Health and Wellbeing Beat Computer Stress By Randy Barber
I
f you spend a large amount of your work time on a computer, chances are you are doing yourself some harm. Maybe you haven’t got any obvious physical symptoms like a sore back, tense neck and shoulders or numbness and tingling in your hands but, at the very least, the time you spend at the computer most days is likely to be adding considerably to your stress levels. And studies are showing that this extra work-related stress can be surprisingly harmful in the long term. The good news is that there are a number of easy steps you can take to counteract these problems. I have compiled these into four tips which should help anyone who uses a computer frequently or for long periods. The first of these follows. Tip 1 – Take a break If there were just one piece of advice I could offer to reduce the harmful effects of excessive computer work, it would be “take frequent breaks.” That’s all, just get up from your desk every hour or so and do something else for a while. Simple. The reason taking breaks is important is that it is really very hard on the human body to sit in one position for any length of time. Sitting itself is stressful. Add to that holding your arms out in front of you to type or use a mouse and possibly also craning your head forward to peer to at a computer screen and you have got a dangerous cocktail of postures which put a lot of strain on muscles and joints which just were not designed for the job.
stress. They adapt and they cause other structures of the body to adapt as well so that you can just carry on doing what you are doing until damage is done. Only days, weeks or maybe even months later will you experience pain and loss of function. Frequent breaks are the best way to break this cycle. If you tend to get absorbed in what you’re doing – very easy to do with computers - then it might help to set up some kind of alarm to remind you it’s time to stop for a while. One of those cheap digital timers cooks use to keep track of their preparations is ideal but set it up somewhere where you have to get up to turn it off. This will ensure you do actually stop. If your breaks are frequent they don’t need to be very long. Five or ten minutes every hour or so is fine. Time to prepare a hot drink maybe, catch up with a colleague or make a necessary phone call. Even better, you could use the break to do a few stretches. More about stretching next month. Randy Barber is a massage and Bowen therapist based in West Bridgford. Unfortunately, the muscles and joints you use to operate a computer do not usually send out clear and immediate signals that they are under

Health and Wellbeing A Diet for Life!
What we eat can affect how we feel “One man’s meat is another man’s poison” just about sums up this article, after all healthy eating is eating only the foods that you can digest and assimilate. Let it be as natural and nutritious as possible but let it be right for you or might make you ill. People who come to me for advice are often eating healthily yet still feel unwell. They may spend money on supplements and special diet books, and then only feel slightly better. Many are amazed at their improvement once problem foods are avoided. Unfortunately some of the foods we think of as healthy and nutritious are the main culprits. These include wholegrain cereals, eggs, cow’s milk, soya, nuts & seeds, yogurt and certain fruits & vegetables. They cause allergies and other health problems to those lacking certain digestive enzymes or who are intolerant to them. This may be an inflamed digestive system or chronic physical and even mental problems, such as hyperactivity. Many children become better behaved and able to concentrate at school once milk and/or wheat have been removed from their diet and replaced with appropriate alternatives.
health. Our bodies will struggle to cope and over time illness will set in due to inflammation, immune reactions and high histamine levels. Inflammation can occur in all parts of the body: the skin, lungs, sinuses, joints, arteries or nerves, not just in the digestive system. Sometimes, sadly, it can begin at a young age, with eczema, asthma, hay fever and other allergies, or later, when it’s equally sadly put down to ageing, with fluid retention, arthritis, high blood pressure, weight gain, persistent fatigue, poor memory etc. If you’d like to be healthier or think you may be suffering from allergies or chronic illnesses you could try an elimination diet. Avoid suspect foods for a short period and then reintroduce them one at a time to judge their effect. However, because these are complex issues, it’s always best to do this under supervision. Seek advice from a naturopath. It may mean giving up a much loved foods for a while but will be worth it if it leads to good health and longevity.
Some people have problems digesting different sugars, such as fructose - found in fruit, or lactose - found in milk, or complex sugars - found in whole grains. The cabbage family can be the cause of IBS, while citrus fruits, migraines and stone fruits can be responsible for joint pain. This partly explains why some people appear healthy even though they eat white bread and hardly any fruit and vegetables. However, refined cereals, too much sugar, too many artificial additives and a lack of raw foods will eventually take its toll on our

