Happy May to you all. I saw a tongue in cheek report the other day supposedly from the met office saying that we were experiencing the “wettest drought on record!” I only know that any hose pipe ban won’t be a problem for me, I think my hosepipe is at the bottom of the garden somewhere in 2 feet of water. We have a new classified section this month where you can advertise all your unwanted stuff for free. So dust off that unused exercise bike and email me the details. Let’s see if we can turn it into cash. Spotlight magazine is delivered to 6,200 homes and businesses in the West Bridgford area each month. Lifestyle & Leisure To Sow or Buy

I

n addition to the traditional method of sowing seeds, garden centres, DIY stores and even supermarkets are now providing more options for people looking to grow their own vegetables from young plants, but I’m not sure how I feel about this. In one respect I’m excited about the movement, and think that it’s a great step forward; mainly because it introduces vegetable growing to a wider audience and it takes away the scary ‘unknown science’ of germination. Now you and I know that with most veg, seed sowing does not have to be any more scientific than making a line in the soil with a stick and throwing in a few seeds. Cover them over, slosh on some water and hey presto, as if by magic they germinate (it’s no surprise really as that’s what they were designed to do!). Planting young vegetable plants is also very easy. There’s no thinning out of the seedlings if you over sow, it’s much less time consuming (the whole veg plot could, in theory, be planted up in one go) and it’s great for children (and impatient adults) who like an ‘instant impact’.

It also removes the need to spend ages choosing from the bewildering array of varieties on offer, as normally there’s just one type available (although seasoned gardeners will see this as a major disadvantage!). There are other downsides too, and I think the main one has to be the fact that you don’t get the thrill and satisfaction of that special day when you go outside and observe the seedlings poking through the soil. Having checked daily since the week after you sowed them (as I do!), you get a real sense of achievement when the fresh new leaves emerge from the crusty seed coat. The other major downside is cost, and some young plants do actually work out more expensive than buying the end product from the supermarket, but I guess there’s not much fun in that. Either way, I don’t think it really matters. Whether you’re a time starved parent or have several hours to spare sowing neat rows, there’s nothing quite like eating home grown peas, popping them fresh from the pod. Until next time, happy gardening!

Other jobs to be getting on with this month Keep on top of weeding – hoeing on a warm dry day is the best method Make regular sowing of vegetables such as beetroot, lettuce, carrots and peas Build a cane wigwam and sow runner beans at the base, 2 beans per 8 foot cane Harden off tender perennials such as Fuchsias, Geraniums and Busy Lizzies Divide Primulas after flowering

Lady Bay Arts Festival

n Saturday 19th May, as part of their First Birthday celebrations, the Poppy Folk Club will be taking part in the Lady Bay Arts Festival by presenting a ‘Human Juke Box’. Local singers and musicians from the club will be performing throughout the afternoon in the garden of 42 Seymour Rd. ‘Its a bit of fun’ said Phil Preen, one of the club organisers, ‘and we are very grateful to Rod Bailey of Seymour Rd Studios for the design, construction and decoration of the juke box’. There will also be a chance to hear folk music in a more conventional setting on Sunday when the club hosts its first ‘Folk Day’ featuring two afternoon concerts with acts from the East Midlands and an evening concert with the uniquely entertaining duo ‘Belshazzar’s Feast’. Marc Block, pictured, a powerful singer songwriter from Nottingham, will be performing in the Juke Box on Saturday and also in Sunday’s Late Afternoon Concert. For more information about either event telephone Julie & Phil 0115 981 2861, Dave 07790 943 893 or email phil@ poppyfolkclub.co.uk.

