Practical Fashion

The days are getting longer and the weather finally seems to be over its ice age phase so it’s about time to get back outside again and enjoy nature. However, just because you’re trekking through muddy woods or just out for the day with the little ones, it doesn’t mean that you have to leave your fashion sense at home. Practicality and fashion might not always have gone hand in hand; just take a look at some of Vivienne Westwood’s designs. That being said, it is easy to dress sensibly and still look great so why not give it a go?

If you’re a pear shape, try going for jeans with a slight boot cut to balance out your fuller hips or thighs to keep you in proportion. For all the apple shaped ladies, your best style is a straight leg as it will show off your assets. Jeans with a bit of stretch are also a good idea as they’ll give you a bit more breathing space for your tummy. High-waisted jeans give petite women the appearance of an extra few inches of height and skinny jeans show off tall women’s legs beautifully. Next up on the list is tops. These are really easy because you can get away with a simple white vest top if you’re not in the mood for anything fancy and still look pretty stylish. Alternatively, opt for a simple pattern to look chic on your day out.

For example, if you’re on a day out with the little ones, you’re going to need tough comfortable clothes to keep up with their antics. Jeans fit the bill perfectly Wellies are useful! They’re easy here: they’re to clean and there’s a wide range hard wearing, of pretty designs to choose from. they’re comfy and, unless you’re very fussy or label Stripes are a big trend for obsessed, they’re nice and spring/summer 2013 so cheap so you don’t have wear your print with pride! to worry too much about Another easy way to add a them getting mucky or a bit splash of style to your outfit bedraggled. What’s more is to add a figure hugging with all the different styles blazer. These are also out there, there’s a perfect really easy to get hold of in pair for everyone. different coloured stripes. Try going for blue or red

stripes for a patriotic sailor look. Last but certainly not least; let’s talk shoes. As lovely as heels are, they’re not ideal for adventurous activities. They just don’t mix well with mud, gravel or cobbles so this is where fashion might have to take a back seat – but it doesn’t have to! The answer to this shoe practicality issue is wellies. Wellies are useful, they’re easy to clean and there’s now a wide range of pretty designs to choose from on the high-street so there’s no need to settle for plain dark green or navy. Keep a look out in large supermarkets for great value wellies with lovely patterns. Now that your outfit is sorted, let’s just hope that the British weather holds up so that you can showcase your new look in the wonderful outdoors. Rhiannon Chown r_chown@yahoo.co.uk

A

t a time when I’m making preparations for my summer holidays and browsing through pictures of tropical locations, I can’t help but compare them with the images of England that I hold in my mind. It wasn’t until I visited America last year, that I realised how very English we are, and how we really do live up to the stereotype we’ve been given. I wouldn’t say I’m a shrinking violet when it comes to confidence, but I really did feel quite reserved. As a nation, I don’t think we’re very good at expressing ourselves, our thoughts or our emotions, and whilst I’m not advocating yelling at random people in the street because “your dust cart is blocking my parking lot” or applauding in the cinema (both of which I experienced whilst over there last year), I do think that when it comes to

Garden View

gardens we are, in the main, a little unadventurous. In fact, I would go as far as to say that a striped lawn and three borders are as traditional as our Sunday roast! But fear not, it doesn’t have to be this way. Expressing yourself outdoors needn’t mean exposing your inner most secrets, but I do think your outdoor space should reflect your personality. The residents at Bestall Towers are generally neat and tidy (in fact clutter makes my

Jobs to do this month (just for fun!) Plant up pots and containers with annual bedding plants. Go crazy and plant up a coloured glazed pot with a wild colour combo Re-shape your lawn and introduce new borders to break from the norm

head hurt), so my garden reflects this with its simple straight lines, well ordered borders, immaculate patio, and perfect lawn! So what does my garden say about me? I’m a clean freak, with an obsession for perfection and a need to control my environment … pretty accurate I’d say. So what does your garden say about you? Does it reflect who you are, or maybe who you were? Maybe it’s time for a change and to let loose that wild side, paint the fence black and plant only orange flowering plants. Whatever you do, break from the norm and express yourself. Contact Lee Bestall at www. inspiredgardens.net Lee Bestall

The Perfect Shower

heir world may seem light years away from ours, but the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are no doubt experiencing similar wonder and excitement as they anticipate the arrival of their first baby. With around a month to go until Junior makes his or her appearance, now is when close friends or family members should throw Kate a baby shower, as a chance to impart a few pearls of wisdom whilst showering her and baby with gifts. Traditionally, a baby shower is thrown for first time mums-to-be by close family members or best friends a month or two before baby is due – just in case Junior decides to put in an early appearance - and before the expectant mum is too tired or uncomfortable to enjoy the event. Like any other celebration, a baby shower can be as grand or as simple an affair as you choose, but perhaps the best are kept small enough to hold in someone’s home where it can be kept cosy and intimate. Invitations should be sent out about a month before, and there is no easier way to do this than via email, text or Facebook. You don’t have to spend a fortune in time or money decorating the room to look fun and welcoming. A few balloons spruced up with say dummies, rattles

10

or teething rings are all it might take!