Lifestyle & Leisure How Eggstraordinary! Although the Easter weekend is the principal religious feast of the Christian year, most of its traditions have no basis in Christianity at all. In fact, the Jewish festival of Passover is closely linked to Easter by dates and symbolism. Passover, also known as Pesach, was celebrated long before the birth of Jesus. Before Easter was used as a name for this holiday, early Christians celebrated ‘Pascha’, a word derived from Pesach. The word ‘Easter’ comes from an Anglo-Saxon fertility goddess called Eostre, who was associated with spring and new beginnings. Both Easter and Passover centre around re-birth, and bond neatly with the AngloSaxon festival of ‘Eostre-monath’ – Eostre’s month. Hot cross buns, traditionally eaten on Good Friday, are linked to Passover. Originally they were unleavened bread, an important Passover food. Nowadays, they are more palatably leavened and marked with a cross to serve as a reminder of the crucifixion. But where does the tradition of eating chocolate eggs come from? In the times of Eostre, eggs were given as gifts to celebrate the end of winter and as a symbol of new life. And need I mention the fertility characteristic of an egg? A traditional dish at a Passover meal is Beitzah, a hardboiled egg to represent life. All this evolved into Christians decorating the shells with colourful patterns, and then moved onto our familiar, delicious chocolate Easter eggs.
10
Well, that’s the eggs worked out. But an Easter Bunny? A rabbit that lays eggs! Not to mention the need for these eggs to be hunted for and rolled down a hill. Well, the origin of the rabbit isn’t too hard to decipher. We go back to the goddess Eostre again. Her sacred animal was the hare. Rabbits are similar to hares and rather more common. Therefore the two creatures became interchangeable. And of course rabbits are well-known for their prolificacy… so I’m afraid we’re back to fertility symbolism again. The Easter Bunny and egg hunts seem to have started in Germany in the 16th century. Children made nests in the garden and, if they were good, the Easter Bunny would leave them coloured hard-boiled eggs to find the next morning. This tradition travelled to America with early German settlers and, like many old traditions, has now returned to Britain substituting chocolate eggs and a more interesting egg hunt. Egg rolling on Easter Monday is a strange old custom, that is said to represent the rolling away of the stone blocking Jesus’ tomb. Also known as Pace-Egging, derived from the word Pesach, it has been fun for centuries, but nobody is sure why. Perhaps it originated as a way of getting everyone out of the house for some muchneeded exercise after a long weekend of feasting? Suki North

uite some time ago now, a colleague had cause to quote to me “If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got”. That certainly jolted me into action, and I reviewed the situation and changed my ways! Over the years in my work as a therapist, and through the experience of my own therapy too, I have learned that the many different therapeutic approaches provide a variety of very clear and easy ways to understand “the old guard” - our repeating patterns of behaviour that once served us well, but suddenly seem no longer appropriate. For me, reviewing my own situation meant that I resigned from my management work because that is what I had “always” done (well, it felt like that to me anyway!) and started my own business. And now life is very different! But whatever patterns of relating and behaviour we have, it often seems the case that we are unwilling to change until or unless a crisis forces us to review the situation. Robert de Board, author of “Counselling
14
for Toads” based on the characters from Wind in the Willows describes Mr Toad’s situation..........”First they nursed him. Then they encouraged him. Then they told him to pull himself together.....Finally Badger could stand it no longer. ‘Now look here Toad, this can go on no longer,’ he said sternly. There is only one thing left. You must have some counselling!’” Therapy, whether that’s counselling, psychotherapy, coaching, hypnotherapy etc does not have to wait until we are in a crisis though – think of it as an MOT – taking care of your mental and emotional health in order to help you experience life in all its fullness. Understanding more of what we are about and how we cope with life events will mean that future changes and challenges will not simply be crisis points in our lives, but become stepping stones into our future. Developing your emotional health could allow you, like me (and Mr Toad) to find a whole new adventure in life just round the corner............... Margaret Jacobson MBACP

