Cyber Bullying

Housetrain Your Puppy

Although playground bullying is not new it’s nature has changed with the advent of smart phones and social media. Now we see more cyber bullying, or rather we don’t see it as it tends to be hidden and carried out in secret. Almost half of all young people say they have been bullied online and more than 70% say they’ve seen it happening. As parents it can be difficult to know what to do if your child is being bullied, or conversely is a bully. Here are some tips: Discuss bullying with your child from an early age. Discuss netiquette. Adults sometimes behave more aggressively when they are behind the safety of a computer screen, and it’s the same for children, who are still learning to navigate the online world. Make it clear that being a target is not their fault. Make it clear that whether it’s in real life or online bullying is never acceptable.

Advise your child to protect their phone number by only giving it out to trusted members or family members. Tell them to keep track of who they have given it to. If your child has received a bullying message, tell them to screenshot it and send it to you. Make a note of the time and date it was sent and the number it came from, as evidence to show teachers or police. Do not respond to the message. The phone number or email will probably identify the source. If the bully gets no response then they tend to stop doing it. Don’t panic if your child is the bully. It doesn’t mean they will grow into a terrible human being. But bullying behaviour can often be a cry for help. Perhaps they are finding the teen years more stressful than they are letting on. Maybe they are struggling to negotiate friendships and schoolwork. Make time to talk with them, not only about their own issues but about the impact they might be having on someone else’s life. Rotting Fascias? - Leaking Gutters? WINTER SUMMER SALE SALE UP TO

The thing which put me off acquiring a puppy, despite the wide-blue pleading eyes of my daughter, was the thought of housetraining. I’d stumbled through toilet-training my three toddlers and frankly the experience broke me, so I did not relish the thought of starting again with the equivalent of a fourlegged toddler! But eventually those wide blue eyes worked their magic and Frodo the insanely cute Cockerpoo joined our family. If I’d known how much easier housetraining a puppy is compared with housetraining a small human I would now be running a dog shelter rather than a bed, breakfast and chauffeur service for preteens. Puppies are primed to please, unlike toddlers! Housetraining is all about the three ‘Rs’: Routine, Relief, Reward. But first you must accept that pooing and peeing is normal dog behaviour. Don’t ever punish a pup for peeing or pooing in the wrong place, that will just teach him that you are not to be trusted and to be more creative in his hiding place next time he has to go! It’s up to you to teach him where you want him to answer his calls of nature. Dogs are more likely to want to relieve themselves at certain times: after sleeping, eating or playing generally, so routinely take the puppy into the garden after each of these activities

and wait until he pees or poos. As soon as he finishes give him a little treat. The important thing is to stay with your puppy until he’s relieved himself, so you know he’s done his business and can praise him and give him a treat at the right time. Dogs have their own ‘behavioural language’ that signify they might need the toilet, such as sniffing at the door, circling or staring at you. If you find it difficult to read the clues and he makes a mistake, don’t punish, just be more vigilant next time or simply set an alarm and let him out every hour or so, rewarding appropriate toilet behaviour. Night time is the most difficult time and requires the most work. For the first few nights you’ll probably have to get up and let him out a couple of times. Say bed him down at 10pm, then let him out at 1am and 4am, getting up at 7am…obviously alter the times to suit you. Once he’s got the hang of it, drop one of the night time trips, then as his bladder control improves drop the other one. Frodo housetrained within a fortnight and was night trained in roughly the same amount of time though we had one or two little accidents during that period. Friends have suggested their dogs were housetrained in shorter or longer periods so clearly there is a variation of ‘normal’.....Good luck.

A Good Read Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice

Girl Underground by Morris Gleitzman

Rice published her seminal gothic novel in 1976.

Bridget is an 11-year-old girl who is

Daniel, a young reporter is approached by a mysterious man who offers to tell him his life story. The man is in his 20s and yet seems melancholy beyond his years. And Daniel soon learns why, as the man – Louis – tells a story that begins in the year 1791 in New Orleans.

you’d expect. Her dad does a roaring trade in dodgy Russian blenders and smuggling goods out of Turkmenistan, whilst her brother is in prison for robbery. Yes, Bridget is worried she will say the wrong thing and give herself away. So, when her new friend, Menzies, asks her to help him she is worried that people might start asking questions.

Devastated by the death of his brother, Louis gives up on life and at this low point he meets an enigmatic young man named Lestat – who turns out to be a vampire seeking a companion.

