Happy May to you all. I saw a tongue in cheek report the other day supposedly from the met office saying that we were experiencing the “wettest drought on record!” I only know that any hose pipe ban won’t be a problem for me, I think my hosepipe is at the bottom of the garden somewhere in 2 feet of water. We have a new classified section this month where you can advertise all your unwanted stuff for free. So dust off that unused exercise bike and email me the details. Let’s see if we can turn it into cash. Spotlight magazine is delivered to 6,500 homes and businesses in the North Mansfield / Edwinstowe / Ollerton area each month.

Abbey Drives are Caring for the Environment
Abbey Drives are caring for the environment
Local company, Abbey Drives, are making it their mission to reduce their carbon footprint. Their strategy includes, training all their drivers in responsible driving techniques, recycling as much of their waste product as possible and buying greener products. Stefan Shipley, owner of Abbey Drives, says, “By far the biggest benefit we have gained is by using a product called Pulverised Fly Ash (PFA). This is a waste product from power stations which would normally go into landfill. Portland Cement manufacture is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in the construction industry. By using PFA we reduce the need for landfill and reduce the amount of Portland cement used in our concrete by 30-60%” Recycling is another green issue that Abbey Drives have embraced. They now recycle concrete taken from existing drives so that it can be crushed and reused. The soil is screened and re-used as topsoil, and even old cast iron manhole covers are recycled. But the company doesn’t stop there and uses recycled green products wherever they can. Says Stefan, “We now use drainage channels made from of the benefits. recycled plastic. All our manholes are now Over its 17 years trading, family-based sourced from recycled materials. Even the business, Abbey Drives has established plastic we cover the roads with to keep the itself as one of the leading installers of site clean and tidy is recycled plastic” pattern imprinted concrete to the domestic and commercial markets. Lifestyle & Leisure To Sow or Buy
I
n addition to the traditional method of sowing seeds, garden centres, DIY stores and even supermarkets are now providing more options for people looking to grow their own vegetables from young plants, but I’m not sure how I feel about this. In one respect I’m excited about the movement, and think that it’s a great step forward; mainly because it introduces vegetable growing to a wider audience and it takes away the scary ‘unknown science’ of germination. Now you and I know that with most veg, seed sowing does not have to be any more scientific than making a line in the soil with a stick and throwing in a few seeds. Cover them over, slosh on some water and hey presto, as if by magic they germinate (it’s no surprise really as that’s what they were designed to do!). Planting young vegetable plants is also very easy. There’s no thinning out of the seedlings if you over sow, it’s much less time consuming (the whole veg plot could, in theory, be planted up in one go) and it’s great for children (and impatient adults) who like an ‘instant impact’.
It also removes the need to spend ages choosing from the bewildering array of varieties on offer, as normally there’s just one type available (although seasoned gardeners will see this as a major disadvantage!). There are other downsides too, and I think the main one has to be the fact that you don’t get the thrill and satisfaction of that special day when you go outside and observe the seedlings poking through the soil. Having checked daily since the week after you sowed them (as I do!), you get a real sense of achievement when the fresh new leaves emerge from the crusty seed coat. The other major downside is cost, and some young plants do actually work out more expensive than buying the end product from the supermarket, but I guess there’s not much fun in that. Either way, I don’t think it really matters. Whether you’re a time starved parent or have several hours to spare sowing neat rows, there’s nothing quite like eating home grown peas, popping them fresh from the pod. Until next time, happy gardening!

Lifestyle & Leisure Take Better Photos Frame your subject properly Don’t cut off half their head, or if the whole person is in the frame, don’t chop off their feet! Train yourself to check for distractions, like a tree that seems to grow out of someone’s head, or an ugly litter bin nearby. Focus Take time to focus on your subject before you take the picture. If you are photographing a person, focus on their eyes.
Be steady The secret to a crisp, sharp photo is steady hands. Hold the camera firmly and squeeze the shutter button gently, don’t jerk, pull away or move for a second or two after you’ve pressed the button. Use Natural Light if possible If you have the option to take a picture outdoors do it. If you are indoors, pick big windows, bright rooms or rooms with good lighting for your shots. Time of day The best times for a great photo are usually at early mornings (dawn) or twilight (dusk) as the light then is warm and golden. Another good time to snap a picture is after a rain shower, the colours and contrast on wet damp objects can be very striking. Tom Hancock

