determined effort to squeeze everything in. Many of us do it - pack too much when we go on holiday - then end up wearing the same few items all week. So how can we make the job easier, quicker and (with ever stricter baggage allowances), cheaper? The answer is to remember that ‘less is more’ and to take only things we really love to wear in a capsule wardrobe that will cater for every occasion. The first step is to envisage how you see yourself spending your holiday. If it’s mainly sunbathing, all you need for the daytime is swimwear – a couple of bikinis per week plus a well cut swimsuit for genuine swimming or diving – flip flops and a loose fitting shirt to cover you up on the way to and from the beach or pool. If you plan on sightseeing or shopping, pack some comfortable sandals or pumps and a pair of shorts, cut off trousers or a skirt (neutral colours would be most versatile), and a

Packing Tips selection of coloured tops. Before deciding on which ones, lay them out and match them up. Choose colours and styles that go together, so that you can make up multiple outfits simply by switching items around.
Sarongs are also a great choice as they are both lightweight and versatile and may be used as a skirt, dress or wrap, depending on how they are tied.
tote bag onto the plane and afterwards use it for the beach, or when you go shopping. Follow these tips and you shouldn’t go far wrong, but if you do, after your holiday write down all the items you ended up wearing (or that you wish you could have worn!) and use this as a guide next time you pack. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti
Scarves make a good alternative and can also be used to wrap around and protect hair. A wide brimmed hat will shield your face and hair from the sun, and is also a great fashion accessory. Some fashion experts suggest you take as many dresses as you can fit in. Teamed up with jewellery, a clutch bag and heels they are great for evenings out, and are still suitable for daywear when worn with flatties and a tote bag. Remember to take at least one warm item for chilly evenings or windy locations. Don’t forget to pack a couple of pairs of sunglasses in different shapes to create a varied look. Finally, take an oversized

Who’s For Ice Cream?
In 1984 President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month! Isn’t that a fab idea? I think the UK should definitely follow suit on this one. Around 25% of all ice cream sold in the UK is vanilla. As a nation it seems we’re not terribly adventurous. Here are some more frozen facts:
There is actually a diet called ‘The Ice Cream Diet’...seriously! It was developed in Venice by an ice cream store (no surprises there)
The earliest known reference to ice-cream in English was in 1672. Approximately 15 billion litres of ice-cream are consumed worldwide every year - enough fill 5,000 Olympic swimming pools. According to NASA, ice-cream is among the top three items most missed by astronauts on space missions: the others are pizza and fizzy drinks.

First thing to do is choose an artist whose artistic style and ability match your expectations. Be sure to look through their portfolio and check on the quality and consistency of their work. Do you like their designs? Are the lines steady, the shading smooth and the colours solid? According to a 2003 study, 75% of people who get tattoos go on to regret it, so it’s important to do some serious homework before making that all important decision. After all, tattoos are very difficult, painful and expensive to remove!

Safety comes next. Make sure the studio and the tattoo artist are both registered with the local council. This is a legal requirement and they should have certificates proving their status. Certification assures certain basic standards of cleanliness and hygiene of premises, equipment and the individual performing the work. Check there is a current Health and Safety Certificate on display and that the artist wears gloves and uses new needles for each customer. Follow these simple guidelines and you should maximise your chances of a safe and successful inking experience! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Why Floss
You might clean your teeth religiously twice a day and feel that you are doing all you can to keep your gnashers looking and feeling clean and fresh, but if you fail to include flossing as part of your daily dental routine, you are only doing just over half the job. Every tooth has five surfaces, and brushing only gets to three of them (the top/bottom, back and front). If you don’t floss, it leaves the two side surfaces unclean and potentially subject to disease.
Food and sticky bacteria, commonly known as plaque, lodge in the space between teeth. If left, plaque generates acid which can cause cavities, irritate gums and

eventually lead to gum disease. Gum disease isn’t pretty. It eats away at gums and teeth and in advanced forms even attacks the bones that support the teeth and the lower third of the face. Floss is the only thing that can get into the space between teeth to remove these harmful bacteria. If done before brushing, flossing can expose a larger area for the fluoride in the toothpaste to act upon. The best way to care for your teeth is to combine plaque removal through flossing and brushing with chemical cleaning via toothpaste and mouth wash.