Especially when it turns out that it involves breaking into the Australian government to try and see the Prime Minister! This hugely entertaining novel from Gleitzman deals with the serious issue of refugees in Australia, and debates the rights and wrongs of keeping them in detention centres as illegal immigrants.

With his permission he turns Louis into a vampire and the two embark on a lonely life moving from city to city and continent to continent under the cover of darkness.

Most people are familiar with the vampire myth as originally written by Bram Stoker in the 19th century. A blood thirsty monster whose sole aim is to kill, and perhaps transform his victims into vampires.

Known for her gothic style, it is Rice’s love of her hometown of New Orleans that comes through in this wonderfully evocative novel. Her descriptions bring the city to life and she gives her vampires a voice that speaks of the agony of eternity.

All she wants is to stay anonymous in the hope that no one will find out about her family.

For 70 years this was pretty much how vampires were perceived, until Anne

This hugely influential work has shaped the genre ever since.

You see, Bridget isn’t like the other pupils, and her family is not what

about to start at a new school. Not just any school, but one of Australia’s top private boarding schools.

The reader will identify with the views of both Bridget and Menzies who cannot see the fairness in keeping children ‘behind bars’ when all they have done is escape from their homeland in fear for their lives. This is one to spark discussion! By Willow Coby

Five Ways Yoga Can Help You We all know that it’s a good thing to eat a healthy, wholesome diet, to manage stress and to move our bodies and that there are so many wonderful, fun ways to exercise; pilates, gymnastics, running, cycling, swimming or football, the list goes on. I’ve recently been inviting the people in my yoga classes to consider the reasons they come to their mat.

the benefits to your mental health, skin and general sense of well-being.

This has led me to thinking that they could all just as easily join in a spinning class or go rock climbing to get their bodies moving, blow away some cobwebs and work towards achieving or maintaining a healthy body shape.

Improved sleep quality I always finish my yoga classes with a pose called ‘savasana’ (shah-vahsnah), and I love both practicing it and leading it. The realisation that there’s nothing that I need to do is just one of my favourite parts and of course, it can make you sleepy, but having a regular physical (asana) practice can honestly help you stack up Z’s when you get home.

Don’t get me wrong, yoga can and will do all of these things for you and so much more. Yes, there’s more. Even more than I’ve detailed below. Some of these may surprise you so let’s start with the obvious: Improved stress management Practicing yoga is an excellent way for people to be able to manage stressful situations. If you read my blog posts, you may be aware that I’m passionate about the nervous system and the body’s stress response. Taking time to pause, move mindfully and take a deep breath will really work wonders for all of your body systems, including the immune, digestive, reproductive systems, not to mention

Practising being able to bring your attention to your breath during your yoga class can also be hugely beneficial when you’re not on your mat and you’re faced with a difficult decision or situation. Always come back to your breath.

A sense of being part of the bigger picture The word yoga is derived from the ancient Sanskrit word “yui” which means to yoke or unite. Regardless of race, gender or religion, we all share this beautiful planet with some truly remarkable creatures from the teeniest, tiniest insects to the largest of mammals. Small, seemingly insignificant blades of grass to huge great magnificent trees. We all live together. We are part of the universe and therefore the universe

is part of us and so it makes sense to treat our home and fellow beings with kindness, respect and love. If this is all sounding a bit ‘hippy’ for you, as my son would say, perhaps you can identify with how you feel towards your fellow yogis as you finish a class; a little bit more connected? Maybe the sensation that you’ve had a shared experience? It’s worth noticing how you feel the next time you put your mat away. Non-attachment This sounds like a bit of an odd reason for ‘Why Yoga?’ but thinking of the bigger picture; everything is temporary, and nothing is permanent. Does anything really belong to you? All very deep philosophical questions that can sometimes make my brain ache a little bit BUT consider your feelings and emotions. One day you may wake up in a foul mood; having a regular yoga practice helps us to know that this dark mood is just a feeling. Feelings pass; they are not permanent. Neither are the joyful moods of glee. The human experience is to notice and enjoy each moment as we live it rather than to worry about past or future events. Time just for you How often do you bring yourself to a place of stillness and quiet or take time just to focus on how your breath is coming into your body? Or to focus on how your hips move as you walk up the stairs? Or the way your shoulders feel when carrying a heavy bag as opposed to when your hands are empty? I’m guessing not often.