nother interesting month! ‘Confessions of a Carpet man’. Terry Simpson, one of our newer Rotarians started his own Carpet retail business in the 1970’s when a Datsun car cost about £1,900 and petrol was 9p a litre. Carpet was supplied in different width strips that had to be hand sewn to make a carpet large enough to fit a room. Terry gave members and guests an amazing insight into the skills required to create beautiful and intricate carpet designs. Terry is seen in the photo with a selection of handmade wooden pens. These are the product of another skill performed as a hobby. Rotarian Terry Simpson Our annual Spring Prize Draw took place at Perlethorpe Village Hall on the 1st April 2012. Many of the organisations that sold tickets, The Thursday Club, Ollerton Jubilee Hall, Pet Shop Girls, Dukeries Community Workshop, Ollerton & Boughton Scouts & Guides were there to see tickets their members had sold win prizes. The Ollerton Division Guide Association sold the jackpot ticket to Rachel who won £150. Our Spring Prize Draw helped over 13 different organisations to share a proportion of almost £2,000, dependent upon the numbers of tickets they sold, Rotarian John Hand, Janice & David Leatherland watching tickets being drawn Our club donated £100 to the Ollerton Division of the Girl Guides and the money is to be spent on helping local girls achieve the Queens Award for Guiding. Jenny Hind of Ollerton Guides is going on an expedition to Switzerland later this year where she will be tested and if successful will gain the Queens Award which is the

highest award that a guider can obtain. We wish her every success and are pleased to be able to help young people to gain such a fantastic experience and education. Linda Broom of Edwinstowe who is the leader of the Ollerton Division Girlguiding said they have around 181 girl members ranging from Rainbows through to senior section; we also have 63 Volunteer Leaders and around 8 Trefoil guild members. The areas in which we run our meetings include: Forest Town, Clipstone, Edwinstowe, Warsop, Ollerton and Walesby. We have 6 Rainbow Units 7 Brownie Units and 5 Guide units. We work towards personal challenge badges throughout all units and have lots of exciting fun making crafts and baking. Lots of units take part in sleepovers and pack holidays often venturing up into Derbyshire and of late to the Lincolnshire Coast. We are always on the lookout for new members both Children and Adult volunteers. Please Contact Linda Broom 01623 824782 if you are interested in joining our very exciting Group. The Lions Club THE YOUTH OF TODAY EH ! You know what, I have a nice little story, we at the EDWINSTOWE AND DUKERIES LIONS CLUB recently ran our EASTER EGG raffle and we are very pleased to announce that we raised over £700.00. This was brilliant, particularly in light of the current economic situation and it helped us buy flight tickets for a very poorly young man and his family from Bilsthorpe to EURO DISNEY. We were supported again by the local community in particular by our good friends at THE SOUTH FOREST LEISURE COMPLEX. Now here’s the story, only a couple of weeks before Easter we had a spare egg, and we asked the DOG AND DUCK AT CLIPSTONE if they could sell a few tickets for us, WELL they came up with the goods , and what really touched us is that the young STAFF bought in quantity themselves and one young guy actually saved up all his tips and donated into the pot. the youth of today eh !
This ISN’T going to that hard, so there will be something for everyone, a few stinkers may be thrown in, because we don’t want twenty teams all tied for first place. The point is about us raising money and having FUN, this is what we LIONS are all about, watch this space for news of our next events, particularly our extremely popular RACE NIGHT. If you wish to be involved in the LIONS why not come to a meeting and find out more, all are welcome please call JON YARWOOD on 07581 265531 or e mail jon.c.yarwood@gmail.com OH ! by the way, also contact Jon for your entry to the Quiz night so book early........ your first question could be who’s famous saying was that ?
YOU CAN START EATING MORE FISH NOW ! The Edwinstowe and Dukeries Lions Club have set a date for their second ANNUAL QUIZ NIGHT its Friday the 15th of June 2012. it is to be held at THE SOUTH FOREST LEISURE COMPLEX Edwinstowe, start time 7 30 pm. News from your MP
W
Mark Spencer MP
hen relationships break down things can get complicated and unpleasant and often never more so than when children are involved. More than 3 million children live in separated families, but only around 50% of them benefit from an effective maintenance arrangement. While some couples are able to make arrangements between them, it can be a struggle for others and the child maintenance system was supposed to assist. The reality is however that the current child maintenance system is failing children and parents. I’ve been dealing recently with various constituents who have been struggling with the Child Support Agency (CSA) and one of the consistent themes is that dads trying to do the right thing and who want to contribute are being pursued with a totally misplaced aggression while fathers who are evading contributions are slipping through the net. A cynic would say that the soft targets are the ones being chased. I raised this matter in the House, pointing out to the Minister for Department, Work and Pensions that historically, the CSA has chased these soft targets rather than pinning down non paying dads. It seems to me that what we need is for those parents who are capable of coming to their own arrangements to be free to make those decisions independently, while those parents for whom an agreement is impossible need support from Government to come to an arrangement. I’m pleased to see that Maria Miller, the Minister responsible, agrees and the Government have announced a series of proposals to move this forward. Our research also shows that 51% of parents with care (mostly mothers) could make family-based arrangements with the right help and support and around 75% of fathers using the CSA would be likely to make their own arrangements with the right support. The current system also costs 40p for every £1 recovered. It is expensive and it isn’t working. We need to change that.
22
What the Government is proposing is that parents who want to come to a mutual agreement will have access to a free information portal and experts to help them formalise that arrangement while those parents who decide that they cannot or do not want to come to their own arrangement at no cost, they will have access to a heavily subsidised statutory scheme. We will make sure that victims of domestic violence are protected and will not charge them for applying to the statutory scheme. The new system is about encouraging maturity and responsibility when possible but supporting and guiding when it is not. For those parents who persistently refuse to participate and pay their fair share, if we need to take enforcement against a parent who persistently refuses to pay then we will charge them for that. This will encourage parents to pay when they should as failure to do so will involve much higher costs to them. I think these changes are a positive and I think they place the right emphasis on responsibility and support. The vast majority of parents are desperate to do the right thing for their children and these changes acknowledge that. If however a relationship has broken down terminally without prospect of communication, no child will be left to bear the brunt and this Government will do everything possible to protect them.
I was delighted to host the School Council from Dukeries College in Ollerton and to show them around the House of Commons. The students had asked to visit Parliament as well as some of London’s other sites and were delighted to bump into Russell Brand, fresh from a committee appearance, on their way round! The delegates were bright and engaged and unafraid to give me a grilling including some of their thoughts on House of Lords reform!