In Praise of Sausages

nyone for Bangers and Mash? Nearly every part of the world has sausages of some type. The humble banger has been around for thousands of years and one of the first documented mentions of sausages was in Homer’s The Odyssey, around the 8th century BC. The word sausage is derived from the Latin for salt and they were originally made as a way of preserving lesser cuts of meat with herbs and spices. At first they were encased in animal intestine, but there are a variety of skins used now, including vegetarian and synthetic. You’re no longer limited to meat sausages either; vegetarian, seafood and cheese are all common fillings for sausages these days. Sausages are extremely versatile. They can be served at breakfast, lunch, dinner or as a snack. You can have them with chips, mashed potatoes, in toad-in-thehole, on the barbecue, in pasta, wrapped in bacon at Christmas, hot or cold. And that’s just the standard variety! It is estimated the UK has around 400 varieties of sausage (compared to Germany with around 1200) from haggis to black pudding to the standard pork sausage. You can probably find around 10 different varieties on your supermarket shelves, and that’s not including international varieties.

and apple sausages are a favourite in the West Country, and what better to wash it down than a glass of scrumpy? The regional differences are down to the meat and blends of herbs and spices used, and you’re most likely to find them at specialist butchers in the relevant areas. The term ‘banger’ has been around since at least 1919, but became popular after World War II, when it is said that scarcity of meat led to added water in the sausage, which expanded against the tight skin on heating, and caused the sausage to explode with a loud bang! Sausages are experiencing a bit of a revival at the moment, with more exotic fillings and better quality meat. Smoked or continental type sausages such as chorizo, salami and pepperoni are becoming common ingredients in British cooking. Germany alone has 1200 varieties of sausage, you’re bound to find something you like! Premium sausages will have no less than 70% meat, and the other ingredients will be of the highest quality. No longer is a sausage destined just for mash and onion gravy though that’s still my favourite way of scoffing them!

Even in the UK, you can get saveloys, chipolatas, hot dogs and so on. You have probably heard of the Cumberland and Lincolnshire sausages. But have you heard of the Manchester sausage (containing cloves, ginger, nutmeg, mace and white pepper)? Or the Oxford one (sage, a touch of marjoram, lemon pork and veal)? There’s even a Marylebone one (mace, sage and ginger)! Pork

End of an Era

icrosoft have given 2 warnings this month on its legacy operating systems. Windows XP & Office 2003, which have been out now for almost 10 years, are currently in payable support only, which will run out in 2 years time. They are not doing any more development on this product. They have also announced that Mainstream support for Windows Vista has ended mid April. This means that they will not be providing any further development on the product and advise people to start to migrate towards Windows 7 or Windows 8 as it arrives. Windows XP currently remains the most widely used operating system with around 43% of the market share, whilst Windows 7 has around 35%. Microsoft commit to mainstream support for 5 years after the operating system has been released or 2 years after its successor. When Microsoft announce that they are stopping support for a product, other companies look at their support for the operating system – for example, the anti-virus companies look to stop writing their products for the old systems.

Lifestyle & Leisure Take a Break

They say a change is as good as a rest, and in order to return from a couple of days away feeling revitalised and rejuvenated, it is not necessary to have spent the whole weekend with your feet up doing nothing. On the contrary, a brisk walk or two in the fresh air, a round of golf or a couple of lengths in the hotel pool, will give your lungs a work-out and improve your breathing, and you’ll also benefit from any extra exposure to sunlight. A break from the normal daily routine prevents our mind and body from stagnating. Seeing and doing the same thing every day reduces the mind’s efficiency, so we need new stimulants to ensure we’re operating at our peak.

Get away from it all this weekend We all look forward to the weekend when we can take a break from the stresses and strains of the working week, but how often are our hopes and expectations of a funfilled few days dashed when we get caught up in household chores and responsibilities? Though catching up on home maintenance is necessary from time to time, we must not overlook the importance of proper rest and relaxation. Experts say that getting away - even for a short period - does wonders for both body and mind, and that regular holidays are a necessity, not a luxury. These days there are a myriad of opportunities to escape for a few days - from an exciting city break to a relaxing retreat in the country: from a soothing spa stay to a frantic foreign escapade, there is something to suit everyone!

18

Travel gives us the chance to visit new places, meet new people and encounter new experiences, which all serve to make us much more interesting people, with more to talk about and share, and we’ll return to work with our body and mind refreshed and raring to go! A few days’ break is not only a great stress buster, but is also a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with your loved one, without the intrusion of day to day responsibility. You’ll have more time to talk, appreciate one another and enjoy the simple pleasures in life – together. So, if your Saturdays are more gloomy than glorious and your Sundays are long and laborious, maybe it’s time you took yourself away for a few days to transform your weekend from something mundane and monotonous, to an occasion that you look forward to with enthusiasm and relish. Make your weekend memorable by taking a short break!