Speaking just for myself, I very rarely sit down to do ‘nothing’ without having my internal voice telling me that actually, I should be folding the laundry or reading that very important text book. Feelings of guilt can sometimes get in the way of your you time. “Yoga is the perfect opportunity to be curious about who you are” says yoga teacher and author Jason Crandell If this has given you an idea that you might like to try yoga, I say ‘that’s fantastic!’ because having a regular practise at home is brilliant and can have so many more benefits for you than just the ones I’ve detailed here. I’d urge you to try a couple of classes with a qualified teacher, who will ensure that you learn poses to practise at home, safely. There are so many wonderful yoga teachers and I’m willing to bet that there is a good one near to you. If you’re curious, get in touch with a yoga teacher and find out what kind of yoga they teach, what their classes are like, what kind of groups do they lead? Even better, seek out a friend who can recommend a yoga teacher because personal recommendations really do speak volumes. Sending love & light your way, Lee-ann www.AllYouYoga.co.uk

National Volunteers Week

Cutting - Colourist Hair Extensions PROFESSIONAL HAIR EXTENSIONS CUTTING AND COLOURING IN NOTTINGHAM CREATES STYLES WITH CARE AND PASSION National Volunteers’ Week 1st – 7th June This year, Volunteers’ Week is about volunteering for all – celebrating the huge range of people who give their time in so many ways. Could you volunteer, and why should you bother? Studies have found that taking time out to help others reduces stress levels, improves immunity and increases lifesatisfaction. This is because helping someone else interrupts tension-producing patterns and replaces it with a sense of purpose, which leads positive emotions. Whether you’re looking for a change in career or advancement in your current one volunteering is an excellent way to boost your prospects. Volunteers tend to create a positive impression, appearing more innovative, creative and skilful. In an Adweek article on the state of recruitment in 2015, they found that recruiters rank volunteer participation higher than personal presentation, political affiliations and spelling and grammar errors when looking at a candidate’s potential. This is probably because employers value transferable soft skills and volunteering gives you plenty of those, particularly problem-solving, teamwork, leadership and people skills. Candidates with real-world experience also tend to be more insightful and ready to be more hands-on in projects. Away from the corporate world many people look around their community and long to make a difference but don’t know how. Look for community volunteering projects and get involved.

It gives you the chance to think about the kind of community and world you want to live in, and to be part of something bigger than yourself. If you’re still not sure where to start your volunteering journey think about where your passions lie. Maybe you love animals, are passionate about butterflies, or you want to share music, or life experience, or gardening skills. Look on the web, there will probably be some volunteer group where your passion or knowledge will be useful. If you are feeling adventurous volunteering abroad allows you to travel with a purpose.

LgHairdressing provides hair extensions, cutting and creative colouring to fit everyones needs.

Before deciding on a programme it’s advisable to ask: • How will it benefit the local community? • Does the organisation respect the local culture? • What is the reason behind your volunteering trip? • What problem will the end-product help solve? Volunteering abroad changes how you see the world as you meet people daily from different countries, backgrounds and quality of life. Many of us are lonely in our modern lives. Maybe we moved away from our families for work, or we’re divorced, or widowed, or the children have left home. Volunteering introduces you to people from all walks of life and provides a means of making real friends who can have a lasting impact on you. Volunteering can shake you out of old routines and help you figure out where you want to head next. You might come up with ideas on how to improve your own community, or even discover a new life calling. By Sarah Davey

Travel Insurance

Understanding Travel Insurance It can seem like just one more extra cost you could do without, but travel without it and you could be in trouble.

expensive while Canada, the US and the Caribbean are much more so due to the incredibly high cost of medical care in those regions.

Crippling costs - You risk footing a very large bill should you need healthcare or have your baggage lost or stolen.

Declare pre-existing conditions certain medical conditions will add to the cost of your insurance, because insurance is about risk and certain ailments make it more likely that you might require medical attention.

Something as simple as a stomach bug in California which requires treatment and later flights home, could cost in the tens of thousands of pounds. A broken hip in a European destination could lead to a bill of £15,000 Don’t forget - If you are planning any sports or other activities, mention it. Skiing and extreme sports are obvious examples, but scuba diving and other activities you may not think of as “extreme” may still need extra cover. Know how much it would cost to replace baggage, from suitcases to clothes, to jewellery, including wedding rings. Why it matters where you’re going EU countries tend to be less

It may be worth looking at insurers which specialise in providing this type of insurance. Tell them everything - Even if it feels like you are hiking up the cost of your insurance policy. You don’t want your insurance to be invalid if you need to make a claim. Read! - When you get your policy, make sure you read the full terms and conditions and the medical declaration carefully, so you understand exactly what you’re covered for. By Tom Hancock