Similarly, by inviting guests to contribute to the food you can keep work and expense to a minimum, but you might want to come up with a list of suggestions if you want to avoid ending up with a dozen plates full of sausage rolls and very little else! The receiving and opening of gifts is possibly the highlight of any baby shower. You could leave it entirely to the guests to decide what to give, but it is becoming increasingly acceptable for the expectant mum to compile a wish list should guests prefer some guidance. No self respecting baby shower should pass without a few games. Some ideas include Guess the Baby (from photos guests bring of themselves); Match the Celebrity to Baby (from pictures which have been cut from magazines), Feed the Baby (spoon feed porridge or baby

food to your partner while blindfolded), or alternatively see who can guzzle down a bottle of milk the quickest!) or why not set a baby quiz? Finally, to ensure that the happy events of the baby shower remain emblazoned in the future mummy’s memory forever, have a memory book on hand for guests to write personal messages or words of advice, and consider capturing the occasion on camera.

With all these elements in place you are sure to have a baby shower to remember! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Know your rights as an employee

I

f your employer is ‘insolvent’ this means it can’t pay its debts. You have rights if this happens and can make a claim for any money you are owed.

If you work for a company that’s insolvent, this means one of the following: Administration - where your employer asks an ‘administrator’ to come in to try to keep the company going Liquidation - when a company is closed and its assets are sold to pay the people it owes money to (creditors) Receivership - like liquidation but it’s usually arranged by a single creditor that’s lent money securely (eg a bank), and the assets are sold to pay just that creditor Claiming money owed to you The insolvency practitioner will send you claim forms. If this doesn’t happen, you should write to them. If you’re not sure who they are, you can contact Companies House (0303 1234 500) to find out. What you can get The money comes from the government’s National Insurance Fund. It’s not guaranteed that you’ll get everything your employer owes to you but you can claim for: Redundancy wages - up to 8 weeks’ worth holiday pay - up to 6 weeks’ worth

Statutory notice pay - 1 week after 1 month’s service, going up to 1 week per year of service (up to a maximum of 12 weeks) unpaid pension contributions (your pensions administrator does this for you) Basic award for unfair dismissal Your statutory notice period (the minimum legal notice period your employer has to give you) is: a week’s notice if you’ve been employed for between a month and 2 years 2 weeks’ notice plus an extra week for each year you’ve worked if you’ve been employed for 2 years (this goes up to a maximum of 12 weeks) You can claim for statutory notice pay if: you’ve worked your statutory notice period but not been paid by your employer you were dismissed without notice you don’t work your full notice You can only claim up to £450 a week for your wages. Dare to Bare

e all know crash diets are a bad idea, but impending holidays cry out for a quick fix. If you need to lose a few pounds before jetting off to foreign climes, we offer a few helpful hints and tips that will have you feeling fabulous by the pool! Eat five or six small meals rather than three big ones. This will keep your blood sugar level steady and reduce cravings. Write down what you eat – this will stop sneaky snacking.

Limit the amount of potatoes, pasta and bread you eat and bulk up meals with vegetables. Raw vegetables are ideal because your body burns extra calories as it digests them. Avoid processed foods which can be high in fat, sugar and salt, all of which encourage fluid retention. Chewing sugar-free gum takes your mind off wanting something to eat.

Eat slowly and concentrate on enjoying your food.

Remember drinks have calories too – stick to water and use skimmed milk in tea and coffee. Green tea is rumoured to help your body burn fat.

Watch your portion size – use smaller plates so you feel like you’re eating more.

Investigate fat-burning supplements. Staff at a good health food shop will

Dukeries Lions & U3A DUKERIES U3A

As I write this , the weather has taken a turn for the better, but will it last? Will we have a much sought after hot summer, or will it be cold and wet in the manner of 2012. We shall see in due course. But hot or cold, wet or dry, your local Dukeries U3A will continue to attract new members, engage in many worthwhile activities, and be a welcome haven for local retired, or semi-retired, persons wishing to enhance their social life. The walking groups have some interesting routes lined up, and the theatre and outings groups have been very active recently. One visit that attracted a lot of interest was to Adam Henson’s farm-park in Gloucestershire. (Adam’s Farm of the BBC’s Countryfile programme). This outing was well subscribed and the weather on the day was glorious! With over twenty group activities on offer at your local U3A, perhaps you are interested in knowing more about this organisation? We meet at the Jubilee Hall on Wellow Road, Ollerton, on the third Monday of each month - starting at 1pm. Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday the 17th June. Come along to the meeting. You will receive a warm welcome!