Ask the Expert
The Facts behind Fat Dr Dinesh Maini at Zenith Cosmetic Clinics explains the facts behind the Fat! What Is Fat? You might well ask what it is all about as you struggle to fasten those jeans that fit you last year or those man boobs that have bothered you since teenage years are now forcing you to keep your shirt on! What we are discussing as we all know is called adipose tissue the medical term for fat. The base unit of this collection is the humble fat cell or adipocyte. It holds the fat in a semiliquid state, there is a big droplet in each one and they are typically 0.1mm in size. Millions of them bunch together and are held in place by fibrous strands. Why do we have it? As everyone knows fat accumulates due to excess calorie intake. Our bodies do not like waste and efficiently store away any spare energy from our food (or drink) as fat. Obviously a very useful adaptive phenomenon and helpful for survival in the days before Mars bars and fresh cream cakes. Nowadays just a pain for most of us!
16
How do you get rid of it? So you have spent a year in the gym and cut down your intake but you still have the fat. What do you do? It depends where it is and how much you have. Only one therapy works - calorie restriction. There are 2 ways of doing this. Either reduce calories across the board but predominantly from fat OR reduce carbohydrate intake to very low levels. Alizonne is a medically formulated & Dr led therapy with a high rate of success in producing rapid and sustained life changing weight loss & you too can lose 5 Stone in 10 weeks. The difference with Alizonne is that the system is carefully managed & unlike most other weight loss programmes you are highly unlikely to regain your weight. Alizonne provides perfect nutritional balance as well as weekly additional fat reduction & skin tightening treatments where the vast majority of patients get no loose skin. There is no muscle loss and most people feel very well from day 1.

Virus Warnings
ver the last couple of weeks, I have been inundated with people having viruses on their computers. The virus in particular is getting past all the main anvivirus programs, McAffee, Sophos, AVG, Avast, Nod32, Nortons to name but a few. The first signs of the virus are that you receive a large pop up box when you are on the internet warning you that you have viruses. The titles on the pop up box recently have been “System Tools” and “Anti-Virus Anti-Spyware 2011” At the bottom of the box are two buttons, one asking you to click to download a new anti-virus program to get rid of it, or one to continue unprotected. If you click on either button, you will be infected with the virus. The best way to get rid it is to either open task manager and kill the application or as a last resort, press the power switch of your computer and hold for 10 seconds or
18
longer until it shuts down. Doing this may lose any data that you currently have open and can – worst case – cause the computer not to come up again. If you get infected with this virus, it will start to shut down your access to various programs, e.g. control panel, task manager, internet, anti-virus programs. A box will also pop up on your screen every 30 seconds and a voice will also come across the speakers telling you that you are infected. If you do become infected, you may be able to remove the virus manually, or worst case, you will need to rebuild your computer from recovery disks – but remember to save your data first. If in doubt, call your IT support people or give me a call. If you have any questions, call Bryan on (01949-8760-98) or email questions@ midlanddatanetworks.co.uk

Bee Nice!
lbert Einstein supposedly declared that, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left.” There is much debate over whether the great man actually did make such an assertion as he was a physicist after all, not an entomologist, but whether he did or not, it’s a scary thought. There’s no doubt about it, honey bees and bumble bees are of enormous agricultural importance. It is estimated that more than a third of the world’s crop production relies on these bees. Without them we’re in trouble and they are in decline. Pesticides, loss of habitat and disease are all thought to be playing a part. Bees are fascinating and beautiful creatures and as gardeners we can play our part in their continued survival. It’s simple: bees need flowers for sustenance, flowers need bees for survival and gardeners need flowers to garden! First it’s important to think ahead and provide flowers for bees throughout their lifecycle, which runs from March to September. Here are some suggestions. Spring – Bluebells, bugle, flowering cherry, forget-me-not (Myosotis), hellebore and rosemary are all good spring plants. Summer – Aquilegia, sweet peas, fennel, foxgloves, potentilla, roses, stachys, teasel, thyme and verbascum
22
Late summer / early autumn – Aster, buddleia, dahlia, eryngium, fuchsia, heather, lavender and sedum. Second, unfortunately not all flowers are created equal. Frilly double flowers, for example, are too elaborate. They have so many petals that the bees struggle to get to the nectar and pollen. This is the reason that single dahlias attract lots of bees, whilst double varieties are generally ignored. Single flowered rose varieties are also good, such as the rambler Seagull, with its flat open white blooms, large yellow stamens and heady scent. Any similar rambler grown over a fence or wall will do. Some, like the pale pink Little Rambler, will even repeat flower. Ramblers are terrific roses. They are vigorous, disease resistant and great for covering bare fences, unsightly sheds and walls. Best of all they need next to no pruning! The main thing is to keep it simple: a few flowers for each part of the bee life cycle and no overly fancy varieties. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t grow double flowered dahlias if that’s what floats your boat, it’s just that Mr Bee would appreciate a few single flowered varieties thrown into the mix. Let’s make this the year we all be nice to bees: our future may depend on it!