June Recipe

Green Gooseberry Jam This wonderfully tart jam goes well with scones and cream or creme fraiche and makes a lovely filling for Victoria sandwich cakes. Makes: 2 jars (approximately) Preparation and cooking time: 1 hour A cooking thermometer is necessary for this recipe. Also jam jars and a saucer. The saucer should be placed in the freezer to keep it cold. Ingredients 900g Slightly under-ripe gooseberries, topped and tailed 900g-1kg Granulated sugar 600ml water Method First wash your jam jars in hot soapy water, then rinse well. Put them into a preheated oven at 160°C/gas 3 until you are ready to use them.

has dissolved or it may crystallise during storage. Once the sugar has dissolved bring the jam to a rapid but steady boil and boil until it reaches a temperature of between 105°C and 110°C. After about 15 minutes your jam should have become more viscous and clear and you will need to see whether setting point has been reached. This is called the ‘wrinkle test’. Remove the saucer from the freezer. Take the pan off the heat, spoon a little jam onto the plate and leave until completely cold. Then push it across the plate with your forefinger. It should wrinkle up if it’s ready. If it only wrinkles slightly, pop the saucer back in the freezer and bring the jam back to the boil and boil for a few more minutes.

Put the fruit and water only into a large, heavy-based saucepan. Bring to the boil, then simmer gently until the skins are soft. If you add the sugar the skins will not soften.

Skim any scum from the top of the jam and pour it into the prepared jars. Cover the surface of the jam with waxed discs, wax-side down, and either quickly cover each jar with a dampened round of cellophane and rubber band or leave to go cold before covering with cellophane or a screw-top lid.

Add the sugar and stir over a low heat until it has dissolved completely. Don’t boil the jam before the sugar

Sealing the jars well prevents the build-up of condensation under the lid, which could lead to mould.

Never Too Early

Book an eye examination for your child A child’s development and learning can be hindered by undiagnosed or uncorrected sight defects, so early and regular eye examinations are essential to give them the best chance of succeeding in their education. Rapid visual development takes place between birth and 3-4 years of age. Many visual defects such as longsight (hyperopia), short-sight (myopia), a turning eye (strabismus) or a rugby ball-shaped eye (astigmatism) can be inherited. Most visual problems are treated better if they are diagnosed early on. It’s not necessary to wait until a child can read the letters on a conventional chart before taking them for an eye examination. Special picture charts and tests can be used and it’s quite possible to take certain measurements without any interaction from the child at all. Doctors, health visitors and some school nurses will carry out rudimentary vision checks, but only an optometrist will be able to provide a comprehensive accurate assessment. Here are some signs to look out for but it’s important to say that some children show no signs of anything being wrong at all, yet they may still have a serious underlying vision defect. • Frequent eye rubbing • Dark circles under the eyes • Obvious discomfort in bright sunshine • Watery eyes • One eye larger than the other • One or both eyes turning inwards or

outwards, even if it’s only sometimes • A white pupil visible in family photos, particularly where flash has been used • Holding books very close • Aversion to reading • Sitting right next to the TV • Red-rimmed eyes, or sore-looking eyelids • Excessive blinking • Short attention span for close-up tasks • Poor eye-hand co-ordination It might sound obvious but choose an optometrist who likes children (not all of them do!) and who puts them at ease. When you go into the practice there should be children’s books or possibly a toy or two available to keep them occupied while they wait. A child-friendly optometrist will understand if your toddler wants to run around the room periodically or alternatively doesn’t want to engage at all. If your child has special needs such as autism or anxiety and needs to visit the practice to see the room and meet the staff before attending for an appointment this should be an option. Choose someone you feel comfortable with and your child will probably feel comfortable too. Your child’s sight is precious. Book and eye examination today.

World Blood Donor Day is June 14th Most of us have had or know someone who has had a blood transfusion. Blood donation is vital to help treat thousands of seriously ill patients every day and new donors are desperately needed. Currently only 4% of the eligible population are active blood donors. Here are 10 reasons to consider giving blood: Life-saver - You change lives each time you give blood. Every blood donation can save or improve the lives of up to three adults or six children. Desperate need - NHS Blood and Transplant needs many more donors to come forward to make sure the nation’s blood stocks remain at a safe level for the future. Day-to-day needs - You may think blood is only used for massive blood loss in A&E patients, but your blood could help many different people. Donated blood is also used for patients having surgery, maternity emergencies, and for people with cancer or blood disorders. 6000 donations are needed per DAY! It’s true that changes in medical practices mean demand for donated blood has reduced. But hospitals across England and North Wales still need around 6,000 blood donations every day to treat patients. A quick pint - If you book an appointment, the whole process takes less than an hour. One hour, every three to six months. Just a short amount of time to do something wonderful for another human being.