Community Information Dukeries U3A, Ollerton
The Dukeries Singers
2012 is the twentieth anniversary year of the Dukeries U3A. Originating in France, the U3A aims to provide education, companionship and social opportunities for the retired and semi-retired. It’s a chance to expand your horizons once work is over, the family has flown and there are fewer day to day responsibilities to contend with. It’s time for yourself! Time to have fun!
We had a really busy April, but had a gap around Easter, so we could enjoy the break (and the Chocolate.) No time for slacking though as we have an equally busy time ahead.
The U3A here in Ollerton has many opportunities on offer to enhance this interesting stage of your life. There is a General Meeting every month which involves a guest speaker, Club news, refreshments, and time to meet new people or chat to established friends. Included in the U3A there are many interest groups to join. All good value and appealing to all physical capabilities, interests and skills. There is an Art Appreciation group; one for Architecture, Bridge, Stitch Craft, Card craft, Gardening and Walking. You can join the Book Club or both the Luncheon groups. We actually visit local restaurants for a day out on Sundays once a month. Hand Bell Ringing, Ten Pin Bowling, theatre visits, day trips and Woodwork are also on offer. There is far too much happening to mention here in detail, so why not pay us a visit on any third Monday of the month at the Jubilee Hall, Wellow Road, Ollerton? It’s £1 for visitors – or £17 a year once you decide to join. Come on – give it a go! Those lonely, boring days at home could soon be over!

At the Cricket field. Hope you are having a lovely Spring. As I am writing this we are enjoying some wonderfully unseasonably warm sunshine and enjoying all the outdoor activities it allows. And yes I include gardening as a joy!! I know we need some rain, but perhaps, like Camelot, just at night. Let us hope for good weather for the Queen’s Jubilee and we look forward to entertaining you at one of our events
