Lifestyle & Leisure Torch Light The history of the Olympic torch The Olympic Games are almost upon us. The Olympic torch arrived in Britain on May 18th and is now travelling all around the country. The route is planned to take in 1000 towns and villages along the way, and is designed so that 95% of the population will be within 10 miles travelling distance of at least one stopping point. But what is the story behind the Olympic flame? During the ancient Games in Olympia, Greece, a flame ignited by the sun burned continually on the altar of the goddess Hera. The modern flame first made an appearance in the 1928 Olympics, held in Amsterdam, Holland, where it burned throughout the period of the Games. The tradition of the relay began in 1936 in Berlin and persists until this day. The torch is lit a few months before the start of the games, in Olympia, at the Temple of Hera. An actress, dressed in ceremonial robes uses a parabolic mirror to focus the rays of light from the sun, igniting a flame. This flame is then carried in a fire pot to the ancient Olympic stadium. It is taken to an altar and used to light the first runner’s torch. The design of the torch changes for each Olympics. The London torch is triangular in shape - the three sides represent the three times Britain has hosted the Olympics: 1908, 1948 and 2012. It is decorated with 8000 tiny cut-out circles, one for each of the runners who will carry the torch, and is constructed of a lightweight-but-strong metal alloy.

6

The route the flame then takes varies according to which city is hosting the Olympics. In the past it has been to the top of Mount Everest (Beijing 2008), and even into space (1996 and 2000)! It is carried on foot wherever possible, but also has to travel by other modes of transport, including boat and plane. On planes the fire has to be housed in a special lamp as open flames would not be allowed. As the torch is carried by relay, each runner carries it for only one part of its total journey. They then light the torch of the next runner. On average110 runners will take part each day, and each runner will run approximately 300m. Until the 1950s only men could carry the torch, and it took until 1968 in Mexico City before a woman was allowed to be the final runner. The first woman to do this was called Enriqueta Basileo. Carrying the torch is considered a great honour. Perhaps surprisingly, most of the runners are not athletes. They are chosen for many reasons, often because they have overcome personal difficulties, or because they are charity workers. The final runner is generally kept a secret until as close to the time of the Games as possible. Previous Olympians mooted as a possible final runner for 2012 include Steve Redgrave, Steve Ovett and Daley Thompson. By Tom Hancock

Ollie’s Fun Shack Play and Party Centre New Ollerton Ollie’s Fun Shack is the new and exciting Play and Party Centre to arrive in New Ollerton. ‘Ollie’s’ is the creation of husband and wife team, Chris and Steph Bramall. After having their son Thomas, Steph and Chris visited many play centres in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire area and felt that many were disappointing, impersonal and lacked that extra ingredient to make them special to both children and adults. Coming from a teaching and banking background Steph and Chris believed that they could combine their individual skills and experiences to create the type of play centre that they themselves would like to visit. So on the 1st of June Ollie’s Fun Shack will be born. Ollie’s is a careful mix of an inviting child friendly environment combined with a modern and trendy space for adults. The tropical beach theme will provide the perfect oasis even on the rainiest of British days!

freshly ground coffee, speciality teas and sumptuous cakes are sure to tempt even the strongest of willpowers! Ollie’s will run regular Toddler Time sessions which will meet the criteria of the EYFS. In addition further classes for toddlers will be held at Ollie’s such as Baby Ballet, Tambourine Tigers and Relax Kids. Come and join in the fun from the 1st June. A warm welcome awaits you. The Perfect Pair eans are one of the most versatile and adaptable items in a girl’s wardrobe, but how do you find your perfect match?

Choosing a pair that is right for your body shape – and not necessarily the latest fashion – will establish balance and correct proportion that is key to achieving the most flattering look. Short legs need to look longer, fat tummies flatter and big bums smaller, whilst slim waists and shapely legs need to be shown off! Pay attention to the rise, cut, fit and wash of your jeans. For example, hipsters elongate the body and make a bigger bottom appear smaller whilst low risers broaden slim hips but may also produce the ‘muffin top’ effect. Decide what you want to hide or show and then choose a style accordingly! If you are big on top, slim fit or skinny legged jeans – even if you have lovely slim legs – will make you look top-heavy whilst attracting unwanted attention to hips and thighs for pear shapes. The solution in both cases may be to wear boot cuts – a flattering style for most women. The slight flare draws the eye from thicker waists and wider hips and helps achieve a balanced look.