You might be a missing type Blood from all groups is needed but some blood groups are particularly vulnerable to shortfall such as O negative – which can be given to all patients in an emergency: think of those episodes of Casualty or ER where the doctor in charge yells ‘Where’s the O-NEG’!

5000

You might be young - We need more young donors. Around half of current donors are aged over 45.

DOUBLE SIDED LEAFLETS

The more young people get involved the better future blood stocks will be safeguarded. You can start donating at 17. You might be BAME - Are you black, Asian or from an ethnic minority? Please consider becoming a donor as some rare blood types are more common among these communities. Conditions such as sickle cell and thalassemia are also more likely to affect these groups and patients require regular blood transfusions, ideally from donors from a similar ethnic background. There are biscuits - Free food! Around 6 million biscuits are eaten by donors every year. Aren’t we a greedy bunch? But the post donation biscuit and cuppa are important because sitting quietly while eating and drinking something helps the body to recover. If I’ve inspired you to become a donor go to www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23

Champion Of Sherwood Forest There is no need to be Robin Hood to be a Champion of Sherwood (or wear green tights) as Park Plaza Hotel Nottingham and Oaks Restaurant have discovered over the past three years supporting Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s corporate campaign. The teams from Park Plaza Nottingham and Oaks Restaurant came with props representing their working roles whilst on a visit to Foxcovert Nature Reserve.

woodland believed to be part of the ancient Sherwood Forest. High numbers of fungal species and survey work on moths and other invertebrates suggest that the plantation was established on the site of ancient woodland. Some records are of species only found locally in Sherwood Forest woodlands, underlining the site’s heritage as part of this world-famous forest.

They supported planting cricket bat willows last year; an investment as a cash crop in later years for Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust as they mature – even after recent vandalism of the trees which has caused interruption as a single crop.

Robert Watts, General Manager of Park Plaza Nottingham stated, “We welcome these opportunities to engage team members with our support for Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. It’s not just about the hard work that is achieved in the hotel and restaurants with our guests; it’s how we as an organisation involve ourselves in the local community too, encouraging responsible experiences. Our relationship with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust helps us to achieve this whilst having some fun.”

The team came out to visit Foxcovert Plantation Nature Reserve so that they could get first-hand experience of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s conservation work in action. The reserve, an 11 hectare site near Calverton, comprises deciduous

Holly McCain, Senior Development Officer at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust said, “It’s a real privilege to show our corporate supporters’ staff our nature reserves and to highlight how important their input is to protecting wildlife for the future. It’s fantastic to

It provides an opportunity to join a network of like-minded individuals and local companies which support

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust in protecting wildlife for the future, whilst making a tangible difference to business and to the local environment where customers and employees live. Top Tips For Sun Protection I have had a couple of holidays ruined after suffering from the effects of too much sun. To keep your holidays burn, blister and misery free, follow these ten top sun protection tips! Cover up! Simple as it may sound, clothing offers the best protection around. Avoid being in the sun between 11am and 3pm when its rays are the most damaging. Use sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15. Go for broad-spectrum sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Make sure your sunscreen is not past its expiry date. Most have a shelf life of 2-3 years. Apply sunscreen evenly, thickly and regularly. Reapply sunscreen after being in the water, or if you sweat a lot!

should not be used as an excuse for staying out longer. Wear a hat with a wide brim or peak to protect your face and head. Wear glasses to protect your eyes. Look for ones with a UV 400 label or that offer 100% block out of UVA and UVB rays. With these measures in place, you should enjoy happy, problem free sunshine and, on a more serious note, reduce the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Do not stay in the sun longer than you would if not wearing sunscreen. It

Downsize Your Dish …and your dress size! Smaller plates may be a key to weight loss. Several years ago, a food psychologist called Brian Wasink gathered a group of 85 food and nutrition experts. He gave each of them a small bowl or a large bowl and a small scoop or a large scoop. Then he asked them all to serve themselves a ‘portion’ of ice cream. Now these were people who knew about nutrition, yet they scooped 31% more than the average serving size into the large bowl and 15% more from the large scoop. Studies at the University of Pennsylvania conducted similar experiments hypothesising that giving student subjects a smaller scoop would mean they would take more than one, but most of the students took only one scoop regardless of size.