Lifestyle & Leisure Take Better Photos Frame your subject properly Don’t cut off half their head, or if the whole person is in the frame, don’t chop off their feet! Train yourself to check for distractions, like a tree that seems to grow out of someone’s head, or an ugly litter bin nearby. Focus Take time to focus on your subject before you take the picture. If you are photographing a person, focus on their eyes.

Be steady The secret to a crisp, sharp photo is steady hands. Hold the camera firmly and squeeze the shutter button gently, don’t jerk, pull away or move for a second or two after you’ve pressed the button. Use Natural Light if possible If you have the option to take a picture outdoors do it. If you are indoors, pick big windows, bright rooms or rooms with good lighting for your shots. Time of day The best times for a great photo are usually at early mornings (dawn) or twilight (dusk) as the light then is warm and golden. Another good time to snap a picture is after a rain shower, the colours and contrast on wet damp objects can be very striking. Tom Hancock

Lifestyle & Leisure Lamb Keema A light and healthy supper with a taste of India

For the salad

Prep time: 15 min Cooking time: 30 min Serves 4-6

Ÿ cucumber, chopped finely 3 tomatoes, deseeded and chopped finely ½ red onion, finely chopped 2-3 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped

Ingredients

Method

For the Keema

Dry fry handfuls of minced lamb for about 4-5 minutes until browned. Drain off any fat. Add the ground spices and fry for another minute.

350g / 12oz lean minced lamb 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 large onion, chopped 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped 115g / 4oz fine green beans, chopped into 2cm pieces 175g / 6oz mushrooms, sliced 400g / 14oz can of chickpeas, drained 400g / 14oz can chopped tomatoes 90ml lamb stock (a stock cube works fine) 2 level tbsp garlic pickle (optional) Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2-3tbsp fresh coriander, chopped

Add the chopped onion, red pepper and green beans. Stir-fry for a few moments then add the mushrooms, chickpeas, tomatoes, stock and garlic pickle, if using. Bring to the boil, then cover and cook gently for about 25 minutes, stirring from time to time. Remove the lid for the final ten minutes of cooking to reduce the liquid. The keema should not be allowed to boil dry though. Prepare the salad by mixing together the cucumber, tomatoes, onion and fresh coriander. Season with salt and pepper then chill until ready to serve. Check the seasoning of the keema and add salt and pepper to taste. Stir through the fresh, chopped coriander. Serve with the salad, chapattis or rice and plain yoghurt.

Fancy a new Hobby?

hilst on holiday have you ever watched windsurfers zipping about on the water and thought that looks like fun? Well it is, and when the wind blows it’s a big adrenalin rush and great exercise. So what stopped you having a go? • Didn’t know there was anywhere locally? • Didn’t know where to learn? • Thought you had to have your own kit? • Thought it would be too expensive? Trent Windsurfing Club is just about to launch it’s new season and, for the first time, we are inviting members of the public to come and have a go. Our planned taster sessions will be 3 hours long, long enough for you to be taught the basics and to try it out on the water under the watchful eye of our qualified instructor. We’ll provide all the equipment, just bring

a cozzy, some old trainers and a towel. Visit www.trentwindsurfingclub.co.uk for more info to get in touch and to get your name down for a taster session. If you enjoy it and want to take it further the club has a very economical equipment lease scheme to get you started. Beware though, if you get the bug, it will be addictive. And when you get it, Trent Windsurfing Club has a range of exciting trips and activities, junior kit for you to teach the family, regular training sessions for advice and guidance, and a great welcome.

Saving for Long Term Care

know I’ve often mentioned in this column that we’re all living longer, and therefore the need to make sure that your savings and pension will enable you to enjoy your long retirement to the full. However, very few of us will have given any consideration to what would happen should we be unable to look after ourselves in later life. Nursing homes and round-the-clock care can be very expensive and, with the current pressure on local authority spending, it is no longer sensible to rely on social service provision to cover the cost.