YOPEY
contest that reveals, recognizes and rewards Nottinghamshire young unsung heroes and is endorsed by both the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader is open for entries. Nottinghamshire Police & Fire Young People of the Year has £2,000 in prize money to reward young people, aged 10-25, who are good citizens. This is the fifth ‘YOPEY’ – as the contest is nicknamed – in Nottinghamshire, and the first to be sponsored by the county’s police and fire services. Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Julia Hodson said: “Nottinghamshire Police is proud to sponsor this fifth YOPEY event and ensure that inspirational young people from across the county receive acknowledgement for their outstanding achievements.” Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue’s Chief Fire Officer Frank Swann said: “YOPEY highlights the good work young people do in their communities and for their families and we are pleased to assist in making sure they receive the recognition they deserve.” The police and fire chiefs are not the only top people to speak out in favour of YOPEY for recognizing young ‘positive role models’ who ‘give to others’. The Notts contest also has the backing of the PM, Deputy PM, Chancellor and Labour leader. A Bilsthorpe boy won the 2009 Notts YOPEY – for running a youth club in his village – and met Chancellor George Osborne. The kind of things the young people could be doing include:
• raising money for charity or other good causes; • showing a spirit in adversity that is an example to others; • supporting or mentoring someone through a difficult time; • volunteering for projects at home or abroad; • working with disabled, ill or elderly people; • and acting heroically. “The list is actually endless,” says YOPEY founder Tony Gearing. “The only requirement is that the entry is aged 10-25, lives, works or studies in Notts, and ‘gives to others’ in one way or another.” He gave examples: “If you’re a school, we want to hear about pupils who help run an event or support a friend through a difficult time. If you’re a junior football club, we’re looking for the youngster who helps run the club – not necessarily the top goal scorer but the person who does things behind the scenes.” The Notts Police & Fire Young Person of the Year will win £1000. Second place will win £500, third £250 and there will be a Junior Nottinghamshire Young Person of the Year winning £250. • Do you know any inspirational young person or group of young people who deserve to be recognised? Logon to www. yopey.org or send an SAE for an entry form to YOPEY, PO Box 236, Newmarket CB8 1DP. Young people can nominate themselves and entries close on May 31. The awards ceremony will be held at the fire & rescue service HQ in Arnold in July.
• caring for family who maybe ill, disabled of have other problems; • helping run a youth club or other organization; • looking after abandoned or neglected animals; • making communities safer through initiative or behaviour;

Firstly Lion President John Whitlam handed over a cheque of £ 500.00 to Sarah Gillies of the BLUEBELL WOOD CHILDREN’S HOSPICE, also £300.00 to Trish Butts of the CROMPTON ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL of Bilsthorpe. Sarah at Bluebell Wood gave a presentation to the Lions and spoken passionately on behalf of the hospice, what c a m e across very clearly that although they are dealing daily with tradegy of children with shortened life expectancy the hospice was filled with love and laughter. So if you would maybe like to come as a guest to one of our bi monthly meetings and see how we work the please contact JON YARWOOD on 07581 265531 or E MAIL jon.c.yarwood@gmal.com he will tell you more, it may be the best call you make!
Dukeries U3A, Ollerton Fancy a change this Spring? Why not join the Dukeries U3A and become involved in a new hobby or interest and make new friends? This year we have trips organized to Saltaire, Newcastle, Brodsworth Hall, Aysgarth falls, Oxford and Whightwick Manor. A weekend away at Highclere Castle and Wiseby Gardens is also available – and all trips are very reasonably priced. Nearer to home, we are launching a Book Club and a Sunday Luncheon Club. There are so many activities on offer, from Architecture to Bridge, from Bellringing to History and Walking... Please come to our General Meeting on the third Monday of the month at the Jubilee Hall, Wellow Road, Ollerton, or ring 01623 824789 for more details.