So, what can those of us who want to shed a few pounds take from this? Swap your 10 inch / 25cm dinner plate for an 8 inch / 20 cm one and put fattening foods like gravy or salad dressings into small bowls with small spoons. Put salad stuff and vegetables in a big bowl with a large serving spoon and then tuck in. Downsize with science! By Lucy Robson

Perfect for a hot summer day in the garden Ingredients 150ml / 5fl oz milk 2 tbsp peppermint syrup 400g / 14 oz peppermint ice cream Sprigs of fresh mint to garnish. Method Pour the milk and peppermint syrup into a food processor or blender and use a slow setting to combine them. Add the peppermint ice cream and blend until smooth. Pour the mixture into tall glasses and decorate with sprigs of fresh mint. It’s really that simple! It also works brilliantly with mint and choc chip ice cream. Grate chocolate curls over the top before serving.

Don’t forget the ice cubes, that chink of ice cubes on glass helps to make the drink feel more exotic.

Try adding mint liqueur in place of the peppermint syrup for a shake that packs a punch.

Garden Furniture Having the right garden furniture can really enhance the hours we spend in our gardens in the Summer. To help you decide what you need, consider how you will spend most of your time outdoors. Will it be daily alfresco dining with the family, weekend barbecues with family and friends, or just you relaxing in the sunshine with a good book? Knowing the function of your furniture can help you decide whether reclining padded beds, a sophisticated dining table and chairs, or relaxed informal seating is what you need. Of course it may be a mixture of all of the above, in which case you will need to look for versatile combinations. The amount of space you have available should also be taken into account. You might drool over a fantastic sofa with matching arm chairs in a catalogue, but do you really have the space to accommodate it successfully, or would smaller fold-away seats be more suitable? In addition to your outdoor space, think about where you will store your furniture in Winter. Whilst vinyl covers can protect your furniture from Summer showers, it really is best kept in a shed or garage during the worst weather. This is where fold-away pieces can be incredibly practical, or in some cases, you may be able to take pieces apart for storage too.

popular and versatile, but needs regular weatherproofing. Metal items require less maintenance, but have the disadvantage of being hot to touch in the sun. Some colours of plastic furniture also become hot, and plastic may become brittle if left outside in all weathers. Wicker and rattan pieces will need greater protection from the wet and are more easily damaged. Cost of course will also be a factor. Plastic items are usually the cheapest, but it is generally true that you get what you pay for in terms of longevity. Several materials offer a variety of colour choices. Remember though that white and silver reflect the light so can be uncomfortable to look at in the glaring sun, and black absorbs the heat so can become very hot. The safest colours are therefore midgreens, greys or natural wood. Many prefer muted tones, adding style and personality through bright cushions and tablecloths.

Whatever you choose, don’t go on appearance alone. The most stylish items won’t get used if they are incredibly uncomfortable. So do try out your intended purchases in-store to ensure they will help you to enjoy the outdoors, and not leave you fidgety or stiff.

When considering the material of your furniture, consider durability and maintenance as well as appearance. Wooden furniture is

Summer Motoring Tips

Have a look at your lights perhaps get someone else to make sure they’re working as you operate them - and make sure they’re clean and free from mud. Do you have everything you need? Do you have an up-to-date road map, or have you fully updated your satnav? Is your mobile phone fully charged, and do you have the number of your rescue and recovery company in its contact list? Take a bottle of screen wash with you. You will want to keep your screen as clean as possible.

We often think of winter as being the challenging time for drivers and passengers. In many ways, driving in summer can be just as demanding, especially when we’re facing long holiday journeys. Is your car ready? Make sure your car is serviced and you’ve checked it’s in good shape. Your holiday is often the biggest challenge to you car, and when it’s most likely to develop a problem. Check engine oil and coolant levels, along with brake, clutch and power steering fluid levels. Make sure your

tyre pressures are correct - have you allowed for hot weather and higher loading? Your car’s handbook will give you the figures. And don’t forget your spare tyre. Is it in good condition and at the correct pressure? Give your windscreen a good clean. It’ll soon get messy on most journeys. While you’re doing that, take a good look at your windscreen wipers (and don’t forget the rear wiper, if you have one). If they’re at all suspect, replace them.