Don’t be tempted to wear jeans that are too small to ‘pull you in’. Clothing that is too tight generally makes you look fatter. Find a pair that fits you correctly at your largest point and then make the necessary adjustments elsewhere. If a tubby tummy is a problem for you, avoid tucks, pleats and button-up flies to keep the front of the jeans as flat as possible. A higher waistline can also help to keep everything tucked neatly away! Dark colours create a slimming effect so avoid paler or lighter washed out shades around problem areas. If your legs are heavy at the top, jeans that fade below the knee will draw attention away from your thighs. If tall and slender is what you are after, wear jeans with a narrower cut and make sure they are long enough to almost cover your shoes. Capri cuts are definitely out for smaller women as they shorten the leg. Finally, pay attention to pockets, stitching and other embellishments. Pockets positioned wide apart will make your bottom look bigger, as will flaps and fancy stitching. Wherever there is detail, there will be attention, so only wear it if you want to flaunt it! Use the information here as a guide about what to avoid or look for, but don’t get too bogged down. There is no substitute for actually going to the shop and trying on! The key is to accentuate your assets and then wear your jeans with confidence! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

What’s hot........And what’s not!

e often t a l k about trends in gardening, but unlike in clothing fashion, they tend to move more slowly. In fact, I reckon it takes around 10 years for a significant change to happen, and many of these stem (pardon the pun) from just a few sources. New trends begin with wild ideas from our top designers at flower shows like Chelsea and Hampton Court. These are then picked up by television and other media and slowly trickle down the chain into DIY stores and garden centres, where you and I can use them in our own gardens.

Tips For Eating Al Fresco Invest in a proper picnic blanket with waterproof backing if you like sitting on the ground. Even grass that appears dry can create an uncomfortable damp patch, or leave an unsightly stain that may be difficult to remove.

T

here’s nothing quite like eating outside to evoke that happy, carefree holiday mood, but with British weather so unpredictable we need to grab the opportunity when we can. Here are our five top tips for making sure you are ready to go ‘al fresco’! Check you have all the necessary equipment to hand. Stock up on charcoal and make sure the barbecue is in good condition and clean.

Use plastic cups and crockery. Choose disposable ones if you want a really easy life, but reusable ones will ultimately save you money and are more eco-friendly.Make sure your hands and utensils are thoroughly clean before cooking or serving food. If you are away from home, take along wet wipes or anti-bacterial hand-wash. Thoroughly cook food that is to be barbecued and keep picnic food cool in a cool box or bag. Avoid food that will melt or spoil easily, like chocolate or bananas. In addition, remember to sit in the shade if the weather is hot, and always slather on sunprotection. So there you have it: the perfect recipe for a funfilled outdoor dining experience. Bon appétit! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Get Knitted

t’s been described as the new Yoga. Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Geri Halliwell all do it and chances are your granny is an expert at it. So what is the latest craze to hit the 21st century? We are experiencing a knitting revival as women and men alike pick up long forgotten needles and yarn to create up-tothe-minute fashion items such as jumpers, scarves, hats and baby clothes. Gone are the dowdy knitwear patterns of yesteryear and in their place are the latest, trendy styles for you to knit and wear! Some accredit this revival to the recession – people are staying at home more and want something to do. Whatever the reason, sitting watching TV with needles clicking away eliminates any feelings of guilt you might otherwise experience!