C

Ollies 1st Birthday

hris and Steph Bramall opened Ollie’s Fun Shack, in New Ollerton, last June. Previously working in the banking and education sectors, the couple tell Spotlight that they are putting the experience of their previous careers to good use. But how is working together treating them? How long have you been married? 5 years How many children do you have? 1 at the moment, Thomas, who is 3 but we have another on its way!

What made you decide to work together? Well, fate really took a hand at getting us to work together. I (Chris) worked for a high street bank and was made redundant just after Steph had handed in her notice at work. Steph was a Primary School Teacher and although she loved working with children found that all the paperwork and stresses prevented her enjoying the job.

26

We’d been with Thomas to several play centres and thought we had several ideas of how we would like to run one. We were told about a play centre for sale in New Ollerton and when we went to look at it we thought it was ideal for us to develop.

What is the best thing about working together? I (Chris) actually get to spend time with my wife! With our old jobs we’d get home, have a bite to eat and then it was time for bed. There was very little time to talk to each other. It’s great now, I (Steph) understand Chris’ job and he understands mine and we can help each other. We do still bring work home, but it’s shared and more importantly we enjoy it! What makes Ollie’s different? We’ve spend a lot of time thinking about what we want from a play centre when we would visit one. We feel that it’s important that not only do the children have fun when visiting but the adults do too. We have tried to make sure we have comfortable seats, free wifi, magazines available to read, good quality coffee, homemade cakes and a good menu. All the things that we feel are important in making a visit to Ollie’s a pleasurable experience.

With my (Steph), teaching background we have really tried to make Ollie’s special to the children. We often have a creative session running and we have local businesses coming to Ollie’s each week to run classes like, Tambourine Tigers, Baby Ballet, Baby Massage and just recently Pyjama Drama joined us. We really believe that it is important to support local businesses and that’s why we use our local butcher, S Allwoods, to supply our sausages, chicken, mince and bacon. The best thing to do would be to visit us if you have small children and fancy a few hours break!! So 1 year on, would you do it again? Yes (both), definitely. We’ve learnt such a lot over the last year and it’s been really hard work but we’ve had lots of fun and laughs and met so many really nice people. We are looking forward to the next year and beyond. Ollies Fun Shack can be found on Darwin Drive, Sherwood Energy Village, New Ollerton, NG22 9DP. 01623 860842

n rivers and canals, streams, lakes, reservoirs and sea, angling is one of the UK’s most popular sports. It is estimated that 3.3 million people participate on a regular basis.

Gone a’Fishing

People enjoy fishing for a variety of reasons. Some love the peace and tranquillity they find outdoors. Others relish the opportunity to socialise with like-minded individuals and take part in competitions, usually organised by angling clubs. Many pick up their rods each weekend because they enjoy the challenge of trying to outsmart the fish, deciding which stretch of the water to fish in, persuading the fish that the lure is food, and of course the thrill of the catch. Fishing enthusiasts need a rod, something to attract the fish, nets, and suitable clothing. Rods can vary hugely in price depending on their size, quality and specifications. Skills involve casting a rod, tying knots, and catching and releasing the fish. Fishermen (and women) believe it is the combination of good equipment and fishing skills that leads to greatest success.

28

There are a variety of different lures and baits. Natural baits include live worms and maggots. Artificial baits are often made from types of human food. Man made lures seek to replicate the food that fish eat. Different ones are suitable in different circumstances and most anglers have their favourites. Three types of fishing are most prevalent in the UK: Fly fishing - Used to catch fish like trout and salmon, as well as pike, bass and

carp. Fish are caught using very light artificial flies made by tying hair, fur, feathers and other materials together. They are cast with a fly rod and a fly line. Fresh water fishing - Uses water that contains minute quantities of dissolved salts. Some of the most important freshwater fish are bass, catfish, pickerel, pike sunfish, trout, salmon, muskellunge, sturgeon and

walleye. ‘Coarse fishing’ is the term used to describe fishing in fresh water for any species other than salmon or trout. Sea fishing - This obviously takes place in or by the sea. Most sea angling takes place from a boat, but it can also be done in estuaries, on piers and from rocks. Piers and jetties are ideal places for catching mackerel and codling. Mullet, flounder and dab are often found in estuaries and harbours. Conger eel live in the foam covered seas next to rocky headlands, and bass can be caught from beaches. There is a requirement for most anglers to have a rod licence and fishing permit. The Environment Agency oversees this and fines may be imposed for none compliance. Anglers must also abide by local byelaws. Izaak Walton was a seventeenth century fisherman who wrote The Compleat Angler. He famously said, ‘I have laid aside business and gone a’fishing.’ Why not join the 3.3 million people who regularly do the same? By Susan Brookes-Morris