You may also want to consider having a fire extinguisher in the car, just in case. And don’t overload your car be particularly careful with your roof rack. Heavy items can unbalance your car. Don’t forget you and your passengers either. Pack some cold drinks and snacks to keep everyone happy. On your journey If your car radio has an RDS function for local road reports, make sure you have it switched on. Guard against drowsiness by keeping your car well-ventilated. If you have allergy sufferers on-board, keep the windows closed and the air conditioning on.

Take care you’re not dazzled by bright sunshine. Wear sunglasses and use your car’s visors when the sun is low in the sky. In the event of a thunderstorm, slow down because braking distances can double with water on the road. Also, make sure you keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. If you have your family pets with you, never leave them in your vehicle, as heatstroke can prove fatal for dogs, and other animals can suffer badly. So take them with you, but make sure they don’t spend too long in full sun. They will be happier and healthier in the shade. And it’s always a good idea to take some bottled water with you. If you are stuck in traffic, both you and your pets will be grateful of a drink to keep you hydrated. If this seems a long list of things to do, they really won’t take a lot of time and effort. And they could be the difference between a safe, enjoyable summer and one that’s memorable for all the wrong reasons. by David Williams

A Knitting Revivial It’s been described as the new Yoga. Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Geri Halliwell all do it and chances are your granny is an expert at it. So what is the latest craze to hit the 21st century?

and unique brings wonderful feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment. Many people knit gifts for family, friends or charity and thus experience the irreplaceable pleasure of giving.

We are experiencing a knitting revival as women and men alike pick up long forgotten needles and yarn to create up-to-theminute fashion items such as jumpers, scarves, hats and baby clothes.

Many knitters are quite happy doing it alone, but increasingly knitting groups are springing up where patterns, tips and friendship are shared. This includes the internet with its growing community of knitting bloggers.

Gone are the dowdy knitwear patterns of yesteryear and in their place are the latest, trendy styles for you to knit and wear! Some accredit this revival to the recession – people are staying at home more and want something to do. Whatever the reason, sitting watching TV with needles clicking away eliminates any feelings of guilt you might otherwise experience!

So, why not dig out your granny’s needles and give knitting a try? By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Knitting is a fantastic way to relax and relieve stress. In addition, creating something personal

Blue Jean Tips

Jeans are one of the most versatile and adaptable items in a girl’s wardrobe, but how do you find your perfect match? Choosing a pair that is right for your body shape – and not necessarily the latest fashion – will establish balance and correct proportion that is key to achieving the most flattering look. Short legs need to look longer, fat tummies flatter and big bums smaller, whilst slim waists and shapely legs need to be shown off! Pay attention to the rise, cut, fit and wash of your jeans. For example, hipsters elongate the body and make a bigger bottom appear smaller whilst low risers broaden slim hips but may also produce the ‘muffin top’ effect. Decide what you want to hide or show and then choose a style accordingly! If you are big on top, slim fit or skinny legged jeans – even if you have lovely slim legs – will make you look top-heavy whilst attracting unwanted attention to hips and thighs for pear shapes. The solution in both cases may be to wear boot cuts – a flattering style for most women. The slight flare draws the eye from thicker waists and wider hips and helps achieve a balanced look. Don’t be tempted to wear jeans that are too small to ‘pull you in’. Clothing that is too tight generally makes you look fatter. Find a pair that fits you

correctly at your largest point and then make the necessary adjustments elsewhere. If a tubby tummy is a problem for you, avoid tucks, pleats and button-up flies to keep the front of the jeans as flat as possible. A higher waistline can also help to keep everything tucked neatly away! Dark colours create a slimming effect so avoid paler or lighter washed out shades around problem areas. If your legs are heavy at the top, jeans that fade below the knee will draw attention away from your thighs. If tall and slender is what you are after, wear jeans with a narrower cut and make sure they are long enough to almost cover your shoes. Capri cuts are definitely out for smaller women as they shorten the leg. Finally, pay attention to pockets, stitching and other embellishments. Pockets positioned wide apart will make your bottom look bigger, as will flaps and fancy stitching. Wherever there is detail, there will be attention, so only wear it if you want to flaunt it! Use the information here as a guide about what to avoid or look for, but don’t get too bogged down. There is no substitute for actually going to the shop and trying on! The key is to accentuate your assets and then wear your jeans with confidence! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Practical Fashion The days are getting longer and the weather finally seems to be over its ice age phase so it’s about time to get back outside again and enjoy nature. However, just because you’re trekking through muddy woods or just out for the day with the little ones, it doesn’t mean that you have to leave your fashion sense at home.

show off your assets. Jeans with a bit of stretch are also a good idea as they’ll give you a bit more breathing space for your tummy. High-waisted jeans give petite women the appearance of an extra few inches of height and skinny jeans show off tall women’s legs beautifully.

big companies offering schemes throughout the UK, such as Kings Camps (www.kingscamps.org) and Super Camps (www.supercamps. co.uk).