Knitting is a fantastic way to relax and relieve stress. In addition, creating something personal and unique brings wonderful feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment. Many people knit gifts for family, friends or charity and thus experience the irreplaceable pleasure of giving. Many knitters are quite happy doing it alone, but increasingly knitting groups are springing up where patterns, tips and friendship are shared. This includes the internet with its growing community of knitting bloggers. So, why not dig out your granny’s needles and give knitting a try? By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

News from your MP

T

Mark Spencer MP

he Government has launched a campaign to highlight the risks of undiagnosed lung cancer, urging people to go and see their GP if they have had a cough for more than three weeks. It is one of the horrors of modern life that cancer touches so many of our lives, whether directly or by affecting our loved ones. Early diagnosis and research are so important, and alongside a bike ride I’m doing for Breast Cancer Research this summer, I’ve been trying to highlight the issue of cervical cancer among young women. I took up this issue when I was recently contacted by a constituent, whose best friend was told by her GP that she could not have a smear test because she was only 22. She had to go to a private clinic for the test and has since been diagnosed with cervical cancer, has undergone a hysterectomy and is enduring a course of intense chemotherapy and radiotherapy. While incidences of cervical cancer among young women under 25 are rarer than for those in their late twenties, they are by no means freak occurances, and my constituent put me in touch with the Mercedes Curnow Foundation, a charity calling for a reduction in the age of smear tests in England from 25 to 20 in line with the rest of the UK, following the death of Mercedes at 23 from cervical cancer. I was delighted to join them recently to hand in their petition of over 120,000 signatures to Downing Street.

I am not persuaded by arguments that the procedure or possible ‘false positives’ are so traumatic that women in their early twenties should be denied the opportunity to allay their fears, and I do feel that the Government must be clear as to why the test is available to women in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland at 20 but their English neighbours must wait another five years. Broad-brush politics is rarely positive and I am not proposing universal testing for under 25 year olds, but I do feel that the ramifications of cervical cancer, particularly when diagnosed late, are sufficiently devastating that those displaying symptoms early should not be turned away for doing the right thing. As women of this generation are so aware of the symptoms of breast cancer, I would ask you to educate yourself as to the symptoms of cervical cancer and do not assume it’s an old woman’s disease: it really could save your life.

I have also written to the Rt Hon Andrew Lansley MP, Minister for Health, highlighting the refusal of some GPs to perform smear tests on women below the age of 25, and to encourage a positive ‘opt-in’ policy for women aged between 20 and 25 and I look forward to him clarifying the Government’s position. I completely understand that the need for universal testing for those aged between 20 and 25 may not be borne out by statistics, but what has horrified me not just as a politician but as a husband and a father, is that a young woman who was taking an active interest in her health, was refused a simple test by her GP which might have saved her the trauma and anguish of having to undergo a hysterectomy at 22.

Local Musician releases Debut Video

ocal young musician Chris Miggells is set to release his debut music video on the 1st of June. The 21-year-old pianist from Boughton plays the renowned classical pieceNocturne in E-flat, composed by Frédéric Chopin. The music video was filmed at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham on their Steinway Grand piano. Chris says “I’m very excited about this release, particularly as I was able to film at such a prestigious venue as the Royal Concert Hall, a big thanks to Kate Collins for making this possible.” “It was quite a nerve racking experience because this is the first time I have made a music video. It was a long day, we did a four hour shoot which meant a lot of playing. I really wanted to get everything right on my side of things, so we kept going until I thought we had captured the best takes possible. The sound in the

concert hall was superb and really helped bring out my performance! It has been great to have this video released and shared with the world.” The video will initially be available for online viewing at www.YouTube.com/ ChrisMiggells and will be broadcast world wide on many other video sharing sites Contact Chris: Facebook at: www.Facebook.com/ChrisMiggells Twitter @ChrisMiggells

he Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee this month. Here are few Jubilee facts and figures in commemoration. The Queen is the second longest serving monarch after Queen Victoria who reigned for 63 years.

Her Majesty is even on Facebook. She also has a website, a You Tube channel and a Twitter account!

During the last 60 years, the Queen has undertaken 261 official overseas visits, including 78 state visits, to 116 different countries. During these visits she’s been the recipients of some extremely unusual gifts which include: two tortoises from the Seychelles; a seven-year-old bull elephant called Jumbo from the president