Believe it or not, it is illegal to deliberately deprive yourself of an asset to avoid paying care fees and so a simple transfer of ownership to a son or daughter will not suffice. However, before you get too worried, the good thing is that there are things you can do now to help you save should you need to access long-term care. If you or a relative is concerned about meeting the costs of long term care then contact me to discuss the options available and I can help you plan for this eventuality.

First the bad news; currently, if your assets are above £14,250 you may have to make a contribution towards care costs but if your assets are above £23,250 you will be assessed as being able to pay for the cost of your own care.

Special insurance policies are available, you could look at generating additional income from capital or equity release schemes. The best news of all is, that if you don’t need to go into long-term care you have still saved money to enjoy your retirement or gift to your family.

If you are deemed able to afford care, at worst you may have to sell your home, and plans to leave an inheritance for your loved ones may have to be abandoned.

For more information on this, or any other aspect or your financial planning please contact me, Justin Stockdale, of Sense Financial Solutions on 0115 837 8620 or email justin@itmakessense.net.

Money Sense Take Cover

If you have a mortgage, you are required to take out buildings insurance, but everyone needs to protect their possessions. Not all contents cover is the same - your belongings may be covered for fire, flood or theft but not against accidental damage, and not all policies offer new for old cover, meaning that the amount paid out for an item may not meet the cost to replace it, so please read the small print!

T

How much insurance do you really need?

here are literally hundreds of insurances available on the market - from mundane but very practical flood protection to more bizarre insurance against alien abduction. But although you can cover yourself for practically anything, it would be impossible and often inappropriate to do so. The key is to look at your personal circumstances and decide where you need insurance the most. One of the most important types of insurance is life cover, which pays out a lump sum on death. It falls into one of two types – term insurance which pays out on death during a fixed term and then ends unless a new policy is taken out – and whole life insurance which covers you for as long as you continue to pay the required premiums. You might also want to protect your loved ones while you’re still alive. Critical illness cover and disability insurance pay out a lump sum should you suffer a life threatening illness or have an accident that leaves you permanently disabled or no longer able to work.

34

It is a crime to drive a vehicle that is not insured. Third party insurance pays out if you injure someone or damage someone else’s property whilst driving, whilst fully comprehensive insurance also covers the cost of repairs to your own vehicle. Other motor insurance includes breakdown cover which will pay for repairs to and recovery of your vehicle, depending on the level of cover you choose. Animal lovers could avoid big vet bills by taking out pet insurance for their furry friends, and if you enjoy time away, then holiday insurance is a must to compensate you if you have to unexpectedly cancel your holiday, are taken ill while away, lose your possessions or if you injure another person or damage their possessions. You can take out insurance to protect against unemployment, accident, sickness and redundancy which could help to pay your mortgage or replace part of your income if you can’t work for a time. Other policies include health insurance, longterm care insurance and mobile phone insurance - the list is almost endless. So, take a look at your personal circumstances, evaluate where you are most at risk, decide how much you can afford and then insure yourself appropriately!

Abbey Drives are Caring for the Environment

Abbey Drives are caring for the environment

Local company, Abbey Drives, are making it their mission to reduce their carbon footprint. Their strategy includes, training all their drivers in responsible driving techniques, recycling as much of their waste product as possible and buying greener products. Stefan Shipley, owner of Abbey Drives, says, “By far the biggest benefit we have gained is by using a product called Pulverised Fly Ash (PFA). This is a waste product from power stations which would normally go into landfill. Portland Cement manufacture is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in the construction industry. By using PFA we reduce the need for landfill and reduce the amount of Portland cement used in our concrete by 30-60%” Recycling is another green issue that Abbey Drives have embraced. They now recycle concrete taken from existing drives so that it can be crushed and reused. The soil is screened and re-used as topsoil, and even old cast iron manhole covers are recycled. But the company doesn’t stop there and uses recycled green products wherever they can. Says Stefan, “We now use drainage channels made from of the benefits. recycled plastic.