Find out what children need to bring with them – aprons, trainers or drinks, for example. They probably won’t need any money unless they are going out for a day trip.

Visit www.daycaretrust.org.uk/nafis to find details of your local Family Information Service. They will have details of childcare in your area, including holiday clubs.

Make sure you know the arrangements for dropping off and collecting children, and what happens in an emergency.

Most clubs will be registered with Ofsted and you can find details of their latest inspection at www.ofsted. gov.uk . It’s a good idea to visit the venue and speak to the manager. Make sure you are happy with the child/adult ratios and the qualifications of the staff – they should all have been CRB checked. Let a holiday club help with your childcare this summer The six-week school holiday looms. Up and down the country you can hear collective groans from working parents beginning to stress about securing holiday care for their children. Whether you need childcare while you’re at work, or a way to keep your energetic offspring entertained, holiday clubs can be a lifesaver.

There is such a wide variety available that you are sure to be able to find something that suits both you and your child. Some clubs are run by local authorities and are based at schools, nurseries or community centres. You’ll find that places offering ‘before and after school’ clubs often have holiday clubs too. Others are linked to clubs offering specific activities, such as a sport or performance art. There are also some

If you don’t know anyone else who has used the club, ask the manager to provide you with some recent testimonials. Try to see a timetable and photos of a typical day at the club. Activities can range from sports, crafts and cooking to quad biking, archery or trampolining. Many clubs will plan a theme for the day or week, and some may let the children choose what to do.

You will need to book your child’s place in advance. Check the session times carefully – some clubs may be half days, some will run within school hours, while others may be open from 8am until 5 or 6pm. Ask what is included in the price. Is lunch provided, or will children need to bring their own? Paying for a week is usually cheaper than paying per day. You may also get a discount for more than one child. Some clubs will accept childcare vouchers, and you can claim back some of the cost of Ofsted-registered clubs if you qualify for Family Tax Credits. Happy holidays! By Alex Brown

Choosing A BBQ You can’t beat the tantalising aroma and taste of freshly barbecued food, but how do you choose the best barbecue for you?

We all know crash diets are a bad idea, but impending holidays cry out for a quick fix. If you need to lose a few pounds before jetting off to foreign climes, we offer a few helpful hints and tips that will have you feeling fabulous by the pool!

When time is of the essence, a gas barbecue may be the best option. Fuelled by propane and lit by the touch of a button, they give instant heat - great for impromptu family meals after work. Some have multiple burners which can operate at varying temperatures to suit different foods, and the top models have flavouriser bars to give food that authentic charcoal flavour. If you like to relax over your cooking - maybe at the weekend when you have family and friends over - a charcoal barbecue is a great option. Using lump wood or briquettes for fuel, they take about 45 minutes to warm up and you can adjust the heat by raising or lowering the grills. Kettle barbecues also come with lids for roasting or braising food.

Dare to Bare

If portability is key, say for camping or picnicking, then consider a smaller, lightweight model that can fit in the back of the car. You can even buy disposable barbecues that can be bought at the supermarket and thrown away after use. A warming rack is useful to keep food up to temperature whilst other food is still cooking, and don’t forget a fork, tongs and spatula! Now let’s go BBQ!

Eat five or six small meals rather than three big ones. This will keep your blood sugar level steady and reduce cravings. Write down what you eat – this will stop sneaky snacking. Eat slowly and concentrate on enjoying your food. Watch your portion size – use smaller plates so you feel like you’re eating more.

Limit the amount of potatoes, pasta and bread you eat and bulk up meals with vegetables. Raw vegetables are ideal because your body burns extra calories as it digests them. Avoid processed foods which can be high in fat, sugar and salt, all of which encourage fluid retention. Chewing sugarfree gum takes your mind off wanting something to eat.

Investigate fatburning supplements. Staff at a good health food shop will be able to advise you. Be more active – aim to exercise for 30 minutes a day. And finally, get enough sleep – if you’re tired, you’re more likely to reach for a sugary snack.

Remember drinks have calories too – stick to water and use skimmed milk in tea and coffee. Green tea is rumoured to help your body burn fat.
